My doctor mentioned it to me today. I am at least 50lb overweight. As soon as my blood work comes back she said she would discuss it more with me.

Does it actually work?
How do you like it?
side effects?

Any info would be great!!!

I took it last year. Well I took the generic form, Phentermine. It worked great! You will have absolutely no desire to eat, and you will have to force yourself.

I lost 20lbs in about a month. HOWEVER it is not a quick fix. You must teach yourself how to eat and be healthy while your taking it. IF not, the second you go off of it, you will gain the weight back, plus some. There was times where I was forcing myself to eat, but i knew I had to.

As far as side effects, you will drink A LOT of water due to the dry mouth. I had a lot of weird side effects on it, but my best friend had none. My DBF says I become a different person on it. I get mad and emotional and blow up very easily when I take it. Also, the first couple weeks I had a constant headache. I would take a half in the morning, about a half hour before breakfast, and I would have amazing energy. By 2:00pm I would crash and burn and take the other half. I would go home and clean and by 9pm fall asleep. But at 3 am I would wake up and be wide awake.

It's definately not a long term solution, and more of a metabolism jump starter. But it gives you the oppertunity to eat right, and start working out. The side effects are rough, but some people have none, and some people like me have all of them.

If you have any more questions, just PM me!

To the previous person's point, you need to change your diet and exercise more, that doesn't mean dieting, but change what and how much you eat, really it's a math equation.

You take in X and burn Y. If the result is a negative number you will lose weight, if the number is flat you will stay steady, if the number is positive you will gain weight. You can adjust X by eating less and change what you eat. You can adjust Y by changing how much exercise you get.

Pills are not the solution, they are a crutch, and eventually you need to get off the crutch, but the harder but better solution is never to need one.

There are message boards out there for phentermine users, too. Support/Before-After, etc.

I took it 10+ years ago and lost about 40 pounds in 3ish months. At the time I thought it was great even though it gave me the jitters pretty badly - as long as I was up and moving I didn't really notice it, but the second I sat down they would hit me hard. It's a "pseudo" amphetamine, so the side effects are on par with that - increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, loss of appetite... It does work short term, but you HAVE to learn how to eat right/exercise while you're on it or the weight will come right back as soon as you stop taking them.

3fatchicks.com has a good sub-forum about phentermine for weight loss.

I can never take it again because, combined with my GAD and panic attacks I would be crawling out of my skin all the time.

I think everyone KNOWS this. If doing it was as easy as posting it NO ONE would be overweight.

Back in the 80s I went to a doctor in Long Island who gave me an appetite depressant. I lost all the weight in 6 months and I kept it off for 20 years. I had to change my lifestyle drastically but nothing gives you that incentive like being thinner! I joined a gym and became a vegetarian, something I never would've done if I had not lost the weight.

My niece lost about 75 pounds about a year ago. She lives in another state so I witnessed it on Facebook. She told everyone it was exercise and water.

My sister told me she confessed to going to a doctor and using a pill. The pill was Adipex. I guess she didn't want anyone to know that she had used them due to the negative reception of anything like that.

She came to my son's graduation party last week and she looks amazing. She told me they got the weight off but SHE has to maintain it. My sister told me she's become an exercise fanatic and she watches everything she eats. She stopped taking the pills when she moved out of town but now she has the incentive to keep it up.

I wouldn't advise anyone using them without a doctor's supervision. She told me your pressure and weight have to be monitored in order for it to work.

A friend of mine had to lose weight for surgery. His doctor gave him Adipex and he lost 60 pounds and was able to have the surgery this past spring. Sometimes it's good for a quick fix, also.

Just like with anything, the internet, TV, music etc.. you can use it for good o r bad. If you learn nothing, too bad. But if you do, it might be beneficial.

I took about a year ago and I lost about 35 lbs. My doctor suggested it because I have chronic bhronchitis and I COULD NOT lose the weight I'd gained on Predinosone (sp?) even though I've always been very careful about what I eat and exercise, if not daily, then at least 4/5 times a week.

It helped me a lot. I found most of the side effects lessened after the first month.
