Your most foolish Purchase

But...the DVC ads all say you can go anywhere, not just disney!!! :lmao:

You could go anywhere, but honestly, going to a DVC resort is the best value for the cost of the DVC purchase. That's why we bought enough points to go for 10 nights every other year, staying in a 1-bedroom. Every other year is perfect for us, because we want to go continuously with our sons, but not every single year or multiple times a year. We still like to do other types of vacations as well, but Disney is the one place we could keep going to. And if we ever change our minds, we could go every year for 10 nights in a studio as well. Doubt that would happen though. We feel (at least right now) that the DVC was one of the smartest purchases we ever made, but everyone feels differently about it. It's definitely not for everyone.

Thankfully I am really frugal, so we don't splurge much. We have made 1 or 2 ridiculously expensive purchases, but then we use them to the hilt. Still the amount of money spent makes me wince - like our almost $5K mattress - but we love, love, love it, and it has a 30 year warrenty so if we get 20 years life out of it, it was worth it. Plus, you spend a lot of your life sleeping, so we justified it.

The stupidest one though was when we were first married and signed up for a gym membership for a year and only used it 3 times. However, our current gym membership gets used probably 10 times a week between the 2 of us, and it's been that way for over 2 years, so they aren't always a waste of money!

You're right, you spend so much time sleeping that investing in a good mattress is a very smart thing to do. That is one area you do not want to skimp on.

As far as the gym membership, it works out very well for many people. A friend of mine uses his about 5 times per week, religiously. He even goes in the bad weather unless it is literally impossible. If you use it, I believe it is an extremely wise way to spend your money. It is an investment in good health. I spend more on groceries than many people I know, but I buy all healthy stuff, like lots of fruits and vegetables (I refuse to use canned veggies), leaner cuts of meat, extra virgin olive oil, etc. I just think that it is worth it to spend more on the good stuff since we all feel great when we eat healthy and it is good for us.

Ms.Tom-Morrow25, that is so funny! Some of ours came all the way from Asia. They were all the sets his parents couldn't buy him when he was young. Now our kids are enjoying them, but I still think it was ridiculous.

I went to grad school to become a counselor for one year. It was a two-year program. I paid $10,000 and took out a $10,000 loan and decided one year in that I didn't want to be a counselor anymore. I was worried about loans and finishing "just because" and many people told me to keep going and just finish. I'm glad I didn't finish and throw out another $20,000. I'm happy in my career and will only go to grad school if an employer pays.

A second IVF cycle after the first one failed....the doctor offered a 1/2 price deal and I was just crazed thinking this time was the time for us. Now 7000.00 in debt (we put it on a credit card) and 2 miscarriages later I'm so sick that I just didn't say NO.

Five Coach bags at one time. They were on sale, and I lost my mind. More than foolish, I'd call a waste, and I learned my lesson but good!!!! It's back to Target for my handbags.

I did that at the outlet near WDW in December. I spent $400. I've used all of them, though.

Does paying rack rate count? :rotfl:

I'm a shopoholic...literally, so most of my purchases are extravagant, but I'm working on it.

 It is hard not to get sucked into that. I understand that hormonal frustration that comes with wanting a baby sooooo badly. My dh & I rode that rollercoaster, but we were lucky that his insurance covered a lot of fertility treatment, so our debt was minimal. Sorry for your losses & glad that you now have a family.

We actually did the IVF just recently....we already had the kiddos we have now, I guess that's why I feel so foolish for spending that kind of money, we had children and were blessed through adoption, so I should have just said NO and ran away LOL Oh well, ya live and learn :)

I have so far been able to avoid the outlet mall. My kids are too young to drag them away from WDW for mom to shop. But now that dd is 10 we may be heading that way soon...

My husband bought a couple thousand dollars worth of old legos on ebay...

Wow, my MIL had all my dh's old lego. Maybe I need to list it on ebay! My Dh's family is all from Norway. He still remembers getting Lego from his grandfather (who traveled frequently) before lego was available in the USA. When is became popular here, and all his friends were asking for it, he already had tons of it! None of his friends believed he had it for years already!

I remember watching an infomerical late night, with my best girlfriend/room-mate.

It was this plunger thing, with a paint roller on the end. You stuck this thing in the paint can, sucked the paint up the plunger (like a giant syringe), attached the roller and VOILA! Easy-Breezy Painting!!!! AT the time, we were in a 2 BR rental, and we thought "That's GREAT! We can paint the place every month!! And paint it back when we move, in a jiffy"

Please keep in mind, we were like 19 - and going through a .....*smoking stage* ifyaknowwhatImean. :rolleyes1 :hippie:

We ordered that stupid thing. It came. We barely remembered ordering it. :confused3

We never used it. I don't even know what happened to it. I think we threw it out.

Ha ha! I actually have one of these down in my basement somewhere. I actually did use it a couple of times, but it was easier to just use a traditional paint roller and pan.

:sad1: I went through 2 years of treatments so I know how you feel. So sorry.

OMG! I love this thread! I too spent too much on that nail stuff at the mall kiosk. My nails are horrible and ridgy. . .but you can get that buffer thing at the drug store for a few dollars and the special lotion. . .is just lotion! Ugh!

The worst was when I was 19. . .I went to get my hair cut and wound up with a years worth of tanning. :confused3 I went at first but after a little while . . eh. It's in with the long term gym membership category.

I hope my next isn't this week. I have been shopping for a car for the last two weeks. . .drove several and decided on a practical Taurus in my price range (didn't want to finance). BUT I went to a car auction with my mom on a whim and ended up buying a repo 2004 Hyundai Elantra. .. dang near sight unseen. I've never driven it. . but I pick it up tomorrow.. .wish me luck!

ETA. .. however the worst was the $4000 I spent on bailing my ex-husband out of jail and the various attorneys fees and court costs. What the heck was I thinking??????!!!!!!

We had a Hyundai Sonata a for a long time and LOVED it. It was a great car until my husband totaled it. We had to replace it with a used car that was in our very tiny budget at the time. We never regreted buying that car, it was very comfortable and reliable. I don't think you will be sorry.

Dodge Grand Caravan. Never again.

I should have paid the $900 to replace the front seat of my GMC Safari. We loved that van. :(

I got my last tag from a similar thread.

Mine was 20 years ago and I spent $75 for a suede frog that was standing on her back legs, wearing a dress, pushing a wicker baby buggy with little suede pollywogs in it. My SIL was shopping with me and went on and on about it being the cutest thing she'd ever seen so I bought the darn thing.

It was hideous, fairly large, and my house is very formal and clutter free. This thing was very "country". It was hideous and I tried to put it somewhere that was not obvious but my husband made sure to point it out to all guests. I finally had to lose it.

Im sorry but the thought of this is cracking me up! My mom loves frogs and collects little glass ones but I think yours takes it!!! Do you happen to have a pic? :goodvibes

Hey if it makes you feel any better I bought this last Christmas for myself and we don't even drink coffee at all. We use if for tea (stupid) and hot cocoa (also stupid). I bought it because I was having a Christmas ladies brunch and the friend that was supposed to make the coffee got sick, I seriously can't make coffee. I guess I could but I can't taste it to see if it is any good. To me they are all bad. So I bought the Keurig and told everybody to fix their own coffee. I also bought boxes and boxes of those stupid k-cups which are still sitting downstairs.

Don't you feel better now? :rotfl:

Caigslist it!!!!

Yes! My husband bought all the sets his mom didn't get for him when he was younger. He even bought a $60 "gold" plated C3PO Star Wars lego guy. Sigh. . .gotta love 'em!!
