Wk Of Sept 8 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Saturday I did six miles at the track. I forgot to bring in my splits, but that's OK because they weren't so great anyway. We didn't get to the track until 7:30am and by then already it is completely in the sun. It was so hot and humid I couldn't stand it. Even at that hour. Then we went to a local Grange Fair and again I was out in the sun. Then Sunday was a rest day but we went to the Oyster Festival and all day we were out in the sun. Yesterday I was off and spent half the day....yup, out in the sun. Between the sun and the humidity I feel worn out. I'm kinda glad it's raining today. This morning I did three miles on the TM. I really feel like I'm getting back in the groove.

Lisa
- How's the knee today? The IT band? Have I mentioned how glad I am that you are back on the WISH board? I missed you here. :goodvibes

Judy, you are such a sweetheart!

Since about 90 minutes ago, I feel a million times better than this morning!

WTG on your 6 miles! I've been gone so long--when did you join the Distance Diva Club???? WTG!!!

Well. I got in my 3 miles today, it was supposed to be a nice and easy run (since I ran my tempo yesterday). Unfortunately being so close to breaking an 8 min mile yesterday caused me to act like an idiot and try to break that 8 min mile today. I did it, but I'm kind of mad at myself now. This weekend is supposed to be a 13 mile LR, and I am in the middle of training for the Full in January, and I am out acting like a dummy. This is the kind of stuff that hurts people in training, and my hip is a bit tight now (I think that's because the route I have been running lately is rather hilly), but you would think I would know better. Here's my time and splits. I am gonna go continue telling myself I should know better.

Mile 1: 7:55
Mile 2: 7:52
Mile 3: 7:34

Total: 23:21

I signed up for a USATF stretch study. Just found out about it and signed up to participate. They are doing a study to determine the effect of pre-run stretching on running injuries. They have 2 different groups - the stretching group and the non stretching group and I was assigned to the non stretching group (probably because I don't normally do alot of stretching prior to my run.) So for the next 3 months I will be apart of this study. Hopefully it will result in some good research. I am allowed to stretch after or at some other time just not prior to running.

This sounds fascinating. Please keep us posted on how it's going & how the study turns out.

Well, I actually got to finish a planned run (I use the term loosely) -- mostly walking. But, I am discovering that I run slower than many of the WISH walkers -- so even walking is a workout for me. ;) 2.5 miles :cool1:

Anyway, my workout yesterday was cut short by kid bickering that I had to stop and referee, then it was too late to finish before the next chauffering had to start. Better planning paid off today, and while there was some complaining when I came in at least they managed not to kill each other -- or interrupt me!:woohoo:

Stacey I love the quote about being pecked to death by chickens! Those chicks are cute, but boy can they peck sometimes!

The puppy (and DS) are finally getting their morning routine worked out so I think my runs can move back to morning. It's more relaxing if I don't have to wonder if the kids are killing each other while I'm sweating. I like to sweat in peace.

SWDave - My DW and I would like to send our most heartfelt condolences in this very difficult time to you and your family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Beth - Great job on finishing the 20 miles. It will get better. When I did my 18 mile LR a couple of weeks ago, it was like your 20. A major STONKER! But the next LR went great. You will have a great marathon!
Krista - So the next time I see you and Steve, I will make sure I am out of arms reach when I do the Icky Shuffle while wearing "Ocho Cinqo" and singing "Who Dey?".....just kidding I'm not a Bengals fan. To make up for it, I'll offer Steve a nice cold Coca-Cola and maybe he'll toss me his jersey.:)
Jackie - PD :wizard: for a quick recovery in time for the Raleigh half.
Denny - Congrats on surviving the move. Consider it "off season" cross training.
Christa - Good luck on your Century Ride this weekend!
Cam - Thank you for recommending that book "Devil in the White City". I picked it up and am half way through it. Very interesting. I am planning a trip back to Chicago (maybe next month) to go to Jackson Park.
Judy - Good job on the 6 miles at the track...splits smitchtz - Your BACK!
Mel - What....no Lime Green?!? We gotta talk to these SIGG people!

Training Note:
48 min today at a 4/2 pace. Tapered my LR starting this past Sunday with a 14 miler. Will do a 10 miler next Monday and that will be it for LR until my marathon debut on the 23rd.

Happy Training!

SWDave – my heart aches for your loss. :grouphug: Lots of prayers for you & your family.

Jackie – glad to hear your Raleigh marathon isn’t completely out. Remember DLF > DNF >> DNS

Beth – 20 miles is not bad….it’s incredible!!! Don’t give up! We know you can do it.

Tricia – good job. As Bill Murray says in “What about Bob?”…doing the work…baby step’n. That’s how you start & that’s how you keep it going: one baby step after the other.

