Backpack inspection

Umbrella and metal water bottles carried in front of us. We also had a travel set of metal knives and sporks to use at Festival of the Holidays, and we had to hold that out in front of us too. Sometimes it still got pulled over for inspection.

We were park hopping with droids which (obviously) set it off. The problem is they wanted us to open the droids to look inside. Our BB-type droid had an extremely tight catch, and our hands just slipped off every time we tried to twist it open. Finally the security guard twisted it for us with his rubber gloves gaining the necessary purchase.

I’ve taken to throwing my phone (if it’s not on my lanyard around my neck), power bank, and my personal fan into a gallon ziploc and carrying it in front of me. Haven’t gotten pulled aside since then.

We thought DH triggered the search the first couple days with the power bank, but when we left it behind one day, his backpack still got searched. We did have an umbrella in the bag and a couple bottles of water. The following day, he went bagless, lol.

When we were there, it was my husband's sunglass case and his camera that set off the check.

A few years ago, I had about 6 cans of soda and it triggered. Not sure if it was the number of cans or if one would have triggered the alarm.

I haven't been through security for a few years but one thing that I did notice was that it was triggered when people refused to open up the storage areas in their backpacks. (all of them). If one stubbornly refuses to open them before they get to the bag check it triggers a thought that there is something to hide. And the hope was that they would just look in a few that one might have opened and let you go through, but all it takes is one unopened pocket to make them wonder if it was intentional or accidental therefore let's check the whole thing.

Bag checks these days while probably still advisable to at least have some pockets open you just walk through a detector at normal pace so the days of everyone going to a table to have their belongings checked have been gone away with for a few years now.

It's only if the detector is set off that they will pull you aside to have a secondary check where they actually go through your belongings, you not having zippers open doesn't do that. Because of this the backlog of people is fairly low def. nowhere near what it used to be. People with strollers or wheelchairs or ecvs usually they only want one person to go through with them with the rest of the party going through the regular walk through.

OK, that's different, but I did say that I hadn't been through there for quite a while. I'm glad they upgraded the system.

My power bank and phone have never set it off. I always hold my umbrella and water bottle in front of me and never got stopped except for one time, it was my glasses case and Airpods Pro case. Security advised to keep them at the top of my Loungefly in the future. No problems after that.

I had a lot more trouble in my past trip and I did in trips prior. Maybe set it off 33% of the time and got waved through for half of those and searched the other half. For the most part they didn’t search very throughly, certainly not making me open every zipper like with the old bag check.

I try to always hold my phone, small metal water bottle, and large anker power bank in front of me. Usually those are fine. Fuel rod is small enough to leave in bag no issue.

I only had an umbrella once or twice and held it in front of me but set it off with that and was waved through, they were like “it’s the umbrella.” I’m pretty sure my metal sunscreen spray set it off a few times, I sometimes held it out and sometimes forgot it in my bag.

I also brought all 6 medals from Dopey through a few times, sometimes in my hand and sometimes forgotten in my bag and I don’t think those ever set it off!

No you're fine, the only reason I commented was because you said you hadn't been there in a while. I'm glad they upgraded it too. Honestly it's now probably better than Universal's system although I think theirs is just because the area in CityWalk where they do the detectors gets just a mass of people.

The last time I went to Universal they had the security in that big open lobby before the second moving sidewalk. It was a pretty quick situation. If I recall you went through a metal detector and exactly the same time your backpack, or what have you was going through an airport type baggage scanner.

Yes that's still how it is. Before Disney adjusted their process I always said Universal was easier and I preferred just putting my park bag on the conveyor belt to be inspected and I would walk through a detector. These days with how Disney does it with just walking through with your bag it overall I would say is more efficient (although guessing what sets it off isn't). That said Universal's process is still really good it's only when that backlog happens in the area because of the amount of people there that there's any sort of issue. It still runs quite smooth though.

For me it was power banks - I had to carry that with my phone in front of me. My Swell Water Bottle which was in the side pocket of my backpack (it was visible in the side pocket) didn't set off the detector while I carried the power bank and phone in front of me.

from the comments one this is clear it can be absolutely anything. One day it's one thing the next day it's another.
I usually see the same security people and most told me not to waste my time holding things in front of me just head over to the table. I just unzip all my zippers on my backpack and head right over to the table, it's makes it so much easier then trying to figure out which item today is going to set it off.

It's really not that much of an inconvenience anymore. I wouldn't plan around it; just take what you need and if you get sent to the side, so be it. It's really quick these days.
