Backpack inspection

Maybe obvious but no one has mentioned it yet. Laptops and iPads will set it off. I've been through security more than a few times with full luggage. Toiletries don't seem to matter.

My items that have set it off. I just don’t bring them, hold them out in front of me, or expect to be inspected. I always carry my stainless steel water bottle in front of me.

Metal eyeglass case
AirPods (magnet in charging pod)
Tin of balm/ointment
Ziploc with several pins for trading
Lots of coins for penny press
Camera stuff (Prosumer DSLR/mirrorless with removable lenses)
Battery brick for charging

EDIT: I think the zippers on my Loungefly backpack sometimes randomly set it off. They will never say that’s what it is, but they can never find anything and end up wanding my person looking for the mysterious item.

EDIT2: Droids. They will make you dismantle the BB style to see the mechanism inside the plastic ball. They just want the R style out of the padded droid backpack.

I stopped carrying a bag I bought specifically for the parks because it set it off every.single.time. And sometimes, the line to have your bag is searched is LONG.

Cute bag, but not worth the hassle (we visit the parks a lot).

We never get pulled now. Our phones don't set it off, and we put our metal water bottles in the stroller cupholders so we don't have to worry about them.

When we were there recently, I never set it off with my backpack or purse, even with a small power bank in my purse. My younger son, though, set it off several times with his belt buckle. It wasn't even a large one, just a regular cloth belt with a tooth style fastener. Somehow, that buckle set it off at a couple of different parks, but not the others.

What items in your backpack will trigger a backpack inspection? We plan to bring soft drinks in cans. Will we need to take them out as we go through the backpack inspection device? What has triggered a bag inspection for you recently?
Hard cases for glasses

The sensitivity of detectors can vary by park and by day - by design. Also sometimes it isn't about an metal item itself but about how something is sitting in your bag and how it looks on the screen.

My method is anything with metal I try to hold in my hands away from my person as I walk through. I always hold my metal water bottle and power bank out in front of my and I have not been stopped 95% of the time while doing this. Once I had an old light up pin on my backpack and that mysteriously set it off, so sometimes it’s things you least expect.
I carry a camera bag with a shoulder strap. Whenever I hang it on my shoulder next to my body, I almost always get pulled for inspection. However, whenever I hold it out in front of me at arms length while passing through the x-ray scanner, I almost never get flagged. What is the reason for this?

It could be the density of one or more of the camera bag contents, like a battery or other attachment, or as someone mentioned upthread it could be a zipper on the bag! I've also noticed sometimes the scanners are "more sensitive" than other times (e.g. one park AM entry is fine but a second park mid-afternoon I get searched), and my methods don't even end up working because something else in my bag mysteriously sets it off.

I think the last time we went, only Disney Springs had the new security. My husband got searched because he had his Nintendo Switch in his backpack (he didn't want to leave it in the car).

This is exactly what I was going to say. They change the sensitivity and it isn’t always the same so your experience can definitely vary by park and even day

As was mentioned, my sunglasses case set it off a few times time last April. After I figured out what it was, I held it out in front of me as I walked through. In November, I didn't bring it at all, but, then my wife set it off with an Altoids tin each time.

They told us batteries were causing issues. Maybe power banks?
Power banks for us.

Every.
Single.
Time.

To the point where my wife just tried holding it in her hand as she walked through the scanner but they still would pull her aside and request a backpack check.

I have had the scanner beep at me, while holding a metal water bottle out front, and the security person waved me on. I think the security personnel have the final say as to who gets inspected and who doesn't. They are looking at a screen, kind of like the luggage scanners at the airport. I guess if it looks like something obvious that they can recognize as fine, they allow you through. I haven't looked at the screens, but I wonder if they highlight the potential items or general location of the items.

The screen the guard looks at places a red box around the item that set it off.

Yeah I'll say umbrella and sunglass case mostly. And I'll add hold them straight out around chest high. I got lackadaisical on one occasion last year and had them down by my stomach and I got sent back to do it again.

My hard eyeglass case set it off, so I just hold it out in front of me. Was told it was the magnet on the case that does it. My phone was fine.
