We are leaving tonight to go to MIL's. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive. It will be dark the whole time and I HATE traveling at night.

Last weekend SIL came up here and when she was leaving DH told her to watch out for deer because it was prime (rutting?) season for them so they are more active. Great. So THAT is stuck in my head also.

I have been in 1 car accident at night which is the main cause of my fear. DH is a good driver, but I white knuckle it the whole way. I'm sure I'll get a tension headache also.

If it wasn't for my DD I would be staying home. Put me on an airplane any day.

Anyone else have this fear?

I'm terrified of the deer also. One good thing about driving at night is that there's less cars on the roads. But, having no streetlights do make it more difficult.

We also take a lot of back roads after the first hour.

I don't know which is worse for me-no steet lights or the interstate speed.

I like following another car and DH hates it. Some times he does it for me though. :teeth:

I don't mind travelling at night on an interstate highway. I hate driving from Marshal, TX to Hemphill, TX. No street lights and curvy, hilly country roads, YUCK

I hate driving at night too. It's so difficult to see even with my glasses on and I usually end up with a headache.

Ugh. My eyes are really sensitive and I can't stand driving at night. Now that they have those super bright headlights (that may as well be highbeams) I get terrible headaches. That's why I like to make other people drive at night! :)

I don't care to drive at night because of my vision. I know that sounds like something someone in their 70s would say. I am 49, and for the past 5 years or so, driving at night has become more and more of a concern for me. I'll stay in, or get someone else to drive.:D

Absolutely understand. I don't like driving in the dark especially if it's no street lights. I don't blame ya. Even when we were vacationing in Hawaii I was terrified when we were driving by those mountains in the dark. Very deceiving. DH is a great driver, but it still makes me nervous. Plus I can't see good at night. Need to wear glasses for night driving and I'm only 35.:earseek:

I hate driving at night and hate riding in a car at night. When cars are coming towards us it looks like they're on the wrong side of the road so I always close my eyes and wait to see if DH slams on his breaks. Since he doesn't, I have to assume it's my poor night-time vision playing tricks on me. We live in an area that has a lot of deer darting across the roads. Last year DH hit one on his way to work and messed up the whole front end of his car.

Me, me, me...I hate night driving ! Iget a terrible headache and I really can't see with the glare of other headlights. I'm so glad to hear other people hate it too...I thought maybe it was just "old age" getting to me:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

I'm another one who hates driving at night......just within the last year or so. I drive a minivan which is higher than "regular" cars, so that helps, but then you always have the guy (?) with the huge SUV and those extra bright headlights blasting my corneas! Doesn't help that my eyes are also getting old..........:(

I only dislike driving at night if it is raining - that scares me to death. Otherwise, I don't really mind driving at night, sometimes I prefer it - less traffic.

It's scary. My eyes adjust very slowly to dark & light. I've purchased a pair sunglasses with light colored lenses to wear at night when I have to drive into lots of those new headlights.

I'm not too keen on night driving, particularly in the rain. I don't mind if the roads have street lighting, but I HATE it if there's no lights and the dopes coming in the opposite direction have their lights on fullbeam.
I've got a 2000 mile round trip in 2 weeks time and the news about the pesky deer hasn't cheered me up at all LOL.

rainy and dark yes then i hate it .. when no one is on the road very late i like.

I used to love driving at night since there is no one on the road - I still like it for long trips.

But, even though I'm only 23, my night vision is atrocious. I have classes on Tues. and Thurs. that let out at 9:30 pm, and I drive about 20 mph the whole way home, 30 miles. I wish I could take them at another time, but this is the only time those specific classes are offered.

Night driving can certainly be tough. Non lit back-roads are tough with curves and hills, poorly mark road edges. High speed thruways (I prefer them) are dangerous with high speeds. DUI's are more prevalent at night. And animals too, Jenn, as you said. Glare from rain slicked roads is tough on my eyes also.

The one tough thing for me is the growing number of clods who think they are being cool, driving at night, all the time, city or rural, with those dumb fog lights on. And with no fog. LOL. I have never figured that one out, other than the people think they are cool because they have fog lights. The only time they should be used is in the fog, when no other cars are coming, and without the regular beams. In the city, well lit areas, they enhance the lighting for that driver not one bit (you could virtually drive without lights, for seeing in front of you, in most cities today, but are blinding to oncoming traffic) But they have all four beams on, illegal (though unenforced) in virtually all jurisdictions. They are blinding to oncoming traffic, but the drivers have total disregard for others. But, we see that 'meism' so often today. Thanks for allowing me the soapbox, Jenn, LOL.

I enjoy driving - would much rather drive than fly, unless time is the critical factor.

Day or Night depends on where I am going.

Night time driving is best if I am just trying to get somewhere - like going to visit my granddaughters. It is usually cooler - the traffic is less - I have seen all the scenery many times. Generally, I consider it to be safer - you can "see" over the hills and around the curves = headlights of any oncoming car tells you whether you have to be concerned with some nut popping up in front of you on your side of the road.

Day time driving is best when I am in a new place - want to see all the sights, plus it is easier to not get lost - have to put up with the heat and traffic.

Wildlife on the road is a real hazard in only a few areas. In west Texas, it is definitely a concern in the rural roads.- not so much on the interstates or other major arteries. Just slow down in those situations.

When driving down lightly travelled two lane rural roads at night when deer are apt to be present - I drive down the middle of the road - this gives me more chance to see a deer entering from the right side of the road.
