Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

I never really made the connection before, but usually I will feel sort of flu like a few days after we fly. I never heard of this before the boards here-maybe we'll try it this time. I'm sure the planes are all filthy-I doubt much cleaning ever goes on of the seats and trays!!

Its not so much the seats and trays, etc.. it's the re-circulated air that is what does people in. When we flew with our baby, our pediatrician warned us that she would get a cold from that recycled, re-circulated air.. grosses me out and I already hate to fly.. just try not to think about it.

That neosporin tip is interesting.. may have to try that.

Hmmm sounds like this bug may be heading away from WDW as the last report of illness on this thread was Feb 5...keep our fingers crossed!:thumbsup2

We were at ASMo on 1/30 and at AKL from 1/31-2/7 and no one in our party of 7 got sick. We didn't see anyone sick or hear about anyone being sick and we visited a park everyday. I almost let the thought of getting sick ruin my first few days, but then I quit worrying so much. We just washed our hands a lot and I did disinfect our room when we got to AKL. (Although it was probably for nothing because mousekeeping came in to clean even though our "Do Not Disturb" sign was out.) Please don't worry about it and let it ruin your vacation! :)

It's an antibiotic creme that you put on cuts/scrapes and is usually found in the first aid aisle with the bandaids. Neosporin gets kind of pricey, but we've found the store brand to be just as good (on cuts, anyway, we've never tried it in our noses since we don't fly).

Oh, I got it! I misunderstood and thought it was a spray or something. Just the regular neosporin ointment. Will definitely be trying this idea! Thanks! I never would have thought of this.

We came home on Jan 17th and were very careful because we heard about this ahead of time. Sanitize yourselves but more importantly, sanitize your kids after every ride and before meals. Wipe down your table and your childs highchair before sitting down. Nobody in my family got sick nor did we see/hear anybody talking about the virus. My biggest problem is that I get sick 3-4 days after getting off the plane. That's where all the germs are. My whole family swabbed the inside of our nostrils with neosporin (to keep passageway moist w/ the anibacterial boost) before we boarded and wiped down our seats/trays with clorox wipes. Boy was that plane dirty. This was the first time I didn't get sick at disney and I owe it all to neosporin in my nose. IT WORKS!!

It might be the wiping of the tray tables etc on the plane that did it more than the neosporin in the nostrils since most of the sicknesses are caused by viruses (stomach flu) which are not suseptable to antibiotics (or antibiotic ointment). Probably something like diluted tea tree oil or oil of oregano (which I believe have been shown to fight bacteria, viruses, and fungus) might work better. I had a sore in my nose that wasn't responding to fucidin (strong antibiotic ointment) so I diluted some tea tree oil with canola oil and swabbed my nostril twice a day and it went away very quickly. I think there is something to be said for non traditional medicine.:thumbsup2

Oh my - I am severely allergic to Neosporin, so I can only imagine the problems I would have if I did this! I can't even touch something that someone has touched who has used Neosporin without breaking out in very itchy, seeping hives. I'd be a mess! So far (knocks on wood) I haven't had a problem with illness after flying.

I'd agree with the Clorox wipes though.

We stayed at AKL from 1/31-2/7. On 2/1 at 8pm we had the first child go down with projectile vomiting. By 9:30pm #2 started vomitting on the bus back to AKL. shortly after getting back to our room I started. So three of us stayed in the room on 2/2 to recover. By early a.m. 2/3 #4 started vomitting, around noon #5 started and by early p.m. DH(#6) was experiencing symptoms. Around 3a.m. on 2/4 I became ill again and it lasted most of the day. :guilty:

Our symptoms were forceful vomitting, diarehea, stomach cramps-BAD, and nausea.

We arrived at AKL around 2pm on 1/31 and stayed on resort. We didnt enter a park until 9am 2/1. We either got it on resort or on the ME bus from airport to resort. The bus was packed and they had us putting young kids in our laps to make room for more adults. On Sunday in the parks I did see vomit on the ground in several spots and the bathrooms we used were not clean and had an oder not associated with cleaning products. Bathrooms counters and floors were littered and trash receptacles were overfull. DH said mens restrooms were very dirty and we ended up using the baby care restrooms. This bug has not been in our community as of yet so we know we didnt bring it with us. Actually strep and mono is going around here and i was very fearful we would bring that with us. Instead we arrive healthy only to be knock down like bowling pins on resort. Blech!!!!!!
It is NOT better to be sick at Disney. I would have much rather saved the $6000 and been home.

We were at AKL from 1-25 to 1-31. No sign of any sickness. Not in our family or anyone else's.

Just as a p.s. We didn't fly - we drove.

Hmmmm...I'd like to know the stats on whether or not those getting sick did fly to WDW. Several posters have written about flying down, worrying about the air on the plane, tray tables, etc.

I am very sorry to hear that your entire family got sick. How miserable. I can't imagine spending that much money and not being able to enjoy the trip. I feel so bad for you all.

We stayed at the Poly 1/22-1/30 and 8 hours after our plane landed I had the full blown stomach flu!!!!!. It started Thursday night and I wasn't out of bed until Saturday afternoon. I had read all of the posts before we left and thought "oh that won't happen to us". Well, it did, but only to me. I was traveling with 9 yo DD, 8 yo DN, myself and sis in-law. No one else got sick:worship: :worship: I have to say that the staff at the Poly was fantastic.  My sis-in-law told the Mousekeepers in the morning I had been sick throughout the evening, but I brought Clorox wipes with and cleaned up as best I could. The mousekeepers were very appreciative. 2 ladies actually came in 2 times on Friday to check on me and brought me Sprite and crackers:yay: :yay: They were wonderful!!!:yay:

We drove, we never fly. We got sick.

It's something at the parks.

I am very hopeful with the arrival of warm weather and hot sunshine, the germ will find it hard to live on outdoor surfaces, at least, and burn itself out...

I hope you are right, because it will be very warm when we are there!

This thread had me in paranoia before our trip in Dec!:lmao:
But thankfully none of us came down with anything while we were there. My only advice to those who are going (and this is what we did) is to wipe down most surfaces (hotel room, and tables before eating) with some form of anti-bacteria wipes, use hand gel, wash hands, and boost your immune system. I gave my kids over 1000mg of Vitamin C and B complexes every day before we left and some days while we were there. I think the key is boosting the immune system BEFORE your vacation, as most viruses take at least 48hours to show signs and symptoms.

Good luck to all those going! Here's to healthy vacations in 2009!;)

We've actually decided to cancel our trip due to this illness going around...hopefully the 4 plus 3 will be there for us for Dec. As I stated in a previous post 2 out of the 6 of us travelling to Mexico this past Jan had this virus and was very sick and I would just worry while there so hopefully things will calm down.:sad1:

I'm sorry you've decided to cancel your trip...
I hope it works out for you when the time feels right for you...

Even though this has all seemed to die down,
I have to say, I still think about this once in a while and can't help but think about the refillable mugs being a culprit in helping to spread germs...
When we were at Pop, we observed that the refillable drink stations were all so busy all the time. Most people just rinsed out their cups in the rinse sink and refilled. Think about this that they are held and touched all over the place and then not washed (sanitized) (not by all anyway) and then you put your mug there after to refill...
makes sense to me anyway...

I brought dish soap from home and washed our mugs out thrououghly each night. I was glad I did. Made me feel better anyway! :upsidedow

Eh, possibly... but much more probably, you got it on the plane, or even before you left home. According to the CDC (the folks who would know) http://www.cdc.gov/Ncidod/dvrd/revb/gastro/norovirus-factsheet.htm - see the Clinical Presentations section - the normal incubation period is between 24 and 48 hours. Your first person fell ill about thirty hours after you got to the resort, thirty one hours after you got on the DME bus. Numbers four, five, and six seem to have caught it from one, two, or three, and your relapse seems to be, well, a relapse.

I can't believe this thread is still alive....this is so sad. Anytime you go anywhere you have a chance of getting an illness. Especially a vacation touristy place with lots of people. And to cancel a trip based on reports on the internet on a message board which is completely the opinions of others, not hard facts...... I think it's so sad.
We were there for 2 weeks in January- no illness, didn't see anything odd anywhere. We used purell, that's it.
A cruise ship that's verified to have had problems? I'd stay away from that, but life in general can make you sick, and unless you have special health coonsiderations just going and living life is the best bet,IMHO.
