Also, I vaguely remember somewhere earlier in the thread, someone saying even if you are accepting payments through paypal but not by credit card tnen you do not tick the box listing paypal? Can anyone verify this? And if so, where do you say that you do accept payments through them though not by CC?

Should you NOT check off Paypal as a payment method if you DON'T accept credit cards? I did check off that I accept Paypal, but in my payment and shipping terms I CLEARLY stated that I don't accept credit cards. BUT, I DO see that in my auction it may look like I accept credit cards at the top.

Do not click the box that says you accept PayPal. And make sure on the PayPal site you do not have it checked in your profile (profile, Selling Preferences, Auctions...make sure you have the "Automatic Daily Logo Insertion" turned off). Just state at the end of your description that you accept PayPay transfers and money orders. I like to make the transfer part stand out. You'll still get a few that may try to pay by credit card because they are possibly new to Ebay or PayPal and dont understand the difference between a transfer and a credit card transaction. Simply deny these payments (if you accept PayPal changes your account to a business account and charges you fees to accept these payments) and then quickly email your winning bidder stating why you denied the payment and explain to them how to do a transfer.

If you are the seller do you leave feedback first or do you wait until the buyer leaves feedback that they are happy with the item and THEN leave your feedback

I always leave the feedback first. It seems childish to me to wait to see what the other person says. If they send their payment then I have no complaint and should leave a positive.

I guess I should just do this going forward? I would assume that I can't change the payment method now that the listing is up. Thanks for pointing out that PayPal detail - when I set up my account I ALMOST checked that box when I realized that it would look like accept credit cards. I didn't think about that when I actually put up my eBay listings...

That's exactly what I thought also! I said that I'd leave positive feedback when payment was received and hoped that they'd do the same when they received their purchase and were happy! Thanks!!:D

Ahh..the old "when to leave feedback" debate..

Personally I never leave feedback until the buyer has notified me that they received the item and are satisfied with it.. If I were to leave feedback ahead of time (such as the moment I receive payment) then when the item arrived, the buyer could decide there was something about it they didn't like; they felt they bid too much on it; or just plain had buyers remorse.. At that point they could post a NEGATIVE feedback for me and what recourse do I have? None - because I have already posted what a "wonderful" customer they are.. I prefer to wait - and if there IS a problem (which there hasn't been so far) - I will go out of my way to correct it. That way we both get positive feedback - and everyone is happy.. :) I actually had a buyer try to "strong arm" me into leaving positive feedback immediately, but I just emailed her my feedback policy and everything went smoothly after that..

It seems childish to me to wait to see what the other person says.

This has been argued since eBay started. It's not childish..it's a different opinon, IMO : )

This is what eBay says about it:
When should I leave feedback?Leave feedback after completing any purchase or sale on eBay. Your honest feedback shapes the eBay community and impacts the success and behavior of other eBay members.

To me this says when the sale is complete (and it may say something else to you..and that's fine). For me, my sales are complete when I know the person rec'd the item and is happy..that I don't have to do anything further in this sale. As a buyer, it's when I receive the item and am happy.
I use Vrane.com to leave my feedback and they have their program set up to leave feedback when positive feedback has been left to me, thus completing the sale.

Personally I don't care when anyone leaves it, it's up to them to decide what works best for them...just as it's up to me to decide what's best for me. It's a choice we all have to make for ourselves.

edited to fix all those darn typo's that sneak in!

I would assume that I can't change the payment method now

You can go into your description if you don't have a bid, and delete all the Paypal part if you wish. Just be careful what you are deleting.

Be careful when estimating shipping charges! I sold some of DD"s old shoes and had the shipping at 4.00. It ended up being 6.94. The winning bidder only paid 6.99 total. Oh well, live and learn. :teeth:

Thanks for the revising advice - I just took out the Paypal sign from all my auctions that didn't have bids! Whew, THAT was tiring! The kids are yelling at me that it is shower time - I can't believe it is 9pm already!! BAD MAMA!!

HELP!!!!!!!!! I got this email, how should I handle it? I would like to end the auction and go ahead and let this bidder be the winner, how do I do that?

There is nothing which can be done with this; however, I thought I had made a bid on this item yesterday whenit was listed as item --I registered and left a proxy bid. I was greatly surprised to find tonight tha this item has been re-entered I assume because the bid did not show or was not acceptable. Could you provide me sith some help or information. This was the first time I have bid on an item and I am fairly sure that I had followed istructions as to bidding correctly. I still am interested but do not want a repetition--I can ind any way to make a contact of E Bay to determine what happened to my bid--I only
seem to find discussion rooms where other users answer your
questions--great way to keep overhead down!

***** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****** !!!!!!!!

If you are relisting items that you listed last week during the one-cent gallery sale, be sure to uncheck the gallery photo box as they are now adding that 25 cents in!!!!

I only noticed it by accident.. As a rule I don't use the gallery feature and that would have cost me a bundle had I not noticed it while revising my pages!!!!!!!

C. Ann, I did the same thing. LOL I had to revise them after I noticed it.

I would not end the auction. Just tell her to rebid..as she must not have clicked on the final submit button. She may not have put the minimum amount in..it's hard to tell, since the wording isn't very good in her letter. I don't know what she means by putting in a proxy..that would leave me to believe that she meant to put a much higher bid in than the minimum. Is she from outside the states?

I agree with DMRick - I would not cancel the auction. If she really wants the item, she will place another bid..

How can they do this to me ????????????

I have to work today and tomorrow - and early Friday morning I'm having a dumpster delivered here so I can weed out all the REAL junk in the garage and get to the "goodies" that I can put up on eBay.. :(

Looks like I may have to stay up till the wee hours of the morning tomorrow night so I can get a bunch of stuff listed!!

Grrrrr..NEXT week - do this NEXT WEEK !!!!!

Wow - I checked one of my items and it has 7 bids. I was really surprised to see what it is going for.:earseek: Still waiting for those last minute bidders on those.

Anyway I'm getting encouraged again!!! I wish I could list more this week with the sale, but I'm going out of town so I'll have to wait until Monday.

9My husband signed me up for paypal the other night and put me as accepting e-checks. What is this exactly? I don't think he put credit cards just e-checks. There is soo much info on this thread that it's overwhelming!!!! I have a 6 month old daughter and she will not let me sit here and read the entire thread. I guess I'm just sooo ready to list a few things and see how they do but at the same time I'm very scared to-I don't want to do it wrong! I know that once I get started I'll catch on it's just that first few steps doing it. Do you think that C.ANN or DMRick can come down here to a little ole town in Texas and tutor me?(ha-ha) you guys make it seem so easy even though I've read that it does have it's down side(The work thats involved). I just don't want to screw it up. I plan on going to "The World" in march 2004 for the first time and taking my family(DH,DS9,DS3,DD) and this is the only way I see that I will be able to get some $$$$ together. Maybe later today when DD is asleep I'll try listing a few things(videos and toys)

Here's a situation I would like your opinions on please!:teeth:

On Monday, I went to the PO to mail some packages. While I was there I asked the clerk if the the PO cashes money orders. She said yes, but only if they were from the PO. I showed it to her, and she said that it was PO money order, and she cashed it, gave me the money and handed me back the cancelled money order.

Yesterday I received a letter from the PO stating that the clerk thinks she gave me the cancelled MO, and if so, could I return it to them. Problem is, when I got home on Monday, and logged in my shipping costs, I didn't think I needed to keep the old cancelled MO, so I ripped it up and threw it out in Monday nights trash, which was picked up Tuesday morning.

I went down to the PO yesterday, and showed them the letter and explained what happened. The Postmaster said that the cancelled MO is deposited to the bank, and that the clerk had to put cash in for the amount. It was for $16.00. The Postmaster, while disappointed, understood and thanked me for coming in. (I even offered him the address of the person who sent it if they needed the number from her.) The clerk (in the back while this was going on) yelled, as I was leaving "SHE THREW IT OUT?!?!" in total disbelief.

Now, I feel bad, like I did something wrong, but I honestly didn't know that I wasn't suppose to get the MO back. Most of my buyers pay through PayPal, and the few MO I have received were not PO money orders, and I cashed them at the bank.

I feel funny going back to the PO again, incase I get the same clerk.

I wouldn't worry about it. It was her mistake. You shouldn't have to worry about going back in there. If you're that uncomfortable, is there another PO close that you can go to?

Cindala- it wasn't your fault. The clerk learned a $16 lesson that day didn't she? Go to the PO and if she is nasty, rude or cold to you- don't hesitate to bring it up to her superiors.

The answer to "she threw it out" should have been "You gave her the copy you were suppose to KEEP??".

Geesh, you did nothing wrong (although I would keep all records of sales for a year..just in case of income tax problems..but of course, normally, you wouldn't even have had that copy of the money order...so this is still not to say you did anything wrong..you didn't!).
Guess maybe that postal worker learned from this..to pay attention. If she has the info, I'm sure in someway, it's traceable. She only has herself to blame, and while it was just a mistake, the mistake was hers, not yours, she has no right to try to make you feel guilty.
