American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

and my mom's aunt's friend's uncle's cousin said that he used to date Paris Hilton too!

:sad2: honestly...this is how stupid rumors get started.

and can i say i'm not a preteen, neither is my fiance, and we both voted for Blake. thanks. i just wanted to say that.

He really does have a comedy demo that he is peddling. It's not a rumor. Even Kathy Griffin said he gave her one. She wouldn't comment on it, but her face showed that she wasn't impressed at all. If you remember at the beginning of the season he did some crazy character.

I must be the only person on the board that thinks Melinda CAN'T sing. I hate watching her facial expressions and her stiff body movements. I think she seems like a truly nice person, so I don't dislike her. I just don't like watching or listening to her sing. I admit that I was totally shocked that she left though. I thought for sure she was going to win it. I thought DD14 was going to cry if Blake left. She was screaming and jumping around the living room when they said he was staying. So, next week should be fun. I want Jordin and she wants Blake. We'll be battling it out with our cell phones, lol.

Oh yeah, I have to say that I liked Elliot's soing, but the teeth were just TOO perfect. I couldn't stop staring at them. And why wouldn't he open his eyes?????????? It annoyed me.

Just a few thoughts on last night. I was sad but not shocked to see Melinda go. See my review for this week.

Funny AI season, I haven't had a favorite since Phil was eliminated. I think Melinda may very well do better by leaving now. I have CDs I've made up of this year's performances and when I just listen to her vocals they really do take me away. I think watching her is a distraction to the purity of her voice.

Jordin has had her moments as well. Her rendition of I Who Have Nothing (the first performance) was one of the high points of this year's shows. She's got a way to go as far as performing though. While I realize she's only 17 , her abilities on how to present certain types of music have been way off. Standing up there and looking cute is not always going to convey what a song is suppose to make you feel.

Blake may have the worst voice of the three who were left tonight but he has been the entertainer. The past few performances by him have left me wanting more but let's not forget Time Of The Season, I Need To Know and several others. He did what the girls could not, he made you feel the music.

Because of season 5 we now know that you don't have to win AI to be successful. Look at Chris, Bucky and Elliott. :thumbsup2 All have wildly popular CDs. Once Taylor gets out from under AI's thumb, I believe he will too. If you can find a copy of Taylor's Ain't No Sunshine, give it a listen. That is the type of music he was born to sing and when he does... :faint: :faint: :faint:

Love seeing Elliott again but, while I'm glad he had his teeth done, the chicklet effect really turns me off. The hair would have been OK if it was shorter. The other group that was on got muted real quick. :headache: I though Blake sang their stuff better than they did.

So who do I want to win? Blake. I would rather be entertained than just sung to. That's why I loved Taylor and Bo. I still don't and probably never will understand the mass appeal of Kelly and Carrie. Carrie has a great voice but I see little improvement in her presentation since AI4 and, with Kelly, same thing except I don't think she can sing as well as Carrie.

As always... JMHO. :teeth:

I agree about Taylor. I loved his version of Levon. That was amazing

Also Carrie has a way better voice than Kellie. during the ACM's when Kellie sang the Duet with Reba. You can tell Kellie was out classed and out of her league singing beside Reba. Reba still has it looks and voice.

I think that Melinda has an entertainment quality and passion that exceeds both Jordin and Blake. However, I think it is her look that kept her from winning this competition. Melinda always seemed to be older, more professional and much more conservative than the others. I don't think this is what the majority of folks are looking for in a female idol winner.

OMG! I forgot about the eye thing. What the heck was up with that? He never did that when he was on AI. That's a habit he really needs to break quick! :sad2:

I think you're mistaken. Indeed, it is the fact that she's already been a professional that eliminated her from my mind as a contender for American Idol. If she couldn't become a star, having the opportunities she had before AI, AI won't be enough to bridge the gap she suffered from. She knew people; people knew her, and yet no one was willing to give her a chance before the public spectacle of AI? Seems to me that she'll do her one or two albums, they'll sell as poorly as all the experts who knew Melinda prior AI thought they would, and then she'll end up on the third or fourth tier -- pretty much where she was originally.

See this is what bothers me.

Why aren't you saying this about Jordin? She is a professional to. Possibly more than Melinda. She has an album, she has been on tour twice with another singer, she has appeared in plays in Tennessee. The list goes on. She knows people, why didn't her album take off? We'll see but if she keeps hitting the clunkers she has and only singing one type of song I'm not sure how far her career will go either. I know I won't be buying any but will buy Melinda's and possibly Blakes.

We won't be able to tell whether America got it correct, this year, for at least a year or two. For all we know, Jordin could end up the #1 seller of all AI winners in history. (If Blake wins, I don't think we'll be able to say that, but who knows?)

Bicker, I have said that about Melinda almost from the beginning. She has been out there, she's been a background singer. If anyone thought she had potential to sell music they would have signed her. (Mariah Carey was a background singer and they saw her potentail and made her a star for example.) Melinda has a good voice, but she has forgettable presense. I don't remember any of her songs at all, yet I remember Jordin and Blake and Lakisha and Chris Richardson. Heck I even remember Sanjaya.:scared1:

Well said Damo. I find Melinda to be a wonderful perfomer and I look forward to seeing her in concert (if I can get tickets...I live in Chris Richardson's hometown so tickets will sell out even faster than usual this year) and buying her records!

I think someone said they got a new drummer.

