Words You Misspell

Theatre, which even now is highlighted on my screen in red. Spellcheck is judging me! That's how it was spelled at the local cinema growing up so that spelling stuck!

Also whoever thought of 'licorice' needs to self flagellate.

I really dislike when I can't remember how to spell everyday words like "and, or "the", LOL.
"eive" and "ieve" words frequently through me for a loop. I never know if it's "reiceve" or "recieve" or "receive" until I write it and sometimes not even then....

I've sort of given up on "theatre" and no longer care much if I'm spelling it the American, English, French or Spanish way as long as others understand what I've written:crazy:

Once the AP became a weird political organization in lieu of a news outlet, I threw out my Style Guide. Now my grammar is my own. I no longer feel the need to follow anyone else’s stinkin’ rules.
I no longer publish in peer-reviewed journals (that no one reads anyway.)
Ain’t nobody got time for that!

On every document my company writes “stationary” instead of “stationery” to refer to envelopes, etc.

Kaitlin. Katelyn. Caitlin. Caitlynn.....
I've met enough people with this name and I can never spell them correctly.
No, I still do not know the correct spelling!

I think there are probably people that use all those spellings. Names can be tricky.

DIL's sister is Caitlin, but goes by Katie with friends

Diarrhea, I could not spell it without spell check. I am a Facebook friend with someone I graduated high school with, for years, and ever time she uses the word “tommorow “ I cringe, doesn’t she wonder why spell check flags it?

And there are different regional pronunciations too. English people tend to emphasise ‘thee’, Welsh people tend to emphasise ‘et’ .

Sadly, most of what other people wrote. Also absence, brochure, embarrassed, and squirrel.

I did fine on spelling tests in school, when I could study the words, but in day-to-day use, forget it! My mom actually got a call once from my teacher, asking if she was helping me write my papers. The reason: my writing level on English tests wasn't up to my normal homework standard.

What was actually happening is that I was doing homework with a dictionary beside me, using all the words in my (I guess OK for my age???) vocabulary, but when answering essay questions on tests, I was substituting words I knew how to spell.

I've gotten better over the years, but most of it is thanks to spell check and Siri.

DH's answer: strategy.

I have an Irish friend who pronounces “poor” as “purr”, yes, like what a cat 🐈 does. It drives me a bit nuts inside.

I should ask her how she says purr.

DIL here is Katlyn. Vince usually will type it as KT.

My word is occaison. Yes, misspelled it again there. Occasion. Took me 2 additional tries here to get it correct. :faint: :badpc:

I’m never sure if it’s canceled or cancelled. I see it in print both ways

Me too.

Both are correct. I learned with two l’s, but apparently one is considered more mainstream in US. Britain still favors cancelled.

Yes. I do the same with travelled and travelling as well. I know either is correct, but for some reason I tend to use the British double L spelling, because it looks more “right” to me. :goodvibes
