$500 for a class ring????

Wow, there's no way my parents would have bought me a class ring and then I'd never have wanted to spend like two month's wages on it either!

We also got my daughters ring at walmart and she was the one to pick the place to buy it at. The ring looked the same as the ones from the school. I was impressed with the quality, options and prices.

I think my parents paid about $110 in 1984/1985 for mine. And since about 1987/88 it has sat in a jewelry box....I think? Actually, I'm not even sure where it is.

I had no idea they were that expensive now. My DD starts high school next year, and she won't be getting one at that price. They are a complete waste of money, IMO.

DD did not get one. We discussed it and decided against it. I had one when I was in high school. Never wore it again after high school. DD didn't think she would wear after high school either so we decided to put the money toward a nice ring that she could and probably would wear forever.

That is what my mom did. I have a pretty topaz ring I still wear occasionally.

I would like to recommend walmart.com

We saved quite a bit of money on my DS's class ring. It's a good thing too, because he never really wore it

I paid about $400something for mine, altho i dont wear it often (it actually doesnt fit anymore, it falls off) but i did wear it for quite some time. I actually dont mind that i spend that much on it (about 1997 for 98 grad) and i like when i see it it brings back a lot of memoris, i guess for me it was one of those, i wil only get one chance to do this things, and i spent most of my own money on it (by choice cuz i wanted nicer options on it) and my mom and granddad pitched in.

If and when i have kids, id prob by it for them too if they wanted it.

I guess I'm the mean mom. After I saw the prices, I told DS no. I had one and it went in the drawer after high school. DD hasn't even asked me. We have far more other things to spend money one - like college tuition - that we could be using that money for. DH had a college ring and wore it for a bit after college, then in the drawer it went. Kudos to those that buy one, but for our family, that kind of money for a ring that I know is going to get limited use, is a waste.

I don't remember how much they cost way back when but I do remember my mom saying they were too expensive for something I would only wear through high school. I survived without it!

I worked for Jostens for years, and I just wanted to add some info to this thread. Jostens offered rings in all price ranges & styles. The girls' dinner rings were really quite pretty & could be worn for years. The less expensive metals & stones made just as nice a ring as the real gold & diamonds ones did.

However, some schools decided which styles could be offered in their school. In that case, choices were limited both in design & price.

The other thing is that some schools wanted freshmen to get the rings as that gave 4 yrs of use rather than only a yr or 2.

Since the rings are sold in the school, the salesmen have to abide by the decisions of the school & school committee.

That said, I still have both my class ring, class of 1961, & my mom's, class of 1939. And yes, I do still wear them occasionally when the stone colors go with what I am wearing.

We paid probably around 200.00 2 years ago for our daughters ring. From what I have heard, some kids have them, some don't. At her school, no one compares rings, it is just not a big deal. By the way, she doesn't wear it now, she is a senior, and she is too 'grown up' for High School rings:rotfl: . I LOVE the idea that Feralpeg had, I wish I had thought of that!

I will say, that most people I have spoken with agreed that the H.S. class ring gets shoved to the back of the drawer pretty quick, but the COLLEGE ring? Some men use it as their wedding band! I know of several. My father gave his first college ring to my (then) future SIL as a surprise for my brother on their wedding day, it had a Ruby surrounded by diamonds. It meant SO much to him. My Dad at 60 something years old, promptly went out and bought himself another college class ring. He is now 81, and it is his ONLY piece of jewelry that he has worn as long as I have known him.

I didn't get a class ring.
I felt a little embarrassed that I didn't have one, for awhile.

Then I went away to college and on one one of my first days in the dorm I saw people getting ridiculed because they were wearing their HIGH SCHOOL rings at COLLEGE. :rotfl:
Most everybody's ring got tossed in a drawer pretty quickly after high school graduation, just like my parents had told me would happen.

We paid in the $450 range for my son's Sr. ring 2 years ago. I made him buy the best one 14K gold and it is a beautiful ring and he ha worn it as a good piece of jewlery every day since then. He will definately get a college ring in two years when the time come.

My youngest the best ring we could buy was 10k GOLD (the school picked) we did order the ring which was about $350 and it looks like junk jewlery; not worn more then once or twice and that one we will exchange when the time comes to buy a good college ring.

DD didn't want one. DS has a multitude of nice but not TOO expensive rings to choose from sitting around in my jewelry box that he can give to his "steady" girlfriend, when he has one.

Youngest DS, who is a sophmore and STILL growing;) , brought home information for class rings Friday.
I was tied up with getting the new computer up and running so I just now opened the envelope to read the information.
The rings are, on an average, $500!
I don't think I want to order one for that price. Will he be a social outcast if I don't?:scared:
Would you pay that price for a high school ring?

TC:cool1:

At my HS class rings were kind of dorky...so I never got one..I just really didn't care. We didn't hang our tassels in our rear-view mirrors or anything either. Give him the $500....let him decide what to do with it...

exactly- they are cool for the couple of months before college...then quickly become dorky.... like a "letterman" jacket.... totally lame in college...

They are pretty high now - when the time comes for DS and DD to get one we will take a look around at Walmart and other stores besides the school sponsered seller and I like the idea of spending the money on another ring that they can wear forever so I might offer that too.

I tell you though -I about fell over when DS came home with a packet for a Middle School class ring last year in 7th grade!!! There was no way I was ordering him a middle school class ring. Their main selling point was "You can trade it in towards your High School class ring" I couldn't believe they were trying to sell class rings to middle schoolers and I couldn't believe the number of parents who actually bought them for their kids!!

Holy Moly! That is TOO funny! I'm still totally against middle schools having a 'graduation'!:sad2:

I know - isn't it just crazy!! I was speechless for a few moments when he handed me the packet - then I just laughed and said No way:rotfl2: He laughed too because he knew there was no way he was getting a middle school ring.

I 'm with Peggy on this. Who wears their high school ring after high school? I'm not against spending money on some nice bling, but for heavens sake get something that you can enjoy forever.
