Uber has quietly added a $4 surcharge for pickups at Universal Orlando theme parks.

The new fees that went into effect Oct. 21 will pay for a deal between Universal and Uber to improve the ride-sharing experience, Uber spokesman Javier Correoso said.

Universal is charging Uber, which has passed down the fee to the customer, Correoso said.

Universal did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

I wonder how this will impact Lyft. As competitive as Ride Share I see Lyft getting the raw end on this deal or being forced to pay to play.

I wonder if this also applies to regular taxi service and Lyft. If not, then I'd vote with my wallet.

Of course it will.
Oh, ok. I just re-read it. Universal is charging Uber, so ya Disney will do the same. Uggggghhhhhhhhh. That could really add on the amount needed to budget if one was to plan to use Uber a lot.

Could this trickle down to Disney properties?
Disney has already updating the ride share areas at DHS & AK, and I think Epcot. If they were going to do this with Uber/Lyft/Taxis they probably would have done it by now. I think they are going to need to do something for MK though, I imagine the impact on CR & BLT will force their hands at some point. I just don't see Disney jumping on the bandwagon, look how well the Fuel Rod charge went. Gave Disney a black eye and they don't own the product.

it said something about they are building a uber lounge and this is how they are funding it.. it amazing that there is no end to the fees these parks add to the out of town guest .. im going with lyft or Itrolly anyways

Under Florida law, pickup fees may be charged in certain situations but they can't be any more than taxis are charged -- so I would assume Universal is charging Lyft and taxis as well.

Universal is the entity making the $4; Uber is just collecting it for them.

And I doubt seriously if US is building an "Uber lounge." I've never heard of an Uber lounge anywhere, and it would be a colossal waste of time and money. People ordering Uber dont' want a lounge -- they want a ride.

The issue to me is not so much that it's $4, but that it's $4 AND the new location drops/pick ups in the middle of nowhere.
I've always driven my own car to US, so I don't know anything about rideshare pickups.

But from what I've read on social media, a lot of Orlando Uber drivers HATE pickups at US. Some of them actually go offline if they have a ride TO US to avoid getting a ride picking up at US.

With the agreement in place between Disney and Lyft I bet they don't implement a pickup fee

Universal's rideshare pick up/drop off is too far a walk and sends you through the huge lines at security before City Walk. We do not ever use it. We go to a hotel instead (and now, no fee there). Much shorter/easier walk than from the other end of City Walk.

For now no. I just did a test and put in Universal as a pick up and no $4 fee with Lyft. There is one with Uber.
Sounds like this move puts Uber at a competitive disadvantage. :drive:

I hope you are right. I mean, if/when the agreement is up, do you think they might do it then?

Apparently Uber and Universal agreed to this, and I don't think Uber would have agreed if there were not some advantage to them. Uber may be wild and crazy, but they're not stupid (usually).

I think we'll have to wait and see what actually happens.

The Uber “lounge” is an air conditioned waiting area with seats that they are supposedly putting on the top floor of the parking garage somewhere. Maybe there is a big backlog of ride pickups at Universal and it’s causing other traffic issues? But it’s definitely going to be a real thing.

The link says the pick-up area is on the top floor of the garage, which means it's probably out in the open. Lyft riders will have to wait out in the sun, rain, cold, heat, whatever; while Uber riders can relax in comfort in their exclusive lounge.
