American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

That's okay, I don't know when albums in genres I don't listen to come out either. Yeah, I think most everyone from last year has put out an album. There were so many good people last year, and they were all so different.

I was really surprised that Melinda went home, but I'm not that upset about it or anything. You're right, she will get a record deal, and she should do very well. Look at last year's contestants as an example. I don't think I would ever get so upset over the results as to say that I wasn't ever watching the show again. I watch the show for entertainment, and so I don't get so emotionally involved in the outcome even though I do have my favorites. Even though Melinda got voted off, I think that it will be a good show next week with Jordin and Blake, both of whom I think are talented as well.

I guess I don't really care who wins. I like them both.

i agree, the show is for pure entertainment. honestly......if it were JUST a singing competition.....it would be on the radio, you know??

not to get all defensive, but here's my opinion (again).

1. it's not just 'teeny boppers' voting for blake. im 21 (ok not for another 16 days) but i vote for him too. im not a teeny bopper. I know adults that vote for him as well. He's a terrific entertainer, and he has his own style of singing. Not everyone is going to like every kind of singing... whatever. just wanted to state that it's not just the teeny boppers.

2. have you people forgot who won last year?? it was mr. wedding singer himself.... taylor 'watch me bust a move' hicks. don't get me wrong, i loved taylor, but Kat was the better "singer". Just like this year, melinda/jordin are the better "singers'" but blake is the better entertainer.

3. It's up to america. i hate to get political on a fun board, but it drives me nuts at election times too... if you don't vote, don't complain. everyone is allowed to say what they think. but some people come out and say stuff like 'this is crap. it shuldnt be this way and im never watching again' so the question is.... do you vote?? and when people say 'well, no. but...' ugh! instead of not watchin, why don't you watch and pick a new person you like?

again, i mean no disrespect from this post, just some things that have been buggin me that i needed to get off my chest. thanks for reading my vent.

out.

I disagree as much as I liked Kat last season and I agree she was a great singer. Taylor had a great voice too and entertaining to boot. If Blake had half the voice Taylor had I would pull for him but he just doesnt have a good voice and doesnt deserve top 10 in my opinion.

hey Dan, i just wanted to ask you a question.....and i mean this in a total non-disrespectful way.....i'm not trying to be a jerk and i'm not being sarcastic.....but have you liked any of the male contestants on Idol?? i'm just trying to see what kind of vocals you like with male singers.

You must not have followed me much last season or through this thread. I was all about Soul Patrol last season. Rubeun Studdard is my all time favorite Idol winner. I liked Chris Sligh and Brandon this season. its not a guy bashing jealous thing like I think you are thinking. I liked Blake at the beginning in the group rounds but when we went top 12...nope sorry something just didnt stick with me. Elliott last season was poison to my ears.

So yes I habe like some guys this season....a few pages back I even commented on the Taylor Hicks concert tickets I just bought. Very excited. I also like Daughtry last season and thought he should have been in the final 2.

Hmm, that's a good point! Never thought about it like that before.

you have to have the whole "package" you have to be marketable to people that's why the do it on national television, to see who's the most marketable.

no i didn't think that's what it was. that's why i made the comment "i'm not being sarcastic or rude" because i know it could have sounded like it, but that's not what i was getting at. i was just wondering what you liked.

i didn't follow last season here on the DIS, you're correct.

have fun at the Taylor Hicks show, it should be fun!

That's true. Simon's always saying how it's a singing competition, but then they go and comment on the contestant's looks and moves. So I think that the marketability factor comes into play on the show. I'm not sure how much of a hand the producers have in the results, but I think that the producers want the most marketable person (versus simply the best singer) to win so they (the people involved with the show) can make as much money as possible. Also, the viewers will vote for who they like best, again, not necessarily the best singer, so I think it's a bit of a popularity contest as well.

Apparently the information about Blake handing out demo tapes of his comedy material is true. On THE VIEW today, Elisabeth (a HUGE Blake fan) mentioned that she had received an e-mail from Blake thanking her for her support. Kathy Griffin, who was guest co-host, said she had met Blake recently and he had given her a copy of his comedy tape.

Well, I'm disappointed to say the least! But, then again, my picks never win Idol. Ever since I've started watching in Season Two, I've seen Kimberley Locke (and to some extent, Clay Aiken - I can't stand him, but I do think he has a good voice), Latoya London, Nadia Turner, Katharine McPhee, and now Melinda Doolittle bite the dust before they deserved to.

As much as I think Blake shouldn't win Idol, I don't want Jordin to win. I think she's been overrated the entire season. Blake showed last night that I might like what he would produce if he were to go the route he went last night.

All I know is that I'll be purchasing Melinda's cd the moment it hits iTunes!

That is just so wrong! :( I like Jordin and Blake is ok but Melinda sings far better than he does. The only thing I can figure is that the other two split the vote.
No, I think it is just that Jordin and Blake come across as more entertaining singers to more people. Melinda is technically superior, but entertainment is not just all about technique. It also involves creativity (Blake) and passion (Jordin).

This is a great result IMHO (and not just because it is what I said would happen :)).

This is a really good point. I think folks criticizing the results need to be a little careful. You're disappointed, we get that, but don't demean your fellow viewers, and therefore fellow DISboards members, because they have a different perspective on who embodies the word "idol" than you do. I'm a little older than 21 twice-over, and practically all my votes this week went to Blake.

2. have you people forgot who won last year?? it was mr. wedding singer himself.... taylor 'watch me bust a move' hicks. don't get me wrong, i loved taylor, but Kat was the better "singer". Just like this year, melinda/jordin are the better "singers'" but blake is the better entertainer.
And I'll disagree with you about Jordin. I see her as every bit as good as Blake. She is a superior singer, technically, like Melinda, but also has the personality and charisma, perhaps even more so than Blake does.

We really shouldn't be surprised about this should we? After all during these six seasons "The People" have only gotten it right twice. (Season 1 Kelly Clarkson and Season 4 Carrie Underwood):rolleyes1
We won't be able to tell whether America got it correct, this year, for at least a year or two. For all we know, Jordin could end up the #1 seller of all AI winners in history. (If Blake wins, I don't think we'll be able to say that, but who knows?)

Sure Melinda deserved to be this years American Idol, but since she is a true professional, extremely talented, and consumate performer, she'll have no worries because she'll be signed in no time. They'd be fools to let her get away.
I think you're mistaken. Indeed, it is the fact that she's already been a professional that eliminated her from my mind as a contender for American Idol. If she couldn't become a star, having the opportunities she had before AI, AI won't be enough to bridge the gap she suffered from. She knew people; people knew her, and yet no one was willing to give her a chance before the public spectacle of AI? Seems to me that she'll do her one or two albums, they'll sell as poorly as all the experts who knew Melinda prior AI thought they would, and then she'll end up on the third or fourth tier -- pretty much where she was originally.

I really dont have a favorite genre of music. I would say as I age I listen to more country music. I have always loved George Strait he is my all time favorite. I have seen him in concert 6 or 7 times and own all 30 of his cds. Growing up my favorite was New Edition but they started going downhill when Bobby left and Johnny joined. I love rap. Kool Moe Dee, Whodini, Kwame and now Eminem and of course LL and Will Smith. I know its strange just yesterday I was listening to Run DMC and 5 minutes later I was listening to Alabama.....:confused3 .....my favorite kind of song is a ballad, slow love song. I am a sap I guess wife says I am a romantic. I guess thats why I liked Ruebun so much. I also enjoy the 80's hair bands. I think the only music I am not a real fan of is Hard head banging music. Although I did like Metallica. I guess what it boils down too is I just like a good song. not what everyone else thinks is a good song but what I think is a good song. is that clear as mud for ya. :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

Well I'm twice your age plus a few years and I voted for Blake. I've only voted a few times on American Idol - last year I voted a few times for Taylor and Chris, and the year before for Bo. I think I prefer their style of singing to the R&B/pop/country music the women on AI perform. The only exception this year was Gina - her I would have voted for had she stuck around to the end.

As much as I loved Melinda and I'm so sorry to see her go (I would have preferred it be Jordin), I do think its more than a singing contest. And I don't think it really has much to do with age, you like who you like. Just like in life, people are attracted to people for different reasons. I'm certainly not a teeny bopper, nor do I have a crush on Blake (thats just an icky thought for me, quite frankly) - I just like his style best.

:scared1:

Those were my LEAST FAVORITES!!! Wow, I guess we all have our opinions!

Another NON PRETEEN who likes Blake... in fact I could be the GRANDMA of a preteener!!:lmao:

I know, I'm sick of saying this but I like to be entertained. I like people who are a bit different or quirky and I can recognize the minute I hear them. I have a degree in theatre and cringe at the sound of the typical "singer"... anyone with enough money to study enough can be a "singer"... but can you entertain????

I also like people who touch me. I don't know what some of the posters were talking about the "arrogance" or "stuck up" qualities of Jordin and Blake... :confused3 Huh??? I don't see a DROP of it.

I saw it in "I'd rather DIE before I smile and enjoy myself bop up and down and slap my hip Carrie UnderWOOD"

And I also saw it in ShortBald and Surly... one of the least friendly looking and surly people ever on Idol. I did like his voice but I couldn't stand his attitude. Never liked "bad boys" like most girls do. I'm the BAD girl...:rotfl:

I LOVED Melinda, she was sweet and humble and wonderful. My only "problem" with her... and sorry, I can't forget it... was during the "dedication" song. She dedicated her song to her STYLISTS????? WTH?? And they obviously needed to be FIRED! Sorry, I'm a chump when it comes to family and I loved how Jordin and Blake were with their families. So what her Dad was a football player  ,does that dictate the fact that she can sing????

Man... it's way to early for me to be so ON but I just read the past few pages and it seems AGAIN like sour grapes. We all have our druthers and our opinions and we will, like every year, agree to DISagree. :thumbsup2

Mark this day down in history because I agree with Bicker! ;)

Melinda is pretty darn near a flawless singer. I will readily admit that. But that's not all it takes to make it out there as a singer.

Many of the hugely popular recording artists right now are far from perfect singers. We saw this year and last that some of the mentors that AI had on hit quite a few clunkers themselves singing live. Maroon 5 last night, hugely successful - but if Adam Levine was on American Idol and sang like he did last night, he would be gone. To channel Randy "It was pitchy dawg!" :rotfl:

DW Lauri and I are far from teeny boppers - both of us are 40. The only votes we have called in this season have been for Blake. Bon Jovi night and final 4 night. Sure he's not a perfect singer like Melinda but we enjoy his voice and are amazed at what creativity he shows in a very small amount of time that he has to get ready each week.

I can't even think of any recording artists that Lauri and I really like that I would call perfect singers (like Celine, etc) Heck, Lauri's favorite band is The Clash - ever listened to Joe Strummer? (RIP)

Just a few thoughts on last night. I was sad but not shocked to see Melinda go. See my review for this week.

Funny AI season, I haven't had a favorite since Phil was eliminated. I think Melinda may very well do better by leaving now. I have CDs I've made up of this year's performances and when I just listen to her vocals they really do take me away. I think watching her is a distraction to the purity of her voice.

Jordin has had her moments as well. Her rendition of I Who Have Nothing (the first performance) was one of the high points of this year's shows. She's got a way to go as far as performing though. While I realize she's only 17 , her abilities on how to present certain types of music have been way off. Standing up there and looking cute is not always going to convey what a song is suppose to make you feel.

Blake may have the worst voice of the three who were left tonight but he has been the entertainer. The past few performances by him have left me wanting more but let's not forget Time Of The Season, I Need To Know and several others. He did what the girls could not, he made you feel the music.

Because of season 5 we now know that you don't have to win AI to be successful. Look at Chris, Bucky and Elliott. :thumbsup2 All have wildly popular CDs. Once Taylor gets out from under AI's thumb, I believe he will too. If you can find a copy of Taylor's Ain't No Sunshine, give it a listen. That is the type of music he was born to sing and when he does... :faint: :faint: :faint:

Loved seeing Elliott again but, while I'm glad he had his teeth done, the chicklet effect really turns me off. The hair would have been OK if it was shorter. The other group that was on got muted real quick. :headache: I though Blake sang their stuff better than they did.

So who do I want to win? Blake. I would rather be entertained than just sung to. That's why I loved Taylor and Bo. I still don't and probably never will understand the mass appeal of Kelly and Carrie. Carrie has a great voice but I see little improvement in her presentation since AI4 and, with Kelly, same thing except I don't think she can sing as well as Carrie.

As always... JMHO. :teeth:
