Wk Of Sept 8 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Dave, I am so sorry to read that your mom has passed. My prayers are with you and your family...God bless.:grouphug:

MS Dave - I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jackie - a fracture?! My goodness, I am so sorry. Good news though is that it sounds like you will be able to complete the race!! Aren't you glad you went to the doc soon enough?!

Well, I just hopped off my treadmill and wanted to report my run. I ran 6 miles, the first .5 and last .5 were my warm up and cool down at around a 10 mpm. The 5 miles in between took 40:14, so an avg 8:03 mpm. I never would have thought last year that I would be hitting times in the low 8's. Last year I seemed to be stuck around a 10mpm. I feel like something has finally shifted and I actually have some speed to me again!!

Now if only everything else was going as well. DS6 has been having some serious trouble at school. His teacher is a brand new teacher, this is his first year teaching, and he has an entire class of 6 yr old boys (seriously I think there are like 3 girls in his class). He doesn't seem to know how to handle boys at all, and Michael is miserable. He actually told me the other day, "Mommy, I'm trying to be good but I still keep getting in trouble". In talking to some other parents it seems that this teacher is getting onto them for EVERY little thing they do because he is afraid that if he doesn't that he is gonna lose control of the entire class, but at the same time he can't just go around getting onto them for everything. It makes the kids feel like they can't do anything right. Then he is having a hard time in football too. He's on the starting line, but for some reason everytime one of the coaches (DH included) sends him in to play the head coach sends him back out of the game. It's been like this for the past 2 games. Last week Michael came back to the side line crying because they wouldn't let him play, and this Saturday he literally only played 3 plays the entire first half. Lately he just seems kind of down, which I hate, even my Mom noticed it yesterday when she came over to watch the boys. I think we are going to try to take the boys to the beach or the zoo or something this weekend, heck, maybe I can talk DH into another accidental trip for the opening of the Haunted Mansion this weekend. Something to cheer him up some.

Dana

Happy Monday, WISHers!

I really really did not want to run this morning but I went out and did a very hilly 4 miles. I parked at the Y so that when I was done I went in and did some lifting for my core. I really think I need to incorporate that at least twice a week to get through 26.2 miles. The run was okay; the hills were tough but if I'm doing the Raleigh half I'll have to get used to it!

Mel - 5:50 is awfully early. I know I'd trip in the dark! Glad Freddy and Jason were still sleeping.

Kim - Good luck staying on top of this thread. I can usually do it for a couple of days but it is tough!

WWDave - Sleeping in on Sundays is great! Of course my definition of sleeping in is now 8:00 - that's pitiful!

SWDave - Still sending PD your way and hoping that you're doing okay.

Denny - As a fellow former Ohio native, welcome to the south! You're right; we've taken over!

Lisa - PD for the knee! I hope it's feeling better.

Bill - I hate it when the rain just makes it feel MORE humid! WTG getting your 10 miles done!

Jeanne - Mornings are feeling a little cooler, although the afternoons are still way too hot. Do you get out early?

Beth - Welcome to the club! I don't know how I'm ever going to run 26.2 miles or why I ever signed up in the first place! The only thing I can do is continue to take one more step at a time...

Jackie - Yay! So glad to hear you have a fracture (boy that really sound weird) and will be back for the Raleigh marathon! I'll look forward to seeing you there!

Stephanie - I too found it amazing that Lance was so challenged by the marathon (of course his pace was outrageous!). Running takes a strong body and a strong mind.

Dana - WTG with the amazing pace! I can only dream of getting that fast. Sorry to hear about DS's troubles. Really sorry that his coach doesn't seem to understand youth sports! Get a grip - they're 6 and they all should play equally!

Happy training, all! :)
Renee

SWDave -- I am so sorry for your loss. Please know your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Not much training to report, unless you count walking to and from a high school football game Friday night, shopping the mall with DS14 Saturday, walking from and to not-too-remote parking at a university football game Saturday night, or doing nearly 4 miles of easy paced stroll at the state park yesterday. Oh, yeah, there was also walking most of a parade route with DS's high school marching band yesterday. Poor Carrie got no sleep and very little training during a hectic weekend in the topsy turvy keenercam/keenho world! LOL!

We won't talk about pizza, philly cheesesteaks, midnight dinner of yogurt & fruit, etc. etc!

Denny -- so glad to see you here and know you are doign well! :goodvibes

Jackie -- I know it's a weird thing to say, but I am so glad it is only a fracture and the doctor is sounding so optimistic. Now STAY OFF THAT FOOT!!!!

I know I missed many. I'm swamped. Catch up with everyone soon!

So.....on the training note.......I did 20 miles yesterday, and can I say it was BAD! I was acutely miserable. Around 16 miles I wanted to sit down and cry, but couldn't find a bench. I am now severely doubting that this marathon will ever get done. :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 During my 20 mile training run I was even questioning the "why" of the situation. Why did I ever think that this is something I want to do???? :scared1:  I am committed to trying, but I now think it might lead to my first DNF.

My dh wants me to be more positive, but I can't seem to get there....but love him for trying!

Beth, I promise you that what you are feeling is normal for (most) everyone. There is always some point during my training as the miles get long and it seems my pace drops off the bottom of the chart that I question if I can finish another marathon. 20 miles in training is a long way; but 20 miles in a race is "oh my gosh! I'm actually going to finish this thing!" Honor your rest days and your training schedule and you will come out of this just fine. This is simply one of those tough training days that happens to everyone. You are not only OK, you are phenomenal!!! 20 miles, girl!!!! You are a goddess!!!!

Beth -- I could not have said it better than Wendy. Congratulations on your 20 miles!! That is so awesome!

Good Morning again team.....catch up time,

CamSure all those things count and training.....and nope not talking about the treats:rolleyes1 One of my great friends son plays high school football in Illinois, not sure what State you live in but sounds like they are great games. I think we are heading out on Sept 22, they have a rare Sat game as the team up in Chicago doesn't have lights so they play on Sat.

Renee Congrats on the 4 hilly miles that is awesome. Way to Getr done!!!

Dana WTG on your 6M on a TM, that is awesome!!!! Sorry to hear about DS, it is heartbreaking when Mom can't fix everything for them....talking from personal experience....DS is 18 and DD is 15 and I want to solve anything that comes up but I know I am not doing them any favours by not letting them work these things out.... but your DS is only 6, I think the teacher has to give them some slack, my motto as a parent is to "pick my battles" and it sounds like that what the teacher needs to do.

Jackie Sorry to hear about your MRI results, but nice to know you should be able to complete your event coming up.

Beth You can definatley do this!!!!:grouphug: Wow 16M, 20M those are all awesome distances. We are all with you along the way cheering you on cause we know you rock and you will get it done!!!!!:thumbsup2

Kevin, Beth Less then 3 weeks till Toronto....can't wait

Am I caught up???? Have a great day all.

Kim

MSWDave - Sorry to hear about your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Hugs to you!!!

I am slowing getting back into training. I was able to get outside and run a little over 3 miles yesterday - I went a new route and wasn't sure of the milage until I looked it up) I took it easy and walked alot since I am trying to get back into the swing of things. But it felt good to be out and getting some training in. I noticed somewhat of a cooler temp when I was running (not that I wasn't fully sweaty.) Hopefully this is is a sign that cooler weather is on its way (but I am not holding my breath since this is south Florida and we have maybe 2 cold days a year!! LOL)

Beth- if it makes you feel any better, as someone who is going Goofy, but has yet to run a LR over 9 miles, I take comfort in the fact that you had a hard long run. Not because I'm happy you suffered, but because you are setting an example of getting through it regardless. So when I'm whining this weekend doing my first double-digit run, I'll be able to think about you and how you went twice as far!! You go, girl! ;)

SWDave- I'm so sorry about your mom.

Dana- OK, I generally run about a 10 minute pace- if I bump the TM up to 8:00 (or run downhill LOL) it feels like I am flying! Really impressive pace and especially for 5 miles (I'd last a block, maybe). I'm sorry about your son's teacher/coach. The teacher needs to get a grip. And the coach- what's up with that? When my daughter played soccer, they rotated everyone, even the kids who always ran the wrong way! (My kid didn't run the wrong way, she just didn't run much at all in any direction:rolleyes1 )

Jackie- hope you get better really soon!

Renee- 4 hilly miles, and then lifting?! I'm impressed. I have yet to do any lifting unless you count lugging around a squirmy toddler!

Cam- Treats don't count when you are entertaining a friend! I mean, who wants to party over rice cakes and tuna?! It would be rude to not have something tasty.;)

As for training, I officially start my training plan today (I'm using a hodge podge method- a little of this and that).

So let's see-- Monday is a rest or cross day. Guess what- I'm right on schedule! :lmao: I may run a little tonight or do some cross training just because it feels so anti-climatic to do nothing now that I've "begun."

I did a little over 3 miles yesterday outside at 1:30. For some reason, it felt kind of cool when I started. I guess it was a residual effect of being in the A/C inside, because within a few minutes I was really hot. I kept plugging along anyway, just meandering around the neighborhood. Then DD and I went for about a 3 mile walk with a friend and her DD. I'm trying to get my friend interested in WISH and running- she has the mindset that she is out of shape, but she can actually walk a lot faster than me!

Absolutely am NOT supposed to be on here at work, but have to report...

Had the MRI this morning. Doc just called me with the results - I have a fracture, not a torn tendon. Told me to use crutches for the next three weeks; no weight at all on the foot. I told him I had to ask what the outlook is for the Raleigh marathon on 11/4 - run, walk, not at all - he said I'll be able to do it!

Jackie

That is actually wonderful news as from what I gather, a bone heals more quickly than a muscle or tendon!

A speedy recovery to you!

SW Dave: I am so sorry to hear about your mom......I lost my mom in 2001 and it was very difficult. I am sorry for your loss.

