I know this may seem strange but I've always wondered what an acorn taste like. Anyone ever tried one?

It's bitter. Don't ask how I know.

We used to eat them when we were kids. Weird kids, evidently.

They are very bitter, almost like a crab apple. Yup, ate those too.
Not something I'd recommend.

Peggy, I can't resist; How do you know? :p

I could have tried one once but I didn't want a mighty oak to grow in my stomach:jester:

I've had acorn bread. It's a Native American thing. I worked briefly on a reservation. You have to mix the acorns with a little bit of dirt (lol) to take away the acidity.

Oh, and you can't taste the dirt.:D

I used to break them open when I was young and thought they smelled funny. That kept me from ever trying one.

What's a crab apple? I've often heard of them but I'm not sure what they are.

They're very bitter, very green tasting. Almost like eating bark. Don't ask, I was a very inquisitive child.;)

Oh, that's funny that you mention bark, the other day I told my DH if I was lost in the woods I'd probably eat bark. :p

LOL I tried just about everything as a child. We ate crabapples routinely, just to prove we could. Bleck! I also ate some pokeberries once. Don't do this, they are poisonous. I thought they were elderberries, which you CAN eat, and look similar.

Hickory nuts are better than acorns but still not as good as black walnuts.

If you have to eat bark, you want the soft underbark. . .the crunchy outside stuff is hard to chew and won't provide you with much sustenance anyway.
