Okay so I have managed to snag all the ADR's I wanted. And we are 18 days away....and today.... The people who have decided to go with us inform me that their 20 year old daughter is going to go too. That's great. I hope she has a wonderful time but I don't think she is going to be eating with us. I made all the ADR's for 8 and she will make 9. When we show up at restaurants with one more would they accommodate it? Or should I just tell them that she is going to have to eat CS.

They should be prepared to make other dining arrangments for her.

Showing up with extra is often a big issue. Especially during FD, the restaurants will be booked to capacity, therefore forcing them to turn extras away do to fire codes.

You can always "try" when you get there, because it doesn't hurt. You may get lucky and they have a no show at that very moment. But as I said don't count on it.
Make sure they are aware of that.

Good luck and have a nice trip!

We will be in the world the last week in January. My Mom has decided to come along this trip making our family of 4 now 5 for ADRs. I had all our ressies booked and had difficulty adding her to some of them and our trip is MONTHS away. My guess is your extra person will be eating by her lonesome in most cases.

There is no way of knowing ahead of time. Many restaurants will have lots of vacancies or 1-2 in a party will not show due to illness, etc. Most places will try to accommodate you but the 20 year old should be prepared to eat CS some of the time if a particular place cannot accommodate.

To be certain, and as a courtesy to your friends, you should call Disney Dining and see if she can be added to any reservation. But the answer will most certainly be "no". (I am not certain that the person in Central Reservations has any way of knowing if a 9th person can be added to a table of 8. I think all they can do is see if there is availability for a new reservation of 9, and then cancel your 8. If that is true, the answer will almost always be "no".) At least this way you can explain to your friends that you tried. Then, when you are there, you can try to see if they can make an 8 round into a 9. You will probably have better luck at the restaurant because only the manager can truly know if they can fix the table for you. A manager will almost always say "I'll see what I can do", but a person on the phone will almost always say "It can't be done." If your friends know ahead of time that you tried and couldn't change the reservations, then if their daughter gets turned down at the door, at least they know that you did all you could. And if she gets in, they will think that you were sprayed with pixie dust.

Restaurants are set up at series of 2-tops. So there is a table for 2, table for 4, table for 4, table for 8.

When you go up one to an odd number, you are now asking them to basically add another two-top. Due to the arrangement of the other tables in the restaurant at that time, they may not be able to accommodate you.

Your best bet is to call and see if you can add her - if not, you may need to make other arrangements; i.e. part of the party goes to another restaurant with her.

True, but some 8 tops are rectangular with 3 on each side and two people on the ends, and others are rounds. An 8 round might be able to accomodate a ninth person if some of the eight are children or petite adults. Maybe.

It's not just finding a seat, it's adding to the capacity of the restaurant. And during free dining, the restaurant can often be at capacity.

Just make sure your companions know that she may or may not be accommodated and have a backup plan handy.

We have gone the busiest time of year, between Christmas and NYE and last time needed to add one more last minute...scouting trip and a parent decided to come along. We were a party of 11 and now it was 12. We ate TS every night and every single place was happy to add that extra person when we showed up and just asked. No problem....was their response and we went to very popular places, for the 6 nights. So go ahead and ask, don't assume it will be a No. Just be prepared.

I can't think of any round tables at disney.

now, the restaurant where I work would just "squeeze" the extra person in, but this is disney, and there are firecodes..

I wold suggest getting there a little early and "pleading"?

I can't think of any round tables at disney.

The photos posted in the WDW Dining section of the official website show numerous rounds. California Grill, Citricos, Flying Fish, BlueZoo, Jiko, Coral Reef and Cape May all show round tables for larger parties. And many have round or half-round booths. Open up the page for Cirticos and BAM! Right there on the bottom of the photo is a round 8.