Beth

Let me introduce you two:

Beth....meet the wall!

The wall, meet beth! Please be nice to her next time.

In the meantime, beth, celebrate the positive! You didn't quit. you finished!

ON race day--take it easy. Don't try to win, just try to finish! Sometimes you can trick the wall that way.

And for most athletes, you spend the moments climbing that wall beating yourself up that you made the most foolish decision ever. Embrace that feeling. Then kick it to the curb! And enjoy the home stretch. :)

Hi friends. I did Body Pump this morning and a short run/walk. It was humbling to do the Body Pump class, let me tell you! Taking any time off doesn't sound so great anymore! I'm paying the price!

Jackie-- Speedy healing!:wizard: I think Lisa is right about a Fx healing faster than a soft tissue injury would. Follow your doctor's advice and recover quickly!

Beth-- I'm so impressed with your 20 miles, stonker or not. I've never run 20 miles and I'm not planning on running it any time soon. My body just couldn't go that far. Truly. I know the run was hard (which is normal!) but ...I'm so happy for you that you did it! That's awesome!:thumbsup2

Dana--how did you get faster??!! Any tips?? I think I only have one speed.:lmao:

Jen in Ga-- hey friend. Have you done any runs/walks with your daughter in prep for the TOT? I haven't done any yet with the boys and I'm starting to put more thought into how on earth we're going to manage! What was I thinking??!!

Have a great Monday!

Dana--how did you get faster??!! Any tips?? I think I only have one speed.:lmao:

Honestly, I started getting faster because I was doing the C25K with my DH for a couple of months. He is naturally just faster than I am and I seriously had to pick up the pace just to keep up with him. Then I started running 4 days a week instead of 3 and making one of those days a serious speed day. Tempo, Intervals, or Sprints at least once a week. I also have been running the last 1/3 of EVERY LR at my goal marathon pace 8:40mpm. I think all of these things have helped alot, and I am hoping for a sub 4:00 this year. I think there is some truth to the theory that in order to run faster you literally have to run faster!! Easier said than done, believe me I know!!

Dana

Dana- thanks for the tips! I wonder if I can commit to trying to be faster...

Vicki- training for ToT? Hmmm... well, we did walk about 3 miles yesterday, but it was a pretty slow pace. I'm planning on relying on the race atmosphere, the whole out late at night thing, the WISHers chatting, the promise of the medal and the rides at the end.

If that doesn't work, there's always dragging. You take two of yours, I'll have a free hand for the third! :lmao:

I walked on my tm for 30mins. this morning....I'm really taking it easy because I don't want my pf to start up again til after the 9/30th marathon...I am having such a hard time with it. Anyhoot, for you computer people, DH bought my an Ipod shuffle for my birthday (9/12) and I don't have a clue on how to download my cd's to it. I don't want the music that they offer on Itunes.com and would prefer to have my own. How do I download my cd's? Thanks.;)

Dave – I am so so sorry! I do not even have the words to express how sorry I am for you. Please always feel free to post even if it is sad news. Let us know how you are doing. You are in my prayers.

Lisa – Be careful with the knee!

Beth – DO NOT DOUBT YOURSELF! Everyone has had a run like that. Now you have it out of the way and the marathon will be great!:cool1:

Denny – What 10k are you doing? You will find that Charlotte and the surrounding areas are full of people form other places. It is hard to find someone who has lived here all their life. DH and his family are the only ones I know of.:confused3

Jeanneg – AHHH the body! Yes, it was female and they are investigating it as a homicide!:scared1:

Jackie – Great news about the marathon. Now stay off that foot!

Dana – WTG on the run! You are flying! You are right! To run faster, you have to run faster. So sorry about DS! Hope that teacher loosens up a little.

Renee – WTG on getting out there and doing the run!

Wendy – Ron is doing that same marathon. I did keep my mileage up this year and last year…but I say the resting after Goofy is a lot more fun.:woohoo:

I had counseling appointments today (My job…I am a therapist) and DH apparently forgot about them…he was calling me over and over, but I did not know. He thought I had gone running and something had happened to me. Bless his heart. I always let him know if I run somewhere other than the treadmill or around the block.
On that note…I ran in the neighborhood today. 5 miles of hills. JRT really slowed me down she wanted to sniff EVERYTHING…so I took her home ½ way through the run. Hill work is another way to increase speed with less chance of getting hurt. But DO NOT do hill work and speed work in the same week.
I am now tapering.

Dave--So sorry to hear about your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Hmmm....

took a rest day today....

I am wondering if this is an ITB thing. I had hubby do the roller on it--and let's just say...when it hurts like heck...(I have had it worked before)...I wonder if that is making for my knees to ache.:confused3

In any case--I will continue massaging them and stretching them properly.

But anyone else here have that?

I know some folks do fine with proper stretching, icing, and massage...

but I have known one person that had to switch to all walking b/c hers was so bad.

So just wondering.

Not a big deal--at least much better than a meniscus tear.