Funny you say this.... my DH used to be a touring musician and had toured with M5's current drummer. At that time he was touring with Gavin Degraw. Regardless, that particular drummer molested my belly when I was 8 months pregnant with my first DD. (Bascially he kept putting his hands all over my stmach and massaging it).I think he was a little tipsy at the time...but when we were watching Maroon 5...I go "Ack!!! Its the belly molester! Its the belly molester...!!!!" My DH goes...oh YEAH....I heard he had joined Maroon 5....WEIRD.:scared1:

I didn't know any of that about Jordin until you posted it. I've never heard about any of that.

Even tho I am rooting for Blake, I'm bummed for Melinda. :( She is such a nice person, and so talented. What a class act. I know she will be successful, but I'm sad for her tonight.

Then again, I would have been sad no matter who was voted off. I think I most wanted Jordin to go, but if she had gone I would have been sad too.

I agree with every word you said.

Blake!!!! :cool1:

Jordin has toured with CCM Musician Michael W Smith (a lot of people won't have heard of him, but he came up the circles with Amy Grant - writing music with her 25 years ago before having his own music career). http://www.michaelwsmith.com/blog-detail.php?pageid=59261 She's a beautiful girl, with a great voice - I think she'll end up doing something.

Sometimes people just need a larger break. There are a lot of singers/songwriters and actors who are "in the background" for years before they are discovered. Or they move in circles - like Jordin - where they are exposed to a certain population, but not millions.

I haven't yet even seen yesterdays episode, I forgot all about it! I should have it on the DVR. I am shocked that Melinda is gone, she has a GREAT voice and I enjoy watching her every week. This was the hardest 3 for me, I like them all.

Re: Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood...
:scared1:

Those were my LEAST FAVORITES!!! Wow, I guess we all have our opinions!

Those two being the best selling Idols - BY FAR - in history doesn't say much for your abilities as a judge, Robin. ;)

Sadly, I'm not surprised to see Melinda go. Jordin has been gaining momentum quite a bit for the last few weeks, and Blake...well, Blake gets a lot of votes too (and that's all I'll say about that. )

But I think Melinda going probably just won this thing for Jordin. I can't see Melinda's core audience voting for Blake, as they were probably attracted to Melinda's singing ability and that...isn't something she had in common with Blake. :rolleyes1 Just like last year, the final doesn't really hold a lot of suspense for me. I knew as soon as Chris got the boot that Taylor had the thing sewed up, and this is no different.

(And to the person bashing Jordin...let me guess...you were one of the ones that couldn't stand Kat last year for the same reason, right? :sad2: Yeah...her dad is well off (he was a DB for the Giants, by the way). And this should be held against her...why, exactly?)

Does anyone have a link to any of her stuff before AI.

Just to add my 2 cents. I pretty much agree with what the majority of you are saying - Melinda was good, but she didn't have the market appeal that she needed. I'm surprised she went, but not shocked.

I hate to say it, but I can't wait for this season to be over! I think one of the main reason AI is so huge and the debate about favorites can be so heated is that you become invested in these kids and in their lives - it's not "just about the music" as it is so often stated. I don't think they let the audience get invested this year and that could be why it has been met with general apathy.

In exciting news, So You Think You Can Dance starts in 7 days!!

I personally don't care if they are "professional". I'm sure that most AI contestants are professional, at least to some degree. If they are at all talented, they have earned money doing it, no matter how little or how much.

The point is, they have not "made it" yet, nationally. Perhaps in their city or state, they are well known, but that isn't the smae as being nationally known.

The pool of contestants would drop to many, many lesser talented contestants if the rules stated that you can't have earned a dime from your music in order to audition. That would be silly.

This is all about opinions. I think Blake and Jordin are the more talented, someone else thinks Melilnda is. No one is correct- not even professionally trained musicians like myself. So as far as America "getting it right"- there is no such thing. We all have our opinions and preferences.

Very well said Damo! :thumbsup2

In the long run, this is the best thing that could happen to Melinda. She will not be forced into the American Idol pop singer mold. The same thing happened with Chris Daughtry last year. Taylor Hicks would have been better off too - singing the type of music he was meant to sing.

As much as I loved Melinda, it's true that Blake or Jordin will fit the image of the "youthful" American Idol - someone they can "mold" to their specifications.

I've watched this show all but the first season and I've yet to pick the winner - mine always finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th - Clay Aikin, LaToya London, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry and Melinda Doolittle. Guess I need to stop choosing the best vocal talent and go with the best "entertainer".

Taylor and Chris both had bands last season. not well known and needed a break to make it big. its the same with any job or carear. sometimes you just need that extra help to make it big. whatever that may be for your profession. I dont think we should condemn a person because they have a musical background. thats why they are trying out for the show. its a show to find the best undiscovered talent everyone who tried out had a shot not just the ones singing at the local clubs or whatever. its not like Bon Jovi and Madonna are trying out. people are too quick to judge sometimes

The judges supposedly don't know the results until they are announced, but I think they knew tonight. That would be why Simon was in a more crappy mood than usual. Melinda was "his" girl. Mine too. She & Blake were my pick for top two.

I also think Simon knew, because I thought he made some kind of a face or something when they said that his pick for the finals was Melinda. I'd have to see the show again, but I thought I saw something in his expression.

Woo-Hoo! So long Melinda..hello watchable finale!

My mom and I were watching last night and we both just about fell out of our chairs and did the happy dance. I'm sure Melinad will be very successful in her career.
