Wk of Mar 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Just wanted to jump in and say Hi.

Dave That picture was freakin' hilarious, boy have i had some of those days!!

Well, today I ran 3 miles around the track at the gym. This is the farthest I have run in a while and my calves were killing me by the time I was done. Thankfully I could hop in a really cold shower to help get rid of the pain, and hopefully lessen it some for tomorrow. I did pretty good though, 3 miles in 27.19. That's like a 9min 7sec mile. Not too bad if I do say so myself!! Well, off to get the kids to bed. I'll check back in tomorrow.

Dana

wbgirl - Welcome. I was a newbie last year was my 1st anything. The only running I did was between the couch & fridge during commercials. So just start moving and you will do fine.

Cingoutload - Hey I was 347 lbs 15 months ago so if I can do it anyone can. Welcome you will love it here.

Mel - GREAT TIME!! :cool1:

Claire - I will am trying to keep a list, if only to keep me from going nuts with all of us here.

Liz - :rotfl2: :rotfl2: We have coyotes here too, I can so see me being just the same.

Maharae - Guess I have WAY too much time on my hands, but I was at work, it was dead so what better way to spend the employers money - making DIS lists :cheer2:

Craig - thanks for heads up on dinner, I would hate to waste good sleep time waiting in line.

Krista - I love your baby - we had a Black Lab and he was the best guy.

Nancy :grouphug: for the injections

Jodi - Sorry for the loss :grouphug:

Kevin - try some chicken soup, nothing like it

I think I am finally past some roadblock, I can all of a sudden do 5 miles at a 3/2, 4.0 / 5.5. I feel so great almost like a real runner :rotfl2:

I also had a great conversation with a guy who is very very heavy. He noticed that I was there everday and one of the trainer told him about my having lost 160 lbs. He asked me to help him out, teach him to run :rotfl2: OK After I got back up off the floor, I figured what better way to keep my faithful to the gym than helping someone who was where I was months ago.

HMMM Maybe I can recruit him here or for the 1/2?!?!??

Here is what I did tonight at the gym:
20 minutes elliptical
wogged my fastest mile ever at 13 1/2 minutes (I forgot my timer so I had to use the clock, I think the time was pretty close)
10 minutes cross trainer
5 minutes of various weights

I was stoked at how quick I wogged that mile. I have been using the treadmill at home lately because Wisconsin winters are not the best for jogging in (lots of snow and ice). So I wogged the track at the gym tonight just to see where I was at, naturally not being forced by a treadmill. The gym and track were crowded, so I was weaving a bunch. Now I just need to crank out 13 of those miles!!!

Wbgirl & Cingoutloud - I am new at this jogging thing with the hope of jogging the 1/2 marathon. I have wanted to do it since before I had kids... now I am 33 (34 in May) and still carrying way too much excess PG weight (230). So my hope is that I can lose 50 pounds and finish this 1/2 marathon!! Hope to see you two there!!!!

Dave - LOVE the pic. Just pretend you have lots of upper body muscles!!!

MickeySP - 160 pounds lost. That is fantastic and a total inspiration. Is the DL 1/2 your first race? How did you get started with jogging??

OK, need to get off the puter and get something done at home.

A little bummed tonight. The official race results are posted and they have me listed at 3:05:05...my CLOCK time, not my CHIP time (I certainly was NOT the first runner off the line at the start). I realize that 2 or 3 minute difference probably doesn't mean much in the scheme of the whole marathon, but it sure means a lot to me, so I may just use my Garmin as my 'official' time in my brain.

Welcome cingoutload! Congrats on your 4.5!

Welcome Melissa (that makes 3 :) ) Best tip is get the right shoes! Check out the marathon FAQ for a lot of good info for first-timers!

Welcome Dana! :yay: Congrats on the 3 miles!

Wtg Jen on 13.5!

Dave... :rotfl2:

Cam...we'll be there for a daytrip on 4/2, but looks like we'll miss you. I could try to convince DH we actually need to go up on 4/1 instead and spend the night, but we'll be there the following weekend for a conference.

Krista...great pic of you and Hines! He seems a much bigger boy than when we first met him. Love your purple drapes...we have some too!

I'm on R&R until my leg settles down. Ankle did very well, but there's a quad that's not happy with me today. I may just take the week off to recover since we're out of town this weekend. We're thinking about moving north, so going up to look at some property. Of course, one of the reasons we left Gainesville after I finished school was because it was too cold up there ;)

Okay. Haven't checked in today and there's no way I can catch up on everybody. But I'll do my best :).

But first....I did my 60 minutes of kickboxing today and kicked the you know what out of the bags. It was super intense....lots of kicking and leg work. I felt my calf tighten at one point and thought I stretched it out. But...as the day wore on my calf got tighter. I iced up tonight...just hoping it doesn't prevent me from running tomorrow. I'm sure it's fine...just a tight muscle....but I sure don't need a calf injury :guilty: .

Anyway, I feel pretty good about yesterdays hilly run...2.7 miles, averaged 10.8 per mile. I seem to be pretty consistently ranging from 11.3 to 10.8. Not sure if I'll just settle into that pace or if my time will improve as I get more steps in? Either way it works if I can go the distance! I'm going to try a flatter run next sunday just to see how it compares...I get to move up to 3 miles :teeth: . Slowly but surely!

Mel: Go with your garmin. No fair that they didn't use your chip time. Regardless, sounds like you had a great race and awesome time! Sure hope that quad feels better soon. I don't blame you....rest is definitely deserved!

Dave: :rotfl:

Jen: :cheer2: awesome job on the mile!

MickeySP: :thumbsup2 . I agree....you really are an inspiration! How awesome that you are now a coach! Soooo cool!!!

Dana: Wow...great pace! :woohoo:

Cingoutload: Hi!!! Welcome to the group and fantastic job on your 4.5 miler. It sounds like you really are well on your way to the Half!!!

Cam-All this time I thought you were a sweet person. Now I found out your evil making me want to do another trip without my family. :p I would love to slowly explore Epcot with you , I've never slowed down & just taken everything in. If I told DH I wanted to do another WDW trip this year without the family, first he would laugh then he would just walk away without saying anything. I told him since I am doing all these trips we cant afford to do a family vacation this year so we are just going to go to Visionland. (Its a small, not so great amusement park in Birmingham,AL :teeth: ) He was not amused.

Mel-So sorry they didnt do your chip time. Go with what you know you did. And umm, Gainsville~too cold?!?! :rotfl:

Jen-congrats! Thats an awesome pace :cheer2:

Dave-that was hilarious! :rotfl2: Red is your color.

Welcome to all the newbies!!!!! Glad to have you here. Right now everyone is training to train. Just put in those steps & you will have no problem making it in 2007! Check out the websites at the beginning of the thread. Alot of us use the Marathoning for Mortals book by John Bingham. Very doable training plan for walking or running the 1/2 or the full. Its also a good read. He's a normal person turned runner so you can relate easily.

Cingoutload-I see your from N. of Atlanta. Glad to see someone kind of in my area. I'm originally from Marrietta! I live in Huntsville, AL now.(only 3 1/2 hrs away) Have you been to the new aquarium yet? It is worth the big bucks? My son is training to do the Ironkids triathon in Marrietta this year. I think its in September.

Sunny-that is so great you can spend that time with DS. Mine has gotten interested in all the things I'm doing too. I love it because he is not into team sports so this keeps him active. He is doing a kids Marathon in April & hoping to do Ironkids tri in Sept. He is currently saving up for a kids road bike

Go out of town a few days and there 12 pages of posts! I am not even going to pretend I was able to read! Very busy so quick post!
Still training for tri. It is this Saturday! send :wizard: because I need them!
Hope everyone is well! I will tri to catch up later!

Morning Everyone,

Wow, it really makes a difference when you don't make it to the gym - I feel horrible. Well, last night.....I didn't make it because of the wake that I had to go to but I have full intentions of going to the gym tonight.

Made my first $25.00 contribution for the Breast Cancer run that I will be doing in May (5k run). Still trying to find out from work if it is acceptable to send an e-mail form to some of my friends who work at the company. After all, it is going to a good cause. It's amazing how flaky people are though - one of my friends had written an e-mail to me yesterday saying that she would also contribute but hasn't......I'm not upset that she didn't, I'm more upset that she felt that she had to lie about it to me.

My one friend that contributed already, had sent me an e-mail about a fundraiser that she is doing for a women that we used to work with, her daughter needs a bone marrow transplant and they are looking for people to donate money as well as get tested to be a possible donor.....I will definetely give money to that. The daughter is adorable (only 2 1/2 years old).

Well, gotta run (at work you know). Have a great day everyone!

Jodi

Morning team - we did no exercise yesterday as my dh had to work too late.

But plan to do 4 miles again tonight. we are trying to at least do 3 or 4 miles every other day.

Thank you for all the big Hellos! I've read the other websites in my lurking mode, but those work outs just feel to heavy for me right now. I can only do an 18 minute mile average right now walking/jogging..... more walking than jogging.

so....... MickeySP - I can't believe you lost that much weight in such a short amount of time. I feel like I've hit such a plateu and totally agree with that article posting over the weekend. All the workouts make me sooooo hungry - all I do is eat fruit and veggies and wheat grilled chicken pastas.... never touch anything but water. (That's how I lost the first 30 easy... no more sodas!!!)

I know - I'm trying to be patient, but arghhh.....

Anway - Tiff - I haven't been to the aquarium, I've got to be the only one in my office who hasn't - but everyone else adores it and the reality that they hit their million mark 6 months early is a true testimate to the pull of the facility. It is fabulous from what everyone says.

Anyway - gotta actually get some work done.

Thanks group - see you on the flip side.

Wow, I'm so proud of my step daughter, who's been running 15 miles per week in order to prepare herself for an upcoming marathon. She and my daughter in law are doing a half marathon, in Lincoln NE, in May for TNT. They are running in honor of my step son, who has been battling leukemia for 5 years....hubby & I are going there to surprise them at the finish line! :cool1:

Christa-- Good luck on your tri!!!!! :cheer2: I can't wait to hear all about it.

I had my swimming lesson last night and it was great. I learned a lot about stroke technique and why my crawl breathing has been so difficult. I can't wait to practice what I've learned. I also did an hour of nautilus (60K lbs), 25 minutes rowing and 30 minutes stat. bike. My arms were so tired I had trouble holding onto the edge when we were idle in the deep end while the instructor talked.

I'm really tried today. I think I'll just do an hour of recomb bike at a real gentle pace while I do soduko puzzles :goodvibes

I don't know if I'll run at all this week before my half. I just don't seem to care :confused3

Mel-- I started looking at the firstgiving site and discovered the office is in Lexington, MA! That's my training grounds. This must be meant to be :wizard:

Sunny

Good morning everyone. :sunny:

This morning I did 45 min on the TM and I bumped it up to 3.8 @ 1%. You wouldn't think 1/10 would make much of a difference but I felt it. It felt good to make some progress. I feel strong and it feels like I am building up some endurance. :woohoo:

Tonight I have an evaluation lesson. They are going to make me ride for an hour while they evaluate my skills. I probably won't be able to walk tomorrow.

Cam, oh Cam......I SO wish I could. But we have so many trips planned for this year, I just can't afford another one. :rolleyes2 Wanna hear something funny? Yes, we are going to Italy this summer, but come on, with my IN-LAWS! Ugh. So I told DH "You know, couldn't we just go to the Italy pavilion at Epcot alone and just pretend we're at Italy????" Trust me. It would be much more fun. BTW Cam, WHAT formal garden in Italy? You mean, I've MISSED something at Epcot?????

Oh geez Krista, you're no help! ;) Which brand of veggie burgers do you like? We eat them all the time. Even DH, who isn't a veghead like me, likes them.

MickeySP - You lost 160 pounds!?!?!?!?!?! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Mel - Don't be bummed. You did FAB-U-LOUS! We are all very proud of you! :thumbsup2

Hi Christa - We miss your pictures! :goodvibes

Monte - WOW! That's so great of them to be running in honor of your stepson.

