Wk of Mar 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

OK, I just went back to read the posts.

Judy: I'm glad you're doing better. I do hope the MRI comes out negative. Please let us know how everything comes out.

Liz: WOW!!!!!! That is absolutely amazing and incredible!!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: My respect for Bingham has just gone up and up!!! I'm glad I ordered a copy of Marathoning for Mortals from amazon to go along with my Garmin!!! Now, I wish I could have an autographed copy! I can't wait to hear how the t-shirt presentation goes!!!

Oh, Liz, how absolutely fabulous!!! The Penguin KNOWS you!!! What a great person. Wait til Cam reads your post!! party: :jumping1:

I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO ASK THIS!!!! Wisher's from 2006 marathon, have you received your finisher's certificate yet? Stephen got his yesterday and it's AWESOME!! For the full, they have your name, official time, chip time, 10 mile split, half split, and 20 mile split. Plus it has your rank overall and your rank in your class. And the best part, it's signed by MICKEY MOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::MickeyMo

The certificate comes with a cd-rom of the race weekend that is just amazing. I seriously wanted to get out there and run after watching it. Very inspiring! It made me so excited for next year!! And excited for the Flying Pig--5 weeks from Sunday. :bitelip:

Also, things I meant to talk about in my earlier post....

Judy--Do whatever works for you! If you like walking on the treadmill, then by all means do it. The only disadvantage you might have would be getting used to the impact of walking on the ground, but if you are doing your long walks outside, then you should be fine.

Kevin--I would have played with the puppy too!! There is a Newfie that goes to our obedience school too, whenever he is there, I always tell Hines to say hi to his cousin, since Labrador retrievers and Newfoundlands (did I spell that right? It looks funny) are both from the same area and thought to be closely related. How big are your dogs? I know Newfies can get really big. Hope your roommate is feeling better!!

Amy-- :cheer2: :cheer2: on your run!! I'm glad that you are feeling better. Did you find any good deals on running clothes? I love finding a good bargain. Sometimes I buy things I don't particularly want or need, all because it was a good deal. :teeth:

Liz--I can't believe John Bingham called you!!!!!!!!!!! How amazing!!! I am jealous!

I better get back to work, I'll check in later. :wizard: for everyone's long runs and walks.

OK wayyy too much that I missed. Here's what stuck in my every little brain:

DAve - Love teh socks!!

Feather - Yes, my non-boarding dh came up with teh dumbo's feather idea for my new "virtual friends." ALthough he'd never be on the boards himself, he will admit that advice from this group was instrumental in our doing the marathon.

Kevin - Cool about the puppy!

Kristi - I have very narrow feet and was very concerend when I got longer new shoes about slippage. I do MUCH better too loose than too tight, as long as my feet don't wobble. I had numbness and pain when I tied too tight.

GoofyGuy - Welcome!!! We need all the support and advice we can get. I'd like to think you might glean something from us tha twill help you along. If not, just know you're appreciated!

Amy - Hope you feel better soon!

Krista - Isn't is sad when our babies grow up? Actually, our dogh was 10 months when we got him, so we missed the fun puppy stage. WOuldn't have traded my Bruno for the world, though.

OK, missed yet another run due to work. These 12-hour days have got to stop! They should be about over, though. Have a great weekend everyone!!!!

I got my certificate and CD-ROM in the mail and I LOVE IT! The certificate is so cool (although I was strangely bummed about my "place" and the CD is wonderful. Did you see on the course map section where you can click on each mile marker and it will show you the sign they had at each mile marker along the course with the inspirational quote?? Too Cool!

And I will admit to watching the video intro on it over and over again to see if I saw any WISHers or myself, but I didn't catch any. :teeth:

To answer your dog questions, my roomate has a 6 year old black Lab and he's about 80lbs or so. I have a 4.5 year old Newfie (whom I got got from the rescue when he was 11 months) who is about 120-125 lbs right now due to his winter weight gain. By Newfie standards he was a "runt" and he couldn't be sold by the breeder, hence the adoption. He's the biggest lap dog I've ever seen. (Yes, he likes to sit on my lap. Yes, I let him. Yes, I know who's in charge..... )

As it is suddenly become very cloudy outside I am beginning to worry about my run.... keeping my fingers crossed that the rain holds off a few more hours (or gets going and pushes through).

I sepant a VERY long time trying to find those quotes. Now I have to see if I can squeeze tehm in my book. Argghhh! Hoping our certificates are waiting at home.

Liz that is so awesome about that phone call!! OMG I would be in tears! I am working on reading his books at the moment and he is definitely an inspirations. I hope you enjoy your walk!!

