American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

I fell asleep before Kevin came on. I have no idea what he said to get folks upset? I did see Katherine and she was spectacular. Stevie Wonder is hard to sing. I agree that it is time for Kevin to go.

Randy and Paula gushed over Kevin.

Simon said it was appalling.

Kevin said he didn't expect much from Simon. The crowd loved it. Ryan loved it. I think Kevin had saved up some anger from all of Simon's criticisms and let it fly.

If you look at when they announced the top 12, Kevin seemed shocked to be there. But - maybe he is just going to enjoy the rest of the ride.

If American votes according to the performances last night I think the worst performances were: Ace, Kellie, Kevin and Melissa and with Melissa forgetting the words (which I still say is unacceptable in this type of competition) then Melissa should be the one going home.

**I'm not totally convinced that our votes even count anymore, I think "the powers that be" decide who's leaving when**

It's funny that Kellie has had so much attention because of her country bumpkin demeanor. Isn't Bucky actually a country bumpkin himself? Of course, he doesn't act as ditzy as she does but why isn't he getting the same attention for that?

Because he's not playing it up to get votes. He's actually trying to get by on his singing. While Bucky won't win, he at least won't be as much of a laughing stock after the show is over.

I want Paris to go home because I'm tired of her bobblehead impersonations...and I think Ace in TERRIBLE.

ITA! Ace is *always* mugging for the camera...ugh. It'll take more than a automatically-generated stale come-hither look to get my AI votes. I'm surprised that he doesn't cocl< his shoulder, look back at the camera and do his best imitation of a Hollywod starlet's red-carpet pose.

I missed what Kevin C. said to Simon as well. Anybody want to fill us in?

Just MO...the best men were Chris Daugherty and Taylor Hicks, the best women were Lisa Todd, Katherine McPhee(sp?) and I also liked Mandisa (even though she was very weak in the beginning). The worst?...Kellie, Ace, Bucky, Melissa.

I'm not fond of Paris, her speaking voice just drives me nuts - like nails on a chalkboard  .

agnes!

If DialIdol.com is correct then I'd be okay with any of the bottom four going home. Although one of them would be somewhat of an upset to some.

After Randy and Paula were done gushing over him Simon said it was "atrocious" or something like that. Kevin said "Well, I wasn't expecting much from you anyway"

To that, he got Paula, Randy and the rest of the audience applauding.

Please don't judge the contestants on their disrespect to Simon. It is 100% producer created drama. In Season 2, Kim Locke was flippant to Simon week after week, until she almost went home because of it. We later found out the Producer's told her what to say every week, and she refused to do it after she almost got sent home. I'll never forget learning this tidbit.

The producer's want them to talk back to Simon.

I just visited dialidol.com and I want to know who are all these people voting for Kellie??? I just don't get her appeal. I find her country bumpkin act annoying and since everyone else is hung up on Bucky and Elliot's teeth I got to tell you, I don't like Kellie's teeth either.

I really want a guy to win the competition this year. Chris or Taylor should win. Katharine is the only girl in the bunch who can sell mass appeal records.

Mandisa is a wonderful singer but I can't get over her weight. I know that is wrong but she isn't just a "little" heavy. I was actually uncomfortable watching her perform with no shoes on last night, it made her performance unappealing.

I really wish they would post the voting results. I sure hope the contestants at least get to see the results each week, because otherwise, who is to say Ayla really got the 2nd lowest number last week?

Whoever, in that first season, was the first one to hold up their fingers to remind people what number they were should have those digits cut off. I just HATE it when they hold up those fingers with the pleading look. Bo did not do that last year and he got a vote from me for it.

Paris. Shut up honey. You sound like a dork when you sing your thanks. Just be quiet and thankful! You have talent. That's what got you there but that singing thanks thing is getting old and makes you look like you are on something.

I am a singer and I used to be a very large singer, 320lbs. Someone once gave me great advice. "Everyone knows the fat girls can belt it out Nancy. Don't belt. Just sing the melody and add some color. Some belting is great but not the whole song. Show some control and intensity with a lower volume." Those words hurt at the time but I tried it and I won a competition with that advice. I wish I had a way to gift it to Mandissa. She has a gorgeous voice. She has control too, she is entertaining and just a doll. I want to hear her sing a torch song, to stretch herself that way. I suspect she would do an amazing job.

Posting the voting results would be painful and detrimental to the contestants. Say Taylor received tens of thousands of more votes than anyone else...if I were a contestant, I would be hurt. I don't think it would "force me" to do better, rather I think it would depress me.

Plus, there is no way that AI producers are manipulating the voting tallies. They have a hit show on their hands, are making tons of money, and they would have HUGE lawsuits on their hands. Hmmm....this voting fraud idea seems to turn up every year, but it seems awfully early this season...

I'm not a Stevie Wonder fan so I was actually prepared for last night to be worse than it was. I was suprised though to really enjoy some of the performances.

Ace: I am so OVER Ace. I loved him at first, but it got less every week and the Butterflies song really killed it last week. Awful this week too.

Kellie: WHY is she on this show? She is so FAKE I can't stand it! She doesn't know what a minx is, but she knows the word aracnaphobia?

Elliott: Boring. I think he could have picked a better Stevie song for him. I like Elliott, but tonight wasn't his night.

Mandisa: Started off not so great, but it got better, not her best performance, but I still really like her.

Bucky: Awwwwww Bucky! How CUTE was his smile at the end? I was really worried about him doing Stevie, but he did a really good job! I really want him to make it to the top 10! If for no other reason than he is as GENUINE as The Pickle is FAKE.

Melissa: Terrible she forgot the words, but at least she owned up to it. I believe she really was just nervous and they flew out of her head. I would much see her make the top 10 over Kevin, Paris or Ace!

Lisa: At least she went uptempo this week, but no matter how hard I try I don't care for this girl. All her performances make me think of beauty pageant talent competitions.

Kevin: Go home Kevin...that is all.

Katherine: I've loved Katherine from the beginning. I see her going all the way to the Top 3.

Taylor: Just awesome. Taylor is amazing. And he gets extra points for only one "Woo!" last night!

Paris: I liked her so much at first, but I really can't stand her anymore. I'd love to see her go this week but I know it won't happen. She is so annoying and a major camera hog.

Chris: I'm sorry, he is good, but he sounds the same to me every week. It's like he sings the same song just puts in different words. I like him, but he needs to do something different. "Out of his comfort zone" to quote the judges ad naseum.

I hate the "comfort zone" comments the judges are always making. They knock Bucky for playing it safe in his "comfort zone" but praise Chris for knowing his strengths by doing the Red Hot Chili Peppers version of a Stevie Wonder song? :confused3

Kevin is a joke, but I'd still rather see Fantasia II go home. She is horrid.

My two cents:

Ace, Ace, I don't want to lose your face... FIND A SONG YOU CAN SING, MAN!!

Kellie: Daisy Mae, go sink in the CEment pond!

Elliott: The Lord of the Rings did okay last night!

Mandisa: I like her but she just did okay last night. First part was worse than last part.

Bucky: He is so likeable, and I thought his hair would've looked better on a girl. He did okay.

Melissa: No excuse for missing the words, no excuse at all. She's the 12s first casualtyl

Lisa: She showed a little bit more gumption last night, still too Diana DeGarmo to me.

Kevin:Kevin, Kevin, Kevin... I thought I was going to DIE when I saw Chicken Little on his sign!!! LOL!! I think he's the comic relief.

Katharine: There is just something about her I like. This is her second Aretha rendition and she pulled it off... man, I'd be all over her like a sledgehammer if she messed up!!

Taylor: I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS MAN!!!!!! OmG, he even looked scrumptious last night. He could sing me the telephone book!!

Paris: She had begun to wear on me but she did an excellent job last night. It was the first time I saw a little bit of her Hollywood week performances.

Chris: Not my cup of tea but good, nonetheless.

Top three:

Taylor (my future DH)
Chris
Katharine

Bottom:

Ace (my ex love :badpc: )
Melissa
Kellie Bundy

Kevin, Kellie and Ace have solid fan bases, they will last a bit, I think, no matter how badly they do. I don't think Melissa has a fan base and will be gone shortly. Taylor and Chris have the biggest fan bases, I think, and both will go far unless they trip and fall on their faces.

Taylor is MINE I tell you MINE! Even though I am old enough to be his Mom. He is such a performer, and Stevie seem to like him too! :thumbsup2 I agree with you about Kellie, too funny! :rotfl:

I'm rewatching the show with my DD(because she was sick last night) and Kevin's on, it's so funny! :lmao: I think he's totally in on the joke, he knows he's not the best or a sex symbol but he's having a great time with it. Go Chicken Little!! He may be terrible but at least he's not boring. :rotfl2:

Taylor was just as good the second time watching, go Taylor! :thumbsup2

I didn't get a chance to write my reviews so I'm going to quote tarmand because I totally agree with everything except for Paris.

tarmand said:
Ace - Horrible. He tried to work the audience, but it came off as manic to me. He'd better hope that his looks carry him cause his performance won't.

Kellie - Go home Pickler. I'm tired of the country bumpkin routine and the performance sucked and bored me to tears.

Elliott - I usually like his voice, but tonight didn't do anything for me. Yawn, can someone entertain me, please? I expected more from him. Oh, and was he saying "I don't wanna bore you wif this"?

Mandisa - She has a great voice, but she screamed a bit too much tonight. I enjoy singing - not screaming. I thought the shoe removal was a bit oogie. Another so so performance.

Bucky - Okay, I love Bucky. He's a southern rocker and while his voice isn't perfect, his entire performance is always enjoyable to me. I think he rocks.

Melissa - No excuse for forgetting the words. I don't care if you change songs midway - LEARN THE WORDS! Her voice was decent, actually better than normal, but I can't forgive her memory lapse.

Lisa - I like her, but she is just not getting better like she should be. She does well with a ballad, but I didn't enjoy her upbeat performance as much as I thought I would.

Kevin - Painful. The entire thing was horrible. I also agree with others that you don't back talk the judges - to me, it shows that you can't take criticism well. And believe me, you totally deserved the criticism. His Chicken Little head has exploded.

Katherine - Wonderful! I love her voice and her stage presence is commanding. One of my top five for sure.

Taylor - It doesn't get any better than Taylor. He's great - enough said.

Chris - I really enjoyed his performance. While it was somewhat a cop out, it was totally brilliant for him to go with what works for him. If he would have tried to sing like Stevie, he would have bombed. Sticking in his genre really worked for him.

Paris - I thought Paris was terrific last night! It was nice to see her shine again.

My top 3: Taylor, Paris, Chris (though I don't see Chris as the overwhelming frontrunner like Simon does - Chris is good but he's still in the same league as Taylor and Paris)
Please go home: Kevin

All I could think of when Kevin got up to sing was a wedding where this cute little 10 year old gets up, grabs the mike, and tries to sing. All the relatives think he's adorable, but talented? Absolutely not! I'm so mad that he was allowed to stay and yet, Gedeon, who'd at least do a decent performance, went home. My 3 favorites right now are Katharine, Chris, and Taylor, followed by Bucky. Frankly, Taylor didn't appeal to me at first, but he's growing on me. I believe his talent is winning me over-I can't deny it.

I thought the show was not that great. Stevie Wonder should only sing Stevie Wonder songs. If I had to rate my favorites it would probably be Taylor.Katherine, and Chris. I also have to say I like Bucky. He is not the best singer but I think he is very geniune. More than Kellie. Who I think should go home? That would be Kevin. I also think Melissa should go just because of the fact she forgot the words to the song twice. The one singer that really annoys me is Paris. She can sing but she is too full of herself. She needs to bring it down.

I don't care for Melissa either but everyone saying she should go home because she forgot the words do you remember when Clay forgot the words to Vincent? I don't care for Melissa voice. She and Kevin are the bottom 2 in my book.
