Wk of Oct 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I have no training to report. But I did have a wonderful weekend!

Carrie & Speedy-- I encountered snow... but I had to go up 6,000 feet to get there (unfortunately I didn't do the work, a cog rail train did)

Here's the train that climbed:

Here's Paul on the summit

Here's me on the summit. The wind knocked Paul over, but notice the HIKER behind teh sign. It was 15deg F with minus windchill

For comparison, here's a picture taken at the bottom of the mountain just about an hour earlier (~50 deg F):

Here's me during the only exercise I go (1 hour walk):

One last pic I just have to share.

To my surprize, at the top of the mountain was a weather panel displaying my very own work! Unfortunately, I didn't capture it. This is a display of NOAA weather satellite imagery. The Top second from left is a GOES image (same as you see on the news), the bottom right was a POES satellite image, but by the time I took the picture it switched to another image. I work on the POES satellites. How cool to see it right there! Most of my co-workers work on the GOES, they get all the glory

OK, I'll stop chewing up bandwidth now ;)

Awesome pics, Sunny! Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to go up and do the Cog railway myself - haven't done that since I was in grade school. Hmm, maybe I should play hookey this week...

And does that mean my weather guys use your graphics? If so, VERY cool!

Hello All!
I have been wanting to join you, but thought I'd wait til I was in a commited training mode. I am now!
DH and I have been running since January.
We are following MFM walk/run plan for the WDW Half in Jan 07.
We only modified so that our long runs were on Sunday and our rest days were on Mon and Thurs.
It was so hard to get to the gym on the weekdays since we have 3 kids (13, 11, 7) I seem to spend more time driving the van full of kids than anything else!
We'll be doing the Half Marathon, with my Dad (63!) and my Best Friend and her DH.

Today we ran 4 miles in 50 minutes.

My biggest hurdle is that I am a cry baby. About once every long run, I want to quit or I say I don't want to go to Disney!! But I always finish.

Dh is keeps me going!

I am struggling with my eating and fluid intake for running and hope to figure it all out soon.

July 4th was our first race -- 5K
Last month we did a 10 K. It took amost 90 minutes and was a disaster from a 45 min. late start to no water til Mile 3! UGH! But I got a medal -- 2nd place in my age division, okay so there we only 2 women age 40-45, but hey I was there right?!?!?!? :goodvibes

Anyway, Can I join your group? I think it would really help me stay focus and give me a place to ask questions.

Thanks! Nancy

Sunny - great pictures. I use to live in Lincoln, NH and have been on the cog rail, great ride. I love that area in the fall!

Good morning everyone :sunny:

I'm back :sad2: it was 88 on Saturday and arrived home to 55 - yuck!

Had an absolutely wonderful magical time :goodvibes

We were one of the 1st on the AP soft opening at the new Finding Nemo ride :thumbsup2

Awesome trip. Hope to catch up soon.

The Cog Railroad is quite expensive! Your weather guys use GOES imagery. I workon POES (Polar Orbting Environmental Satellites). They never get any press. But they monitor things like global sea surface tempratures, help make predictions on el nino, track the ozone layer (or lack thereof) and carry a Search and Rescue beacon that receives distress signals from ships at sea. Hundres of ships have been rescued from this system. They also collect buoy data and transmit it ito ground stations. They are very important-- but no body knows about them! They're the behind the scenes satellites.

Here's yet another off-topic tidbit: Mt. Washington has measured the fastest wind speed in the history of windspeed measurments. I believe it was 1984 or 1994, 240 mph!

I'm so tired, I dont know how I"ll get training in today.

Greetings all. :sunny:

What a weekend! Combine a 17yo stepson with a brand new license and a newly acquired Cherokee....ugh, our collective nerves.

I am anxiously awaiting my new Kayanos...in WIDE. :teeth: Today I did 45 min on the TM at 3.8 in my old NB cross trainers. Grrrr. Well, DH will enjoy $250.00 worth of my stupid mistakes. :rolleyes2

I did wear the Saucony's on my LR Sat. They weren't too bad. I think my Garmin in whacky. It was all over the place on Saturday. I was doing a 17 min walk and a 10 min walk at the same pace. Make up your mind, Garmin! Anyway, my second mile split was 11:30. I was running for that mile (And a half actually) so maybe it's possible, but I am hard pressed to believe it. :confused3 I accidentally did 4.5 miles because I was so busy watching my pace that I forgot to look at distance and apparently I didn't hear the alarm either. I was only supposed to do 4. I have been adding an extra mile to my MfM LRs.

Speaking of alarms....honestly, one of these days I'm going to get put away. I set my Pace Alarm, and it kept telling me to speed up. So while I'm trotting down a residential street on a Saturday morning, all the people working in their front yards raking leaves heard this crazy woman telling her wrist to "shut up", "stop nagging me", "OK OK"! Then finally..."Thats it! I'm turning you off!"

:offtopic: I finished watching Brokeback Mountain on the TM this morning. Nobody told me that movie should come with a medical warning...."Caution: Will cause severe pains in the heart, occasional crying and general malaise for some time after viewing." OMG what a movie. :sad2:

Jodi & Bob - Know that I know you both personally :teeth: ...WAY TO GO! :thumbsup2 You guys totally rock! :cheer2:

Kelly - WOW! You really book!

Ohhh Matt - I was hoping for better news from you. :wizard: But, umm, way to go DW!!

Hey Kevin - Going to a running store would work too but I got my best pick-me-up at the gynecologist last week! HA HA HA! :lmao: Holy cow you're fast! I guess I'll have to wait until we get back from WDW to see pictures of you cause NO WAY will I see you on the course!

