Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

Anybody that has been there this past week and gotten sick??? oh this makes me so nervous especially eating at the buffets which is most of our ADRs

we were just there...12/27 to 1/3 and our 2 kids got sick there mid-week and my hubby just was sick today! I have been spared so far. A person who has been sick with Norovirus is contagious for up to 2 weeks after being sick. Once infected, symptoms show up within 12-36 hours. I am trying to be very careful here at home since the other 3 of 4 of us are contagious!!!

we were at WDW last Sept. & 2 of the 3 ppl in our family got this stomach bug.
it was horrible, i knelt on the bathroom floor in our AKL room and honestly thought i'd have to call 911. i don't remember ever being so violently ill.

someone i work with visited WDW at Thanksgiving and all 4 ppl in his party got it as well, same symptoms.

lousy way to spend your vacation!

This has been spreading since August. All 4 of us got it when their in august. Thank goodness we did not have a repeat of this when we were their in December.
I hope they get a handle on this soon. It stinks to be in the most magical place on earth and be that sick.

i'm sure it wasn't intentional, but i feel like your post insinuates that you didn't get sick because you were more careful or more clean than the people who have gotten sick...which at least in my case is not true. we had read this thread and well aware of the dangers and made sure to take as many precautions as we could and it still happened.

also, to all the people who say they didn't see any sick people while in WDW, i'll say that at least in my situation, nobody in the rooms around me or the parks have seen me sick...because i can't even leave the bed! and if the other people who have had this bug feel as bad as i have, i doubt they're wandering out in public either. :sad1:

No I didn't intend that insinuation. Just sharing our experiences. I think we were mostly just lucky but knowing how awful these illnesses are at the best of times, let alone on hols just thought I'd share some of the precautions we try to take for all of those posters who sound really really worried-and I agree with you, you can do all you can and still get sick and as others have said, you can't let that rule your life. Travellers need to take whatever precautions they feel might help, say a prayer or two to the travel gods and go with a positive attitude. I am sorry that you were struck down so badly and your vacation spoilt and trust that it is behind you now and hope that you were able to salvage some magical moments before or after illness struck.

Ick I'm sorry!! That sucks!!

As someone whos entire family has just had (and the baby still has) the stomach bug (Norwalk, Norwalk-like, norovirus or some sort of gastro bug) if anyone gets it now and then goes to Disney if it's the same strain, which I am assuming it is as long since it seems to be everywhere, your body will build an immunity to it for a few months so this if it's still in Disney when we get there we should be protected. Finally something positive comes out of the torture we have all endured for the past 4 days!:thumbsup2

Last year I worked at a babysitting room at a YMCA. I brought my 1yo and 4yo with me. I ended up having to quit because they both spent 4 months with stomach viruses. (Members would bring their still sick kids since they felt it was a necessity to work out.) Our dr said that apparently you do NOT develop immunity to these viruses and just like the flu they have the ability to change slightly to create different strains. So you can continue to get reinfected. I used bleach, clorox/lysol wipes (neither of them contain bleach) and Lysol spray. I washed their sheets and blankets in bleach and hot water. They still got sick. There's just too many surfaces. And with little children, you can't expect them not to put their hands in their mouths. I can't even imagine trying to disinfect a place as big as WDW.

We were just there 12/28 to 1/6 and nobody in our party got sick nor did we see anyone getting sick. I think there is a nasty stomach bug going around ALL over the place every year around this time, isn't there?

We were at WDW 12/31 - 1/6. I was ill on the 5th, violent vomiting and a fever. Luckily it only lasted about 12 hours. My body is still sore! Many people saw me being ill as vomiting occured in public places. Somehow I was able to drive back to our hotel between bouts. Thank goodness my daughters didn't get sick. I was lucky, I know it could have been worse, on a cruise one year my husband was very hard hit and had to be hospitalized briefly on the ship and our family was quarantined in our room. And my husband is the germaphobe in the family, always taking extra precautions, avoiding buffets, etc. I don't think I necessarily caught the bug at WDW and you can never know for sure, as it is the season.

At Crystal Palace I saw a girl lick her fingers and then use the serving spoon to take some dessert. I told one of the workers and asked for a new spoon, he said since I had informed him he had to replace the food too and asked if I could wait.

The Poly needs to hire additional help to keep the bathrooms clean and trash emptied. The upstairs ladies room was awful when we went to Ohana. We went in to wash up before dinner. I would have gone to another restroom if I had a baby to change. There was a broken wine glass on the sink and it was still there when we washed up again after dinner. I had told the CM seating us about the restroom and her response was odd - 'you wouldn't believe what we get told about the restrooms' ... I was really expecting something like 'we'll get it taken care of'... but I never imagined that it wouldn't have been tidied up. If it happens again I'll ask who I need to speak to to get the bathroom cleaned. We love Ohana but that bathroom was a real turn-off.

Has anyone thought about setting up a google spreadsheet or map (you can leave your name off) w/ what resort you were at on what dates. And what parks or buffets you visited prior to illness?

we could localize this info for ourselves?

