In-room Coffee makers, the Ultimate Thread

For me, it's partly perception, I guess. Older style of coffee maker plus it's what is at the value and moderate hotels, so the cuisinart seems out of place at GF, which bills itself as the Flagship Resort. If the type of coffee maker was random rather than organized by resort tier, it might not seem like such a glaring mismatch.

I'd always prefer a drip coffee maker if I had the choice.

I never really look at brown Keurig water as being any kind of upgrade.

Ummm,,, have you looked at how a Keurig makes coffee? It is essentially a drip coffee maker. If it's the choice of coffee beans that fails you they also have a simple pod into which you place your own grounds.

Well, I like a good size cup of coffee.

I find in a Keurig the 6 oz setting comes out pretty good, when you move to the 8 oz it's weak coffee and when you go to the 12oz setting, which is the one I want, it really is just brown water.

And that’s why the Cuisinart machines are a definite downgrade from the Keurig Duos. Duos have both a Keurig side and a standard drip coffee side, letting people who prefer one over the other make their own choice about what and how to brew. And the Cuisinart requires those little pseudo-drip packets, making crappy coffee for both types of coffee drinkers. ;-)

Personally, the Keurig machines work better for me than drip as I am the only coffee drinker and rarely have more than one cup, and they do have a DIY drip insert that you can get to be able to load your preferred grounds. I just tend to bring my own preferred pods, but you could absolutely bring one of the inserts and your own grounds to use in a non-Duo Keurig.

Updated Summary (realized I was missing Aulani)

Value - Cuisinart flat pods

Moderate - POR, POFQ, CBR - Cuisinart flat pods
Moderate - CSR - Keurig single-cup machines

Deluxe - Keurig single-cup machines
** Big Pine Key @ GF still has Cuisinart flat pod machines

Swan/Dolphin - Mr Coffee (flat pods)
Swan Reserve - Keurig single cup machines

Large CL suites at Deluxes - may have both a Keurig & a Nespresso)

Deluxe Villas - GFV, PVB, BRV, BWV, BCV, VRB, AKL-J, C@FW, HHI, VB - Keurig Duos in most villas (studios may have single cup Keurigs)
Deluxe Villas - SSR, OKW, AKL-K - regular coffee makers - 4 cup basket in studios, 8 cup basket in larger villas
Deluxe Villas - CCV - conflicting reports, some rooms have old style basket coffee makers, some have Keurigs
Deluxe Villas - RIV - most rooms have old style basket coffee makers, Tower Studios have Keurigs
Deluxe Villas - BLT - conflicting reports, some rooms have old style basket coffee makers, some have Keurigs but villas are just starting a refurb, so the assumption is that new rooms will have Keurig Duos

Aulani - larger villas seem to be in the process of having Keurig Duos replace the older basket style coffee makers; still working on getting confirmation of type for hotel rooms and studios; however, you might be able to request a Keurig from housekeeping if you don’t have one when you arrive now that the resort has them in at least some of the rooms

Was excited when I saw Nespresso,,but only for CL,,,so guess I am still bringing my own.
Anyone know if you can request one to be brought to a 1bdrm at BW?

One bedroom DVC villa, likely not. One bedroom CL suite on the Inn side, likely but probably already has one. Either way, can’t hurt to ask mousekeeping if one is available. Please post back here to let us know how it goes.

Thanks - please update the link in post #1 when you can!

Reporting that our GFV resort room in Big Pine Key still had Cuisinart pod machine as of 9/21/24.

I’ve edited the summary in post 35 to reflect the unsatisfactory coffee situation at Big Pine Key.

Well darn it, I'll be at a room in VGF's BPK and planned on bringing K-Cups of my fave coffee, as I usually do. Do these work in the Cuisinart Pod machines? I googled but had no luck.

A K-Cup will not work in a pod machine
Gotcha, thanks for the pic! This type of coffee pod is all new to me. We use nespresso pods at home, but I also have k-cups for when I travel. I see that I can buy my fave in this form, but it's a pack of 150, which is way too much!

I will stick with my plan to inquire with BPK mousekeeping to see if any Keurig machines are available. I have had luck with this while staying in a 1 bedroom at CCV. I will report back!

@NickC That Handpresso looks awesome! I clicked on the link to learn more about it. But what made you decide on the Handpresso versus something else like the Nanopresso machines on Amazon? And do you bring your own ground coffee? Or use the ESE pods?

Not sure if it’s your thing, but I recently found out that Seattle’s Best Post Alley ground coffee is ground really fine, too fine for my pour over but really great for my Moka pot!

I bought mine about 5 years ago. It was $54.99 when I bought it. It seems to have jumped up in price a lot. The Nanopresso seems to be much more competitive. If my Handpresso broke, I'd have to put some thought into which route I'd take to replace it.
I am using the ese pods. There is also a little filter basket that came with it, but I don't really use it. I like Neapolitan espressos....Caffe Moreno and Kimbo. They aren't always the easiest to find in bulk so I purchase them when I see them.

Oh wow. $54.99. It’s more than double that now at $117.35. It’s like DVC, the best time to buy was before.

The ESE pods do seem a lot more travel friendly and less likely to confused TSA. And I love a bolder, richer espresso so I’ll definitely check out your recs. Thank you!