Tell me you are joking. Your dog weighs 125 lbs??? He weighs more than me!!!!!!!!!!! I think Hines is a little small, which is surprising because his parents were both big. He'll be a year on April 14 and a month ago weighed 49lbs. Don't you think that's small for a full-blood lab? I know his Mom was around 80 lb and his Dad was more. When are they fully grown? And how in the world do you keep the hair under control? Hines sheds so much, I am always covered in black hair. :dog:

Krista - That does sound small. I've had many lab owners tell me abou tehir 75-pound dogs, thinking they were huge. Bruno was 150, so I used to laugh! ;) Kevin, how big is your place for 3 big dogs?

I think the black labs are the smallest of the lab breeds. I have a Golden Retriever and she is 70 pounds. She didn't reach her adult weight until 2 years old. She likes to go running with me, but doesn't like to slow down when I need a break!

Oh and I knew someone who had a chocolate lab that was HUGE, like close to 100 pounds. I think they are the biggest of the labs.

OMG - I had a breakthough today.........I went running today with my Garmin (god, I love being outside - love the Garmin). Anyhow, I was running the course that I ran with the running group that one day - my goal being just to take it slow and steady - I really didn't care about pace, etc. just wanted to get the 5k I had planned for.

Well, not only did I make it through the whole 5k without out any major stomach tightness (actually, I can't remember feeling any) but I also, shaved a couple of minutes off my last time out with the Garmin. You have no idea how happy that made me :teeth: . I did the whole 5k in 35 minutes at a pace of 5.3.

Next time I go, maybe I will try and shave more time off - although, at this point I'm looking at doing that for the 5k that I have in May - I really would like to do better than a 12 min/mile, not that there is anything wrong with that but I just want to go a little faster, as long as my body will allow (not going to push myself too hard).

Dave - I'm with you I wish I could do the Minnie run too! I can't wait to do the Goofy Challenge next year. The socks sound like they are reasonably priced too! I wasn't sure what to expect as far as price.

BTW - Dave, you will absolutely love the Garmin! I love mine, I'm so happy I bumped into this thread on the WISH boards - I would have never heard about the Garmin.

I will check in with everyone later on -

Jodi

Oh no, I'm absolutely serious. And he's on the small side for a Newfie. Most adult male Newfoundlands are in the 150-160 lb range. Our carpets have a touch of black in them, which helps to mask the hair issue. That said, in order to keep up, it's Daily Vacuuming. When summer rolls around, it's even tougher since they tend to shed a bit more than usual due to the warm weather.

49lbs does seem a little small for that age. That said, a lot of labs you see are slightly overweight due to lack of exersice, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Carrie-- Normal sized ranch house, actually. Just with a large yard, a nearby soccer field and no kids in the household... so that helps.

Jodi-- Congrats on the 5K PR!! Great pace!!

Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Are you going to be on the Wonder for Christmas then go Goofy???? :smooth:

Judy

Jodi- congrats on your breakthrough and 5K PR! That's great! You really have come a long way since you started.
BTW - Dave, you will absolutely love the Garmin! I love mine, I'm so happy I bumped into this thread on the WISH boards - I would have never heard about the Garmin.
I'm with you there too Jodi. When I first started reading this board I had no idea what a Garmin was, then I found out about and thought "well, I'll never be a serious enough runner to spend money for one of those." And now I can't wait for mine to come in the mail.
I'm with you I wish I could do the Minnie run too! I can't wait to do the Goofy Challenge next year.
It will be so fun to hear everyone's reports from the Minnie, but I really wish I could be there just to meet everyone on the team. I guess I'll be there in spirit. Jodi, have you already registered for the Goofy Challenge? I still haven't registered for the marathon yet. Not quite ready to break it to the family yet. I'm not sure if DW is going to be thrilled with me wanting to go to WDW in January on the same weekend as DD8's b-day (she'll be 9 on Jan 6th). I just don't want to wait so long that the marathon fills up because I'll be really bummed.

Okay whew I finally got done scanning to catch up--lotta typing been going on this week.

Shorts discussion: (yes I'm too lazy to look up who :sad2: ) Definitely, the shorts can change your stride. The only kind of shorts that I can wear that don't bunch up are Umbro shorts with the checkerboard design. Any other brand-nope! Any other style of umbros--Nope! I have to wear those spandex/cotton bike shorts under anything other than checkers Umbros. I just about died a few years back when they stopped marketing in the US. Then they stopped making checkerboard style. Thank heavens that they started making them again and that my uncle just happens to make semi-frequent trips to London :goodvibes And it isnt just chubbiness, b/c like I said any others will bunch but the c.b. style doesnt.

Anne: :yay: I'm sooo ready. I really hope that its good weather that day, right now its not bad temp-wise, but it is nasty-humid out there--you feel like you are swimming instead of running! I'm trying to figure out my running schedule for the week leading up to CCC, since I'm thinking that doing my 14 miler LR on friday is not gonna fly!

Dave: The socks sound great! I wonder if we could do a penguin holding up a feather.... :rolleyes1 I think I have an idea of one accessory I will be carrying during the Goofy *tiptoes off to go find a lime green feather*

Kristi: Here's a page on lacing tips: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/cgi...@@@@&BV_EngineID=iaddgfeldlimbekgcgecfeedgf.0 And my hands tend to swell up if I am walking for a long distance with them down near my sides, as long as they are even with my heart they are all good.

Cam: Say "HI" to the Mouse for us! Have a super trip.

Kevin: Puppy!!! That is soo neat to do fostering. And btw our female black lab (a runt when she was a pup) is about 65 lbs but she didnt reach that weight until she was 2 or 3 yrs old.

On warm up/stretching:
I have a good 5 min walk to get to the running trails so I consider that my warm up. I *try* to start my workout jogs slowly. I always stretch after I run so that I know that my muscles are good and warm.

I've had a rather hectic past few weeks with school, but my runs have been going quite well. I love love love  Cricket (garmin). Today I had a 12 miler. I was a dorcas and forgot to program my intervals to repeat more than twice so I ran into the third interval and was wondering what was going on....stopped, fixed it, kept going though it messed up having one coherent workout report --grrr. Overall I went 13.1 miles (gee isnt that convient :smooth: ) including my cool down walk at the end. It took right at 3 hours which I am happy happy about.
I tried using granola bars during my run but I think I'm going to switch to gatorade, b/c the bars were just too sweet and I sweat like a horse, so I really need to be replacing salt/electrolytes in addition to fuel. Guess that means that I need to go shopping for a fuel belt :rolleyes1 gee golly darn!
I've had some nice short runs where I got a 12 min/mile pace going and that makes me :teeth: :woohoo: .
My best friend's DS1yr had to be put in the hospital a couple of days ago b/c he hadnt been putting on weight and then he stopped eating and drinking and dropped from 25 lbs to 16 lbs in four days. They have been running tests on him but dont have back any conclusive results yet. They think it might be Cystic Fibrosis, which is very scary for my friend. Good news is that they have him on an IV AND he has started eating and drinking again. Her husband has had to miss work which is even more stressful, plus Child Protective Services were called in (b/c he dropped weight so much) which is another headache through all of it. Her other two kids DD6 and DS3 are both healthy and happy, plus she has many many people (including her doc who had just seen DS1 just before he started dropping) who can vouch that she does feed her children, so its more just a headache than a problem. So please keep her and her DS in your prayers and thoughts this week.

I'm going into NOLA tomorrow to help clean/gut/rebuild houses, so I'm gonna call that crosstraining.

Hi Dave - Yes, already registered for the Goofy! Looking forward to it - I plan on taking it at a comfortable speed for the 1/2 and then go a little bit harder (but not pushing it) for the full.

I going to Florida alone, but will be running both races with a friend that had moved to Florida last year.

I say talk to your wife about the trip, just to get an opinion mention it is something that you would really like to do. I did that with my husband......I started reading everyone's race reports and wanted to the the marathon, mentioned to hubby how cool it sounded.......then asked him after a few weeks if he would be okay if I did the race and he was fine with it. He doesn't know about the Goofy, but knows that I will be doing the marathon.

I just couldn't break the news to him about the Goofy. He would think that I'm crazy.

Anyway, be sure to mention to your wife about bringing your princess to the Happiest Place on Earth for a birthday celebration (of course, don't say it infront of the princess).

So if you don't do the marathon in Disney, will you be doing one near home? Your wife might be more into the experience - after seeing all that you are putting forward with all of the training.

Wow - this is a good idea too!

Claire your friends son will definitely be in my prayers. I hope that they find out what's wrong and get CPS out of the picture.

Jodi-great job shaving off your time and good luck on the 12 minute mile. Right now I'd be thrilled with a 14 minute mile.

DH and I are going to eat dinner wait for a bit then go out for a run/walk and we hope to shave some of our time from last week off and I am hoping that I am able to run further than last week. We got a 3 mile walk in today at lunch in 50 minutes so I was happy but hopefully come the next few weeks that will be quicker. DH and I are also going on a bike ride this weekend (23 miles) pending good weather, I can't wait!

Liz-WOW!!! All I can say is WOW! That is so cool you got that phone call. Is really is a great guy! :thumbsup2

I got my certificate today, haven't had a chance to watch the CD yet. I just found out my grandfather died & we have to go to SC this weekend. He was very old & it was definatley his time but my dad is pretty tore up.

I did get my 7 miler in today. My pace was 13:25 :cool1: And I am now a truly dedicated athlete. It started raining when I still had 2.5 miles left & I DIDNT QUIT!! That is so not me. I was determined to finish the whole 7 miles. Luckily it quit after about a mile.

Dave & Kevin-sorry you cant do the Minnie with us. Although since it's for women only I'm hoping for pink race shirts ::MinnieMo

Sorry got to go get everything ready to leave town. Have a great weekend everyone.

Tiff I am so sorry for your loss. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Great job on the run and doing it in the rain!! WTG!!!!
