Thanks for the support for DH. He's in a medical trial and it seems that he's got the meds not placebo and the meds ARE helping. It's not life-threatening at least this part of his life...we've lived that part already. He had his colon removed back in '02 and is doing well. This is really the first time he's had any sort of additonal problems with the whole thing. Docs had him go for bone scan to check if the hip replacement ('04) was a direct result of the long-term steriod treatment and we will know if he needs additional supplements in a couple of weeks. He's also doing well since the bypass ('03) and has a new lease on life. '02, '03, '04 were rough times, all's much better now with my bionic man. Stress releasing was what got me started in this business of 5ks, halfs and fulls...works wonders for me too. (mostly)

Lily :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: for you and DH. I hope the meds really help, it sounds like he has had way more than his share of medical issues already.

Bill & Lynda-- I'm late in congratulating you on the new little one on the way :cheer2: You must be so excited.

I can't wait to hear the DL reports and watch the results "near real time" thanks to our very own WISH sports announcer, Escape!

I'm pretty sure the 3 mile walk Monday night was a bad idea. The Y pool is re-opened so I'm going to make my next workout a water one.

16 yos are just so much fun. Last week the major priority of the entire household was to get DDs home-made iron-on transfer shirt made. And inthe end I didn't approve of it one bit anyway  I don't recall my parents bending over backwards for every whim I came up with! I guess I'm a wuss.

This week it's home-made granola. Last night I did too much bending because I re-made DD's home-made granola. I had to remake it because I'm an idiot  She bought all the ingredients herself (~$20) but I told her to use the olive oil I had on hand. Well between the fact that it was olive oil and fairly old, the flavor was less than spectacular. She got the recipe from a lady she works with at the ortho-office. I begged her to not tell the lady I said to use olive oil. She'll think I'm an idiot (.... well). So I went out and bought peanut oil and remade it but it required lots of bending to get it in and out of the oven for mixing and that wasn't a good thing. Plus, now we have about 20 cups of granola in our house.

I guess shot or no shot, I still have to be super careful.

Morning WISH Team!

I've got a few minutes break and I'm taking it!

Rhonda! Thanks so much for handling our party. You are so busy, I hope all goes well and that you have a great vacation! Have fun!

Christa, PD and prayers your way for those work issues.

Kathy, thanks for the info on Lynne. eeeeyyyyeeeewww on the wet stuff.

Lynne, hope your presentation is great and that you feel better real soon.

Susie, thanks for being our DL reporter. I will be looking forward to that info you will be posting for sure.

OK, not sure what I'll be getting done steps-wise tonight, but I will! I keep thinking that if I weren't doing this how badly I'd feel (Arthur Itis is giving me some what for). My Mom is going to PT for some issues she's having with knee pain...another Arthur problem. Anyway, PT person told her that there is visible improvement with her strength/mobility even if her pain is not less. She is discouraged about the pain part, I'm encouraged about the strength/mobility part. The message in this is to keep at it as best as you can even if you don't want to. Movement helps!

Keep on keepin' on!

Don't forget WISH Chat tonight!

Mel - That gown is gorgeous, you are certainly a talented person... :thumbsup2

Hi All,

I have more to say on this whole spine thing, partly because it is always on my mind, but partly because I want to make sure to WARN all of you, just in case some of this is true.

As many of you have noticed, my care from 5-6 drs has seemed mis-guided and uncoordinated. I have a theory I've been working on that goes back to the Levaquin (Quinolon antibiotic) I was given in May.

Facts:
1) All drs are puzzled at my age and level of degeneration in my spine & none of them agree completely on the diagnosis
2) My symptoms don't match the diagnosis-- stenosis usually makes walking difficult and sitting relieves pain. For me, the more I move, the better I feel.
3) The degeneration apparently has been building for years, yet I felt no symptoms until one morning in May when I literally couldn't get out of bed.
4) That morning in May was during my Levaquin treatment
5) Several days earlier I "snapped" my left elbow resulting in severe tendonitis that rendered my arm nearly useless for weeks (still hurts on occaision).
6) Levaquin has a "rare and serious" side-effects warning of joint and tendon injury and neuropathies

OK, to me, there's a pretty clear case that since I was fit and normal prior to taking Levaquin and I've been in h*** since, there's a strong chance it has something to do with it.

I've found many sites devoted to getting the word out. I filled out an "adverse reaction" form on the FDA site.

