Wk of Mar 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Since my last meeting with all of you I had admitted to not exercising for 5 days. I continued to be lazy for the next 5 days! :sad2:

SO, my name is Maggie and I didn't exercise for 10 days in a row.

BUT, last monday I hired a sitter to watch the boys and went to the park to run. It was my second r/w outside (the first one stunk). It was warm out, but very windy and I had to work to not let the wind move me. Luckily, I didn't get knocked over like Kevin :) . Anyway, it was hard, I felt miserable, but I still ran 2.5 miles at a 12 min pace.

I have my first 5k this sunday. It's suppose to be cold but sunny. Praying for no wind :rotfl2: - the run is on the Chicago lakefront.

Today, I plan on biking at the gym, and I hope to get another 2.5 in on saturday. Thanks to all of you I will not give up!

:cheer2: Welcome to all the new TEAM members and congrats to all of you that did you races this weekend. You all look awesome! Here is a big way to go to all the other TEAM members, your training looks awesome. :cheer2:

Colleen - I have tried to answer your questions. They are all in the little quote box.

Christa,

Great job on your tri! I am surprised, but not surprised at your comment that this was the hardest thing you have ever done. (Since you did goofy last year). I am still thinking about doing the tri thing next month. And yes, it is much harder than the marathon. I think I am finding it so hard because I am NOT a swimmer. I am going for my third lesson today and see what he can do. When I swim the freestyle I get into such oxygen deprivation I just die after 50 yards. I have much more endurance doing the back stroke where I don't have to worry about my breathing. I mother from school said I needed to swim freestyle and to just keep working on it. (She was insinuating backstroke is for grannies.)
I have a REALLY fast friend that does backstroke. I Thought it was harder than Goofy b/c I was giving it my ALL! I was really way under my normal pace on Goofy and really had a chance to enjoy it. It was also alot hotter for the tri.
1. Did you wear your running shoes on the bike?
I did b/c I don't have extra $$ to buy bike shoes yet. It worked out at T2 b/c I did not have to change shoes.
2. Did you swim from lane to lane or up and back the same lane? The tri I am thinking about doing is 10 lengths of the pool swimming in the adjacent lane each length. So when I switch lanes, do I need to touch then end of the pool in the new lane?
We swam 20 lengths (really widths) of the pool. It was not the way I was used to so it was hard to tell where I was in the lane. I touched the end then went under the ropes to the other lane. PRACTICE THIS! I lost time b/c of this.
3. How were the transition areas? Are there spectators in those areas? What did you do right/wrong with the transitions?
T1 and T2 were only for the racers. Spectators were out side of the area. I always felt disoriented (sp?) during transition. Practice these too...the less you have to change the better.
4. As for a bike, how important is a road bike? I have been riding my old mountian bike and boy is it a lot of work. It is heavy with huge thick bumpy tires, I hate it. I keep thinking how much easier it would be with a real road performance bike. There is a place that will rent performance bikes for the race, I might look into that.
I had a road bike and passed several people on mountain bikes. They were having a hard time. Plus you have to put that thing on a rack (see pix below for my T1 and T2 area)
Colleen
Thanks for all the congrats!

Happy Wednesday! :goodvibes

Well, I'm still sidelined due to a chest cold. I have a doctor's appointment today to see what is going on. The cough can be brutal at times and I know that working out isn't a good idea. I may do my yoga tape just to stay stretched...but I'll play that one by ear. I don't think yoga can be bad for you when you have a cold?! :confused3

Welcome Back TnTsParty!!! Oh, aren't those computer problems such a pain in the butt.

Dave: Sorry to hear your legs still get tender out on the road. I am not an expert....but would orthodics help? I'm sure you tried everything. I just know that my sister had to get special sneaker inserts when her shin splints acted up a few years ago. If you haven't investigated that route, might be worthwhile. However your treadmill run sounds GREAT!!! WTG on those 12 mpms!!!!

PerfectMatch300: Glad to hear those injections weren't as painful. But OUCH!!! They still don't sound fun! :wizard: Some pixie dust that they do the trick!

Jackie: I'm glad you had two good runs this week! How are you doing :grouphug: , I think of you often. And not to worry about the morning race at WDW....you'll have SO MUCH adreneline and excitement it won't feel so early. Anyway, that's what I keep telling myself because I'm not a morning runner either LOL :teeth: .

Tiff: Hope your feeling better today! :goodvibes I sure wish I could get out there and exercise. I feel like such a slug BUT I don't want to end up getting REALLY sick.

Cam: :cheer2: That is SOOO cool about DDs marching band!

Cingoutloud: :woohoo: You are doing so great!!! Keep up the good work!

Good morning everyone!!! :sunny: We've almost made it to Friday. I can't wait until Stephen and I have kids and I can "retire", then I will stop wishing the weeks away and looking forward to the weekend. :teeth: Well, I got half of my workout in last night, the part that I got was great--I REALLY worked my legs and my abs (in fact, I'm still feeling it this morning). I left the weight room to go get a recumbent bike or elliptical machine and as I was leaving the fire alarm went off. We had to evacuate the building and fortunately I had my keys and sweatshirt with me, so I just left the community center and headed for home. When I was about a mile down the road, a fire truck went flying past me with lights blazing. I have no idea if it was a real fire or a false alarm, I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I go and work out. :teeth:

Melissa--Be careful!!!!!! Geez, I thought I was a clutz! ;) I'm glad you're taking some time off from the bike; it sounds like your body could use the healing. Is today mocha and Bible study day?

Cam--Good luck with your daughter. Does she know she might not be going to Europe yet? I still vividly remember my teenage years--I do not envy you the drama when she finds out Europe is a no-go. :p Were you able to get motivated enough last night to work out? I have problems with that myself, I have to either take clothes with me and go directly to the community center or go home and change as soon as I get home to run because if I sit down, I'm not working out. I admit my dedication level isn't anything to brag about! :teeth:

Dave-- :cheer2: :cheer2: on your great workout!!!

I started this an hour ago, I keep getting distracted, so I'll post this now and I'm sure I'll be back!!

I'm sorry Krista, but that is the funniest thing I've heard all day! There is no weekend once you have kids, the work never stops! (but the rewards are worth it)

Cam-- just keep telling yourself the rewards are worth it  ;) When DD was born I realized I had no idea how deep love can be. When she became a teenage I realized I had no idea how angry I could get! I know they will get through it and so will we :grouphug:

I'm so stressed at work. I might have to travel next week to demo something I haven't written yet and don't have a clue how to! Ughhhhh Calgon, take me away...

Maggie-- Keep on track, you can do it :cheer2: My name is Sunny and I haven't been to the gym for 5 days. I can feel my mucles dwindling away... I'm going today no matter how behind I am.

Christa-- Love the tri photos and details. I'm all eyes and ears :listen:

back to the grind

Sunny

Hey everyone!!!

Thank you so much for the welcome, I already feel like part of the group. :grouphug:

I have a few questions if that is OK about my training. I would also like to incorporate weights into my route, I was only going to do upper body since I figured my legs are already getting a great workout. Do you think I should also do weight exercises on my legs??? I am worried about over working them, I am doing alot of walking/jogging to try and get my cardio level up.

What do you all think???

Kim

Amy - Glad your sister seems to be a bit more supportive now, and HEY at least DH wants to keep you company. I have to do all my running solo. :bored: :bored:

Hockeychic/Kim - :welcome:

Cam - I know how you felt yesterday.... 4 hrs of sleep.... I wouldn't even begin to know how to function on just that. :surfweb: On days that the baby has kept me up all night I just end up veggin' on the couch all day.

Krista - Goodness... I hope it was just a false alarm. :firefight I can't imagine sitting there wondering wether my gym was still standing or not!!

Runners Anonymous - SO, my name is Maggie and I didn't exercise for 10 days in a row.

Seriously though I think it happens to everyone. Just as long as you get out there and get back into the swing of things, you can forgive yourself for your lazy times!!

I'll be back later. I am getting ready to head to the gym, but wanted to check in before I forgot.

Kim, yes you should be doing some resistance training for your quads and hamstrings as well. Strong quads and hamstrings help prevent knee problems as well.

Kim, incorporating weight training into your workout is a great idea. I think that working your legs will actually help, as opposed to hurt, your running. If you build up the muscles in your legs it will help to prevent injuries and pain in the knees, shins, calves and hips because you are stabilizing the joints with more powerful muscles. Also, it will help when you begin running hills as this requires a slightly different set of muscle groups than running on flat surface. Other exercises that strengthen your leg muscles include squats and lunges which can be done with our without weights...but they really help to strengthen and tone your running muscles! You just want to be careful about how you time your workouts.

The only suggestion I would give about timing is that maybe you don't want to do weight training the day before and possibly after your long run/walk of the week. I'm not sure what kind of schedule you are on, but once you put in the longer distances that might be too much. I'm sure Sunny can give you loads of advice since she is a big proponent of weight-training :thumbsup2 .

Christa, Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the information! You did sooo well! I know what you mean about giving it your all. I haven't actually doubled up in the same day yet, so I must start doing that, maybe Friday.

MelR, thank you to you too, I think I will rent the road bike. Might as well make my first experience the best it can be! :thumbsup2

As for the back stroke thing, I had another lesson yesterday and he timed me for a 50 yards. My freestyle was 59 seconds, side stroke was 57 and back stroke was 55. As it can see my freestyle is really slow and I don't think I could swim another 200 yds without taking a rest, I just haven't mastered the breathing part and I am so oxygen deprived I am dying. Another thing he said was my legs were "trolling" the bottom of the pool. I just can't get my butt and legs up in a streamline position. He didn't have any advice or recommedations for me. :sad2: So I guess it will be back stroke and let the chips fall where they may.

Oh, Christa, did you say that you touched the end of pool in the lane you were swimming in, then crossed under the ropes and NOT touch the end of the new lane?

Colleen

Sunny--You know I thought having a dog would be easy too, but what do I know?? :rolleyes2 I meant to tell you earlier, I think of you every time I do the leg press. How much weight can you lift? I'm gritting my teeth at 70lbs.

Kim--Definitely incorporate weight lifting into your schedule. Like Colleen said, having stronger leg muscles can actually prevent many knee injuries. I can tell you from experience knee injuries aren't fun. Also, it's beneficial to work your upper body and core. As you get into longer distances, you'll find that having a stronger upper body that can itself up when you're running or walking can help with fatigue. Running or walking bent over (you usually bend over slightly when you are tired) can actually take up precious energy that your body needs to complete the distance. So if you have a strong core (abs/back) and arms then your body won't be so quick to start to slump and you'll save energy. Does that make sense?

Nancy--I'm glad the injections went better this week. Here's some :wizard: for continued recovery.

Jackie--I am so NOT a morning person (yes, I think Judy is  for getting up at 4:30 to walk on the treadmill) and I do all my runs after work in the evenings. Even my long runs, which I do on Saturday, I don't usually do them until 9:00. Saying that, I didn't have any problems getting up and running the half. There is so much adreline and nerves pumping through your system, you won't even know what time it is. You'll be fine!!

Carrie-- :wave2: Haven't seen you on here for a couple of days. Can we talk football for a minute, I saw that Jon Kitna signed with the Lions yesterday. Good luck with that!! :lmao:

Where's Heather?? :confused3 Isn't her 150 mile bike ride coming up soon?

I'm ignoring my work, so I better get off here, I can tell that spring is around the corner, we're slowly starting to get busy at work. Talk to you all later!!

Good morning. Nothing to report as it was a rest day. But I'll tell you, it's nice to have some sunshine this morning. :sunny: It's great for my attitude. :goodvibes

Papa Deuce - My apologies about the "grill thing". I'm a vegetarian so please forgive me. Just my two cents here, but I myself have almost 40 pounds to lose but that's not stopping me. I'm not waiting until I lose the weight to train or plan. I jumped right in and got going. I'm working on the weight too, but training is my priority. If I still have those pesky 40 pounds, well, I'll take them thru the Half with me. I hope I don't but I'm not waiting until they are gone to plan on doing the Half. So let's not say you're "hoping" to be in shape to do the Half. Let's change that to you ARE doing the Half and that's that. OK that's Honeibee's motivational speech for today. :p

Nancy - YAY for your knees! I'm glad the injections weren't quite as bad! Oh I'm so used to getting up early for the horses that it doesn't even phase me to get up at 4:30am anymore. I kinda think it might be an advantage when I have to be at the starting line at 6. Thank you very much for your kind comments. :goodvibes I am determined to do this, for once in my life. Plus I'll just DIE of embarrassment if I get swept.

Dave - Wow! :woohoo: You are really booking! Guess I won't be keeping pace with you any time soon. You're doing fabulous! I have no advice about your shins but wonder about your running shoes. Maybe you need something with more absorption.

Maggie - How old are your boys? Are they old enough to go to the park with you? Maybe if everyone was involved that might be motivating for you.

Amy - I hope you don't have bronchitis. I always get it whenever I get a cold. My manager is actually walking around work here coughing and hacking. If I get something from him I will NOT be happy. We are going on our cruise in about three weeks.

Sunny - Calgon for you! :flower1:

Cam - You're DD stories scare me. I have four stepchildren, two boys 16 & 14, and two girls 10 & 12. We don't have custody but we have them every other weekend and every Thursday night. It make it kind of difficult, since they are not with us all the time. Thank goodness they still all have respect for me. That might have something to do with my threatening to throw them in the manure dumpster every time they misbehave. And they know I MEAN IT! Cause I would. They listen to me and are pretty well behaved most of the time. But I can see it coming, especially with the boys... BTW I told DH this morning that next year its either going to be the Minnie or the DL Half.....But secretly I was thinking "or maybe both".

Judy

:wave2:

Wow you guys are inspiring!

I went to the gym last night. I was scheduled for three miles on the TM, but it was packed which meant that you are suppose to limit yourself to 30 minutes. I was a good girl and gave up my TM at 30 min so I only a tiny bit over two miles. I did do my weight training too.

I keep reading abouot "not dieting" while training, but I thought I would pass on something my MD said when I asked her about this (she runs a lot) As she pointed out, the goal is MORE calories expended than calores taken in. So if you workout you can take in more. She says she would expect me to lose weight if I eat right and excersise. We are talking moderate to slow weight loss, not a "I need to lose 10lbs next week" diet here, more of your lifestyle change.

Cam, I hope your DD issues work themselves out. I chaperoned a group of teen girls to Europe last summer. I was really worried about a couple of them trying to "escape" and party, but I had no issues. (I think they really believed me when I said ONE slip up and home you go at parent's expense!) Overall the girls parents all reported back to me that it was a great learning experience for thier girls....

I am at home today listening to the electrician try to wire a ceiling fan. (This is going to be expensive!)

Thank you all for the advice.

I will start with some light lower body training and work up to more. I really have to stick with my cardio, my lung power just isn't there, it gives out before my legs.

Thanks again for the info

Good morning, all! Thank you so much to everyone for your compassion and good wishes for DD17. I had hoped that last night's chat among the three of us would have given me some comfort level and pushed us along toward deciding that we wouldn't cancel the Europe trip, but it didn't. I called and withdrew her this morning. We told DD it was for 3 reasons: (1) If she exhibits such self-endangering behavior here, with adult supervision, we'd be very concerned for her safety in Europe with less supervision; (2) she had been warned that continued bad judgment would result in loss of the Europe trip because our first concern is for her safety and we had no comfort level that she would keep herself safe; and (3) she was unwilling to make a commitment to being more responsible in order to earn trust and independence and since today was the "drop dead" date and we had given her since January 11 (our little chat after she snuck out of the house at 3:30 am while we were away at the 1/2) to demonstrate responsibility, it was time to withdraw.

Howard is adamant that we have to be the parents and we have to follow through and that we did not take anything away from her, she did. I guess, in effect, she surrendered it. It was handed to her on a silver platter and she gave it up. This may be the most difficult decision we've ever made for her sake. Howard says that staying home and working and earning freedom and demonstrating responsibility will be more of a growing experience for her. If circumstances warrant, she could have another similar opportunity in the framework of study abroad or winterim abroad.

I am having a really rough day. Can you tell? I really do appreciate the support.

I'm glad I went to the gym last night. At least at the end of the day, I felt like I'd done something edifying. I ended up doing just strength training -- one whole circuit of upper and lower body with 3x8 on each.

Hoping to do a 5K this Saturday, just to challenge myself. My goal would be to do w3/j2 for the whole thing. It's funny how motivated and inspired I can feel sitting at my desk and reading of all your efforts. But the reality of my abilities is quite different when I get out there on the course. Oh, well, at least I am out there on the course. :teeth:

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the downer post. It's just hard being the mom.

Hey there Keenercam,

I can relate, I have a 16 year old DS and 13 going on 30 DD. Fortunatley DS has not gone for his licence yet so we have a little control but teenagers can be tough. Somedays I would like to go back to the days when the biggest crisis was....she's looking out my window.....lol....

Hang in there...it does get better right???

Kim

Cam - loads of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your difficult time. I agree with Howard's sentiments completely and even though you know you're doing the right thing, it doesn't make it any easier on your heart. :grouphug:

Best of luck on the 5k this weekend if you decide to make a go of it.

Sending out the Minnie registration form today. Thank you!!

Oh Cam.....

I have to say, I totally agree with Howard's thinking.

I know that doesn't make it any easier. But I think he's spot on.

Oh Cam....
