Went out and tried both. Liked both and was offered similar price for either.

I have an 03 Impala that I have owned since brand new. According to Consumer's Report, the Fusion is suppose to be better by far but thought I'd ask you guys.........will be making the decision Monday, hopefully. :)

Neither, i test drove both when i wascar shopping, i ended up buying a 2012 Nisson sentra and ilove that car. Im getting 31.2 mpg around town and got 38 mpg on a recent 700 mile trip through the mountians

I have a 2009 Ford Fussion and love it:thumbsup2would love to trade it for a 2012.

I had a 2010 Fusion and loved it. I planned to get a 2013, but they aren't out yet and I needed to buy a car now because DHs car was totaled. DH got my 2010 and I got a new 2012 Mustang! I love the Mustang, but in a different way than I did my Fusion. I still want a new Fusion, but am enjoying the Mustang.

I'm a Ford fan, but you are comparing 2 different sized cars. The Fusion is comparable to the Malibu, not the Impala. The Impala is comparable to a Taurus.
My in laws have an 2003 Impala and, other than the a/c compressor going out, it has been a good car. While they only have 30,000 miles on it, they live in Texas where the a/c is on almost year round.

Despite being a Ford man, I'd say either is a good choice. Although I might be inclined to get a Caprice instead......the new ones look like the Impala from the rear, but are rear wheel drive and have a 6 liter Corvette V8. Most are being sold to police departments, but a few are making it into private hands.

Both cars are being replaced this summer, and neither is the best in its class by any means. Get a Passat or Sonata. More bang for the buck and higher quality vehicles. And if "made in the USA" is important to you, keep in mind the Passat and Sonata are American built; the Fusion and Impala are imported.

As a GM guy, I would not recommend the current Impala. 2012 Malibu vs. 2012 Fusion would be a more direct comparison & would also be a much tougher choice. I'd probably go Malibu. Both Malibu & Fusion are at the end of their production runs with all-new 2013's coming out, so there "should" be deals to be had out there. The Impala hasn't been updated in MANY years, although the 3.6 V6 is finally an option.

Whatever you choose try to get mostly American made. Good luck and enjoy your new car.

Buy the Ford, but if you can wait a few months, the 2013 will be out.

I would respectfully point out that Volkswagen has about the lowest quaility ratings of any brand sold in the U.S.

A Passat, really? I wouldn't say they are higher quality at all, and this comes from a guy who has owned European, American and Japanese vehicles. From a pure maitenance and quality perspective, European is definately where to go. If you want image, style and performance, sure, European cars are great.

Wait until the new Fusion comes out this fall. The current one is looking kinda tired at this point.

Definitely avoid the Impala. They are so unbelievably outdated, it's not even funny. If you want to look at something more comparable to the Fusion while still being American made, take a look at the 2013 Chevy Malibu. It was just redesigned a few months ago.

2013 Fusion looking pretty good to me.

By J.D. Power - a for profit marketing company that doesn't use proper control variables in their useless quality surveys.

I'll stick by what I said: GM especially is junk. Ford is good quality, but that's because Ford Europe has essentially taken over designing and engineering Ford's high volume sedans/hatchbacks.

Sorry, but you are really bucking the real-world trend. The general concensus on most European brands is that they drive great & seem to be well made INITIALLY, but that lots & lots of every expensive repairs are in your future unless you're leasing them or otherwise getting rid of them before they hit 50,000 miles (again, Mercedes seems to be the exception here). GM has developed a reputation for poor fit & finish (greatly improved in recent years) and so-so performance that puts people off initially, but their cars are generally quite durable & inexpensive to maintain. In other words, a Chevy may be more likely to have squeaks & rattles, but a Volkswagon is more likely to leave you stranded on the side of the road.