But the thing that has my skin crawling right now is a paper written by a group of former athletes. They have nothing in common except that they used to be athletes and have not been able to return to their sports after taking quinolone antibiotics. They are not medical experts and don't pretend to give medical advice, but what they say rings so true to me. The "rare and serious" side effects are much more dangerous to athletes because we put added wear and tear on our tendons and joints that sedandary people do not.

Here's a quote from the paper about recovery:

paper said:
Chance of Recovery:

Therefore, if the toxicity level is not high, that is to say, if there are little nervous and vascular system alterations, the average person will probably recover, albeit with the cartilages of the weight bearing joints slightly eroded. The athlete will enter an accelerated course of decay because his/her cartilage will not keep up. The endurance athlete will no longer be able to perform at a decent normal level.

If the toxicity level is high, the average person might eventually get a decent daily life similar to the one he or she enjoyed before taking a quinolone, but with some physical limitations for repetitive and strenuous activities. The athlete will no longer be able to return to competition in any impact sport, and in the best case he will be capable of enjoying biking, hiking, swimming or other sports that put little stress on the joints. Healing and recovery time until reaching this point is more than three years on average. There is a concerning number of cases for which recovery seems to be elusive after five or more years after the last quinolone pill ingested. Perhaps during the coming years we will see the confirmation of a vast number of cases of permanent disability, or lifelong pains and misery caused by quinolone antibiotics.

Keep in mind this is not written by a medical professional. But as I read the 100+ pages I was totally convinced they are on to something.

so PLEASE, be very careful when a dr prescribes and antibiotic to you. Check if it's one of these quinolone family. As an athlete, I'd strongly suggest you demand a different antibiotic. In fact, in my research I've learned that this family of antibiotics is not intended to be used as a first line of attack, but rather more as a last result if others fail. I wasn't given that option or any information about athletic activity and dangerous side-effects.

I'm now trying to find a doctor who believes quinolone toxicity exists and could possibly be whats wrong with me. Both for peace of mind and also because if that really is what's wrong, then conventional treatment may not be right for me.

ETA: I almost forgot to give credit to Mel. Without Mel's comment on the fluorquinolines I never would have made any connection of my symptoms to the antibiotic.

Disclaimer: I still have no evidence that my symptoms are related to the fq drug, but its scarey enough to put out a general warning just in case.

Thank you all so much for your support. When I posted the other day I was really just having a hard time dealing with the fact that I wouldn't be able to run the Marathon. You wouldn't think that not being able to run a single race could have such a devestating affect on you emotionally, but it did. Thankfully now I am feeling much better. It still sucks, but I am making new plans!! I am going to run in our local half here on Dec 17th, I am going to run the River Run in March, and then I'll be ready to start training for January 2008!! Again, thank you all so much for your well wishes and condolences!!

I am not bailing, but I won't see you guys much until next week. I have got to get packed for this trip to DisneyLand. I am still planning on meeting everyone at Napolini's and will be taking as many pictures as humanly possible of the race on Sunday so I can come back and you can all get to see our runners at around mile 12.

Take Care,
Dana

Sunny - I am so sorry for what you are going through. It is horrible that a doctor would even think of prescribing a drug with those kinds of side effects without first discussing it with the patient, especially with a patient who is an athlete. I wish I had more soothing words. I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am and let you know you aren't the only one frustrated about your situation.

Dana

Sunny - :grouphug: :furious: :grouphug: :furious: :grouphug:
Keep researching and finding answers, ok? And even if this is the case with you (and it very well might not be) - everyone responds to every drug differently - DON'T GIVE UP!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Hello! Someone directed me to this thread, so I thought I'd introduce myself! DH and I are planning on running (or at least walking!) in the WDW half. He is very much a runner, I am NOT. I absolutely HATE running, and yet this crazy thing was my idea :confused3

I made up a really fantastic training plan starting in about February of this year. It was a mixture of several plans, back to back, leading up to being able to run my little heart out the whole time once the race arrived. Well, I'm really not sure how it's September already, but ..... the plan has changed a few times :rolleyes1

At this point, I'm looking forward to finishing. I've been battling some uncontrolled asthma the last few weeks, so my training has been moved entirely indoors -- which makes it harder for me to get done, since we moved 40 minutes from our gym. I know, excuses excuses. But my doctor, DH and I are trying to get my regimine switched, so hopefully I'll be able to step outside again without wheezing around mile 2!

