Hi All,
I know with all the athletes we have here that a few of you mst have had rotator cuff surgery. I went in to the DR on Monday to get my MRI read. I had some tears and he said that he normally wouldn't recommend surgery but it was just going to get worse. Didn't need to do it right away but I should think about when I wanted to get it done. I said OK, let's do it but I needed to work around my wife being out of town and I needed to be able to train for the Goofy (although I told him the marathon because he wouldn't understand the Goofy) Long story short, they had a cancellation for the next day. Take it or I would have to wait until the middle of August. Took it!

The tears were worse than they thought and they ended up fixing some others parts while they were in there. I am not 100% sure because when he told me I was still pretty much in a stupor. I don't see him for another 9 days.

So, give me hope. Did you recover fully? When could you run again? He did say I could run in a sling but not the way it feels today. It's only been 5 days though. I need to keep the sling on for 6 WEEKS! :scared1: Went to PT the very next day and am doing passive PT for now.

I need encouragement. I feel like I am just sitting here getting fat. popcorn::

Thanks,
Duane

PS Took me 20 minutes to type this one handed

Duane, I'm sorry to hear of your surgery. You are trained up and your recovery will be quicker because of it. When you are feeling a bit better start walking even if it is a little bit. I found from what I went through in Feb (not rotator though) that it did help and I actually could walk and kept getting stronger. Support what you need, I think they give you a pretty good set up and off you go. Take your time, but make it steady. You'll be back at it soon. As you sit around and do what you can with your legs to keep them strong. Simple movements make a difference.

Best WISHes for a speedy recovery.

Duane,

This is the surgery gang here:) You know what I have and am going through. Like Lily said, find some lower body workouts(bike, leg machines, etc). You will be ready to go like the rest of us for Goofy in Jan.

Chin up as the hard part is over and every day you are closer to being 100%

Have you started PT? That was the really tough part.

My shoulder was pretty bad by the time I had surgery. I had almost no use of it so it took a while to recover, but you should be able to do stationary bike as I remember. I started swimming about a month after surgery and at 3 months doc. said I could start swinging a golf club. It really took about two years to get it strong again, but you can still get your running/cardio in shortly after surgery. Always ask the doc. first.

Hope your rehab goes well.

I never had it, but FIL. Rehab is tough, but you will get better. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for speedy healing!!!

Duane:

As a veteran of multiple knee surgeries, I can only offer this advice/insight:

1) You will recover

2) as long as you don't cheat the PT exercises at home, you will recover faster, better and more completely than if you blow them off. I'm not saying you would, but its easy to not do them when you feel like you can't.

Yet another example of short term goals conflicting with long term goals.

Long term: recover

Short term: be comfortable and ignore the exercises.

Good luck my friend!

Mike

Thanks All,
I am diligently doing my PT which isn't much yet. I use my left arm to move my right arm around. Sounds kind of lame doesn't it? They did say I could start using a stationary bike once the stitches were out.

Compared to my knee surgery, this is tough. Not using my right arm is a bummer. Sleeping is a real pain with the large padded sling. Less than 5 weeks to go :)

enjoy,
Duane

I'm glad you've got a good attitude and happy to see you are making sure your other arm is being used, i.e. posting here!

:wizard: Every day will be better.

I hope they did not have to open ya up a whole bunch. The less the better.

I had mine done a few years back, yes sleeping is rough, that will pass. Mine was due to trama, not wear and tear. At the time we lived in Jackson Hole and I knew the docs well, it is great when you get olympic ski team docs to work on ya.

It was awhile before they let me run as they did not want the bouncing till things looked healed.

A good PT will make all the difference, do as they say, work with the pullys they give you to start with for range of motion, strength will come later.

I am not as strong as before, but all is well, and range of motion is 100%.

Lynn liked it when the doc said my days of hanging dry wall were over, she hated helping with that on home projects. No biggie as I am not in the construction trade.

I do find it hard to hold stuff up over my head for extended periods of time. That is the only side effect I have noticed.

Time will get all healed up well, just do as the PT folks say.