Kristi - Ahhhh, THAT'S your BF...I get it now. :cloud9:

Susie - Here's my two cents on rest days.....I know exactly how you feel about not wanting to rest, but my advice is...do it. :goodvibes Resting IS part of the training. I know how worrisome doing nothing for a day is, but I got over that. You need to also. Your body need to rest and repair itself.

Sunny - COOL! I'd love to take that cog train up there! What an amazing difference in the weather! And you must be very proud to see your own work up there! Very nifty! :smooth: The work you do sounds very interesting.

Nancy - :welcome:

Minnie - Welcome back! :yay: Pictures! Pictures! We need pictrues!

Cam? Cam??? You out there? :confused3

Morning all!!

Escape-- I think that type of easy walking is fine, and might even aid in recovery a bit. That said, as you get increase your mileage, make sure you take some off days and get adaquate rest... you body needs it and will thank you for it.

Bill-- Thinking this through, there HAS to be someone slower than me. Maybe I'll recruit one of our "bigger" football coaches to run. Yeah, that's the ticket.....

Disneyfanz-- Great job with the run. You're doing great!! Don't worry about being as good as anyone else... just be as good as yourself! :thumbsup2

Nancy-- :welcome: There are some great question answerers here, so ask away!!

Judy-- We'll just have to do a pre-dawn pre-corral meet before the half then :teeth:

Crosstraining day here, which I will take care of later. After my run yesterday I got to thinking about my race goals for this year. According to the math, if I held my 10 mile pace during the half, I would come in at 2:00:55. (See where this is going.....???) 56 seconds faster and I can crack two hours. So the multi-million dollar question I am kicking around is this-- is it possible to run a sub 2 hour half (or try to) and then come back and run a sub 4:30 full the next day? I'm trying to decide if it's a totally crazy idea... Please advise!!

OK, better get back to work...
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Just a quickie on the wave start for the half.

Wave C will be those folks who anticipate finishing 2:45 to 3:30. I sent in mine and DD's RftT times to try to move us up, but no luck. See y'all in Wave C!

OK, so I went to the gym this morning and did a mile...just for fun...and did it in 11:30 WOOHOO under 12 GO ME GO ME :woohoo: :woohoo:

Now I have a question for all of you...

I am starting to have severe doubts about this marathon...I don't know why...is this normal??? Then there are times where I am like this is going to be no problem...UGH...I am making myself sick about it...and we still have 2 1/2 months... ...I mean I know I can do it, but the thought of the pace is what keeps popping in my head...I will be SO disappointed with myself if I don't finish!!! :guilty: What do you say to yourself to reassure yourself that you can and will finish??? Thanks for listening to my vent!!

Hey Kevin,

A 10 mpm pace is just over 2:10 for a half marathon. I know, I have been trying to break that 5 times now! :wave2:

First off, WOO HOO!!! :cheer2:

Secondly, I feel that way all the time - like I am crazy for even thinking I can do 13.1 miles. I promise you, you will do it! And during a race, it is SO much easier. There is so much going on, people to talk to, music, sights to see.

Disneyfanz- Absolutely normal. Kristi is absolutely right... it's much easier come race day. With continuing to train you will build up your confidence, I promise. :thumbsup2

Whoops.... should have been clearer. :) I was referring to the pace I ran my 10 miler yesterday, which was 9:14/mile.

Well, I am just back from Dr Hunka-Hunka Burning Love. (That's my incredibly handsome orthopedic surgeon, in case you didn't know)

The good news is he didn't see anything in the x-rays of my knees. Very very little arthritis, but he said probably too little for me even to feel. He is sending me for am MRI though, because I mgiht have a cartalidge tear.

And that is the good news.

The bad news is....well....I'm fat. :guilty:

My excess weight is probably stressing my knees causing fluid and swelling.

Ugh.

But, it's not like I didn't know that already.

Disneyfanz- I believe what those guys are saying is true. I'm banking on it. Plus, we can all just draft on Kevin since he will be moving at the speed of sound. :worship:

Judy, We've got to get serious about this weight issue. I am taxing my spine for the very same reason. I ate like a pig this weekend. We were celebrating our 20th "un"anniversary (since we actually divorced but it would be the 20th). But that is just no excuse :confused3

So I'm off to the store after work to stock up on core foods again  I'd really like to be the same weight I was last year (jan '06) for Goofy this year. Well... I'd really like to be 20 lbs lighter than that, but that would be a pipe dream.

Let's do it! :cheer2:

Factoid correction: My hearing isn't too good. I looked up the facts on Mt. Washington and discovered the world record wind was 231 mph on April 12, 1934 not 1984!!!!

Cool site if you're into weather type stuff, or thinking of hiking it: Mt. Washington

YES!

Oh please, I had no excuse this weekend except the stepkids were up. Friday night - Chocolate cream pie. Saturday - Mrs Fields Cookies at the mall. Sunday - Apple pie ala mode. Ugh.

OK I will go to the store too and buy THE RIGHT THINGS. I guess I took last week's post about not trying to lose weight while training a little too much to heart.

I KNOW I can do this. I lost 30 pounds in 2004 on WW. I know it works. I'm not looking to do that in the next 81 days but ANYTHING would be an improvement.

OK Sunny. We're in this together. :thumbsup2

SUNNY AND JUDY!!! I am with you. I desperately want to lose another 20 pounds before January. I still have more to lose after that, but with the increased mileage I can really feel the strain on my knees. I need to get the weight off. I bought some Core foods this week and plan to grocery shop some more tonight. WE CAN DO THIS!!!!

I am in with you guys too...I would love to be at goal for the marathon :cloud9: , but even if I can't make that, then 20lbs lighter would be fantastic!!!! :cool1:
