Working on Weight Loss During Training—New Year New Us!

:goodvibes Good for you, Kay!!! Of course, it's doable! And you CAN do it, you just have to WANT it badly enough.

Wendy, I am sorry for your loss. I will pray for your continued strength! --The cravings for the white stuff passes and it gets easier and it is almost freeing to be able to leave it alone! It's like KNOWING you dodged a bullet or something!! ::yes::

Jen, try asking yourself after every couple of bites if you really want some more ....even of the good stuff. You will learn the signals your body is telling you! And it will be easier.

Dave, my friend, I LOVE bread, but I have found that real bread with seeds and grains and stuff tastes good, especially when the first ingredient isn't: Bleached wheat flour....How do you bleach wheat, anyway?? Clorox?:confused3

Hi Everyone!

I am finally back from our trip. I know, we got back Sept. 4th...dh's uncle passed a few days after we got back, and this is our first "normal" week for September.

I have worked out three days this week, and I decided I'm going to do WW online. I was very depressed last night when I looked at where I am:sad1: , but since I can't resign myself to getting bigger, I'm going to have to do what I need to do to get smaller. :goodvibes

Things have really been hopping on this site while I was away. Congratulations to everyone for their losses, and for hanging in there!

I have a new challenge for myself. There are about 5 weeks until Halloween. I am going to do my best to lose 10 lbs. before the ghouls and goblins abound. Anyone want to join me?

Wendy -- I am so sorry for your loss. Please be gentle with yourself.:grouphug:

Kay-- I need to lose plenty, too. It's ok. We will get there one lb at a time. :cool1:

Jen in GA -- I laughed because I put Twizzlers in ds's lunch this morning. I was very careful to keep them far away from my mouth. They are almost irresistible for me! I committed to no candy, cookies, chips or crackers for three days. I've done two so far. That is the only way I was resisting the lure of the Twizzlers!:rotfl2:

Connie-- I'm not ready to give up all the white food, but your post is making me think. Congratulations on your success!

Cindy-- Sparkpeople can be a real eyeopener. Best of Luck!:goodvibes

I have to run! Hi to Dave, Beth and Jen, I missed you, my buddies!

Maria

Hi Everyone,

Connie: It's great that you get so much in return for sticking with your no whites diet.

Wendy: I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad the nutritionist has helped you. It's great that you feel like you're eating all the time. It's much easier to maintain that plan when you don't feel like you're deprived.

hoosmi: It's funny how easy it is to fill up on something that's not worth the calories. I try to buy treats for my kids that I don't really like, but on certain days I'll dip into them anyway.

kayeandjim00: Welcome. You can definitely do a 5K. Be reasonable in your expectations and be diligent about working out and you'll get there. Best of luck.

Maria: Welcome back. Sorry to hear of DH's loss. I'm in on your 10 lbs by Halloween challenge. Good for you for working out 3 times this week. One of the sparks for me this past year to start losing weight was to think about if I would be happy being at my current weight for the rest of my life. The answer was a big NO which made me realize that if I did nothing I would be at that weight or bigger.

I'm still trying to figure out how to eat more veggies when I don't really like them. I'm going to try more soups since the blended flavors are a little more palatable for me.
I had blood work done last week as part of a yearly check up. My cholesterol is in the normal range with my good cholesterol shooting up 23 pts in the last year and a half. Yea exercise!!!

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Good Afternoon!

I am happy to report I'm 3 days into WW Online, and staying on plan. I also was able to walk 5.2 miles both Saturday and Sunday -- outside! :cool1:

During the week, I have to confine myself to the TM. On the bright side, I told ds I will watch DWTS with him -- from the TM. I am guaranteed a workout, and I won't have to skimp on my chore or family time to do it. I'm going to avidly search for other things I like to watch while on the TM. I tried and didn't do as well with movies, so I guess tv is the way to go. So far, I have DWTS, the Biggest Loser, and Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. Come January, I think AI will also be great.

I actually ended up with 5 workouts last week, Sun-Sat. That was a huge breakthrough for me. This week I'm going to have Sun, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. and Sat, at least that's the plan. Since I'm walking instead of running, I don't seem to be getting as sore, and I seem to be able to do more. It really is working better for me. What a blessing!:goodvibes

Cindy -- I can already feel those 10 lbs. melting away! It's good for me to have a goal and a deadline. It makes it easier to stay focused on working out and eating what I should. ::yes::

A big hello to everyone!
Maria

Hi Everyone,

Maria: Good job on 3 days. Keep it up. I'm glad you are able to work out more now that you are walking. What is DWTS? I only run 4 days a week or else I find my legs are very tired. I need to try to do something else on the other days. Finding the time is the trick.

I mentioned to my husband that I was trying to lose 10 lbs by Halloween and he asked "why, so you can eat 10 lbs of candy?". After 10 yrs of marriage, I have to say my husband knows me very well.

I did lose 1/2 lb this week, so just 9.5 more in 36 days.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Hi Cindy! Congrats on the half pound, it all counts! :goodvibes

DWTS is Dancing With the Stars. I definitely couldn't run as much as I'm walking! Keep in mind, my "run" was slower than Dave's walk. I am going to be vigilant about Halloween this year. Those little candy bars are tempting. DS actually doesn't like them, so I usually end up eating them. This year, they are going to work. And this year, all the Halloween candy is going away before Thanksgiving. It is not going to sit around to tempt me in a weak moment! :rotfl2:

I just got some good advice about spreading my points around better to combat late in the day hunger and have the energy to workout. I'm going to start eating more protein in the morning, and not having a pile of points left in the evening (which I use on junk).

I can't wait to see how my first weigh-in goes Friday. I'm a little nervous, but if I even lose half a pound I will be very happy. :thumbsup2

Have a losing day!
Maria

Cindy,I resemble that Halloween remark!! it just isn't fair when a DH calls you on something, is it??? My hubby knows that I would like to lose 5 -10 more pounds before ToT, but he also knows that I want to eat like a construction worker during my stay at WDW!! :thumbsup2

Maria, I do most my eating during the day. I have never counted points, but I have counted calories. I found that eating the majority of my food earler in the day, was better for me and I had more energy.

Kay, how's it going??

Wendy, how's it going with you?? Are you adapting to No white foods? -- Don't forget that there are alternatives to white food in nearly every category!

I hope everyone else is doing well, because

Here's to your health! Connie :wave2:

Hi, everyone! It is so nice to see everyone here and doing so well. I have been very diligent about journaling my food for 8 days now and was staying within the sparkpeople recommended calorie range. I wasn't losing at all, though, so I am resigning myself to being "fit" even if I am not losing. It can be very discouraging and I still haven't found the magic formula.

I usually don't eat white foods, preferring whole wheat pitas, multi-grain english muffins, etc. but today I had white rice with lunch and I have to be careful it doesn't set off a carb binge.

Keep up the great work everyone!

I stayed on the WW for 5 weeks and only lost the 5 pounds that I lost the first week. So am back to eating again and have gained those 5 pounds back. I think my plan is going to be go on WW diet for a week when ever I need to lose 5 pounds and then eat the rest of the time. I am sort of feeling like Cam at least I know I am fit.

Did anyone watch Dancing With the Stars? The one model who was so skinny her professional partner remarked how howfit she was. So I may be overweight but I am fit.

Nancy

Cindy, you might get a chuckle out of this one:

One evening a husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife
"Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in Slim Fast. Maybe it > would
take a few inches off of your butt!!"

His wife was not amused, and decided that she simply couldn't let such a
comment go without reward.

The next morning the husband took a pair of underwear out of his drawer.
"What the Hell is this??" he said to himself as a little "dust" cloud
appeared when he shook them out.

"April," he hollered into the bathroom, "Why did you put talcum powder in my underwear?"

She replied with a snicker. "It's not talcum powder......

It's 'Miracle Grow'."

Nancy, Hell Yea!!!! I would rather have a 'Fit woman, over a thin unfit woman' anyday.

This is cross-posted from my WISH journal. Not sure whether it provides any more info for anyone else, but take from it what you will. :confused3

Well, I am mostly copying this from an email I sent my dear friend this morning who has been putting up with me through all my scale travails:

How ironic is this? The scale FINALLY budges after a few days of heavy calories. I've read about it and heard all sorts of theories on it, but had been trying to be sooooo good. Whether the drop on the scale is due to all those days of being good, or two days of being heavy on the calories, I don't know, but here is what it looks like

9/22 ate 1600 calories (26 points) and worked out 2.5 hours (earned 8 APs and used only 3 of them) and dropped .1 by the next morning

9/23 ate 1,269 calories (21.5 pts out of 23 allowed) and went UP .7 by the next morning

9/24 ate 1,661 calories (35 points out of 23 +4 APs allowed) and dropped .8 by the next morning

9/25 ate 1,650 calories (29.5 points out of 23 allowed) and dropped 1.5 by this morning.

So, since last Monday -- I am down a net of 5.6, but if you look at last Wednesday to now, I am down 2.4, which is what I consider the "real" weigh ins, since Monday and Tuesday are always high for some reason and I was inordinately "high" at last Monday's scale session.

So, down 2.4 in a week. I'll take it. I really, really, REALLY want to be another 5 pounds down before ToT. I am thinking that what is really happening, in terms of weight watchers, is that I am eating my daily points plus some of my weekly points allowance and APs and am seeing some movement on the scale.

I think I will try to stick to around 1600 calories for a few days, rather than the 1200-1500 I'd been aiming for, and just see where that takes me. The coming weekend will be tough with a friend visiting and likely us eating out EVERY meal from Saturday lunch through Sunday lunch. I'll just try to be conscientious about what I am eating and portion size.

Dave: Thanks for the joke.

Cam: I see that happen too sometimes. If you can continue to lose wt with 1600 cal terrific. Hope it continues.

Nancy: Fit wins.

Connie: I think you deserve to eat well while at WDW. You definitely should have a treat for eating well most of the time.

Maria: Good luck at WI this week. Eating more earlier in the day makes a lot of sense. But I always try to save at least 2 pts for an after dinner treat.

Have a good day everyone.
Cindy

Good Afternoon!

Well, it's been a day. My boss announced she's hiring someone my co-worker and I strongly dislike, and my co-worker asked me to redo her resume...it's only going to get better, right?

I'm resting today, since I've walked 7 days in a row. I know I shouldn't feel guilty, but I think I won't lose anything if I don't give my body a day off.

Still doing well with the points, but I'm having to think a little more. This could be a full-time job!:rotfl:

Cindy -- I need a "later night" treat as well. Those Ghirardelli squares are 1.5 pts., and they seem to make me happy:love:

Cam -- Isn't it funny how you can't predict what your body will do?! I have given up trying to understand. I have *almost* accepted that I just have to keep doing the right things, and the weight loss/smaller clothes will eventually come. ::yes::

Dave-- I love the joke! I laughed outloud at my desk. My dh knows better than to say something like that!;)

Nancy-- Even my ds9 said the DWTS model didn't look good, without any input from me. I think it's going to take more than her constant winking to keep her on that show...:rotfl2:

Connie-- I'm making my shift to eating more during the day. I even put a reminder on my computer to tell me to have a morning snack...my problem is I really like eating at night, even though I know it's not good. I guess it's one of those things I'll get used to and then not miss (like diet and regular soda). :upsidedow

Everyone have a terrific afternoon!
Maria

Maria -- Good luck with your quest to re-organize your eating. :goodvibes Just DON"T do like I did -- I increased the food during the day thinking that would help me to eat less at night, but I continued by nighttime eating habits, too, and ended up eating MORE instead of less! :lmao: Leave it to me to even mess up a supposedly fool-proof plan! ;)

8.4 pounds gone since my visit to the nutritionist two weeks ago. My life without white foods is going pretty well. I must admit, though, I am eating mostly prepared foods -- Progressos new Light vegetable soups (zero WW points, 4g fiber, 1-2 servings of veggies per serving), LC "spa" meals, meal replacement bars (typically South Beach since they are very low in sugar), and keeping some fresh fruits and sliced-and-washed veggies on hand. There has been too much going on to do a lot of cooking or even planning. With these, I just pull something out for me, then cook supper for the kids and husband. Because I HAVE to get my weight and blood sugar down in the remaining 9 weeks before my followup appointment, I've been pretty diligent about restricting my foods. (I have always fought diet restriction as a way of life. Philosophically, I believe in the occasional treat, but this 9 weeks has a life-or-death kind of urgency for me.)

I had one of those "WHAT'S UP WITH THIS?!?!?" diet moments on Sunday (the day after my Saturday 20-miler) when my weight went UP 3.4 pounds. I had eaten roughly 1000 calories and walked 20 miles and the next day I had a 3.4 lb GAIN?!?!?! My nutritionist assured me it's just a fluid-flux thing and happens to everyone -- and it was gone the next day -- but it did freak me out. You certainly can't judge progress solely by the scale.

Thanks for the many condolences. When I get down I like to think, "We're closer to ToT every day!"

I have been thinking about being fat or being fit. It is kind of perplexing, because I weigh more than I would like.

I am thinking, that we don't know what fit looks like anymore. The examples in the popular media are: really, really skinny, really, really muscled, or fat. Do we even see people who are fit? I think that we don't. I think fit people don't necessarily have flat bellies, or tight abs, or round behinds, or whatever. I think people who are functionally fit, look ordinary. Not fat, not super muscled, just .....fine. I have noticed that actresses are showing their sternum and ribs from the collor bone down, I mean those bones are showing! It isn't attractive, to me. You don't see women with muscled legs or arms......and I don't mean the kind that get you first place in the MS Fit, USA competition, I mean that you see empty flesh instead of ANY kind of muscle definition. Anyway, that's just a bunch of rambling nonsense, but I do know this, if I have to workout 3 hours everyday to have a perfect body, I won't have a very good life. If I eat right, and exercise and try to be healthy well, then I will at least have an enjoyable life.

Connie I agree 100% with what you said. I'll go a step further, I personally like a woman who is fit enough to do the walk races with me but I also want a woman who is soft and pleasent to hold. The bone skinny "Modern ideal of beauty", that you see in models and actresses, is not appealing to me at all.

A woman who is pleasent to talk to and fun to be with trumps a fashion model anytime.

Just thought you might like a guys opinion.

Dave:hippie:

Fit or fat--right now I know I am neither, but I am working on it as best as I can and hope to turn the corner soon as to real progress. Part of the difficulty with the question isn't just the media standards. For example, until my use of some no longer generally prescibed medications to help with my arthritis problems, such as Celebrex and Mobic, I always had great blood pressure (much to the surprise of doctors given my size). Now, I am sure my excessive weight doesn't/didn't help and probably caught up with me, but at the time I weighed signifcantly less (had lost 100+ lbs). After taking these meds for a few months, however, the BP went haywire. We finally got it under control with meds, then the recommended BP ranges were lowered. My boss also, partly in jest, will regularly express his shock that my cholesterol levels are below acceptable ranges, while he needs to take meds to keep his in check. Finally, I don't think I have been within the recommended weight ranges, taking insurance policies as an example, since I was about 6 years old. This includes when I lost the significant amount of weight about 4 years ago. At that time, I got "down" to about 260 lbs and some people actually thought that I was loosing too much weight (I assume they were referring in reference to how I looked compared to what they were used to seeing me as, but at a little over 6 feet tall, I find it hard to believe 260 lbs would ever be considered too thin). I guess the above is a long and about way of saying I think being healthy does involve personal perspective. Doctors (I give mine credence as he always speaks to me in terms of me, not trying to force "generally" accepted charts) can also be of great help in terms of looking and doing tests about what's going on inside and too make sure everything is functioning as it should, but not overly emphasizing height and weight number without applying it to the individual patient. The arbitrary insurance company numbers just perplex me, and I do not really pay attention to the general media portrayals of health and good looks, which are aided with touch ups and digital correction. Hopefully, my daughters (who are all very fit and active in diverse sports) will continue to see that those on magazines do not represent real life, although I need to keep working on DD3.

Hi!

Just a quick check in to say I was down 3 lbs at my weigh-in! I am so excited! That loss is from eating right and kicking myself in gear on the workouts. I'm pretty sure it wasn't mostly water, because of all the working out. I can't judge myself just by the scale, but where I am, the scale lets me know I need to do some work!

Maria