I've been thinking about something I read in MFM. It's about commitment. I guess for me, making a commitment was really key to training. I have all my life "attempted" to stick to an exercise plan. Well, all the good intentions in the world didn't help. I know all the right reasons for exercising. But I guess I was never committed to it before. Now, I have a goal, I have a plan, and I'm sticking to it. Maybe that's what I needed all along. This is the first time in my life that I have actually stuck with something like this. In some small tiny way, I am very proud of myself for doing this. OK, I'm not bragging. It's more like I am amazed! It's been three months now and I'm still getting up at 4:45am and going downstairs and getting on that treadmill. I guess in registering for the Half, I really did give myself something to strive for. That, plus you all keep me accountable. And also, since Cam got me started here, I don't want to disappoint her.

Anyway, just my garbled two cents about commitment.

Judy - Sneaking off to look, just look, at airfaire to Orlando in three weeks....

Judy - - Disappoint me? OMG, I am so sorry that you think that is even possible! You inspire me! I can't even drag myself out of bed at 5:15 to head to the gym so the fact that you are getting up at 4:45 and doing so much dreadmill work is truly remarkable to me! :worship: I cannot wait to scream your name as you come down Main Street on January 6! I want to do for you what Carrie did for me - -a huge hug, a high five and I guarantee tears will be streaming down my face out of happiness for you and pride in your journey! Okay, enough mushy stuff. I AM at work, you know! ;)

BTW -- yes, I just read that there are formal gardens in Italy. Oh, and the rose garden in the America pavillion has all these roses named for presidents, IIRC. :teeth:

For anyone still considering the Disneyland 1/2 -- we got our first official email yesterday and in it they announced the race is at nearly 70% of registration capacity!

Sunny -- I am impressed that even you can learn new breathing techniques! Not that I know anything about it, but I wouldn't worry about the fact that you dont' feel like running this week. Sounds to me like all the other stuff you are doing is enough to stay geared up for the 1/2 and your body certainly knows how to do a 1/2, so you'll be fine. Don't suddenly decide however that you need to get a bunch of running miles in, though, and wipe yourself out. Remember you are doing all that other stuff too! :cool1:

Mel -- I think your time is absolutely awesome and would DEFINITELY use the Garmin time. :cheer2:

Christa -- Good luck on your tri! I am so excited for you! Now, don't feel like you should be taking pix during this event, okay? Just come back and describe it to us really well! :teeth:

Amy -- kickboxing class sounds great! I can't believe you did that AND ran too! You GO, girl! :thumbsup2 How are you feeling today?

Sorry I can't get to everyone's posts. Getting ready for a conference call. Hope everyone is having a great day.

Oh, BTW, didnt' get to the gym yesterday (rest day after 6 miles Sunday -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it!). Heading there tonight for ST and some cross-training. Tomorrow morning will be TM, if I can drag myself out of bed at 5:15. Maybe I should get Judy to call me from her TM! :lovestruc

Cam - When you are screaming for joy for Judy, can you muster a "go Jen" for me. I so need all the support I can get.

This chubby all her life 30 something has something to prove, both to myself and the world. I told hubby I will be bawling if I finish!!! Heck I will be bawling when I finish my first 5k!!!!

I get some much inspiration from everyone here. 2 weeks ago I was ready to give up, now I am moving forward.

Lynne - Thank you so much for taking the time to advise me on how to restart my program. I printed it out and will some how some way be starting TODAY. Okay I wrote that so some how I will do it!

Judy - You are amazing girl :cheer2: . There is no way that I could get my lazy rear out of bed that early. I hit the snooze till the last possible minute.

Cam - Oh I so wish I was going that weekend. I have always wanted to take the time to really explore Epcot not run from ride to ride like we normally do. That would be so much fun!! My DS is on spring break 3/24-3/27 so we hope to go then but will be grounded if that darn airfare doesnt come down :badpc:

Solo - I hope you are feeling better. Take care of yourself!

Jen117 - This group is the reasont that I got as far as I did even though I wasn't able to run in the 2006 due to injury. Please keep posting and checking in as this is a great group of people!

Okay I know I've missed a ton of people but I have gotta go. Hope everyone is doing great and will try to check in again later. (Hopefully with some exercise to report :) )

Jen -- I was a year ago right where you are now and let me tell you, the process of getting to the START line of any event (and especially your first 5K) is more exciting and rewarding than most people can fathom. I did my first 5K on 3/5/05, so I will be with you in spirit, in 2 weeks, sharing your excitement and joy.

And I PROMISE I am going to be SCREAMING your name :cheer2: when you come down Main Street. Heck, you'll be so embarassed by me you'll wish you weren't wearing an official WISH shirt with your name on it! You WILL be wearing an official WISH shirt with your name on it, won't you? ;) That is how Carrie spotted me. I had written my name on the front of my shoulder of my lime green shirt in HUGE letters! It was so much fun to get all that amazing support along the route. If you go to www.asiorders.com and put in picture id number 8161-334-032 you will get a feeling for the exuberance and exhileration that Rhonda and I were feeling right before we saw Carrie.

Minnie -- That is exactly what I was thinking -- no waiting in line for MS or TT or anything else except Soarin' and Turtle Talk. :cloud9:

Really disappointing run today :guilty: . My calf started to tighten around .5 miles into my 30 minute run today. But it didn't slow me down, did mile 1 in less than 10 minutes. Which was actually NOT a good thing since I think I pushed too hard and too fast. Somewhere nearing mile 2...and nearing my LFH (long freakin' hill), my calf got really really tender. It may be my achilles tendon?! NOt sure yet. But anyway...from there I walked a bunch and actually came to a complete stop at one point. I still managed an 11.11 mile but overall I'm quite discouraged. For one thing I didn't listen to my body...and for the other I really don't want to slow down. UGH! Okay, that's my vent for the day. I did get my abs and stretching done. I'm off to an ice bath in just a moment.

Cam: I wish I was going to be in WDW to wander Epcot with you. It would be too much fun!! I could use some warm weather too!!!! :sunny:

Jen: We'll all be cheering for you :cheer2: .

Christa: PD for the tri :wizard: . I know you'll do great :goodvibes .

Sunny: WTG on the swimming :woohoo: .

Judy: So proud of you for pushing it a bit! Way to go girl!!! :thumbsup2 You are doing so great :teeth: .

Amy - don't worry too much about your speed. The best thing you can do is add distance. I think after 1yr 1/2 of running including 3 1/2mars 2 fulls, 1 31.7miler (50k) and an upcoming marathon and 50miler, i still average right around 11mpm on training runs. I bounce between 10mpm and 10.5mpm on a half. 11mpm to 11.5 on a full and around 13 on the trail. my 5k;s are about 8:45mpm just b/cause they seem short now. Just keep building your endurance! you'll get to where you consider the 3 to 5 miles shorter runs and will be able to go faster.

did the tuesday mt. biking thing today. i took a fall that should have been an arm breaker, but i was able to clip out and catch myself before i feel into the creek below. My bike when on into the creek. we got off on some unmarked trail and were almost late for preschool p/u. not cool. it was fun though.

Christa - you are going to do great this weekend! can't wait to hear your race report.

sunny - i took a week off of running b/4 goofy and i think that really helped my motivation!

Cam...I hope to be wearing a shirt. I have been a Dis'er for many years, so why not show my WISH Pride!!! What a great picture. Were you walking at that point, or just happy??

I have another question that has been bugging me. People keep talking about shedding clothes, both that the beginning and along the way. What happens to all these clothes? Do you wear clothes that you don't care about losing?? I just figured you would tie them around your waist or something, but I guess not when you are running for that distance.

Also, how cold is it for the 1/2 Marathon (and Marathon). Not that it matters to me since I am in Wisconsin (we are used to cold). But for some reason, all the pics make it look like it is really cold there.

OK, Final question for this post... can family members be at the finish line or do they wait in the Lettered Tents (I remember someone talking about the W). Also, can they meet you along the course and then monorail it to the finish?

Thanks everyone. You will all see me, because I will be the one either screaming for joy or crying uncontrollably... both for joy tho!!!

Glad to see everyone is doing so well training to train. I wish I could be doing it along with you. I will find out Thurs AM if my left foot goes into a cast. I am not optimistic as the pain is not subsiding. I will aslo probably have to drop out of doing the Minnie. I hope that what she is trying will work and the pain will go away.

I am leaving for WDW on Mar 18. It is unclear whether my foot will be in a surgical boot or a cast. Either way, I only want to enjoy the week in Florida.

Keep up the good work and happyt training.
