Would you give your child's teacher a bottle of wine for Christmas?

NOT appropriate in any way! Are you going to have your kid carry it in????WTH!
It is illegal for alcohol to be in a SCHOOL, and for minors to HANDLE it. What kind of message are you sending to everyone?????

Very good points. I drink wine but would never have my child carry it to school. I can't imagine the school allowing that.

I wouldn't because it really is a gift from the kids to their teacher. Years ago when my son was 6 his bus driver dropped him off, last day of school. She had a vodka infused watermelon that one of the parents gave her! That always struck me as wrong somehow, but, at the same time a gift I wouldn't mind receiving!:rotfl:

Are you sure she drinks wine?

If yes, then I think it is a nice gift, but hand it to her yourself after school.

If you're not sure give something else. DH and I have gotten so many bottles of wine as gifts and we don't drink so it just sits there. :confused3

That's what I was thinking. DH & I don't drink, so it would sit there. Anyway, around here, giving it on the school grounds would be inapporpriate I would think. My thinking is that could be against the rules. I don't even think any events held in the school building are allowed to have alcohol. I read the rules somewhere once.

I don't know all the ins & outs but I would hate to end up getting the teacher reprimanded for having alcohol on their persons at school. I don't know that they would but I could see that being something that could get them in trouble -- think about it with the kids & zero tolerance for simple things...even though it seems so innocent as it wouldn't be open, etc... just the fact that the teacher has it in her physical presence could be an issue.

If you are friends with her outside of school & besides being your child's teacher, then you could give her the gift at another time & not at school.

In your case, where you have discussed wine with her, I would give her wine. I would not have my child give it to her, I would give it to her myself after school hours.

I will pm you my address, I would hate to think of all that wine sitting around cluttering up your home. The very thought makes me sad for you;):rotfl:

OP... I would not give her a bottle wine, I'm thinking the gift is to be from your child, yes? Then that wouldn't be cool

I'm sorry, and I really don't mean to pick on your spelling, but given the topic of this thread

My dd is in 1st grade, and her teacher and I have a pretty good repour.

this has to be one of the best typos ever.:lmao::lmao:

Now, back on topic, in the US I would never give a teacher a gift of booze from my kids. I wish it was acceptable, because my Christmas shopping for them would be finished.:headache:

NO! Most schools have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. I've heard of elementary aged children being suspended for bringing alcohol to their teachers at Christmas. This former teacher and school administrator recommends finding a different present.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

At least I can laugh at myself. TOTALLY awful typo, but TOTALLY hilarious. ;)

And for the record, I DID and still DO think it's inappropriate. But from what I've been told, it's something that many people do, (as also evidenced here) so it baffled me. I know it would be a gift that I'm sure teachers would probably rather get than another box of chocolates or bath soap, but nonetheless, it's still something I never thought would be a gift to give to a teacher...especially during school time, or by a child. I have just heard from many different circles that this has been done before, and never understood how that could be given at school. I thought I might be missing something, like how you can give alcohol to mailmen, but they can't accept cash gifts. (Never understood THAT one, either.) :confused3

So for the flamers and people freaking out, chill. :flower3: Yes, my dd's teacher and I have talked about our wine clubs, which is how this whole subject came up. When discussing it with others, and how I was struggling for a nice gift for her, all of them said I should give her wine. When I told them I didn't think it was appropriate, I heard several stories of people who routinely give out wine to teachers as gifts, and how the teachers really liked it. I'll make sure to email them all this thread so I can let them know that apparently:

a) I wasn't out of line in thinking something didn't seem right about it, as most people think this is not an okay thing to do under any circumstances.

HOWEVER

b) it seems that many people still do it.

:headache:

Thank you, this is why I asked. I thought for sure this would be something that is NOT legal, but it seems that many people are in districts that allow it. :confused3

I've given my kid's teachers more than a few bottles of wine over the years. The wine is accompanied by a card from my family saying "with thanks to Mrs Jones from the Smith family". My kids will pick out an ornament or make their own card from them.
Both of my parents are/were teachers. There were usually 3 or 4 bottles of wine every Christmas...and way too many mugs and boxes of candy. Most appreciated were the handmade crafts and cards. My mom still puts out a few prized ornaments on her tree every year.

What about a gift card to a local winery or shop?

I like this idea! Especially since you have talked about the wine club & you know she would like it. Solves the problem of having a child bring in alcohol (I hadn't even *thought* about the child getting in trouble with the Christmas gift until someone else brought that up with the zero tolerance, I had thought there might be something in the rules against the teacher accepting it -- it would be one of those to make the news -- First grade child suspended for bringing in Christmas gift of wine due to zero tolerance policies!!) YIKES.

The GC lets you get her wine without actually putting anyone in an odd position.

I would, but then I'm from the UK. I think it's a great idea, and who wants another perfumed candle anyway!

No, I wouldn't for one thing you can't have any sort of alcohol sp? on school grounds. As for another I don't drink wine and have no idea what kind to get or even if the teacher liked it.

Is your teacher over 21?

Teachers are adults, and I am sure like most of us they enjoy a good glass of wine every now and again. To be honest I don't see why this seems to be such a topic of discussion. As long as they are of age.

Last week DD's teacher was telling me about a bottle of wine she recieved last year from one of the students. The teacher LOVED it. My only thought woudl be to include a note indicating the gift is to be opened afterschool.

You would really have to tell someone this?!:laughing:

I think it's inappropriate for alcohol to be on school grounds. Maybe just give a GC to the wine shop. If the gift is from the child, I would pick something else.

I think its inapropriate for school. Like the pp's have said, a giftcard would be great! :goodvibes

If you can give it to her personally and there are no rules against it in your district, I see nothing wrong with it. I would check the rules first though and I definitely wouldn't give it your child to carry.
