Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

We didn't cancel soley on reading these boards.Our next door neigbours (who also travelled with us in Jan to Mexico) were at WDW and just returned 2 weeks ago...they didn't get sick but did see kids getting sick in bushes and another couple were sick on the return bus ride back to MCO, and after seeing what my family went through on our trip in Mexico I just didn't think I would relax and enjoy the trip.We are able to get up and go anytime we like as far as travel is concerned so we may look at going back in Nov/Dec.

I have to agree with the previous poster - I can't believe this post is still alive either!!! Anyone can catch this virus at anytime, anyplace. We just returned from our trip (2/5-2/10 at the Polynesian) and nobody got sick. Yes, we took the precautions everyone has been talking about (Clorox wipes, washing hands thoroughly, etc) but I really wouldn't cancel my trip because of this. I hate to say it, but whether it's now, this spring, summer, or next fall - there will always be a chance of contracting the virus either in Disney, school, the supermarket - it's out there and believe me, I'd pretty much take any illness over that, but you can't focus on it to this degree. Enjoy your life and hope for the best!

We've actually decided to cancel our trip due to this illness going around...hopefully the 4 plus 3 will be there for us for Dec. As I stated in a previous post 2 out of the 6 of us travelling to Mexico this past Jan had this virus and was very sick and I would just worry while there so hopefully things will calm down.

I have to say, I still think about this once in a while and can't help but think about the refillable mugs being a culprit in helping to spread germs...
When we were at Pop, we observed that the refillable drink stations were all so busy all the time. Most people just rinsed out their cups in the rinse sink and refilled. Think about this that they are held and touched all over the place and then not washed (sanitized) (not by all anyway) and then you put your mug there after to refill...
makes sense to me anyway...

I brought dish soap from home and washed our mugs out thrououghly each night. I was glad I did. Made me feel better anyway!

Didn't this thing start at the Yacht Club? I don't think there is a huge use of refillable mugs there.

We were at WDW January 9-15 and stayed healthy. We did try to wash our hands as frequently as possible, but we do that no matter where we go. I think maybe this intestinal virus is not going around quite as much now that we are well past the Christmas/New Year holiday season.

I have to agree with the other posters about this thread still being so active. But I do understand the need for concern. I've read this thread from beginning to end and posted somewhere in the middle. From what I've read this virus has supposedly been around since August of 2008. During this time, Aug, 2008-Present, my family and I have been over at WDW 4 times and have not experienced this illness and only once saw a child throw up at the hotel lobby. Since we are from Miami, we drove each time. But once at the resorts, we did use Disney Transportation (Buses, Monorails, Ferries, etc.).

Here's where we've stayed:

October: Spilt Stay- Boardwalk Villas and Fort Wilderness Cabins
November: Coronado Springs
December-January (NYE/NYD): Contemporary (Garden Wing & Tower)- This is where I saw the little girl throw up on our first day.
February- Yacht Club

My family consists of myself (26), DH (27), DD (18 months), MGF (67, diabetic/cancer survivor), MGM (62). We took the normal precautions (i.e. proper hand sanitizing, etc), but nothing over the edge.

For those planning on traveling any time soon over to the Orlando area, enjoy your stay and the weather. You only live once!!! Just be wise and not like the many I saw that left the restrooms without washing their hands. YUCK!!!!

For what it's worth I was at AKL from 2/6 to 2/11 and didn't get sick. I didn't see anyone at the resort or any of the parks who was ill.

oh man, this thread is crazy! We are traveling in May and I hope we dont catch anything .. I think we will be taking some immunity boosters the week prior (and throughout our trip) as well as sanitizing hands, tables, etc ...

My family isn't going to Disney until mid September. To the poster who talked about people not washing their hands as they leave the restroom, well I usually don't. Due to the fact that I will get more germs off the door knobs and faucets. I use purell which I take out of my purse. If you pay close attention I usually don't touch door knobs or faucets in bathrooms out in public. If I do wash my hands, the paper towel is tucked under my arm while I am washing, I then dry my hands, use the paper towel to cover the faucet and then continue to use it to cover the door handle, i then with the door ajar toss the used towel into the nearest wastebasket. This being said, I clean houses for a living, and I can tell you right now that I haven't gotten sick once from a customers home. I instead get sick from my co-workers who feel it necessary top come to the office sick, we then drive around to cleanings in each others cars, and being in such tight quarters, spread the germs. I got sick the week before this past Christmas, thanks to a co-worker. It hit my family on Christmas eve. So the same illness has been going around for what 3 months so far. I would think it has probably ran it's copurse by now. Good luck to all. I really didn't mean to rant so long.

You are probably one of the few that actually uses purell in this situation. This past trip I saw them walk out and re-join their party and eat what they had waiting for them.

I'm not suggesting that refillable mugs/stations are the root of it all, just perhaps a contributing factor to be aware about and to maybe wash mugs out with soap just like hand washing would be important...
fwiw, I did see a several sick and just take precautions as most usually would!

I agree with you, most restrooms are automated now and if they are not there are methods as you stated to cover your self. I wash my hands after using the restroom it states on the pruell to use on clean hands

We were at POP from Feb.5-9. We did not get sick. The only sickness I saw was that someone had thrown up in the bathroom floor at the Premium Outlets. My DD was at ASSP with her team. She did not get sick either.

I must say that after reading through many pages of this thread prior to our late-January trip I was paranoid about getting sick. We packed anti-bacterial cleaners in our bags and washed our hands constantly. We ate at many restaurants all over WDW, in all parks and in several hotels, including buffets.

We NEVER got sick nor did we see or hear about any proof of any sickness running rampant around WDW.

Go to Disney World and have a fantastice time like we did!!

Before you call me on my above post, it's great if YOU use Purell. But I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of people who don't wash don't use Purell either. They just leave the restroom and spread the GI germs on their hands to the rest of us who do wash. Sorry if that offends, but it is how this germ spreads. No two ways about it.

Eh, possibly... but much more probably, you got it on the plane, or even before you left home. According to the CDC (the folks who would know) http://www.cdc.gov/Ncidod/dvrd/revb/gastro/norovirus-factsheet.htm - see the Clinical Presentations section - the normal incubation period is between 24 and 48 hours. Your first person fell ill about thirty hours after you got to the resort, thirty one hours after you got on the DME bus. Numbers four, five, and six seem to have caught it from one, two, or three, and your relapse seems to be, well, a relapse.

We feel like we picked it up on resort only because we werent the only family at Mara and the Marketplace buying sprite and saltines AND the CM's at the registars were talking about it with people in front of us in line and with us when they rang up our purchases. All became ill within 48 hours of being on resort and ALL were staying at AKL. I came prepared with anti bac gel, clorox wipes and anti bac wet ones to wipe little ones down with before eating even after we each washed in restrooms before dining, after potty breaks, etc. We did see vomit in several places, DH smelled it in the restrooms a couple times and the womens restrooms at will call MK and by space MTN. and by Pinnochio Haus had an odor that wasnt from being cleaned. We ended up using the baby care centers many times for our potty needs because of this. Those were immaculate!
Im not saying anything against AKL, just that we were one of a dozen families we ran into who had or were ill.

Just got back from a Valentine's Day long weekend.

1. Jeez, it was CROWDED!!!

2. Nobody in our family caught a stomach virus

3. We washed our hands a lot and used hand sanitizer. I put us on the "1 squirt every hour" schedule, maybe y'all think that's crazy but I had no intention of any of us seeing the inside of Florida Hospital's emerg. room again.

4. Didn't see anyone throwing up. People behind us in line were talking about someone who "got sick and then everyone else got it", but didn't ask if it was the tummy variety.

5. DD10 came down with a garden variety sore throat/sneeze on Sun, one day after we got there, no biggie, probably brought it from school. We figure the hand washing/sanitizing helped not only us but everyone around us from catching that cold.

6. Weather was awesome, had a great trip, looking forward to the next one.

We jus got home on Monday. I agree Valentines was super crowded!! But I enjoyed my Valentines dinner with Pooh

We were there all week and no one got sick. Got up on Sunday morning starting to feel yucky.. and now I have a full blown sore throat. Stuffed up head and little voice. Oh well, atleast it waited til the end of the trip

I think that cold is everywhere. I just got over it. I live in Canada and didn't have that pleasure of going on a trip.