We are currently only doing about 5 miles on average for our long runs, but that is going surprisingly well. My biggest problem is boredom. As I mentioned, I really don't get "into" running, so I just have to picture myself running down mainstreet, and hope it gets here (and over with) quickly! Tha being said, I am learning a lot about myself, and hopefully improving my health at the same time -- which I'm always excited about. :goodvibes

I look forward to having you guys hold me accountable as this weekend quickly approaches!!! I am absolutely inspired at how well some of you do with training... someday I might be there! :)

Have a good afternoon!

Greetings TEAM: Just a quick update from me. I did my 40 min of x-training on the elliptical yesterday. Today I got up and it was raining so I did my 4.5 miles on the treadmill (that distance includes the 0.25 mile warm up and cool downs). Here are my splits:

Mile 1: 10:00 min (6.0 mph)
Mile 2: 10:00 min (6.0)
Mile 3: 9:40 min (6.2)
Mile 4: 9:22 min (6.4)

I felt really comfortable, and my legs are still feeling strong. Shin splints are staying away so far. That's all for now. I will definitely have to catch up with everyone later.

Hello all and any newbies who probably aren't newbies anymore since I've been MIA sooo long!!!

I'm aching to start running...but I'm still sick (BOOOOOOOOO!!!!). I meant to get on the TM this week to start walking...but I have a cat on a feeding tube and between him and me the ones who just keep getting sick....EEEEKKKK! I started my anti-nausea medication when I realized it was indeed offering some relief. I also begain homeschooling last week and today part of that was in my bed (mostly reading and I had a tray that the oldest used as a desk for some stuff. Not the best set up..but it worked!).

Hope all is well with everyone. I may have to talk hubby into a weekend at Disney to be on the WISH cheering crew. Maybe if I wear last years shirt--I'll be recognizable as the only WISHer with the Buddah-belly. ;). We'll have to see about that though.

I'm thinking of setting my sights on the 5K in May (Minnie, I guess). Anyone else doing this. Yes, I know it isn't 13 or 26 miles (that i just typed 30 and 20-sicks..what the heck was I thinking????)...but that would be roughly 6-8 weeks post partum and you bet your bippy I'll be ready to at least walk it.

Anywho--just thought I'd check in.

Anyone care to share how the live WISH reports will work. Will that be this thread or another. I'll probably be in church anyway so it will all be old news once I get home. :(.

Hubby isn't a runner let alone an exerciser--yet he sucked it up and trained with me....sort of. He was out of state at the time. It became all the more important when I had to have knee surgery mid season. He was sucking wind at the end (claims he's the "starter" and I'm the "finisher")...but we finished together. We did run walk though as due to my knee during the season, thoughts of a complete run went out the window early in the season.

I have no idea how I "talked him into it". He asked a question--I made a joking suggestion, next I knew he had entered the half. :confused3 I must figure out that subtle approach so I can get more things. :rotfl2:

Oh yeah--and the best part....he HATES to sweat..with a passion. Yet he agreed to use his legs to travel 13.1 miles. :rotfl:

I don't know you and you don't know me...

but I was bummed completely when I had to bow out of DL. It was all for a very very good reason. I knew it was an extreme possibility b/c I do get soo sick. It didn't make it any easier though. :(

I also cried hysterically in Physical Therapy last year when the Pt woudln't release me to run the full. I could still do the half--but it stung stung stung like you wouldn't believe to be told you couldn't do something you really really wanted to do.

I'm not one big on "exercising" either, traditionally. I danced (ballet mostly) for 18 years, so I was used to "just" doing that. Because that took up all my free time every day (and I enjoyed it), I stayed in fantastic shape with little to no "work". Now I'm getting old  AND I'm not dancing.... so I need to do something. I don't mind things like group fitness classes, etc, but I get so bored running! I don't know what it is...

That being said, I'll do anything for another trip to Disney World! :thumbsup2
Well, you know -- anything within reason. And apparently, the day I decided to sign up for this thing, 13.1 miles was "within reason". I'm starting to think now that there would have been an easier way. On Monday, 5 miles seemed like cake. Today, 35 minutes about killed me :confused3 I guess I'll just have to take it one day at a time, and rely on DH's confidence in me that we'll finish this thing :)

Well we have spent 2.5 days in the parks so far and are taking a quick break since it is getting hot in the afternoons. The morning are still somewhat cool, at least to the Florida people, so the race shouldn't be to bad.

As for training, well the last week and a half hasn't seen any running, just a lot of walking around parks and other tourist things. My calfs are definately feeling the hills of San Diego and the few hills of DL. By the time the race gets here, I should be ready to run.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday and at the race.

