But...the DVC ads all say you can go anywhere, not just disney!!!![]()
You could go anywhere, but honestly, going to a DVC resort is the best value for the cost of the DVC purchase. That's why we bought enough points to go for 10 nights every other year, staying in a 1-bedroom. Every other year is perfect for us, because we want to go continuously with our sons, but not every single year or multiple times a year. We still like to do other types of vacations as well, but Disney is the one place we could keep going to. And if we ever change our minds, we could go every year for 10 nights in a studio as well. Doubt that would happen though. We feel (at least right now) that the DVC was one of the smartest purchases we ever made, but everyone feels differently about it. It's definitely not for everyone.
Thankfully I am really frugal, so we don't splurge much. We have made 1 or 2 ridiculously expensive purchases, but then we use them to the hilt. Still the amount of money spent makes me wince - like our almost $5K mattress - but we love, love, love it, and it has a 30 year warrenty so if we get 20 years life out of it, it was worth it. Plus, you spend a lot of your life sleeping, so we justified it.
The stupidest one though was when we were first married and signed up for a gym membership for a year and only used it 3 times. However, our current gym membership gets used probably 10 times a week between the 2 of us, and it's been that way for over 2 years, so they aren't always a waste of money!
You're right, you spend so much time sleeping that investing in a good mattress is a very smart thing to do. That is one area you do not want to skimp on.
As far as the gym membership, it works out very well for many people. A friend of mine uses his about 5 times per week, religiously. He even goes in the bad weather unless it is literally impossible. If you use it, I believe it is an extremely wise way to spend your money. It is an investment in good health. I spend more on groceries than many people I know, but I buy all healthy stuff, like lots of fruits and vegetables (I refuse to use canned veggies), leaner cuts of meat, extra virgin olive oil, etc. I just think that it is worth it to spend more on the good stuff since we all feel great when we eat healthy and it is good for us.

I went through 2 years of treatments so I know how you feel. So sorry.
