Your most foolish Purchase

But...the DVC ads all say you can go anywhere, not just disney!!! :lmao:

Most foolish........A hot tub! geezus what were we thinking?!?!?!

Second foolish, The PS2 when the ps3 was coming out. we NEVER play it! it was used 2 times!!!!

Third foolish, the ultra expensive earth dog collar.

Fourth foolish, all the flippin littlest pet shop stuff for the niece that just sits unboxed, and unplayed with at the bottom of her closet!

And unless i get my butt camping this weekend, i am going to add pop up camper to the list!

Picture it...we were young, newlyweds, first time home owners...got suckered into United Consumers Club (now DirectBuy). We never purchased anything there...one time I bought something on behalf of a co-worker. Talk about money wasted!!!! Apprently it worked out for some people, if you are into the more high-end stuff, but the shipping they charge really negates any 'savings' you are supposedly getting; and its mostly catalog shopping, which is fine for somethings...but big ticket items, i perfer to see it up close, try it out, etc. before buying....

oh, and there are plenty of other purchases...i just have blocked them out of my memory for now!!

We have gone to Hawaii lots of times using our DVC points and to Lake Tahoe once. I still love my DVC even after all of these years.

I have bought too many items from informercials or the different shopping networks that were literally junk, or things I didn't need. It's a funny thing though, I only watch the different shopping networks when I am sick and in bed. Go figure.

Great Thread. I need a good laugh this morning!!!

This purchase is my husband's. I went away for 2 weeks for training for work and when I came home their was a Bowflex sitting in my basement. Of course it has never been used and collecting dust. That was a total waste of money and I remind him of that on a monthly basis :)

Keep it around for a couple of years and if your 10 year old is like mine he will use it. :thumbsup2 I had a generic version of the bow flex that sat around till DS started getting body concious and now he uses it.

I wish I could add that to my list...we want a tent trailer so bad, just can't find any decent used ones....they are so expensive new! Trade you! :lmao:

My 10 year old DS is all of a sudden body conscious. I thought it was premature, but apparently not. :confused3 They grow up too fast now a days. :sad1:

Thankfully I am really frugal, so we don't splurge much. We have made 1 or 2 ridiculously expensive purchases, but then we use them to the hilt. Still the amount of money spent makes me wince - like our almost $5K mattress - but we love, love, love it, and it has a 30 year warrenty so if we get 20 years life out of it, it was worth it. Plus, you spend a lot of your life sleeping, so we justified it.

The stupidest one though was when we were first married and signed up for a gym membership for a year and only used it 3 times. However, our current gym membership gets used probably 10 times a week between the 2 of us, and it's been that way for over 2 years, so they aren't always a waste of money!

Mine was from on of the kiosk stands at our mall. I was supposed to smooth your nails with a buffing block and "special serum". Turns out I could have bought the same stuff at any drugstore for $30 less and still get the same result. I was so mad at myself.

Yeah but if you didn't buy it you would have had to go around looking funky with one shiny nail that blinds anyone looking at it. :lmao:

One would be a full set of Calphalon pots and pans---really disliked everything about these and they were SO expensive.:headache:

The second would be a boat. Considering that 2 out of the 4 of us don't like boats at all and wouldn't go on and DH works a lot of hours and rarely went out on it! But the good thing that came out of that "foolish" purchase is that we sold the boat and bought DVC and have never been happy with any purchase:cheer2:

my most foolish purchase was also my most favorite.. my limited edition chanel purse.:lovestruc

I LOVE my Keurig :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc

my most foolish- I cringe just admitting it-was also an infomercial buy. I forget the exact name but it involved placing a tiny ad in the paper and then getting richer than your wildest dreams! Oh brother :rotfl2:

In my defense:
1. I was only 20.
2. I learned my lesson- have never since succumbed to infomercial mania :thumbsup2

Runner-up:
Buying a dog sight unseen. She was $600 and mentally unstable. I spent a fortune on medications to help control it (didn't work) and even a consultation with a specialist. She would walk ina circle around the coffee table for hours. She would lunge at me and bite my breasts and rip apart my shirts. I was afraid in my own home. Finally, after exhausting all other avenues, I had to bring her to the SPCA and seal her fate. I had to tell the truth as I didnt want her mutilating a child or something.

OMG! I love this thread! I too spent too much on that nail stuff at the mall kiosk. My nails are horrible and ridgy. . .but you can get that buffer thing at the drug store for a few dollars and the special lotion. . .is just lotion! Ugh!

The worst was when I was 19. . .I went to get my hair cut and wound up with a years worth of tanning. :confused3 I went at first but after a little while . . eh. It's in with the long term gym membership category.

I hope my next isn't this week. I have been shopping for a car for the last two weeks. . .drove several and decided on a practical Taurus in my price range (didn't want to finance). BUT I went to a car auction with my mom on a whim and ended up buying a repo 2004 Hyundai Elantra. .. dang near sight unseen. I've never driven it. . but I pick it up tomorrow.. .wish me luck!

ETA. .. however the worst was the $4000 I spent on bailing my ex-husband out of jail and the various attorneys fees and court costs. What the heck was I thinking??????!!!!!!

Law school. Altho, as a previous pp mentioned, it is how I met my dh. And his answer would be, yup, you guessed it, law school also. Now, he's a teacher and I'm a SAH mom. As Cher would say, "if I could turn back time"............:rotfl:

Buying a 'top of the line' treadmill back in '99....used it maybe 2 dozen times. Husband was always bringing it up. $1600! I almost sold it this summer but still thought 'maybe I'll use it'. LOL. Now it's on the fritz.....could have gotten $300!

Joining the gym took a long time because hubby would always mention the treadmill. But that has been the best investment! Joined back in 2003.

I started with 3 months membership to make sure. Never looked back. I'm obviously meant for a group work out environment. I wish I had figured that out sooner.

I did spend $1200 on my dog but he is my favorite splurge. You'll have a dog 12-15 years. I did tons of research and learned about the puppy mills, etc. Bought from a reputable breeder and felt good abou that. It was my debt free reward.

OH yes....UCC/Direct Buy.....I don't want to talk about that one! LOL. We still pay the annual $200 for Direct Buy because hubby is convinced that some day we'll need to buy x or y. OY!

Hands Down - Hot Tub! Bought for my DH 50th Birthday. Whenever we are on vacation he is missing in action and the kids know to go check out the hot tubs. Get one in the backyard and has been used a few times a month, when it is not broken. Actually getting a brand new one as the shell is cracking and it is still under warrenty. I am thinking of selling the new one before we even use it!
Everytime I look at that thing I think of the updated bathroom I could of had instead!

Foolish purchase? The Ford Contour. God that car was a piece of junk. I managed to keep it for 6 years, hating it all the while. I'll never buy a Ford again. Even the lady at the Ford repair shop said it was commonly called the Ford craptour and the Mercury mistake (mistique was the mercury version).

Mine? DH's private school loan. Ugh. What a headache. We never should have gotten it.

Five Coach bags at one time. They were on sale, and I lost my mind. More than foolish, I'd call a waste, and I learned my lesson but good!!!! It's back to Target for my handbags.
