Anyone have experience cancelling air tickets?

We're having to cancel our trip to Disney World in June. Unfortunately I've already bought the air tickets (Delta). I'm certain there will be a $100 penalty for each ticket, but does anyone know what happens to the rest of the fare. Is it put in a credit account for later use?

I've never had to cancel before and appreciate any advise you guys have.

If you cancel the tickets, normally you can use the amount of the ticket for future travel. You will be charged a $100 per ticket change fee. So if your ticket cost $200 basically you would have $100 for future travel. The other problem is that you cannot use a Delta credit for web based fares which are normally a little cheaper. So even if you see a great fare on Delta's website you may not get it since you have to call. You will also have to go to either your TA or the airport to pay for the ticket.

Wait until the last schedule change, if you're lucky the flights will be changed by enough to allow you to get a refund.

I had an incident where I had to cancel one of my tickets on Spirit Airlines. I called them to get a refund(yea right) and I tried every lie in the book: I cant go, my hotel is closed, i've been recalled for active duty in the military. They didn't budge. The best they could do was give me a 1 year period extension that I could use it for and only have to pay $75. The way I see it, its better than losing the ticket and buying another one later. Plus, it gives me an incentive to go to WDW again

I had an E-ticket with Delta and cancelled the ticket. I was able to use the credit when buying a new ticket over the phone. If you have a paper ticket then you will have to go to a TA or Delta ticket office to get a new ticket with the credit.