Subjectively, it looks like POP and AKL are among the worst and POR/PFQ are mostly spared.

What do you think?

-mommyrants- this sounds like a really idea, I hope we can set up a speadsheet. I see you are going in a month...we are currently planning our trip, we are looking into the 1 or 2 week of Feb, so it would be nice to have this info, maybe we could avoid this if it is still lurking. We were planning on staying at AKL, i did not know they were hit hard by this........i would move our room to avoid it though

We were there 12/18-12/23. My brother was the only one who got sick. However, I don't think it was the same bug because he had no vomiting or diarrhea, just a horrible chest cough and aching all over plus a fever. Either way, he missed a few days in the parks. Nobody else got it though.

We ate at buffets, swam in pools, did just about everything... Unfortunately DB got sick, but I have a feeling he had contracted the illness before we left since it was on the third day.

Wow, that sounds like the beginning of the flu, if you get the flu shot it may shorten the illness period. Hope everyone gets the flu shot, I did for our entire family, we arrive in two weeks. I think I'll bring all the wipes, etc maybe even a flame-thrower for added protection against germs, and those Haz-Mat suits too!! I'm glad I got the insurance for this trip as if an illlnes ruins the trip I'll get some type of compensation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone.

Actually I thought BC and GF were some of the hardest hit!! I have seen only a handful of people on here talking about getting it who were staying at POP or AKL...of course I could be wrong!!

Ok, so I built a Google Spreadsheet. It requires no sign in and will not track your access. Your DIS ID is optional. This is for information purposes only. If you visited a park before someone in your party fell, just put an X in that box. If you visited Buffets, please list the names.

Been there, done that, and it was at Disney World. We were at the Dolphin and I started not feeling well around 3 pm and by 4 it had hit full force. By that evening my 2 year old had it too, running from both ends as they say. My husband brought us with him to attend a convention (him) and play (us). He ended up missing a whole day of the convention to take care of us. We were one sick mommy and one healing but very clinging baby. By the third day we were feeling much better and sent daddy off to the convention. At noon he came back to the room babbing incoherently, feverish and all out sick. He went downhill all afternoon and evening. The scariest part was that in his condition, he couldn't fly home the next day. I really thought we'd have to leave him there in that condition and go home ourselves. The next morning he was more himself and able to travel, not well, but able. Our flight wasn't scheduled until 4 pm -- you know take a late flight to enjoy that last day at Disney. Ha! We wanted out of there and to just be home so we called our airline, they had spots on earlier flights if we could get there. I flew around the room packing and had it done in about 10 minutes. We had no shuttle service so asked for a cab and got some kind of Lincoln Town car, nicer than any taxi cab I'd ever been in. It cost us our last $50 in cash to get to the airport. I was weak and feeling faint, my husband was a funny shade of green and not quite sure where he was and our daughter just wanted us all to be ok like she was. We get to the airport and the guy unloads our bags and stands there waiting for his tip. My husband shook his hand and said thanks an I just burst into tears apologizing for no tip and told him our whole sickness saga. He was very nice about it. I can't be certain but as we walked in to the airport I could swear I saw the driver wiping his hands on a napkin! We got the very last row in the plane, my husband spent about half the flight in the bathroom, but we got home. He went to bed, I wanted to go to bed, but darling daughter who was feeling pretty good now, just wanted to go trick or treating. After all it was Halloween! (Incidentally I took her to about 4 houses and she was happy. Good thing because I was beyond wiped out).

So there you have it. Our Disney sickness story and don't think we don't worry about it happening again. We are avid hand washers now. You can't wash enough!!

I've only seen a few people from GF that reported sickness. I've seen many from POP (my aunt and uncle stayed there and uncle got sick last day) and AKL also more than any of the other places. I think its everywhere though so all you can do is take precautions and hope for the best :confused3

My friend is at Disney now since Jan 1st and she is staying off property, She said they (3 out of 7 of them) are sick with vomiting.

I'm going to POP this Sat. and AKL mid week...you have me very worried if the majority of people are getting sick there! :sad2:

What do you think?

It would be cool but I don't know if it would be statistically significant. I mean, we're literally dozens, maybe hundreds, out of the tens of thousands of people that were on-site every day.

I think that if you sent this thread to a local Orlando paper they might find it interesting. Either that or they're *so* sick of hearing about people getting sick at Disney that they won't, lol.

My older ds gets sick every time we go on vacation. It doesn't matter if we drive, fly, spend a week in a hotel, a lake house owned by my family or a condo...he always pukes at some point.

Sometimes I think we are just more prone to catching stuff when we are on vacation. Less sleep, around new germs, poor diet...none of that helps.

We have never looked back on a vacation badly though because someone got sick. Usually it messes up a day or two, but we are able to enjoy most of it.

So, while I'm nervous to go and deal with this...I'm hoping that if we get it, it doesn't last too long! Feel better everyone and good luck to those that are going soon!
