My sons school is hosting a Christmas party for abused & neglected children on Friday and we're buying presents for a 4 year old boy. The only clue is that his favorite color is blue and he want 'action figures'. What action figures are suitable for a 4 year old boy?

For that age, I would probably go with Imaginext super heroes or Playskool super heroess of Star Wars figures. Both the Imaginext and the Playskool figures are action figures, but made specifically for that younger age.

I would think super heroes or popular character action figures like Toy Story?

Imaginext has knights as well as batman, spiderman, toy story, and others. They seem to be pretty good quality. Some characters come with a DVD. My son loves those movies.

Super Heros like Spiderman, Batman, etc plus the Star Wars action figures. At 4 my son loved only the Star Wars figures. Now, at 7, he's in to the others as well.

My 4-year-old loves the imaginext batman stuff. Also, there is a line of Star Wars figures that is chunkier for little hands. Can't remember the brand off-hand, but they have 2-packs of figures for about $7, and then ships/vehicles that come with guys in the $30 range. My little guy loves those.

My 4yo DS has "action figures" that are super heroes, Toy Story characters, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, firemen/policemen, Ninja Turtles. You pretty much won't be able to go wrong with any of the action figures they sell now.

And kudos to you for hleping take care of the people that need it most.pixiedust:

Do they still make rescue heros? Those were great for a 4 yr old.

Can I also suggest sending along some kind of sturdy little bag to keep them in? Kids that age like to cart them around with them, and a plain little drawstring or zipper pouch with a clip on it might help him keep them together and and out of sight of other kids who might want to take them at daycare or preschool.

I second Rescue Heroes. They have big feet so they stay standing easily. DS had trouble getting some "guys" to stay standing and it would frustrate him.

I also liked that they were more real life heroes - firemen, police men, etc. - rather than having super powers, so it was easy for him to think he could be a hero too. YMMV on that one. :)

I don't think that they make the rescue hero stuff any more and it was GREAT. I agree that the basic bat man, spider man etc may be best. My six year old is a power ranger fan but I am not sure they are near as popular any more. I would not do Star Wars. Both my boys were HUGE star wars fans by 4 because our family was. Many four year olds do not have a clue what Star Wars is and the figures are not quite a basic as some of the other ideas. If it's in the budget, I agree that a bag or container is great and if possible, include a book or two about the figures you choose. Sometimes under privileged kids are not turned on to reading very early and having a book about a new toy may help.

I didn't read through the whole thread so I apologize if this was mentioned. For a 4 year old, I would say the Rescue Heroes if they are available. Another great little figure toy for little boys are the Galactic Heroes. DS#1 LOVED these as Star Wars figures, I have seen that they now make Super Heroes ones as well. They are chunky little plastic men, sized just right for preschool hands; they also don't have pieces that come loose. They are usually 2 in a package for about $7. They are great toys for on the go.

The boys in DD's kindergarten class last year were all very into Star Wars toys. DD, last year a chicken when it came to big rides, rode Star Tours at WDW, just so she could go back and tell them about it. Any superhero stuff was a big hit with that age too.
