According to George Lucas, the "Special Editions" are (for lack of a better term) canon. That's the way he always wanted them and to "old" versions are never to be seen again. Or at least in context with the film. I suppose "old" scenes could be included into documentary features but unless he's had a severe change of mind, the "new" versions are the only ones we'll ever see again.
Of course, GL thinks that people won't still through a movie that's much over two hours long. What's that sound? OH! It's Peter Jackson, LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!!!
According to www.dvdfile.com the Star Wars set will consist of 4 DVDs much like the Indiana Jones Trilogy that was released a few months ago. Here's a link to the story:
So sad that they won't be released in the orginal version. But hey I'm just happy they are finally coming out on DVD. Check that one off the list! Only thing left now is Seinfield!
For a closet Star Wars junkie this is the best christmas present yet! I have all 3 of the original movies on VHS when they were boxed as a set years ago and I've been patiently waiting for the dvd set and I finally get my wish. Now waiting for ep. 3 to come out and then get those 3 in a boxed set

I'm another owner of the original boxed set of the old releases. I do not have any of the "updated" tapes and only saw the new "A New Hope" at the movies.
I have the original three Star Wars movies on Laserdisk. I remember all the complaints about the version that Lucas put out on THX certified Laserdisk. It appears that they left out 8 seconds of a scene where Princess Leia was welding something.
I'll just be glad to see the DVDs regardless of which version they include. It will remove the temptation for me to try to transfer my Laserdisks to DVD.
WOOHOO!! Even though the only one that I really really like is the 1st one. I did not see the other 2 until they were re-released in the theaters a few years ago
Awwww, I thought you were going to tell everyone that Aladdin is coming out October 5!!!
I liked the 3 Star Wars films (now known as 4,5 and 6) but have never bothered with 1 and 2. I'll probably get them for DH.
Robin M.
I would do the same, but the set comes out way to early (before Christmas) for me to do that. I will buy them for DH "just because" when they come out. There is no way he will wait for 3+ months to have those movies on DVD.
