I have driven Skagway to Fairbanks many times on my own. Thinking about it, it probably isn't nearly as far as your driving. I could make it in 12 hours, once in a blue moon in 10. I am like my dad and do not stop except for gas.

Down here the farthest I have driven on my own was Chandler (AZ) to Los Angeles. I personally do not like driving on my own in places I do not know well.

When I was about 23, I drove from Bath, Maine to Cleveland, Ohio with three kids under 5 years of age. Not alone, but was the only grown-up. I don't know how far it was, but it took about 24 hours to do it and I drove straight through.

I was too tired and should have stopped, but couldn't afford it. It wasn't safe and I'm lucky we didn't have an accident. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

If you have a reliable car and can stop to sleep, you should be fine, though!!!! Don't worry, you can do it!

I've done it from South Florida to NJ. I stayed in a hotel along 1 -95 along the way. I was fine. I've also driven about 12 hours with 3 young kids alone. It's much easier to travel without the kids.

I've taken frequent long trips alone. I go to Cape Hatteras at least once a year, around ten hours. I've driven to see my sis in Chicago, 150-17hrs. You can do this. You are more prepped then I am.

I drove from Atlanta to Biloxi, MS, which took me about 6 hours alone. At first it was a little odd, but then that gave way to boredom, LOL. You'll be fine as long as you stop to sleep so you don't get overly tired.

I drove from Phoenix AZ to North Dakota a few months ago. It was not the most fun time I've ever had, and it took me 4 days instead of 3, but I really wanted my car for the summer.
You can do it.
Is there anyone who'd drive with you if you paid for their return flight? That may be something to look in to.

Ive done that road more times than I care to count too ( and the Skagway to Dawson route) but I didnt drive it thankfully.
Rachel knows this poem but for those of you who havent driven it there is a poem about Alaska Highway

"Winding in and winding out

was going to hell or coming out"



Personally Ive done Spokane to Seattle ( 5 hours) and Spokane to Calgary. ( about 9 hours) Ive done Seattle/Spokane/San Fransisco but some of that was with a friend so I guess it doesnt count.

If the chance arose, I would pretty much drive how ever far I needed. I have done 10 hours each way with the kids/no DH several times but I suppose that doesn't really count, right?

Chattanooga, TN to New York City. Take your time and make lots of stops to stretch. I had LOTS of music to keep my mind off of the mind numbing drive, too!

I've only driven from Houston, to Destin, Florida when I moved there. And back again, when I moved back to Houston.

I'm a chicken when it comes to that.

Driven, probably Dallas to Mtn Home ID (40 miles SE of Boise). But I have traveled by myself overseas twice. One the the Phillipines, and once to Saudi.

Also, drove from ID to FL, but new DH (we had been married 5 months) was in another car and cats with me.

what about the auto train? you get on in pennsylvania (i think) and get off in sanford florida. i personally don't like driving far distances alone, i'm not nervous about it, i just get bored!

i'm sure as prepared as you are that everything will be fine!

I agree not to take the bypasses around Baltimore. Stay on 95 straight through. I find it to be quick and simple. Well...quick as long as you don't hit rush hour!

I have driven numerous long distance trips by myself or with young kids and dogs. I agree...it is easier without the kids!


With so much leeway on the time, I would plan days and distances around some sights you may want to see along the way. It will take you longer but you will have some great memories.

I have heard(not been through in a bit) that South of the Border is no longer a place to stop for the night. Just a heads up on that one!

Have a great trip. I am always nervous before a trip( I am driving 20 hours from TX to FL next week with 2 kids) but once I am on the road I am fine. Then I get bored! It is worth it though, when you get there.

I made the drive from Jacksonville, FL to St. Louis, MO and back quite a few times by myself. I LOVED it!!! (But I also LOVE to drive)

I love the freedom of travelling bt car. The being alone part of it was great for me because I could stop when I felt like it. Don't get me wrong, I also love a good road trip with friends. But the time alone for me on these trips was always therapeutic. I didn't feel like I had to entertain anyone else, just me, my thoughts, and the open road! (Oh, and you can sing along to the music as loud as you want, and no one will make fun of you!)

Just be sure you have a good map and really good directions! You'll be fine!
