My dd is in 1st grade, and her teacher and I have a pretty good repour. I'm trying to figure out what would be a good but unique gift to get her for Xmas. I've had a few friends suggest a good bottle of wine. While I know if I were a teacher I would LOVE the gift (hee hee!) I'm just wondering how appropriate it is. Seems like a fine line to me, especially if the kids are bringing the gift in. (I'm thinking in this instance, I'd probably drop it off.)

Any teachers out there? Have people actually given wine to teachers? I've honestly never heard of it before. Sounds like a nice idea, but at the same time inappropriate. :confused3

I wouldn't - but maybe some teachers can chime in to voice their opinions on whether it's appropriate or not..:santa:

I wouldn't, however my mom (a teacher) once got a bottle of whiskey, a decanter and glasses.

I'm not a teacher but I vote it is inappropriate. Your child is giving the teacher the gift at school. A box of candy would be better.

Nope. Especially if it's being given on school grounds. (Illegal in this state to have alcohol on school grounds.)

well yes i have, but not because she was my childs teacher, because she is a friend. :rotfl:

Totally would! When I asked the director of DS's preschool last year what his teachers liked, she suggested wine. He's at the same school, but in K this year, and would do the same thing had I not already bought somethign else.

Teachers are human, too, and I am sure a good chunk of them like wine ;)

Nope! Not only is it a totally inappropriate gift at school - even if it were acceptable, we have a strict "under $3" rule so any wine conforming to those guidelines would be undrinkable :)

The under $3 rule is meant for state employees, but our district has decided it means teachers too. We can give gifts for the classroom, but nothing directly to the teachers. May I suggest a board game for when recess is indoors this winter?

Last week DD's teacher was telling me about a bottle of wine she recieved last year from one of the students. The teacher LOVED it. My only thought woudl be to include a note indicating the gift is to be opened afterschool.

I gave all my kids' teachers bottles of wine at the end of the last school year, but...well...I'm in Chile and even the school events like Carnival Day have a LOT of alcohol for sale. In fact, they even ASK parents to donate wine for the Teacher's Appreciation Day lunch.

We also gave my youngest DD's kindergarten teacher a bottle of wine a few years ago in Canada, but that was after a discussion my DH had with her about Chilean wines so we knew she would appreciate it (he was already working here but commuting back and forth at that time). As a teacher myself, I would have LOVED to receive a bottle, as long as it was brought in discretely.

PLEASE don't bring chocolates. There is only so much that a teacher can eat, and they often end up being donated/given away/thrown out. Might I suggest coffee/tea (or better yet a Starbucks gift card!) as a gift if you want to go that route.

Not in Chile ;) $3 would get you a very drinkable bottle. I rarely spend more than $6 on my own wine! Of course, the same bottle in the US costs about $15. (Sorry for going off-topic, OP!)

Are you sure she drinks wine?

If yes, then I think it is a nice gift, but hand it to her yourself after school.

If you're not sure give something else. DH and I have gotten so many bottles of wine as gifts and we don't drink so it just sits there. :confused3

I would give her wine only if I knew she really liked wine and would appreciate it, not just because you are trying to find a "different" gift. I would NOT have your child give it to her, what if she dropped it!:rotfl:

I would give it to her privately before or after school and only if it is within the school gift-giving rules.

If she is a "wine person" I'm sure she will appreciate it and maybe she can use one of the 100 mugs she's sure to get to drink it in!:lmao:

Yes, I know she drinks wine. We've talked about it often, because DH and I are part of several wine clubs, and I was telling her about some really great wines I got. (Which is why I was thinking of giving her one).

freckles and boo, good point about who it's from. that does seem to make me sway toward not giving it to her, since the gift should really come from my daughter. I just know she would really love the gift, but I just know there are really differing opinions on this out there.

And a Chilean bottle of wine for $6.00? SIGN ME UP!! LOL!

If you go to Catholic School they are cool with wine at school carnivals.

But a public school would call the cops on you:laughing:

Yup, I do every year, although rules in the UK may be different.

In year 4 (not sure what grade that is - they are 8-9 years) the teachers mentioned that they'd love wine or gift vouchers for one particular store. Apparently the year 4 classrooms looked like a wine merchants that year!

Since then I have done wine for head teacher, class teacher, violin teacher, piano teacher, saxophone teacher and school bus driver. I no longer do the head teacher as she is in senior school and sees it as creeping LOL.

ETA totally agree with the chocolates. I work with preschoolers and am sick of the sight of chocolate by Christmas. I normally end up giving away a lot of what I'm given.

I have become very good friends with my dd's teacher (who was my ds's teacher last year). I wouldn't have a problem giving her a bottle of wine for Christmas, but it would be from me, not my children, and I wouldn't give it to her during school hours.

I probably wouldn't but I'm sure some of my kiddos teachers would have appreciated it if I did.

NOT appropriate in any way! Are you going to have your kid carry it in????WTH!
It is illegal for alcohol to be in a SCHOOL, and for minors to HANDLE it. What kind of message are you sending to everyone?????
