Beagle owners - ***Photo added***

I've had beagles all my life my grandfather bred them back in East Texas and I guess that breed is just in my blood! I currently have Daisy, she is the fifth beagle I have had and so sweet! She's the tiniest, skinniest beagle, I have had, they do love to eat and are often a bit pudgy! They can be stubborn and they do love a good scent but they are so sweet and almost always wonderful family dogs. As for shedding, I don't find them to be that bad, but then I had a dalmation and maybe that's my comparison!

My husband and I love beagles, we always say we'll never be without one. To me, they are the breed that looks like a puppy their whole life.

I have never had one that climbed a fence but my sister's beagle (he is actually my Daisy's brother) has been very ept at being an escape artist! I fact, he has been nicknamed Houdine in his neighborhood since he can get out of anything! Everyone in my sister's subdivision knows Sam and knows its fine to stop and put him the car and take him home! Daisy did sneak out of our front door once when I had it open to sign for a delivery but thankfuly that's been it.

So I give my highest recommendation to the beagle! Liberty Belle, congratulations on your newest family member, welcome to the club of Beagle Owners/Lovers!

I'm looking forward to seeing a photo of your new addition!

We have Jessie, the beagle in my signature. She was picked up as a stray about three years ago, and we adopted her from the Humane Society. We think she was about 5 when got her.

She's a VERY laid-back dog. Not a howler or barker at all, but she does "talk" to us a lot with little grunts and squeaks and lots of eye contact. She'll bark just a tiny bark to get our attention when she wants to go out or when we forget to put her dinner out on time. We know she can howl, but we have to work pretty hard to get her to do it. If we have a gang in the house singing "Happy Birthday", she's happy to howl along!

She's also not high energy. She does get very excited about going for walks- you don't DARE say the word unless you're going to follow through! She turns into a hyper little ball of fur when she sees you grab the leash, but one walk around the block and she's satisfied. Her main interest is rearranging the sofa pillows to her liking for her naps.

She has the happiest little trot. I like watching her walk around the house- she has a bouncy little happy prance, and holds that tail up high and swishy. The Beagle walk is described as "merry", and it really is!

She's not much of a lap dog and doesn't like to be picked up. She is great with kids- she'll happily let all the neighborhood kids pet her and doesn't jump on them or scare even the littlest ones.

She's about 29 pounds. She'd be heavier if we allowed her to be- the girl does not know when to stop eating, and runs to the kitchen to watch for droppage anytime she hears the fridge open.

We need to see photos of the little one!

Right now we have one incredibly wonderful beagle, Maya. She is almost a year and a half. We actually got from her craigslist. She is full blooded and does have some hunting stock in her. We have to watch open doors and gates like hawks as she will bolt the moment your attention is distracted. She is the sweetest dog in the whole world. My father raised beagles and hunt with them. I was raised with dachshunds, however. If I had only realized how incredible beagles were, we wouldn't have waited so long to get one. The sweetest thing Maya does is when she's tired. She gets one of her "babies" (stuffed animals) and chews/sucks on it. She'll fall asleep with it in her mouth. It's so sweet. In just four weeks, beagle #2 (Princess Rosalinda Jonas or Rosie Jo) will be joining our family. We can't wait!

Aww, he's sleeping right now. You guys, he is the cutest little thing ever! I'll try to post pictures tomorrow. I've been having some trouble with the card reader on my computer, but hopefully I can get it to work.

Brent has earned the nickname "sharkdog." When we're eating dinner, he circles the table, tail up, looking/hoping for anything to drop on the floor and pounces if it does. You have no hope of getting it before he does, he's a quick little bugger.

congrats OP on getting the puppy. You'll love him. They really are happy little guys.

I can't wait to see his photo!!! I hope he had a good first night.

We lost our almost 16-year-old Beagle, Beags, July 15th. He was one of the best dogs I have ever had the privilege to love. :cloud9:

He's sleeping right now, so I have time for a little Beagle Blog. :)

We drove out to get him last night. He was born in the country and was kept outside with his mom, dad, and sisters. When we got there a woman was waiting for us and took us over to where the puppies were. When they heard us, he and his sisters came running, ears flopping and tails wagging. I swear it was the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I nudge my son (he's six and this is his puppy) forward so he'd be the first to have contact. We found the boy right away, but the woman picked him up and said, "This is the male. He's spoken for. You can choose between the other ones." Scared me to death! I said, "Oh, we can't have the male now? I'm the one you talked to and you said you were saving the male for us." She thought we were someone else coming out to get a female. Whew! She kept apologizing, but we had our little guy and so all was cool!

It was my son's job to name him since he is his dog and he chose Hunter. Not my first choice, but his first choice had been Wolverine and I think I like Hunter a bit more! My oldest tried to talk him into naming he either Moseby or Shorty George, but Finn insisted on Hunter.

He was fine in the car. He wimpered a little bit and then lay down on the seat between my sons and fell asleep. We then noticed he had fleas all over him. :guilty: Poor little guy.

When we got home, our lab was happy to see him. His nose was in the air (we were carrying Hunter) and his tail was wagging. We took Hunter right up to the bathtub and gave him a bath. I quickly got on the internet and found out Dawn dish soap killed fleas and was safe for puppies, so that's what we washed him in. I think most of the fleas are gone, but he's going to have a second bath tonight to make sure. I'm calling the vet tomorrow and making an appointment to get his shots and maybe he'll give him some Frontline type stuff, too.

Hunter didn't mind his bath too much. He cried at first because the water was too cool, but when we warmed it up, he was fine. After his bath we wrapped him up in a warm fuzzy towel and he snuggled in. He soon got his energy back and was jumping like a little rabbit around our living room. Our lab seemed a little nervous around him and sniffed him a lot. Hunter kept trying to nip at his back legs and Shiloh didn't want any of that. He was a good sport, though, and just moved out of the way when he did it. He even just kind of sat at watched when Hunter gnawed on his bone. Shiloh's a good boy.

We all love him. My son will run down the hallway to his room (so much for the "no running in the house" rule) and Hunter just bounds after him. So, so cute. I ran out and got him a little stuffed beaver toy and he loves it. He carries it around in his mouth.

We've taken pictures and hopefully I'll be able to get them uploaded this evening so you all can see him. :lovestruc Thank you for all your advice and memories.

Congratulations on Hunter! He sounds absolutely adorable and I can't wait to see a picture of him.

They are really very good dogs and I think you made a wonderful choice! I'm sure he thinks to too :goodvibes

Just a word of warning though on food...beagles can be allergic to wheat so you might have to buy food that doesn't contain it or he'll be itching and biting himself a lot. Just keep an eye out for it...hopefully he will be lucky and not be allergic!

We have had really good luck with Natural Balance Duck & Potato. It's high rated and a good quality food that won't make him miserable if he is sensative.

Like WebmasterKathy...Sierra is pretty much the same as hers overall (but she IS a lapdog...LOVES the laps!). With her walks, say the word or touch the leash and she will NOT leave you alone until she has had her walkie.

Good luck!! He will be the new love of your life! :lovestruc

oh be careful with the ears. Our vet told us that because of the way the ears lay over the canal they are prone to "fungus." They sell drops to keep it controlled and we have to buy a small bottle of stuff from the vet in case it sneaks up on us. You'll know it if it happens, they get a funky smell in the ears and are constantly digging on them.

Enjoy Hunter. Bound to be a ton of fun.

I still haven't been able to get any pictures from the camera on to the computer, but my husband took this one with his phone and emailed it to me, so I've got it to show. It's pretty fuzzy, but you get the general idea.

Our lab is really playing with him now. It's so cute. Hunter will take after our lab and jump at him, but as soon as Shiloh starts playing back, Hunter just freezes.

Oh he is precious!!! In my opinion, there's nothing sweeter than a beagle pup. And just wait till he finds his voice! Your life will never be the same! I have a beagle/doxie mix and I wouldn't know what to do without the sound of her "baaroooooooooooo!" every time she runs outside to chase a bird!

I think the picture looks good. Hunter is a cutie and I think it's a great name for him.

Ohhhh!! He's adorable!!! Congrats on your new family member!! He's going to make your son very, very happy for many years to come!

I have a beagle-mix on my lap right now and I just adore him. He's so affectionate and cuddly and just makes me happy. He was a rescue from the shelter and I think we both feel like we won the lottery the day we decided to adopt each other. :cloud9:

We have a beagel in the house behind us and sometimes I just want to strangle it! I am sure it is a nice family dog but all the thing does is howl. They leave it outside with their other mutt and it howls the whole time. So very annoying when you want to sit outside and relax.

Oh my goodness...HE IS PRECIOUS!!! I don't need a puppy....I don't need a puppy...I don't need a puppy! :rotfl:

Here's to a long, happy, and healthy life for your sweet Hunter. :lovestruc
