Belly Up to the Bar With Bendy and Her Friendies!!! Button Pics & New Thread Started!

Today Jay and I ventured out into the world to spend some money. I found us a $25 gift certificate on restaurants . com yesterday for only $5 at a place called Wapango in one of the malls that we like to visit. I suspected that Jay would like this place more than me since their menu is supposed to feature a fusion of Mexican, Cuban, Central and South American cuisines but I was willing to take one for the team especially if it meant that I could buy something at Coach afterwards. ;)

I don't have any pictures of the meal but I have to say that we were very pleasantly suprised at how just how good everything was. Rather than killing me and my tummy with an overload of heat and spices, they focused on flavor and presentation and I really liked everything that we tried - I would go back again in a heartbeat and would recommend this place to anyone.

So what did we have?

We started with an appetizer selection ... The Carnivale: a combination platter large enough to share with an empanada de queso, a Colombian arepa, a chicken quesadilla, red corn chicken taquitos, and tortilla crisps with pineapple salsa and black beans.

The cheesy empanada was stuffed to the brim with gooey goodness ... I think that was my favorite of everything but it was all very good. They also brought out hot, fresh rolls with dipping sauces and more black bean goo. I ate the bread without anything on it and it was divine ... hot, yeasty, and soft with just a hint of garlic butter.

That appetizer platter was huge, by the way, and for most people other than your intrepid Bendy and her darling Jay it would have been enough food. That probably explains our server's look of amazement when we each ordered an entree, too.

Jay ordered Tacos de la Calle: a choice of fresh roasted chicken, grilled steak, shredded pork carnitas or pan-seared tilapia on a warm flour tortilla, served with a variety of sauces and toppings on the side and with golden rice and black beans. Guests have the option of ordering two tacos for $12 and each additional taco is $4 or you can order all four for $17.

You wanna guess how many Jay ordered? ;)

Yep, he went with all four and ate them all. I only tried the steak one, but I must say that the meat was very flavorful and tender, seasoned and cooked really well. The hubby's final verdict was eight thumbs up!

I ordered the Empanadas de Pollo, Queso, y Puerco: three handmade turnovers, one stuffed with roasted chicken, one with three cheeses and one with pork carnitas, served with Mexican crema, golden rice and sweet maduros.

Excellent! I ate the entire cheese empanada on my own and split the pig popover with Jay. I brought the chickie turnover home with the rest of my rice, those weird, fried plantains, and two delectable rolls. Jay's lunch for tomorrow is set.

As for beverages, I started with a Pisco Sour that was the most gawd-awful version of the drink I've ever had. I expect some sourness with this drink but this one was so bad that I still haven't completely unpuckered.

A little while later after forcing most of it down I confessed to the bartender that it just wasn't very good and she admitted that she hadn't used much sugar when mixing my drink. She also said that their version of Pisco (South American brandy, I think) wasn't very good. She told me to try something new so I requested the Pamarita which is Pama pomegranate liqueur, sauza hornitos tequila, hiram walker triple sec and sweet and sour. This was much better - the perfect blend of sweet and sour with a wee little slice of lime for garnish.

Jason stuck with beer and enjoyed a Dos Equis Amber, which was quite tasty.

All in all a wonderful late lunch / early dinner and we look forward to trying Wapango again. Next time I promise to have my camera because this meal would have made for great food porn - the appetizer presentation was especially eye-catching. :goodvibes

Oh, Bendy, that sounds like quite a feast!! And with a discount coupon, what a deal. :cool1:

DH has a short notice trip to Vegas in the next few weeks. I'm tagging along. :thumbsup2 We made reservations for Fiamma and Nobhill at the MGM Grand. They both are offering spring tasting menus at a very nice price. Should be fun!!:goodvibes

Thought I'd post the link to the menus. Happy reading!

Nobhill is on our short list for the next time we visit Vegas - be sure to come back and tell us what you think!

We also want to try The Mansion (Joel Robuchon) after having such a lovely dinner at Le Atelier last year.

Have a great trip! :goodvibes

After eating all that food we decided that a stroll around the mall was just what the doctor ordered to aid in the digestive process. I would have loved to stop in at Ann Taylor and buy some new clothes but I haven't lost near enough weight to warrant new clothes even if my pants are beginning to fall apart. :lmao:

Cue Homer Simpson: "Don't you hate pants?" :rotfl2:

We ended up at Coach because as Jay said, with a 25% coupon from the manufacturer, I'd be stupid not to buy something.

I'm really pretty picky when it comes to purses and I don't like much of what Coach puts out these days ... pastel purses don't do it for me and I refuse to pay leather prices for fabric purses just because they're from Coach. I will pay those prices for their leather because that stuff stands the test of time - I've got a purse and planner that I bought before Jay and I were even engaged and they're both in great condition. Anyway ... I wandered the store and was just about ready to take my postcard and go home when I spotted some really cute small purses ... I hit upon one that I thought would be a great little addition to my evening arsenal and that might serve good duty on vacation, too.

It's fabric and the original price was $98 before tax ... with my discount I ended up paying $78 and some change when all the sales tax was added in. Not too shabby! And I would have bought something for Jay's mom, who does like Coach and adores anything in purple, but the only thing they had was a small, two-tone lavender leather clutch. It was really cute but Jay's mom is a rather large lady - tall with a big frame - and she doesn't like small bags ... she needs luggage, ya know what I mean? And neither of us were willing to spend that kind of money because big purses at Coach cost big money and we'd rather spend big money on a big meal that makes us each fat with food. :rotfl2:

I like that the strap is adjustable ... so I can loop it and wear it around my wrist, hook it on both ends of the purse for a more traditional shoulder strap, or ditch it altogether and use it as a clutch. And I love that each compartment is lined in chartreuse satin ... it's so unexpected and whimsical!

I think this will end up being a very versatile and useful accessory and I can't wait to use it!

After buying me a present at Coach we wandered over to Williams-Sonoma and picked up some random things, including a lavender soap / hand lotion gift set for Jay's mom. We also found ourselves a bottle of that Bourbon Aged Maple Syrup that we've been coveting. Here's how WS describes it:

Pure maple syrup is a treat in itself, but barrel aging transforms this organic premium-grade maple syrup into something truly extraordinary. The kettle-cooked syrup is aged for weeks in 12- to 18-year-old casks originally used to make bourbon. The result is richly aromatic, with notes of butterscotch, vanilla, charred oak and bourbon (but without the alcohol). The syrup is sheer bliss on pancakes, but don’t stop there: Drizzle it over poached or baked fruit; use it as a glaze for roasted meats, poultry and fish; or stir it into yogurt.

We're making waffles for breakfast tomorrow morning (I think) and can't wait to crack open this stuff and see if it lives up to its pricetag. :cloud9:

It's Blisssssssss

WS was also selling a really cool coffee table cookbook from Thomas Keller ... it's gorgeous and filled with lovely pictures and drool worthy recipes and they wanted $50 for it. After buying the purse I didn't feel like I could buy the book, too; so it waits for another day. We have to buy a new blender soon anyway and are planning on using any funds that Jay may receive for his birthday (May 10th ... it will be here before we know it) to buy one at WS that we've been eyeballing since Christmas. Maybe I can nab the cookbook then if it's still available.

And now it's time to think about all the food we have to get ready for our "Q" tomorrow. Most of what we're making is pretty simple but the birthday cake that Jay wants is something that I try not to make very often because it is the most cussedly annoying thing ever and leaves me alternately weeping, swearing, yelling, and stomping.

It's a chocolate mocha torte with a toffee crunch layer in-between each layer of cake and frosting and just typing about it is making my blood pressure rise. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I'll post a recipe tomorrow if anyone is interested. It's very good to eat it's just creamed crap to make!

We're also having burgers, hot dogs, beer brats with red onions, spinach salad, random fresh veggies, Jay's famous spinach dip, boursin and fresh bread, fresh fruit with grand mariner cream sauce, and that accused torte.

Sangria and many different beers along with some lovely dessert wines will also be available. We decided it was still too cold for kahlua coladas ... those are best when the weather is Stinktown hot (and stinky).

Hope you're all having a lovely and flu-free weekend! :grouphug:

You realize I'm gonna want to borrow that bag... ;)

It's cute, isn't it? I don't mind fabric in the wristlets since they're usually more reasonable, but you should have seen some of the prices on the "normal" sized fabric purses ... easily as much, if not more, than some of the leather bags.

Tell Planky you need a new purse ... the lining of this one looks like it would match him perfectly. :rotfl2:

Bliss maple syrup, huh? That sounds totally irresistible to me.

Planky is very upset because his year end bonus has been recalled after all of the death threats over the hedge fund he started on the ship last year...

He's trying to afford one of those reusable shopping bags from Price Chopper... ;)

Tried the syrup this morning with waffles ... it's pretty damn good. A little thinner than I would have expected but it's got a nice flavor with some hints of bourbon. Probably won't buy a second bottle though because it was pretty pricey ($28), but it was fun to try it once.

Have I ever shared my Sangria recipe with you fine people? Well, I say it's mine but it's just the one I use ... Emeril created the recipe. It's the best Sangria I've ever had or made ... I'll post a picture later but here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (I use beaujolais)
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 grand marnier
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons orange juice
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 orange (sliced)
1/2 lemon (sliced)
1/2 lime (sliced)
1 green apple sliced
1 bottle sparkling water (I use gerolsteiner)

Directions:

Combine everything but the sparkling water in a pretty pitcher ... mix and refrigerate. Add the sparkly water just before serving.

YUM!!!

Brenda, love the little Coach bag; hate the physical ailments for you! :flower3: We were going to have waffles for supper last night, but we thought the syrup tasted a little "off" (how can that happen? I guess just tasted like the plastic bottle), so we ditched it and just had grilled cheese. Your bourbon syrup sounds very yummy.

(sigh) Now, we're on our way to MIL's for Sunday dinner. Dh is wearing his "Flaming a$$ Hot Sauce" t-shirt with a donkey on it. I know he just does this to bug them! :rotfl:

Very nice! A cute little Coach bag just completes an already good day. Of course my mind immediately thought...excellent bag for Disney. I raided our Coach outlet last weekend. The women in there are like a pack of hungry wolves...it gets ugly. :scared:

I found the site they will be updating as time goes on.

Under event schedule, Party for the Senses I found this:
