ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: Summer 2011 Edition!

Hi Tess .I have been a lurker here for a good many years and I've always enjoyed your take on the Poly , .Always love the Polynesian pouts at the end of your trips ,sadly this will probably be our last vacation at Poly in January.I just read about the plans for the resort but I think we'll be okay .This will be our 7th visit the 1st time we paid 189.00 a night now its over 500 big ones:scared1:I think for that kind of money we'll do the real deal! Anyways I wanted to formally introduce myself and say hello.:goodvibes

:thumbsup2We've settled on the Poly over the CR for our March 2012 vacation. I'm looking forward to it! However, I remain nervous about not getting our request granted and not having a patio or balcony. This would be difficult during nap time w/a 2 yo. No where to go! Someone tell me I shouldn't be worried please :thumbsup2

You're welcome :flower3:. Glad you are confident to keep this secret....your DS is gonna love it when he gets there :goodvibes.

Oh I got this now. There is no way he will know until we pull into the Poly. Once I make my mind up to do something, I stick to it.:flower3:
I can't stand it! I've gotta let the cat outta the bag too!

I'm making my final preparations for our Halloween room decorating and it is KILLING ME not saying anything to my family about it! Jane from Gifts of a Lifetime is really going all out. She's even going to put a skeleton in one of the beds, which when she suggested it I thought was hilarious!

I have to keep my mouth shut for 13 more days! I feel like I'm gonna explode!!!

You can do this. You made it this far you can make it the next 12 days. Take a deep breath and release.:flower3:

:laughing:I was in your shoes a few days a go but I have also have 252 days left.:rotfl:

Hi goofybabe:wave2: and welcome. If you could enlighten me or direct me to the plans for the resort, I would be most grateful. We are staying at the Poly for the first time in June 2012 as a surprise for our DS.:hippie:

Coachbagfanatic, here are the plans according to Tikiman's site:

Pretty sad day if this is true although I do have faith in Disney to do it right.

I also just read Tikiman's report. Still lots of questions to be answered. I hope Disney really does make the announcement on the 24th. I would hope that Disney knows how many loyal fans the Poly has and any major renovations will try to stay true to the relaxed atmosphere that we all love.

Anyone know if poly concierge offers any "extra" special offerings on their hor d'ourves menu on xmas eve & xmas day other than what's listed on the tiki man pages website? Thanks.

I can totally understand the issues with the GCH. It makes sense. But weren't the longhouses all stripped down to the studs a few years ago? Do they really have to level the place?? :sad1: I'm hoping the news isn't quite so drastic. I guess we'll know on Monday. We check-in on Tuesday so I might cry. :sad1:

I really hope they can find a way to expand without leveling the entire resort. The Poly is an original and if they rebuild it, I think it'll lose some of that charm. Rebuild the GCH, that's fine. It's needed. But like pps have said, the longhouses need to stay. I wonder if they can't build a new GCH and expand it so it's similar to AKL or WL with some rooms coming off from it. Maybe DVC rooms? It would need a new location for that, I suppose. :confused3 I just hope they don't level the whole resort. It would be a shame.

One day my sister & I were talking about this & looked at a map of the resort. We thought they could possibly take down a few of the longhouses on the luau cove side of the resort and luau cove & build a low rise DVC tower over there. Of course they would have to reconfigure a home for the luau, but they could fit in DVC without interferring with the majority of the longhouses. Hopefully it's not as drastic as Steve is speculating.

It would be sad to lose all of the Poly since it is a WDW original. They managed to add DVC to CR without levelling the whole place and they're fitting it in for GF ... just takes some creative thinking.

I think your chances are good to get either a patio or balcony :). The year we stayed at the Poly it was during free dining and I made 3 requests (Samoa, first floor, facing the volcano pool in that order). We had a night flight that didn't get us into MCO until around 11:30 pm, so we didn't check into the Poly until after 12:30 am and our first 2 requests were met, with them offering to move us the next day to fulfill the 3rd. So I wouldn't worry too much as I think your chances are good :thumbsup2.

I have to agree......it will be very sad if it's true. I would hate to see the whole resort leveled :sad1:.

I totally agree.

Just read Tikiman's report. I hope the rennovations aren't drastic if they do happen. The idea of leveling Tahiti and Rapa Nui just for DVC rubs me the wrong way (no offense to the lovely DVC people, but srsly). That and at only 200 rooms, he's right. It wouldn't make much sense.

Wow, the Tahiti beach looks like it needs some help :( It's grass, sand, grass, water. They'll need to do something about it soon, because it looks less than maintained.

Personally I'm sick of all the DVC that are going up. They already ruined the Contemporary and now the GF. No offense to those have DVC. I know, I know....DVC is huge for WDW and they will continue with it but geez, don't ruin the Poly.

I'm already booked for Nov 2012 at the Poly but getting a little worried about what is going to happen and what the state of the resort will be come next Nov if they aren't going to do anything until 2013.

Hi All - Arrived on Sunday - room was ready but they put us in Tuvalu instead of Tokalau. They sound alike so the reservation CM probably misunderstood me. We are living with it but it is not my favorite. They weather has been great but today - our MNSSHP day - there is a severe weather warning - thunderstorms and windy. Ugh. Hope it improves.

They didn't check ids at the pool on Sunday. Had dinner at Kono's on Sunday - very good. Last night we were at the Garden Grill which is our granddaughter's favorite. :goodvibes

I saw online that Typhoon Lagoon was closed today due to the weather! Hope your MNSSHP isn't ruined tonight!

How is the room in general?

Thanks!

Glad to have been of help over the years goofybabe!

As to the upcoming "changes" at Polynesian. I think everyone should stay calm and wait to see what happens down the road. As with all things Disney--changes are planned, changed, replanned--rinse, repeat and repeat.

While we're all speculating though, has anyone noticed all of the surveying and activity to the north and east of the Polynesian. It would be north of the TTC and across from WL and Contemporary. . .they were working in that area a year ago when we were there and I noticed earlier this month there was still activity in the area. . .hmmmmmm. . .?

I have to say...I am really, really conflicted right now. We are booked for the Poly for July 2012 for 8 nights. I have always wanted to stay at the Poly since I was a little girl...I was so excited for my family to be able to experience it. But, yes, I do read reviews, and I try to say that of course people who are angry are more likely to post, but that in conjunction with the rumored changes...well, that leads me to believe that the resort is in such need of repair that they just have to level the place. Is this irrational? And, if they are going to level the place in 2013, why would they bother to change/fix any issues that are there now??? This would only mean more problems for my visit in July. :scared1: I just really don't know what to do, and it's pretty sad, I feel like I'm giving up on a dream. :guilty:

We will be at the Poly in about 2 weeks and we are totally looking forward to it. It is our favorite resort and we have been going yearly since '91. Could some areas use a little TLC? Probably. Is the resort in teardown condition? Hardly. Try not to worry until we all know what is going on. If rumors are true, we will hear on Monday about the plans for the Poly. I'll bet if we all looked around our own homes with such critical eyes we'd find plenty of things that need fixing or updating, but we still love them.

I am beginning to think that you actually enjoy resort switching. What happened to finally having come up with the "perfect" trip? I promise that Disney is not just going to start ignoring the Poly and its guests simply because a major overhaul may take place in the future. Just chill out and trust your gut! Or maybe step away from the DIS for a little while since individual reports/rumors are stressing you out so much..
