???

I just counted - our district is scheduled for exactly 170 days in school.

DO they have longer days??? I thought all across the country the requirement was 180 days. The only way they cold get away with less days would be if the school day was longer.

We start school the first week of August. We get Labor Day off, a couple of days in October for Fall Break. We do not get Veterans Day oof which is another reason why we get this whole week off. Then we go to school for 3 weeks and have about two weeks off. In January we get MLK off, and February we get another couple of days. Spring Break we get a week off in the last week of March or 1st week of April. Our last day will be right around Memorial Day.

At the district I work in the kids have off Wednesday-Friday, but Wednesday are parent-teacher conferences. A lot of districts around us have scheduled conferences like that, even starting Monday (half day for kids).

Maybe 10 of those days are in-service days for teachers. Those count as school days, right?

They probably don't count towards the number of school days, at least in my dad's school district they wouldn't. He has a calander with dates when the students attend classes and when the teachers have in services. The teachers have at least 10 extra days without the children.

It's interesting to see how long and varied the length of school breaks are around the country.

My kids have a half day Wednesday and are off Thurs.and Fri. My older son has a fever so I might just send my youngest tomorrow and keep both home on Wednesday. I drive them to school a half hour each way and it would be kind of dumb to drive them Wednesday to just come back 3 and a half hours later.

Wed-Fri here.
My niece has Thurs-Mon off in Ohio.

The Wed-Fri makes more sense as Wed and Sun are the big travel days.

the reason that some schools have all week off now is that alot of people traveled anyway and took their kids out of school. That made the attendance at the school bad and they would lose money, so now they just give them the whole week off. Makes sense to me.

That's exactly why my school district gives the whole week off. Wednesday had already been a day off for a long time here.

Nope. The 180 school days are days the kids must be in school. I thnk 1/2 days count though. As lunchroom manager I work 190 days and I think the teachers are at around that amount also.

DD has a half day tomorrow and is off Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday.

I teach kindergarten in another district and we have a half day on Wednesday and go back to school on Tuesday as well.

My girls in public school have had from last Thursday til the Monday after Thanksgiving off. WOOHOO. I am a SAHM who is bored out of my skull and just having them home cheers me up. My son in private has a half day on Wednesday and then the standard 4 days off. My husbands schedule just happened to have him off Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This is one happy mama. I am not much for the holidays. In fact I am freaking out just thinking of sitting at the Thanksgiving table (don't ask) but having my kids home more then makes up for it.

We get off Wed-Fri!

Yay for being a teacher!

I love being a teacher too this time a year.

We have half days Monday and Tuesday for conferences, Wednesday is just a half day and then we're off Thursday and Friday.

DD gets Thursday and Friday and thats it. Many school in the area have Wednesday off as well. Some even have the entire week. DD's school is very strict and there is no way they would give more days off than needed. If fact, I'm sure they would try to get them to go on Friday if they thought they could get enough kids to show up.

Are districts allowed to make kids have more than the mandated amount of instructional days? (180 or 190, I forget). I always figured schools were given that amount, and that they voted on the calendar they wanted to follow, that resulted in that number of intructional days. At least that's what our districts around here do, as well as the district my niece+nephew just left, and the one they moved to. I think some districts might give less days off throughout the year, but have shorter school years.

It is the State that mandates how many instructional days there are. I am pretty sure it is 180 all across the country. There might be some allowances for those areas that have snow days and such but the norm is 180 days period. Heck...I even remember way back when I was in 3rd grade they had ti cancel schoolbecause of a heating issue and we had to make up that day on a Saturday!!!

The year we had all those hurricanes (04??) we had to close school three different times within a month and a half. We ah to make up all those days. I believe two of our half days were made into a full day which created one "day" and Christmas break we came back a day early and the days off in Feb was shortened by a day.

There was an exception last year I think when the Governor had all the schools close to try and save gas and we did not have to make that day up but that was only because it was a state issued closure.

BUt yes each county system votes on what they want their calendar to look like but they HAVE to have the 180 school days for the children. Some places start school in September and go until the end of June. Our system starts in the first week of August and goes until the end of May.
