No, I'm not talking about their "proper" names. I'm talking nick names.

As I've said previously, I'm going to become a first time grandfather later this year. DD & DSiL told us at Christmas. They immediately asked DW & I what we want to be called. DW said she wants to be called "Nana". I didn't have an answer, and said I have to think about it. Six weeks later and I still don't have an answer. My grandfathers were called Zayde (paternal) and Pop-pop (maternal). Our kids called my dad Zayde also and DW's dad Papaw.

I've considered all three (my Dad passed away almost nine years ago), but nothing jumps at me. Maybe for one, I still don't feel old enough to be a grandparent (definitely am).

What and how did your grandfathers (whether you or your kids) get called?

I called both of mine grandpa, my kids did the same with their one.

For my daughter, she has 3 grandmothers and 3 grandfathers (I've got stepparents on my side), but because there were other grandkids born before her, the names they went by were already set:

My mother and stepdad: Graga and Papa
My father and stepmother: Grandpa and Grandma

My mother in-law and father in-law don't have any other grandkids and chose the names they'd like to be called: Nana and Pop.

My mother-in-law is Grammy; her husband was Grandpa.

My mother, who didn't think she could be Grammy too, chose "Grandy." Dad was "Pop-pop."

My husband and I are Grandma and Granddad/Grandpa. Solely because it's too damn hard to find specialty name cards. I was able to find some Pop-pop, but it was a really stupid challenge every year that I swore I'd never do to our kids.

What do you mean "find specialty name cards"? Are you referring to birthday cards? I don't remember stressing over that and we didn't have "typical" grandparent names.

Grandpa and Papa were mine.

You could start with grandpa and see where it goes from there. I ended up nicknaming one of my grandmas when I started taking because her name was too much for me- nickname stuck for all 6 grandkids to come 🤣

Fathers parents were nana and grampy
Mothers parents were papa and lovey.

I was one of the younger grandchildren but I hear the older kids named them, they didn’t pick their names.

We have / had in our family:

Pawcaw
Pappy Fred
Grandpa
Daddy Bill (the grandkids called grandpa the same thing that their parents did)

For the ladies it has been Mimi, Nana, Grandma, Molly (wanted her first name)

@sam_gordon Congrats on soon becoming a grandfather! So I didn’t have any grandfathers, but for one of my kid’s grandpa everyone calls him “popee”. My other kid calls her grandpa…..just “grandpa”.

Our families are all in different time zones from us, so everything is shipped or mailed. My mother doesn't WANT a card that says "grandmother" or "grandma." She WANTS a card that says Grandy.

Actually, she's mellowed since the kids are grown -- she's happy to get anything. It's just a quirk or my disfunctional family.

My first grandbaby, now 2, was the first on both sides. It is my son's child so I gave preference first to DIL mom and dad, who wanted the traditional gramma and grampa. I chose Nana. I wanted it Disney themed and so Nana from Peter Pan it is. Everyone in my family thinks it sounds "old". Well, I'm not a very young grandmother so there's that lol. The formal name is NanaB. My grand nieces and nephews have always called me Auntie B. (and their other aunties Auntie A, Auntie O, etc). In my family we had Mama and Papa (as grandparents) although two of the 7 grandchildren called her Gram, Gigi (great grandmother), Meme (grandmother), Nana (grandmother) and Lala (grandmother).

Pops, Poppop, Thor are 3 grandfather names of 50 something year old grandfathers I know.

never knew my paternal grandfather.
Maternal one was Papa, all grand kids called him that and I was not the oldest so the oldest one chose it.

My grand kids call us Nana and Papa, the same as I called my grandparents

My four grandchildren call me Papa. My two children also called my father and father in law Papa. I like it a lot better than Grampy or Grandpa.