I'm starting slow after 6 months off. Have worked up to 1 mile run & ¼ walk tonight. No land speed records, but with the penguin & turtle as my mascots it’s not about speed but going the distance.

Found these for inspiration to help us get thru this weeks struggles (mental or physical)…

Good morning WISH Team.

Wow what a temp change, it's been 70s every morning for months here in Southern Ky, yesterday it was 66 and today it's 53. It feels almost cold out there. My walk should be very pleasent, planning on 4 to 5 miles.

I'm enjoying my coffee and cereal and about ready to head out for the Gym.

Poll question, how many of you eat breakfast before you work out? My theory, originally told to me by Denise Austin (one of my heroes) is that you will do better and burn fat more efficienty if you have a small breakfast before you head out.

Have a great day everyone.

Dave:hippie:

Today is a non running day. I hopefully will get some stretching and strength in today but who knows. Tomorrow I have a run outside in the morning planned (that is if I can get out of bed in enough time!! LOL) Just wanted to post a story about a local high school cross country meet that had an awful outcome for one student. Hopefully they will be able to tell what happened.

Everyone have a great day and be careful out there!!

Good morning everyone! Not much to report today. I took a total rest day yesterday b/c it seems that my cold has made a rally and I feel bad all over again. I don't know if it was from my stonker 20 miler or not......but I felt really bad! Today I have jaw pain and a headache. I will run some today, but I am not pushing it. I want to get to the marathon start line healthy (and happy!), so I don't feel the need to push it.

Nancy:I missed pump class......how did it go? I was planning on it, but I felt rotten at that point! DH offered to go out to eat (to save me the cooking time) but I couldn't even do that! You know if I didn't go out to eat, that I felt pretty bad!!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Dave: I usually eat breakfast every day, but if I am going for a run I usually only have a banana or something. I do need a little something before a long run though, or I totally run out of gas. Glad your weather is better!

Jackie: Sending you lots of PD for the injury!

CJ: Thanks for the great quotes! I love the Penguin! And he is right.....I do need to push what I think are my limits.....I never think I can do anything!

Sir Bouncealot: Thanks for the encouragement.....feeling pretty low right now. I just think if I tank on the 20 miles, what the heck am I going to do with 26.2? But I am glad that your experience was similiar!

Have a good day everyone!

Beth

Good morning everyone!

It's been another WTO so far this week.

Training is going well. 6 miles on Sunday and 3 last night. 3 scheduled for today and tomorrow. Nothing significant to report otherwise.

Sorry I can't catch up with everyone.

To all those ailing - I hope you get better soon.

To all those training - Keep up the great work.

To all others - W'sup? :cool2: :dance3:

Good morning Vic, W'sup with you wild man. I was thinking about you this moning while I was showering in our co-ed locker room at the gym, they encourage the use of towels to and from the shower but most ignore that and just go la'natural.

I had a wonderful walk this morning, the temp was 53, about 20 degrees lower that it has been so it was perfect walking conditions. I did 4.5 miles on the hills in 57:05 including the slower first mile to warm-up.

Well time to have something to eat and get ready for work. And Vic I was kidding about the co-ed locker room, thought that would wake you up though.

Have an awesome day y'all.

Hey everyone-

So far I am doing ok on my goofy training plan (it's just week 1, but it's a start!) I did 3 miles yesterday and 5 today. I printed out my calendar so I can write completed workouts in the boxes in green ink (in theory I'll use red if I don't finish a workout). Worrying about that stupid green ink and how I didn't want a red entry kept me going on the most boring TM run in recent history! How simple am I that I can manipulate myself?! :rotfl:

Jen in GA

Tricia - I can't believe about that poor kid. Something just doesn't sound right. I ran Cross Country in high school, and some of our courses even ran through very large ditches, but to end up in a pond that's 10 feet away from the course between mile 1 and 2? It just doesn't add up. Please post an update if you ever hear one, I can't imagine how that could happen.

Vic - Wassup?!

WW Dave - You know you shouldn't do that! I actually was taking you serious. I was trying to imagine how they could get away with a co-ed locker room!! I don't know about Vic, but I am sure awake now!!

Jen - That's the kind of calendar I need to work out. I sometimes get really upset with myself when I skip out on a run. If I had it in front of me in RED ink every time I fluffed off I would probably do it alot less!! ::yes::

As for me today is a rest day. Thankfully I feel much better about yesterday. 1) my hip isn't hurting as bad today, and 2) I can't stay mad at myself for too long (who would I talk to?). I wish I could find a way to NOT push myself hard every run. I do go out with every intention of a nice SLOW run, and always end up trying to make a PR. This isn't my first time around this track, I really should know better, but..... All I can do is try and keep my inner speed demon under control. Anyway, I hope that everyone has a wonderful day!! I am off to clean, wash laundry, mow the yard, and go grocery shopping!! Doesn't that sound like fun?!

Dana

Good afternoon all!!

Just a real quick drive-by.......

I have been incredibly busy the past few days-- working five doubles in a row plus beginning marathon training (finally!) this week! :cool1: Definatley an LTO week

Monday I did 3 miles in 28-ish and then another 3 miles on Tuesday at 27-ish with another 5 miles scheduled for today. So far, so good!!

We leave tomorrow for a week in Ft Lauderdale. I will be needing to get up early weekend to get my LRs in, but at least there is no chance of snow, right?? And to top it all off, it looks like we might be able to fit in a day to drive up to Orlando for a day at Epcot :yay: :yay:

I apoligize for not having time to read through all the other responses right now. Hope everyone's training is going well!!! Just 17.5 weeks now!!

Happy training!

I'm still asleep so I figure I better ask this. Are you kidding about thinking about Vic while in the co-ed locker room or are you kidding about the co-ed locker room. :lmao:

We would appreciate any of that cool weather that you want to send down here. The news mentioned that it might be a warm winter again. Hopefully they don't mean the weekend of Jan 11th-14th though.

Bill

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with WWDave thinking about me in the shower. :rolleyes1 :confused3 :lmao:

The co-ed locker room deal is a different kettle of fish. :thumbsup2

Greetings Everyone: Thank you all so much for your concern and sympathy over the death of my Mother. I really appreciate it. We're getting ready to leave now to drive down to Delaware for Saturday's services. I'm hanging in there. There's been a lot of ups and downs this week, and at times I've felt like an empty shell. Thanks for all your support though.

I did get out and run the past 3 days, just to get outside and get distracted. The runs weren't great, but it was good to be outside.

Christa- I wanted to WISH you the best in your century ride for MS. Such a great cause, and I'll be thinking of you. You're doing great things!

All my best to my teammates. I'll be back on Sunday.

Dave -- Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you while you are in Delaware or travelling through in either direction. I'll PM you my contact information.

Hi, I'm new to the WISH board and Vic pointed me here to introduce myself. :goodvibes thanks, Vic!

Dave, don't know you, buddy, but so very sorry about your loss. hugs to you!

I wanted to pop in since I've started posting on the event page and I didn't want anyone to wonder, "who the heck is that?" I was fortunate enough to meet one WISHer at the DL 1/2 last week.

I'm in F40-44 AG, been running since 1998, and triathlons since 1999. I'm not fast (I see some speedy times posted here!) but I have fun. One day...oh, please Tinkerbelle send some Pixie Dust...I will go sub-9 min. miles for a 5K. I was close last year, but not quite there.

I'm just getting back into a training routine after doing an Ironman race (my 5th!) this summer. I slacked off for a couple of months, but now it is time to get ready for my first Goofy! (have done the 1/2 3x and full once there). TOT run just got put on the schedule, too...just in the nick of time!

OK...so that's me! Happy training and racing!!

Hi WISHers!

Well today I just did not want to run. The whole way I wanted to walk, without any good reason at all. I never got into a "groove". I was doing a bit of a different route through some older neighborhoods in town (read shady and rolling hills). I was on my way back to the main road and came upon a very very steep block. I think my jaw hit the pavement! :scared: :crazy2: :faint: I paused, thought about what a true athlete would do, and turned the corner to take a more gradual slope back up. Let's just pretend I did that because I'm trying to stay healthy and not injure myself! :rolleyes1 Anyway, I got in 4 miles followed by some sprints and I did run the whole way. It was nice and cool, even at 9:00!

WWDave - I always eat a mini bagel with cream cheese washed down with Pepsi, the breakfast drink of champions!

Tricia - So sad about that xc runner! We had one end up in the hospital here for several days b/c of the heat.

Jen in GA - I have my training plan on the refrigerator for all to see and I check off the workouts I complete.

Dana - Laundry + mowing + groceries does not equal rest day!

Kevin - Good job with getting in the 2 3 milers; good luck with the 5!

Bill - I read the farmer's almanac is calling for a warm winter. Let's hope that doesn't translate into a hot, humid marathon weekend!

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with WWDave thinking about me in the shower. :rolleyes1 :confused3 :lmao:
None of us are!

MSDave - You continue to be in my prayers; feel free to PM me if you need to "talk" to someone who's just gone through all this.

Ironz - Welcome! You are now officially introduced and a WISH team member. Scary, huh?!?

Sorry to anyone I missed; busy day around here! I've been cooking all day to celebrate my dad's birthday tonight.

Happy training, all!
Renee
