Wk of Oct 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Is anyone thinking about doing the 5K family fun run on Friday?
My kids 13 & 11 have gotten the running bug since DH and I are training. They want to do the race. My sis is probably going to do it so they can run/walk with her and we could watch. Any thoughts?
Thanks! :goodvibes

Bill – great job on your back to backs! How is Lynnda feeling?

Lynnda happens to have a cold right now  and being the dutiful wife who likes to share everything she is doing her best to sabotage my training and get me sick. Then she goes and blames Billy about giving it to her first so it isn't her fault.

What is the Mylar Sheet thingy? Is it a blanket? See, I am a new runner!!! Any Pics?

What is the W tent? Winners? Wishers? Do we have our own tent?!?

I love the post race stories. Now I am off to the marathon site to check out the race gear!

I might even check in onthe weight loss thread!

Thanks everyone!!
Nancy

Nancy, let me try to help.....

Mylar sheet thingy: It's a thermal blanket they give you after you finish the race...made out of that material that those shiny silver helium balloons are made of. :teeth: (Sorta). They are supposed to help you retain warmth. I, personally, was plenty warm, but of course kept it and still have mine as a souvineer. :teeth:

W tent: At the finish, there are big lettered signs where you can meet your party after you are done. Usually you'd go by your last name. Now, we being resourceful people decided to try and meet up at the "W" tent (for WISH) after the race. I don't know if we decided about if we are doing that this year. (But we do have a bunch of other meets in the works.....)

And not to toot my own horn, but here's a pretty nifty post-race report from last year ;)
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1041919

Hope that helps!
Kevin :earsboy:

ETA: Oops, almost forgot, just back from my run-- 4 miles in 37:00; 9:15/mile pace.... at least I'm consistant.

Rest day for me today. I did 2.22 on the TM yesterday in 31:05. I've been trying to increase the TM speed so that it more closely matches my outdoor speed.

Nancy...the castle medals came from the DL half last month. There should be a DL thread somewhere with photos.

Minnie...yep, know Lido well. That's our 'Key West'...everyone goes out there to watch the sunset. You may catch a wedding or two while you're there. Let me know what your schedule is and we'll figure out a time to hangout!

Kevin...yep...always meet at the W tent after the race. I'm in the 'won't believe it til I see it' mode for the packets. Mine didn't come last year til almost Thanksgiving!

Krista...I just joined a girly fantasy football league online :rotfl: Nothing like starting out midseason  . It's done by one of the drug companies...only a little bit insulting. It's http://www.herfootball.com

Judy...after the half was cold. I stopped by the food tent for post-race snacks, looked for the fam, stumbled to the W tent. I think there were a couple WISHers there (Heather? Lynne?), then waited for others to arrive. DD3 was cold and wanted to be picked up. Did so and almost fell over myself, so I wrapped her in mylar sheet thingy and sat on the ground. DD13 was doing the Chicken Little 5K, so we hung around until then. It was cold...there was a nasty cold wind that day.

Bill... :wizard: to keep away nasty viruses.

Dave...hope you had a safe trip back.

Anne...hope you're doing okay with the 'family drama'.

Carrie...glad your FIL is doing okay. I need to email you about scrapbooking stuff.

Anyone ready to go back into planning mode? I've been thinking it may be time to resurrect the 'meet' threads. Not sure much needs to be said since we're not making ressies this year...maybe just confirm current plans with everyone?

I was plenty warm too. I belive my thougths were more like, "I don't care if I don't need it,. I've just run a marathon and I'm taking the blanket!" lol.

Nancy - There's a link to my report too!

I di dleave out that I saw Krista adn Steven at teh W adn they took a family pic for me that I cherish!

Oh and when we went ot go to the bus line on our return trip, it looked liek things were winding down. I was going to die if I had to go all th way back to the regular Epcaot busses. We got within a couple hundred feet and a CM came towards us to cut us off. My heart sank! I waanted to cry. The CM loosk at us and says, "Where ya' headed?" We toll him and he radio'd for a bus just for us!!!! Talk about being treated like hero. NOw we didi have out medals, but we were in street clothes, so he knew we had already been back, Then again, if you saw our hobbles, yuo'd feel sorry for us too!

I love to reminisce too! Can you tell?

Depends on which day it was. After the half last year, I was freezing! I needed everything I could get my hands on, including the space-age blankie! The full was completely the other extreme because I was too warm (expecting it to be cold again, I over-dressed).

Today was 4 miles. It was not fun, one of those runs that your legs start hurting about 10 feet into the run. It didnt help that I was starting out uphill for a mile. Needed extra walk breaks on that one! There were a couple of times that I was questioning why "shorter" runs are more difficult than the longer ones. My 10 miler Saturday was a breeze compared to today's run. When it started getting rough, I thought of my training partners on the WISH board, and I knew I had to finish the run so I wouldn't let anyone down. Don't have a time for todays run because of Garmin troubles. It didnt even lock satellites for about a mile.

Add another guy to the "needs to lose weight before Disney" thread. I know that during training is not the time to diet because you need all the carbs and energy that you can get, but I think if I just eat healthy and avoid the empty calories (like the jar of Skittles on my desk at work) then the weight will come off. But I will post more on that thread.

Next event is the Duke City 1/2 marathon this Sunday. Going to try and treat it like a training run, but we'll see how the race energy affects me.

Come on packets! :Pinkbounc :dance3: :bounce:

Happy training everyone. Stay healthy and injury-free.

Paul

Hey all! Did 3 miles today--ave. 10:10 per mile. Hearing all the talk about last year's marathon makes me wish we were going this year--but it's not in the budget since we've already planned our trip in April--but next year we'll be there as well.

Hi Mel,

Sounds great -- I'd love to confirm everything. :) Is it that Friday that we will be meeting at POR?

:teeth: I'm always ready to talk Disney :thumbsup2 . Hect, I've already packed things away for the weekend :woohoo: . Hey, to the folks that have already been there previous marathon weekends? Do you think I should still pack some shorts (for during the day)? Or should I just forget about them? :confused3

I'm so disappointed :guilty: I didn't get to train last night! But I plan to do it tonight :teeth: .

So Dave, are you ready for that half? Excited? Nervous? Now that I look back on all of the things that I was nervous about last weekend and it is kind of funny! You are going to have such a great time! What great scenery too!

Cam - Are you the Diser whos husband put all of the stuff from the Disney Marathon in a shadowbox? If you are, can you please show it again? DH and I are thinking about putting our stuff from the past weekend in a shadowbox,.....You know since we both ran :goodvibes

Hi Jodi :wave2: I am excited for the half at Niagara Falls. I can't wait. I need to get organized since getting back from my meeting in Atlanta, but I think I'm all ready. My training hasn't been so great because of my trip, but I got two 6 mile runs in. I'm thinking it's a "taper" week for the half anyway.

MelR- You were asking if I was breaking the news this weekend. No, I'm planning on doing it NEXT weekend. I'll run the half this weekend. Hopefully, that will go OK, and then I'm going to take DW out on a date night just ourselves and break the news to her. I still don't plan on telling the princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, until Christmas time.

Jodi - definately bring shorts to possibly wear during the day. We've been going to WDW for the marathon since 2002. Some years we use them, some we don't. So, I bring a little bit of everything!

I will never forget the January we had to go out & buy gloves and scarves! We each only brought a light jacket, so each day we layered a T-shirt, a sweatshirt (or 2), then our jackets. Then we added our new gloves & scarves. We looked like stay-puff marshmallow men! :rotfl: The was alot of hot chocolate drinking that trip!

Other Januarys, we've been able to take a mid-afternoon dip in the pool. So, you do really never know.

Good thing we are driving this year - I can pack the minivan with all sorts of different clothes! :drive: My theory is that if we bring the scarves & gloves, we won't need them! ;)

Nancy – I learned last year (thanks to all my WISH buddies, including Craig (Calcio)) that I could take all those negative comments from everyone and let them fuel my determination. It helped me to think about proving them all wrong and also to do something that none of them was going to do. The fact was that at the end of the day, I had a big, honkin’ Donald medal and they didn’t. After that, who cares?

I know Kevin answered your questions, but here’s more stuff on that:

The mylar blanket was a huge, very thin mylar sheet printed with the marathon weekend logo. They wrap them around athletes at the end of endurance events – I can only guess at the physiological reasons one needs them. But it is interesting how you can be hot and sweaty coming over the finish and shivering just moments later. It made a fabulous souvenir and now we have one from DL too. :teeth:

At the finish area there are “family tents” that are marked with alphabet letters so that athletes and their families can find each other. We all planned and met at the “W” tent for WISH. My memory of DL is much clearer than WDW ;) but what I remember is how good it made me feel to know that there were people waiting to congratulate me, either at the FINISH or at the tent. And I was so overwhelmingly grateful that people who had been finished for a while stuck around to cheer on and congratulate the later finishers (like me).

Bill – please give my love and a hug to Lynnda. I am sure she is susceptible to every germ coming down the pike right now. Make sure she takes her vitamins. I hope you and Billy can stay healthy (then you can dote on her  ) :grouphug:

Jodi – Definitely pack shorts. Even when the temperature wasn’t very warm, the sun was, and we were glad to be in shorts a couple days. Then again, there was the day I had on a long sleeved tee shirt and a sweatshirt and jeans. My character pix from one day are me in shorts and a tee shirt and sandals. The day before that we were in jeans and sweats. Very funny. Personally, I am going to take any chance I can get to wear shorts in January! :teeth: Just check out the picture from the Trails End WISH meet – I think I am the only one in shorts.

Oh, and Howard didn’t do the shadow box. It may have been Carrie and Scott. My medals are on a shelf in my closet and getting worn down from all the rubbing and drooling I do to them. Each of them is such a treasure to me and I love touching them and looking at them. I did order the framed Donald with my name, finish time and “First ½ Marathon” so I have a second Donald medal in my office that is on my credenza across from my desk. It reminds me that I can accomplish anything if I work hard enough.

My post-marathon events were the same as the others upto getting on the bus. After the bus I took a "cool soak" (the water wasn't ice cold like Mass. water). Put on my bathing suit and took DS(5) swimming. Dx left for Boston around 3PM. I took DS to MK and we stayed until closing. It was very painful getting on and off of rides, but I really believe swimming and then walking around all night aided in my recovery. I was still sore but not awfully sore on Monday and fine by Tuesday.

Here's my marathon report: http://livinglively.com/WDW2006.htm

Sunny

Hi everyone!! Yesterday was xt day, so that means today I have a sore booty. How long does it take to get used to a bike seat? I was supposed to do 40 minutes, but I just did 30 instead. I had been sitting in traffic for about 45 minutes before I got to the Community Center, so I was just ready to go home. I have got to find a different commute, these 40-50 minute drives are getting old! Oh, I have good news about the leg press (at least Sunny will understand) I did my 30 presses at my usual 75 lbs and it felt too light!! :woohoo: :woohoo: I'm definitely adding more weight the next time I lift.

Jodi--We have the shadowboxes, I'll post a picture when I get home tonight. And pack those shorts!! This past year we were at WDW from Jan 6-14, marathon weekend was chilly and we were wearing pants, long sleeves, jackets, hats, etc, but by Monday a warm front came through and we were wearing shorts and t-shirts and swimming in the pools.

Mel--I checked out that site, you're right it's only a little insulting. I did laugh out loud on the faq's section--"How long does a football game last?" :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Bill--Isn't it nice to have such a loving and considerate spouse who shares everything? :wizard: :wizard: that Lynnda and Billy are feeling better and may the Force be with you. :yoda:

I was going to say more, but now I forget. Grrr!! I'm sure I'll be back later when I think about it. :teeth:

Kaaaaayaaaanooooos.......and they're wiiiiiiiiide.......YAY!

They were waiting for me when I got home last night. Since today was a rest day all I did this morning was have my coffee while I sat and admired them. I can't wait to try them out tomorrow!! :yay:

Kevin - Ohhh, I like your post-race plan. Especially the champagne part! I usually don't drink but this is an Occasion!! :goodvibes

Melissa - Ha! That's a great story! :thumbsup2 I got this this morning Him: "So, how far have you gone?" Me: "I did 4 1/2 miles Saturday." Him: "THAT'S IT? Man, you'll never make it." I can't type here what I wanted to say to him. I actually just said nothing. :furious:

Carrie - Ha ha ha! :lmao: I am the Queen of Comedy? Me? Ha ha ha! Ohh thanks for the lyrics. I especially like the "Sometimes I can be stupid" part. Yes, yes, I was thinking that I'll have to stretch like a madwoman. And get in the pool. Yes, I was thinking that too. And eat. Yes eat. And perhaps even eat again.

Nancy - "you couldn't do it for 2 1/2 freaking hours!" I LOVE THAT! :rotfl2: It cracked me up for some reason. I'll think of it next time someone says something STOOPID.

Cam - "big honkin' Donald medal" - OMG! :rotfl: Ha ha ha! I'm going to think of that too! You guys give me all the inspiration, motivation AND ammunition I could ever need! :thumbsup2 Who did you order the framed medal with your time and First 1/2 Marathon on it? Is that something WDW offers or did you have it done?

OK I better get my big old booty (to use Krista's term) over to the Weight Loss thread that now looks so huge I'll never get caught up!

Okay, because I am totally unmotivated at work I went through my old posts and found where I orginally posted the shadowbox picture. So, here it is:
