I remember a recent vent thread where someone saw this and I thought "at least I've never seen that at my school". Well, now I have! Cars were backed up out to the main road to the point where the buses couldn't get in -and there sat this whole family, smack dab in the main drop off spot, eating their breakfast!

We used to have a family like that at our school a few years ago. :rolleyes2

What the heck? Is the OP serious? People really do this? I am at a loss for words. :rotfl2:

I don't understand. Were they in their car, just sitting there or what? At my dd's school they have school personnel that would knock on the window and make them move. As the next person in line I would absolutely be knocking on the window and telling them to move the heckolies outa my way. I ain't got time for that crap........... ;)

Yes, they were sitting in the car. It appeared they were eating poptarts, etc. Did people think I meant they set up a table????

I know they're not alone in this practice because there was a post about here it in the weeks prior to mine. We have a real problem with people sitting in their cars - apparently having conversations, etc. - while people back up behind them.

We have constant reminders in the newsletter that the drop off line is for quick drop off only and to park if you need to take more time. Occasionally the Principal even comes out to stand there and keep things moving - but the minute she's not there, they take their sweet time again.

There is a 6th grade patrol member there, but I don't really blame them for being afraid to approach someone that obnoxious.

They just don't make horns like they used to....whimpy little honks. My dad had a horn on a Buick Park Avenue that you just couldn't ignore!

There are several cars that pull over to the side so that they do not block the drop off line but I really feel sorry for those kids having to eat breakfast in the car everyday...just can't be very healthy. :confused3

We have people who park the car in the drop off lane, then go inside the school. It happens all the time, nearly every day. Always the same people, too. My son goes to a small school, and I know who they are. It seems hard to believe the school wouldn't know, too, but, they just keep sending home general notes not to park in the drop off lane, park in the lot if you need to go inside the school, etc, etc. If I were in charge, I would send a personalized note saying "YO--you in the gray Cadillac SUV, this applies to you. No parking in the drop off lane". Or something to that effect. I never pull directly up behind the car in front of me in line. Yesterday, there were two cars ahead of me, and my son got out of the car and was inside the school, and I was leaving the parking lot before either of the other two cars had moved. And they weren't parked, either. Just incredibly pokey.

This is the whole problem, most people that are breaking the rules don't think it is them that these "reminders" apply to. There was a couple mom's and one TEACHER that would always park in the drop off/pick up area at DS13's school in 6th grade. It would cause the biggest traffic headaches. The teacher I know well and her kids attend the Catholic school our twins are at and the rule don't apply to her there either.

Maybe they should institute a policy that if you park in the drop off lane you are automatically assigned playground duty or some other task at school.

I guess I am not understanding the gripe...is the Op upset that the family was holding up the line, or that they were eating poptarts in the car? I don't understand how the 2 things have to do with the other.

I understand the 'holding up the line issue'. It really doesn't matter why they were doing it, unless there is some emergency, it is rude.

But the eating breakfast part? Who cares if they eat in their car? Maybe they were running late that morning? I dunno. But, it doesn't sound like they were leisurely setting up camp and having a full breakfast. That would be weird. It doesn't take very long to eat Poptarts.

How do we know they are eating breakfast in the car everyday? And I don't see the health risk involved in eating breakfast in a car? Not that Poptarts are healthy eating (for any meal), but if someone ate a peice of fruit and some wheat toast, every day in the car...I would consider that a pretty decent start for the day.

I agree- I don't understand the gripe. At least they are eating something. Many kids are sent to school with empty bellies. The day after his birthday my son had birthday cake for breakfast.

PAW, I think she brought up the breakfast eating in the first place because it was a similar vent to someone else's and she was just surprised to see it at her own school.

Our drop off line at school has a crossing guard, plus the gym teacher comes out and opens the door for the kids and sends the parents on their way. Whenever he has a student teacher, there are actually three people out there to make sure it all runs smoothly. :thumbsup2

What gripes me are the ones who still blatantly break the rules and drop their kids off over this hillside beside the vo-tech and let their kids off there because they're in too much of a hurry to sit in that 1 minute line. We all know that some people's time is so much more precious than our own. A kid is going to get hit by a car that way.

If I am reading the OP correctly, she is venting because parents are holding up the line because their kids are sitting in the car eating breakfat. I'd be peeved too.

Oh, ok. I understand the idea of people holding up the line...I guess i just never pay attention to what they are actually doing. Our schools always have very long lines anyways.

And there usually are poeple who take longer than others, but I guess it just doesn't get on my nerves all that much. I guess if I had to sit in my car for like 10 minutes that would be one thing, but even when there are a few people who dawdle, it's a pretty smooth process.

There will always be people who feel that what they are doing is much more important than the people waiting behind them..if it's not breakfast, it's something else. That is why they make car horns. (kidding, sort of)

Just wanted to add...what is up with so many people dropping off their kids, anyways?

It never used to be such a popular thing as it is now. My kids ride the bus 90% of the time. I can understand if you didn't have bus service it would obviously be necessary, but I am not sure why so many people drop off, otherwise?

If you don't live within certain limits you are a "walker"...but no way would I let my 4 year old walk to kindergarten on her own and even not on her own it would be far for her to walk carrying a backpack that is 35 percent of her body weight. Even the 5th graders don't walk to school-they get dropped off, its safer. We used to ride our bikes to school but now if you show up on a bike they send you home. I personally do not like school buses and don't think they are safe-we do qualify for one and she uses it coming home from school but going she usually gets dropped off...school doesn't start until 920 and the bus comes at 845...she can use that extra half hour to sleep or get ready or finish up her homework from the night before.

Like I said, I understand when there is no bus service, I wasn't talking about that sort of scenario.

Our twins walk, but we are 5 houses away from school. DS13 gets a ride to school because we are a little over a mile away and for what ever reason, not on the bus route. There are some shortcuts through some fields he can take that shortens the trip but he has a heavy backpack and a trombone to carry back and forth so he gets a ride.

Two of my neighbors have kids that go to the school at the end of the street and they DRIVE them to and from school??????? We live in a safe town, there are about 100 kids that walk past our house everyday. I don't get it.
