Your most foolish Purchase

Two things come to mind, but I'm sure there are more I am just blocking out! :lmao:

1. A 1993 Chevy Corsica. I bought this in 1997, when I was 20. It was the first car I owned myself. I bought it because it was the same price as the 1991 Nissan Sentra, but it was newer, a 1993 instead! A week later I had 3 flat tires because the tires were so old and terrible (NOT because I ran over a nail or anything). Days after that I had the replace the alternator. I had numerous problems and spent so much money on that car over the 2 years I had it then I finally sold it (for a low price of course). And I had a mechanic check it out BEFORE I bought it!

2. A $400 gym membership for one year. I know that a gym membership seems like a smart way to spend your money, on your health. I went 3 times the first week of the membership, got frustrated having to work their aerobic class schedule into mine, and hated the machines. I stopped going and let the membership run out. BUT...there is a silver lining to this cloud. It led to one of the smartest ways I ever spent money...buying workout DVDs. When I was 25 I decided to get into shape and eat healthier (a year and a half after buying that gym membership I never used). I started out with Tae-bo (which I had for 3 years and had never used before), loved it, and kept on expanding my workout collection over the years. I now own 30 workout DVDs that I rotate so I don't get bored. This is a collection I have expanded on over the course of 7 years now. I paid for each workout ONE TIME, and have them forever and still enjoy them. Best of all I am healthier than I have ever been in my life and I love working out...it quickly became a hobby for me once I realized what I enjoy doing most and what works for me. I love it that even if there is a blizzard I have no excuses! I am right there working out in my living room whereas if I still had a gym membership it would be a perfect opportunity to use the excuse "Oh well, can't drive in a blizzard!"

Ped egg - that thing makes my feet worse.

Fake Pandora bracelet off of ebay

Used car - Aurora that was a piece of junk.

Too many clothes to even mention because they were on sale.

An expensive, large dollhouse for my DD7 when she was only 2 or 3 and wasn't even interested in dolls at the time (and this was in a small 1 bedroom apt) She ended up maybe playing with it less than 5x and I ended up selling it for maybe 1/3 of the price a few years later.

Lots of dolls for my DD when she was a toddler. We ended up selling and giving most of them away because she wasn't interested in dolls until about a year ago.

Ridiculous amounts of digital scrapbooking kits 2 years ago when I was first getting into digiscrapping. Haven't used more than maybe 10% of them. I'm still into digiscrapping now but I'm a lot more discriminating in what I buy.

"planned" a trip (kind of got talked into it by our travel agent) to williamsburg (that i knew we couldnt afford at the time). bought the plane tickets (for $400 dollars) and then cancelled the trip because we came to our senses...the tickets were non-refundable :sad2: IDIOT!

Mine would have to be the $5400 boat for the DH... he's now an ex and so is the boat!!! I miss the boat more!!!:rotfl2:

:headache:
I just purchased a Keurig coffe maker on impulse this weekend. We do drink coffe and tea, but my $29.99 coffe maker was just fine...
I feel so foolish :o:rolleyes2

I LOVE my Keurig! :lovestruc The thing is amazing. Even DH uses it to make coffee and he supposedly doens't like coffee.

Worst thing I ever bought though was one of those infomercial veggie choppers. I never used it.

Mine would definitely be the $722 Louis Vuitton bag. . . I bought it on an impulse and had such bad buyers remorse it woke me up in the middle of the night!! Needless to say, it went back to the store!! I have many, many more foolish purchases that never made it back to the store though. . .probably still sitting in my closet!

I remember watching an infomerical late night, with my best girlfriend/room-mate.

It was this plunger thing, with a paint roller on the end. You stuck this thing in the paint can, sucked the paint up the plunger (like a giant syringe), attached the roller and VOILA! Easy-Breezy Painting!!!! AT the time, we were in a 2 BR rental, and we thought "That's GREAT! We can paint the place every month!! And paint it back when we move, in a jiffy"

Please keep in mind, we were like 19 - and going through a .....*smoking stage* ifyaknowwhatImean. :rolleyes1 :hippie:

We ordered that stupid thing. It came. We barely remembered ordering it. :confused3

We never used it. I don't even know what happened to it. I think we threw it out.

I had that! Mine was called the "Paint Mate". It was actually very useful. I painted many a room with it. In fact I think I just threw mine away because something broke on it last year...but I've had it almost 20 years...so it was a pretty good deal for me:laughing:

Martial-arts classes for the kids. Did the 2-week introductory classes, and they loved them. DW and kids begged me to sign them up for more classes--in fact, they were literally crying. So I could've signed them up for the 1-year contract, or the 3-year contract. Like an idiot, I signed the 3-year contract. They got tired of it after about 15 months, but we were committed and the guy who ran the studio wouldn't let us out early.

Lesson learned for me: no more long-term contracts, especially ones entered into on emotion.

I got my last tag from a similar thread.

Mine was 20 years ago and I spent $75 for a suede frog that was standing on her back legs, wearing a dress, pushing a wicker baby buggy with little suede pollywogs in it. My SIL was shopping with me and went on and on about it being the cutest thing she'd ever seen so I bought the darn thing.

It was hideous, fairly large, and my house is very formal and clutter free. This thing was very "country". It was hideous and I tried to put it somewhere that was not obvious but my husband made sure to point it out to all guests. I finally had to lose it.

My car- A Jaguar- which I love, but the maintenance is insane!!! My headlights broke and it was $1500 for new ones. If the engine blows, it's somewhere around $10,000 to fix. Needless to say, we are getting rid of it before the warranty runs out.

Lets see. Sham-wow it works but I can buy a shammy at wal mart for 10 bucks. Pedi Paws I have Basset Hounds and their nails are too thick to use it. Fluidity Ballet Beam, wife was a dancer for 15 years and promised that she would use it, then did it once and thought it was too much of a hassle. Norditrak Eliptical machine, bought this because I love walking and since I live in PA it is too cold to walk from November to March, but now it is a hanger for my clothes. Worx GT string trimmer, mine died and needed a new one, but this just sucked, battery lasted 20 minutes and took 2 hours to charge and I have an acre of land so needed something that lasted much longer. Finally fishing lures that promised that the fish would just jump into the boat. With that being said.

I am selling Sham WoW for 9.99
Pedi Paws for 9.99
Fluidity for 99.99
Norditrak 599.99
Worx GT 29.99
Fishing Lures 9.99

Just kidding!

Used car - Aurora that was a piece of junk.

I had to jump in when I saw this. :goodvibes In 1998, we bought the most beautiful 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora - pearl white, sunroof, loaded. Got lots of looks. In less than 3 years, we put $8,000. worth of work into it . . . and it limped in to the dealership with the engine getting ready to blow - when I traded it.

Back in 2004, it sounded like a great idea! Lots of good family and friends time at the beach, keep all our stuff down there, rent it to offset the monster mortgage, then someday sell it at a profit, what could go wrong??

EVERYTHING! Now, in 2009, we are tired of going to the same place all the time, renters break everything in their path and then call because things are damaged, we go on vacation and do home maintenance, even if we could sell it, we would get 1/2 of what we paid for it. I'd love to get rid of it, not have to budget for it, and move on.

Anyone want to buy an overpriced house on the Florida Panhandle???

Too many to list. I think back at how much worthless, useless, needless stuff we have bought and realize we would've had a lot to put towards retirement had we not bought all this stuff. We're still getting rid of stuff!

I feel so foolish :o:rolleyes2

Hey if it makes you feel any better I bought this last Christmas for myself and we don't even drink coffee at all. We use if for tea (stupid) and hot cocoa (also stupid). I bought it because I was having a Christmas ladies brunch and the friend that was supposed to make the coffee got sick, I seriously can't make coffee. I guess I could but I can't taste it to see if it is any good. To me they are all bad. So I bought the Keurig and told everybody to fix their own coffee. I also bought boxes and boxes of those stupid k-cups which are still sitting downstairs.

Don't you feel better now? :rotfl:

I have wasted a ton of money on stuff, especially toys and clothes for my kids.

But the two that come to mind right away are our DVC and a Bombay chest of drawers.

I do love the space our DVC gives us and because we pay for it throughout the year we don't have to add it into what our trip costs us, but now we feel like we HAVE to go to Disney every year and so that doesn't leave time or money to go other places. Good thing Disney is such a great place to go.

The Bombay chest was a good deal, half price, and I do like it, but I think it is too formal for the look I am trying to achieve.

I am trying to learn from my mistakes, but they still seem to happen a lot!!