Thanks for all the congratulations. The next 7-8 months should be an interesting time. Now to get Billy ready for the addition.

Teaser- race report chapter 1

On Sunday Sept 10th, I completed my third Ironman race in Madison, Wisconsin. It was 55 degrees, raining, windy and quite possibly one of the tougher things I have ever done. I was also planning which Ironman I was going to do next less than 12 hours after finishing this one.

Pre-race- Drove from Syracuse to Buffalo Thurs evening and stayed in a hotel that did park and ride to the airport. Worked out quite well and would definitely use that type of service again. Flew into Chicago, collected the luggage and went to the garage to get the full size rental car I had reserved. They tried giving me a Ford Taurus but we couldn’t get the bike box to fit so I’m less than impressed with the design of the ‘full size’ Ford. Ended up with a Pontiac Grand Prix which is one step up from the Grand Am I drive all the time and also fits the bike box with ease. Headed out from Midway and was in Madison around noon. Illinois sticks it to you on tolls if you are a visitor and don’t have one of their iPass systems- very tourism unfriendly. Checked in at the Sheraton and strolled down to Monona Terrace for race packet pick up. The Gremlin measured it at a little over 2 miles. Beautiful day, upper 70s and sunny. Madison has an incredible network of recreation trails for biking, running, in line skating, etc. Long line for packet pick up, chatted with 1st year and 3rd year med students from Iowa and met someone else staying in the same hotel too. Made a quick trip back to the hotel to change for the Welcome Dinner and then met up with some of the BT crowd at dinner, got a BT tat from Possum, and made plans with Mike/BadgerIronman to meet up for a course tour on Saturday. Afterwards went to State St and used the Ben and Jerry’s Buy one, get one coupon, the only useful sponsor item in the race packet.

Saturday dawned much cooler, windy and a little damp. I woke up at 4 am but didn’t go to the Club Lounge until after 5 when another racer/insomniac showed up too. This was her second go at IM WI having also done it in 2004. Saw her group again off and on all weekend. Put the bike together after Mom got up, got some breakfast, and went to the race site to do the Gatorade swim. I wanted to see the course from the water for sighting purposes and to demo one of the BlueSeventy Helix(500 bones full price) wetsuits. I’ve been having major neck chafing issues with my older wetsuit all summer even on the sprint distance I had done the previous weekend so I was wondering if a different suit would help. After talking with Ben from BlueSeventy, I tried a women’s small when I had been swimming in a women’s medium-small. It felt great, better buoyancy, and didn’t rip my neck at all during a 20 minute swim. I jokingly commented to Ben that I wanted to buy that particular suit that was being used for demos as it had already been stretched out to ease putting it on- he then offered it to me at a price I thought was an absolute steal so I broke one of the cardinal rules of racing(never try anything new race day) and bought the suit and raced in it the next day. Mom thinks it’s lighter, I think it’s more buoyant and fits better.

Rode the bike a little bit more and then went back to Monona Terrace check the equipment in and to meet up w/ the boys(BadgerIronman-local course expert and driver, MUL98, and ladavidson) for the bike course tour. Since I had no opportunity to pre-ride it, it was great to see it from the car and definitely helped on Sunday with race strategy. Basically it boiled down to being hilly and it was obviously a course that would be unforgiving for going too hard, too early. Little did we know that the weather conditions would make that especially true the next day.

Got dinner at a local mall and then off to bed by 10. Woke up at 1 am, dozed til 3 and then was awake until it was time to get up at 5 am. Took the shuttle from the Alliant Energy Center to the race site rather than walking the 2 miles pre-140.6 miles. Dropped off my special needs run bag w/ socks and another long sleeve shirt in it, got body marked, took the garbage bags off the bike and checked it out and then went inside Monona Terrace. Choked down the Stonyfield Farms Mixed Berry Smoothie but couldn’t stomach the roll as it just increased my nausea. At that point, I was chalking feeling like ick up to nerves.(ominous foreshadowing music here…) Put the wetsuit on while still inside and then we headed down to lake level. It was windy and cool but only mostly sprinkling to this point. Got in the water and hung out with 2475, the largest field ever to do an Ironman mass swim start, of my fellow wackos waiting for the cannon at exactly 0700 CST. It was actually raining by this time…

Ohhhhhh, Lynne!!! You are such a great writer!! I am so glad that I will be away from my computer for the next week!!! Hopefully, when I get back, the whole story will be out! Physician, HEAL THYSELF!!! :rotfl2: Hope all of this got you your qualifying time. You are an AWESOME young lady!!! :sunny: Anne

Well Anne- I actually plan on getting the whole Epic up tonight

Part two

The swim- 2.4 miles Lake Monona

The course was in Lake Monona and was a rectangle that we had to swim twice before heading in to transition. Unlike Lake Placid, there is no getting out of the water before starting the second lap, just make the turn and go. This was what I refer to as a Skittles swim- the men were in white swim caps, the women in navy blue and the collegiates in red. Women consisted of 24% of the field so there were a lot more white caps floating around than anything else. I lined up fairly close to the inside and not too far back from the front. I’m not a great swimmer so I didn’t want to get beat up too much by faster people if I was too far forward. Ending up being just about right- got beat up but no worse than any other open water swim I’ve done this year. The difference was that it never really thinned out to clear water and it got particularly tight on some of the turns. It was very windy and there were significant waves for being a lake swim just like Timberman had been 3 weeks prior. All in all, I had the best swim I could for the conditions even though it was almost 10 minutes slower than I had been hoping.

T1

Exited the water and headed to the wetsuit strippers. Had a brief moment of trouble with finding the leash for wetsuit to unzip it(remember that it was a brand new to me wetsuit) before I realized that it was upside down. It zips from the top down so the leash was at the bottom rather than bottom up with the leash at the top like my old wetsuit. Also discovered that the Heart Rate Monitor was been hit into/turned off 49 seconds into the race. For some reason, I decided not to restart it…still don’t have a clue on the ‘reasoning’ behind that one. Ran up the Helix(parking garage ramp) to the transition ballrooms on the 4th floor, got long sleeve shirt, helmet, sunglasses w/ low light lenses, WISH socks, and bike shoes on and off I went to collect my bike. A volunteer rolled it to the center aisle of the bike parking for me and I ran it the rest of the way to the mount line. Total time from mat to mat: 8:58

The bike- 112 miles in southern Wisconsin

The course is lollipop shaped with a 14 mile segment from Madison to Verona, then two trips around a 42 mile loop that goes through Verona, Mount Horab, Cross Plains, and then back to Verona, and then the stick back in to town. You start off riding down the opposite Helix from which you had ran up to get to the transition level and the course doesn’t get any flatter from there. The theme of the bike was rain, wind, and hills.

What went right: set the watch to beep every 15 minutes for nutrition and took in adequate fluids with drinking Gatorade Endurance every time and eating a Gu gel every 45 minutes. For those interested in doing this race, one note on the aid station placement: the first is about mile 10 and then the second isn’t until Mount Horab around mile 30 on the first loop. It came just in time as I was racing minimalist with just one bottle cage, the Profile Design aero front bottle that I actually drank from, and 1-2 gels at a time in my trisuit pockets. There was a water only station at mile 18 but… I also ended up with mostly Espresso Love flavor, one of two(along w/ chocolate) that I prefer not to have. Ate them though. Wasn’t repeating Timberman’s ****oo.

Second thing that went right was the effort level, bike set up. Love, love, love the Zipp 404 tubular wheels is point one for the set up, the second is that I comfortable enough with my aero position to spend considerable time there right up until the end(Thanks to Ian at Fitwerx), and the third was that compact cranks were absolutely the right call for this course on this day. Effort was to always pedal one gear easier than it felt like I could be pushing. May have went a little too easy but… In general I felt pretty darn good for having ridden a hilly 112 miles under windy conditions. I ride enough in the rain and I’m a decent bike handler so the wetness of the roads didn’t bug me much.

OMG- the crowd support on the steepest climbs and coming through Verona were awesome. It was just like being in the Tour w/ people crowding into the road from either side leaving just a couple bike widths wide for the racers. It was still cold, raining, and windy and these people were there for hours just to cheer us on. I have been doing endurance events since I had my Mom(longest running, best jockstrap) sign me up for a 10 K in Missoula as a 13 yo 20 years ago and have never experienced anything like that before in a race.

What when wrong- the nausea and side pain never went away and the nose was running like a freight train. Don’t think in hindsight that I had enough clothes on- should have had leg warmers/tights on my legs and a waterproof layer on top. Got chilled, slowed down maybe(no bike computer and no HRM so no real idea), and it followed me onto the run. Ended up 1 hour slower than I wanted to be and probably ½ hour slower than I should have been with out being chilled to the bone.

Coming back in along the bike path, saw Mom and stopped to chat briefly. Whined about how badly I thought I had done on the swim and bike and how badly I was feeling. Mentioned dropping out at T2…
