Wk of Mar 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Clock time 3:05:00, garmin time was 3:03:07 (13:50 pace), but as usual, I forgot to turn the darn thing off at the finish. Remembered shortly after they cut off my chip. Was hoping for under 3 hours, but this is better than my WDW time of 3:09:20. I'll be looking forward to the official chip time.

Race report with photos to follow :sunny:

I was thinking about you Anne...how did it go? I'm into 7/11 myself, but both my girls were born on the 28th. :)

disneygoof I am actually planning on running the full, that is if everything goes as planned. Who knows if I'm feeling really good.... I might even go "GOOFY". That's a long way off though, as for now I am marathon bound.

Mouse Skywalker I swear I felt like I was pregnant for 4 years!! I had my son in 2001, then right before he was 2 I got pregnant again (baby was born still), then 6 months after that I got pregnant with my second son who was born Oct of 2004. Everytime I tried to get back in shape and start running long runs again I swear I got knocked up!! It is definately harder to get back to running after having a kid. Congrats on the 21 of 28 days in February, I don't think I even came close to that!!

TiffJ I said 8 miles was my farthest EVER!! Right now I run 2 miles 3 times a week. I run my 2 miles in a high intensity interval training type run, so I know that if I weren't interval training I could easily do 3 miles. What I plan on doing is basically doing a 5k train, a half marathon train, and then the marathon training, which will get me right up to the time of the Marathon next year.

Mel Congratulations!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

So picture if you will....big, fat, tired, gimping me RUNNING from this cyotee......It really isn't chasing me or anything, but it was a bit too close for comfort.
:rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2:
Cam: here is why this is a hilarious story....because we can all picture ourselves in that spot
Liz: thank you for sharing your hilarious experience. hasn't anyone ever told you never to run from a dog? it just makes them want to chase you more. then again obviously no one has ever told your coyote that either :rolleyes2

Lisa: :thanks: thanks for the names list. my real name is claire

Dana: :welcome:

Maherea: Your number is soo neat. I would be thrilled with that number also because March 16th is my b-day! ::yes::

Dave: Your analogy of Mr. Incredible was cracking me up :rotfl:

Monte:
Sorry to hear that you are coming down with a cold. Get some rest and get to feeling better. It stinks while you have it, but just think of it as one less virus that you can get in the future. :rolleyes2

I started getting a scratchy throat about a week ago and thought it was just allergies (we are getting spring pollen here now) but ~boohiss~ then I couldnt swallow without it hurting and it finally moved up to my nose Thursday. Its pretty much gone now (still a lil cough) after spending the week asleep and Friday filled with Robutussin (sp?) and Dayquil
Being the nutcase that I am I still went out jogging. Sunday and Tuesday were great workouts, but Thursday and Friday both were slow and hard.
This morning I went to the actual start of where our 5K and jogged it from there rather than starting in the middle like I normally do. This also adds a nasty hill that I usually go down but had to go up and put me jogging past my usual stopping point about a mile from the end which was pure torture. Then it ends with a hill-- eck. I jogged it pretty easy with a time of 35 min. It's always nice on Sundays because there is a little pack of 7 runners who I usually see on the way. Today (b/c of the change in direction), they ran past me which was depressing in a way, but I could also cheer myself up by thinking about the fact that soon enough (in the fall) I would be able to keep up with them.

I'm in my final countdown to my 5K on Saturday. I count it as my first "real race", b/c its the first 5K that I have actually trained for. :yay:

Have a great day all! :mickeybar

Mel, what a GREAT time for your run!! After we finished the 5K we hung around to cheer some of the RUNNERS in the 1/2. I kept thinking.."and this is what Mel is doing..GO, Mel!" :cheer2:
I know most of you don't know..I have cared for my 90 year old mother who has senile dementia for the last five years. If you met her, you would think she was a nice lady..so it's not as bad as some people have it. She's physically healthy, just mentally not there! She doesn't know who I am, wants to go out and get a job..Anyway, I have a companion that comes to stay with her when I have to be gone for a lenghty period of time. I was a little hesitant about signing up for this 5K, because it meant that I had to try and get a companion to come at 6 a.m. on a Sunday, but the company I used said, "No problem." Our first 5K is an hour drive away and the companion is LATE!!! :scared1: We had everything in the car, ready to go..so when she did arrive (fortunately, it was someone who has been with my mother before), I just had to briefly talk to her and dash out the door.

We arrived at the race 10 minutes before the start!!!! Got our warmup walk in going the 1/2 mile from the car to the start, so we were ready. We were NOT the last ones finished!!! :woohoo: I was trying to do what John Bingham says, and not turn off the GARMIN right at the finish...but like you, Mel..it was a bit AFTER that that I remembered! Managed to do a 15 minute pace (yes, I AM envious of all of you with your fantastic paces!!), so I'm signing up for Minnie!! Back in January I was struggling with a 17 minute pace..See what all of your encouragement has done??
exercise2.gif

Dave, you, too, have come a long way from when you first started posting!! Now, just don't push yourself and reactivate those SHIN SPLINTS!!!The race had orange cones in the street to separate the last of the group from those on their way back to the finish. I used those to wog between every so often.
Liz, first..get those blisters taken care of!! Then...COYOTE??!! in Indiana??? Oh, my goodness!!! We saw them often crossing the highway in TX. They looked lean and HUNGRY..glad yours didn't!! ;) and then Cam has hawks circling her!! Hawks are ok, Cam..it's the buzzards you have to watch for! :rotfl:
Minnie so glad that you are able to get back into exercising without PAIN!! You've really had a tough time , and I am just glad for you that maybe now it's over!!
MickeySP, I had to laugh at your post...I have several sheets of paper with "Minnie", "WDW 1/2", "WDW Full," and "DisneyLand" and everyone's DIS name, real name, state, and AGE (since you all went there!!! :) )!!! Waaaay too much time reading this board!! :rolleyes1
monte you are doing so good to continue..even when you don't feel well! :thumbsup2
louisianagal we'll be cheering for YOU next Saturday!!

Happy Sunday all!!

Mel - Congrats on your race and your awesome time. :cheer2:

MelR - Have a great time rock climbing tomorrow. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Dana - Welcome to the group. You'll get loads of great advice and encouragement here.

Dave - :rotfl2: At the Mr. Incredible visual. Glad your DD's liked the tights. I just took my first yoga class on Thursday and really enjoyed it.

MickeySP - WTG on breaking the 5 mile mark.

Christy - Happy Anniversary!!!

Monte - I hope you feel better and are able to kick the cold soon.

Liz - :rotfl: At the coyote story!! The visual is just too funny.

Lilouisianagal - Best of luck on your first 5k race.

Maherae - Congrats on your race. So glad you'll be there for the Minnie :cheer2:

I did a 6 mile LR this morning. I am really beat these days. I think I just need spring to get here ASAP.

I hope everyone has a great week and lots of successful training.

Wow! I had a lot of reading to do here :). Let me catch up with everyone...

Dave: OMG! :lmao: I loved your Mr. Incredible analogy. But I have to say that getting new running clothes really got me in the spirit. Good for you on the new running tights! Sounds like you had a great run/walk! You're really on track!

Dana: WELCOME! So glad you have joined our happy group :grouphug: .

MEL!!! Woo-Hoo on the race today. :cheer2: I'm so excited for you, sounds like a great time! I was thinking about you and sending PD for a great race....looks like you didn't need any!

MickeySP: 5 Miles is a great accomplishment!

Msblrobs: 6 Miles....trust me that is something to be happy about. I haven't broken 3 miles yet. I feel like such slouch...everyone is putting in so many miles!!

Maherae:  WTG on the race! You must be so proud of yourself!

Monte: :wizard: A bit of pixie dust....hopefully you can fight this cold off! This time of year is so tough!

Liz: :rotfl: Sorry to laugh at your coyote story BUT I have to say that it reminded me of my double trouble pit-bull story from a few weeks ago. I SPRINTED to my house....didn't know I could go that fast! Glad your safe and sound....take care of those ouchies though!

lillouisianangel: GOOD LUCK on your race next week!!! :cheer2: Sounds like your training is coming along wonderfully....I bet you'll have a super 5K!!!

Yesterday was my rest day. So today was my third run of the week. I was scheduled for a 2.5 miler but since I have been going a little further than that on my 30 minute runs during the week I thought I'd push it up to 2.7 since I knew that route pretty well. My first mile seemed quick...I think it was around 10.3. But then I hit my ugly BFHs...they just took the wind out of my sails and I dropped off a bit on the pace. Overall I ran a 10.8 min/mile on average so not too bad. I think that is one of my better times. However, it wasn't pretty. I didn't get enough sleep last night and had a few glasses of wine. Which is clearly NOT conducive to feeling your best during a run...but it was my sister's b'day so we had to celebrate! LOL! :teeth:

This afternoon I took my Brownie troop snow-tubing. OMG....dragging that tube up the hill time and again was a nice addition to my workout today. I actually ran the hill a few times in my big clunky boots  . I think I added another mile to my overall workout today! :smooth: But it was FUN! We had a blast.

My long run is done  , but my speed needs quite an improvement (I finished 3 miles in 45:04). I HAVE to go get shoes this week! Tuesday morning, I will go to the local running store!

Lisa~ Thanks for the list of names, it is really nice to have a "real" name to go with the screen names.

Liz~YIKES, my fear of dogs is why I almost always run on the treadmill (and it is beautiful outside today). When I was around 10 years old, a dog named "Tiny" chased me and my sister on our bikes. "Tiny" was almost as tall as my sister and weighed at least 100 pounds :confused3 . He scared me for life :teeth:. I think I would have died if I was you!

Christy

Lisa, I too would like to thank you for the list of real names. I will have to print that off.

Off to work another night shift- four more including tonight!

Jodi

It's certainly a good thing to fill your body with energy and power in the days before a race. Apples, bananas, pastas and grains will increase your carbohydrate content for your muscles on race day. I try hard to make sure I get "enough" of these foods in advance.

Honestly in this day and age, with the gels and power bars, I'm not sure that a pasta fill up is necessary. In the morning about 1.5 hours before the race I take down a power bar, and I don't take anything but water and energy drink :drinking1 in a half. For the full this year I began to take the gel (man is that vile stuff; I needed to wash it down with water after squeezing it into the throat) at the half way point and it certainly helped. A pasta dinner can't hurt, but I'm not sure it will help.

One sure thing I can advise is to not sign up for the pasta dinner the night before at the all star cafe at the WDW sports complex. I still have memories of January 2004, seeing many, many people lined up outside the cafe in the freezing cold wind waiting to get in. Waiting is the last thing I need before a race.

If you're after the pasta, there are lots of restaurants near WDW which will satisfy your craving.

I always consume apples before. It's good for you, especially on race day, and it makes me feel good. Sort of a pre-race psych up.

Also, over 40 degrees here today. Soon I'll be back outside. I can't wait.

Good luck

Craig

Hello everyone!! Enjoying the last bit of your weekend? I'm not looking forward to tomorrow, I hate Monday's! I had awesome workouts this weekend, it really made me excited about running again! Friday I did a half an hour of Pilates, on Saturday I ran 5 miles in 54 minutes, with a pace of 10:58. I was really happy with that, but I may be suffering from my first running injury. About 3.5-4 miles into my run, the back of my knee started hurting, it started on the outside, but then it worked it's way to the middle of the back of my knee. So now I have my first injury, not what I need 62 days before the Flying Pig 1/2 marathon, hopefully I'll figure out what the problem is (heading over to Google my symptoms and see if I can find some stretches and exercises to strengthen my knee), but I just have to remember that the Flying Pig isn't my ultimate goal, the Disney marathon is. I need to be healthy for that and ready to start training by the end of August. Stephen and I went to the Community Center this afternoon, I did the elliptical machine for 15 minutes, but it was really hurting my knee, so then I did the stationary bike for 15 minutes. Stephen and I hit the weight room after that to do some leg presses (Sunny has nothing on me, I lifted a whopping 50 lbs! :lmao: ) and then I found this new ab bench that was awesome, but I'll definitely feel that tomorrow! Okay, I'm going to stop talking about myself now.

Mel-- :cheer2: :cheer2: that's awesome! I'm so glad your 1/2 went great. I knew you could do it!

Christa--I had a dream about you and Bree last night. I dreamt that we were all at my house (although where we were wasn't really my house), carb loading for the Flying Pig! Okay, I won't tease you anymore! :p

Liz--You make me laugh! I won't run by houses with dogs in the front yards, unless I can tell they are tied up. I once had a lap dog nip at my ankles while the owner looked on, I may have "accidentally" kicked the dog away from me.

Dana--Welcome!! :wave2:

Dave--I know what you mean about running tights. I'm a pretty small person, but I still feel so self conscious in those stupid tights!! You find once you get over that, they are great! Good job on your 4 miles. Is that the furthest you've ever gone?

Carrie--Just wanted to say hi. :wave2:

Okay, I have to be a proud Momma and show you guys my "baby". Please disregard my sleepy look and the blanket on the couch--I have to get in my Sunday afternoon nap!!

DSC01858.JPG

I'm going to get off here, I have to self diagnois myself. I'm thinking I'm taking a rest day tomorrow, at least a running rest day, I may do Pilates. Happy training everyone!!

Oh, one more thing. I bought Crocs this weekend, yeah baby, I'm part of the ugly shoe club!! :yay:

Feels good to be back here after not being around much for the past month or so. So much has been going on I'm not even going to try to catch up.

I have been way off on training. I did not make my goal for only the second time since Aug 04, and I feel the difference. I have had a cold that I just can't seem to get over, my knees have been bad, and MIL's passing last month have added up to set my training back far more than I like. Tues, I go back to my Ortho for Hyalgan injections in both knees. That is supposed to provide some cushioning where now there is none. Then according to the info I have on it, it is rest for 48 hrs to allow the injections to work. After that, 2 more rounds of injections, I am not sure of the time schedule on those. Hopefully they will work because I talked to a neighbor who said they did not work for her. If not, it's knee replacement surgery for me. That will really mess up my training! So for now, no races for me. I do plan to stick around here because I want to stay motivated, and you guys sure do that for me!

Craig,

Thanks for the advice - I had been kind of worried about doing the pasta dinner thing because I'm never sure that it will sit in my stomach correctly.

I would much rather go for the fruit and grains approach! :thumbsup2

I will have to practice with the gels - I already have experience with bars and have no problem with them. The gels that everyone talks about, where can I find them - are they at vitamin stores like the bars or are the gels only available at sports/running stores?

Thanks again :)

Jodi

Dana: Welcome! These guys are great motivation.

Anne: Congrats on your 5K yesterday. Now on to the Minnie!

Krista: Your "baby" is adorable. I have a DD15, but my real baby is my 4yr old lab/chow.

Perfectmatch300: Hope your knee treatment works. That sounds painful!

I'm home for one night to do laundry before heading back to finish up the rest of my mom's stuff. Thanks for all the words of encouragement from everyone. I'm hoping by the end of this week to be back to "normal!"

Ugh! I had to read in spurts b/c the boy wanted to watch a movie on my laptop! Now I've forgotten all the responses I had planned.

Krista - loved the pic! It is great to see your baby, and you in your steelers shirt! Sorry about your knee.

Mel - great race. that is so awesome! Let us know when you find out your chip time. I ALWAYS forget to stop my garmin when i come across the finish line.

Jodi - I use the gels (and they aren't that bad - they only make me gag when they are really cold or if i have sinus drainage) I get them at the bike shop, but your running store will have them. I also use sport beans (they have the electrolytes in them) and I have seen them at wal-greens. I get them at the bike shop too. You can order gels at nashbar.com or performancebike.com ) go through sunny's site. sunnyshopper.com to get them.

Craig - you only ate one gel the whole marathon? You are tough. I crash if I don't eat every 4 miles!!!

We did go rock climbing today. The last route i topped out wore me out. I had no grip strength left and could not even get on one that had been easy for me before. I need to be lifting upper body weights but YUCK! I got some good pics of the boy climbing. I'll have to post them when I get them on the computer. He did really good. He is so little still, he is almost too light to weight the rope to rappel down, so coming down is always an ordeal, but today it wasn't too bad.

I have an adventure race next weekend. Sarah (EC) and I are doing a women's team. It is the first race where either of us have ever navigated, so it should be fun. We are going to practice orienteering again this week on our exercise day, so hopefully we wont get lost in the woods on race day.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Whew, happy Monday... still trying to wake up this morning.

WTG Mel :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Great time with your 1/2 Marathon. I can't wait to see the report and photos.

Maherae - wow, it sounds like you have a lot to deal with in caring for your Mother. Sounds like you had a great race though. 15mpm pace - that's awesome! WTG! :thumbsup2
Dave, you, too, have come a long way from when you first started posting!! Now, just don't push yourself and reactivate those SHIN SPLINTS!!!
Thank you for your comment - you're too kind. I definitely am trying not to push it too fast, and am very conscious of not getting those shin splints again. No way, do not want to get those again.

I had a good workout Sunday. Did a little over 2.5 miles in about 35 min (~13:45 pace). Mixed in a little lamp post running, and ran up my BFH. I was keeping my distance short after my 4 mile long walk/run on Saturday. Today I'm having a rest day. I figure I should try to do my outside wogging on the weekend and do rest days on work days when the schedule is more hectic.

Morning Everyone!

Well, it looks like I won't be able to run tonight - over the weekend my DH's uncle passed away and the wake is tonight.

I did finally register for a 5k that is taking place in May for Breast Cancer Research. Sending out my e-mail donations now (although, I'm not very good a fundraising - I hope I have a little success) - they took some of the brain work out and have a template you can send out asking for donations. My goal is to get to $100.00, but hopefully I will make more than that.

I might have some success with my co-workers.....although, everyone these days seems to be on a very tight budget (including myself).

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Jodi :goodvibes

Yikes! I just cannot stay away from the boards for 3 days. I cannot keep up!!

MGM - I am soo sorry. Thinking of you.

Mel - WTG!!! That is sawesome!! Still trying to make my way to your report.

Krista - Thanks for the hi. I needed that! :goodvibes Your baby is adorable! Crocs, almost tried a pair on today. I *think* I could do pink and not feel too ugly. Used too thick of socks as an excuse not to, though. Just cxould not make that ugly leap. ;) Good for you for being more brave than I! ;)

I di my 6 on Saturday. It was a decent pace fro us for winter, but I was disappointed. After my weekday runs had been so good, I thought this one would be great. Uh, no. The wind was awful, though, and I gcould not get a decent amount of layers. WInd made it cold, roated when it stopped. It's supposed to hit 50 on Friday, so I'm hoping for spring weather Saturday. It will probably snow, though. ;)

This article was on one of the triathlon sites I frequent and I thought many people here might find it interesting.

The Athlete’s Kitchen

“For all the exercise I do, I should be pencil thin!”
"Am I the only runner who has ever gained weight training for a marathon???"
"Why does my husband shed pounds when he exercises and I don't???"

When I listen to athletes complain about their lack of success with losing body fat, I hear abundant frustration: “Why can’t I do something as simple as lose a few pounds!!!” Why? Because weight loss is not simple and often includes debunking a few diet and exercise myths. Perhaps this article will offer some insights that lead you to success with your weight loss efforts.

Myth: You must exercise in order to lose body fat.
To lose body fat, you must create a calorie deficit. You can create that deficit by adding on exercise (which improves your overall health and fitness) or by simply eating fewer calories. Sick people commonly lose body fat but they do not exercise; they create a calorie deficit. Similarly, injured athletes can also lose fat despite lack of exercise. The story “I gained weight when I was injured because I couldn’t exercise” could more correctly be stated “I gained weight when I was injured because I was bored and depressed. I overate for comfort and entertainment.”

Myth: The more you exercise, the more fat you lose.
Often, the more you exercise, the hungrier you get and:
the more you eat, or
the more your believe you “deserve” to eat, or
the more you want to eat as a reward for having both gotten to the gym and survived the exercise session.
But if you spend 60 minutes in a spin class and burn off 600 calories, only to reward yourself with twelve Oreos (600 calories), you quickly wipe out your weight loss efforts in less than 3 minutes.

The effects of exercise on weight loss are complex and unclear. We know among older people (56-78 years) who participated in a vigorous walking program, daily calorie needs remained about the same (2,400 without exercise, 2,480 with exercise). How could that be? Well, the participants napped more and were 62% less active throughout the rest of their day (1).

Another study with post-menopausal women found the same results from 8 weeks of moderate exercise training. Their 24-hour energy expenditure remained similar from the start to the end of the program (2). The bottom line: You have to eat according to your whole day’s activity level, not according to how hard your trained that day.

Myth: If you train for a marathon, your body fat will melt away.
Wishful thinking. I commonly hear marathoners, triathletes and other highly competitive endurance athletes complain “For all the exercise I do, I should be pencil thin.” They fail to lose fat because, like the fitness exercisers described above, they put all of their energy into exercising, but then tend to be quite sedentary the rest of the day as they recover from their tough workouts. A study with male endurance athletes who reported a seemingly low calorie intake found they did less spontaneous activity than their peers in the non-exercise parts of their day (3). The bottom line: You need to keep taking the stairs instead of the elevators, no matter how much you train!

Alternatively, athletes who complain they eat like a bird but fail to lose body fat may simply be under-reporting their food intake. A survey of female marathoners indicated the fatter runners under-report their food intake more than their leaner peers (4). Remember: Calories mindlessly eaten standing up or on-the-run count just as much as calories from meals.

Myth: Couples who exercise together lose fat together.
In a 16-month study looking at exercise for weight loss, men and women completed an identical amount of exercise. The men lost an average 11.5 pounds; the women maintained weight (5)! In another study with previously sedentary, normal weight men and women who participated in an 18 month marathon training program, the men increased their calorie intake by about 500 per day; the women increased by only 60 calories—despite having added on 50 miles per week of running. The men lost about five pounds of fat; the women, two pounds (6).

What’s going on here??? Well, a husband who adds on exercise is likely to lose more weight than his wife because he’s likely heftier and thereby burns more calories during the same workout. But, speaking in terms of evolution, Nature seems protective of women’s role as child bearer, and wants women to maintain adequate body fat for nourishing healthy babies. Hence, women are more energy efficient. Obesity researchers at NY’s Columbia University suggest a pound of weight loss in men equates to a deficit of about 2,500 calories, while women need a 3,500 calorie deficit!!! (7) No wonder women have a tougher time losing weight then do men.

The bottom line
If you are exercising to lose weight, I encourage you to separate exercise and weight. Yes, you should exercise for health, fitness, stress relief and, most importantly, for enjoyment. (After all, the E in exercise stands for enjoyment!) I discourage you from exercising to burn off calories; that makes exercise feel like punishment for having excess body fat. When exercise is something you do to your body, rather than do for your body, you’ll eventually quit exercising. Bad idea.

Instead of focusing on exercise to lose body fat, pay attention to your calorie intake. Knocking off just 100 calories a day from your evening snacks can theoretically result in 10 pounds a year of fat loss. Seem simpler than hours of sweating?

Hi, everyone!
Jodi -- sorry about your Uncle in Law.

Nancy -- Don't overdo it on your knees. Give those shots a chance to work and don't be discouraged by the experience of others. We are all different.

Dave -- Sounds like you had a great weekend, workout-wise! Good move, taking it easy today. I think you are supposed to have 2 real rest days each week.

BTW, I just cannot do those gels. I am fine with chocolate powerbars, the snickers marathon bars, Cliff bars and the cliff (jello-like) shots. But anything of a gel consistency -- I just cannot persuade myself to swallow it.

Krista -- your baby is absolutely gorgeous! He looks very intelligent. :teeth: My "baby" is a 5 1/2 year old cairn terrier who is as sweet and loyal and generous as the sky is big. I'll have to show Howard your picture. He always asks about the DIS WISHer who is as big a Steelers fan as him. He'll get a kick out of the picture of you with your shirt. I hope your knee feels completely better very quickly. :goodvibes: pixiedust:

ETA: BTW, I have just discovered I am doing my first solo trip to WDW arriving late night Thursday 3/30 and leaving wee hours of Sunday 4/2. Anyone else going to be there during that time?

Has anyone seen Lisa recently? Hey, Lisa, we miss you and hope all is well with you and your family! :wave2:
