Wk of Mar 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

:rockband: MEL...2 races?!!! :worship: That is sooo cool. I'm glad you're okay after your crashes (ouch!!). Wow girl...you seriously rock! :cheer2: And you definitely have to post those race pics!

Karen: WELCOME!!! :wave2: Glad you are joining us :).

Sunny: I still think I'm tooooo slow for your RTB race. I'd have to kick up my miles a bunch (which I should be doing by September) AND kick-up my speed. Still sounds like fun....but I'll wait to see if the speed-demons sign up for you first. I'll just hang back and wait to see how your team develops. I think I'd be a bit of a detriment :confused3 . LOL!

You need Mel and Sarah....those rockin' adventure racers!!! :goodvibes

Here I am, catching up on last week and this instead of being outdoors doing some heavy yardwork that needs doing. Gotta get it done today because I go for round 2 of my knee injections tomorrow. More really big needles, I am not looking forward to that! :earseek: While I am not supposed to see any real results for 4=6 weeks, I do think I see some difference. My popping knees have not been waking me up 3-4 times each night since my first round of injections last week so I am not always as exhausted as I have been.

I have been doing some swimming this week to get in a good workout that is easier on the knees. I have not been swimming at all since we moved this past Sept, then it got cold and I got a nasty bacterial infection on my left arm that did not belong in the pool. I have been swimming 1000 meters at what for me is a fairly slow time of 30 min, but I am OK with that for now. Did 500 meters in 14:10 yesterday and would have been even better if I would make myself do flip turns but I am just too lazy for that. Also stopped twice to get the water out of my goggles. Could not get them adjusted right. There were some advantages to the "good old days" when we didn't even HAVE goggles - but then again the permanantly bloodshot eyes weren't very pretty!

Big congrats to all our weekend racers!

Christa, great job on your Tri! Thanks for the pics.

MelR, Wow! 2 races! You really can navigate!

Lynne and Sunny, Grteat job on your half, Lynne, a PB too!

Krista, :wizard: PD for your knee!

Karen, WELCOME!

Kathy, we're planning a WDW fix next week, too. Maybe we will see you there. I don't know when we will be down yet but it's been too long so I need a WDW day soon.

Here are a couple of race pics. Look at those terrible boats!! You really can't tell how windy it is in these pics. The hills in the background are some of the areas where we biked and trekked.

Hi all!! Happy Monday! I have been feeling so blecky the last 2 days I havent done anything exercise wise. I figured better to miss my SR & get better faster.

Christa-you rocked!!!! That was an awesome time!

Karen-welcome!Sounds like you're doing great already! That's how I got started with this-I saw the thread with people talking about walking it & thought "hey, I could do that". Believe me you will love it! And this group helped me get to the start line & accross the finish line.

Mel-wow you are superwoman!

Nancy-good luck at the Dr. You're doing great with the swimming.

Judy-I've been wondering the same thing. Did she drop of the planet? Good luck with the mud :teeth:

Amy-you are doing awesome  Don't let them bring you down. Just keep on, keepin on & you will get there. Not everyone gets black toes! Especially if you have good shoes. You are doing great :thumbsup2

Krista_ :wizard: for your knee. Sounds like you have a good plan to take it easy & not hurt it any more.

Waaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!! My shoe has been discontinued! I cannot believe what I went through to find the perfect shoe! You alllllll may remember my whining last year as I looked and looked and looked for the perfect shoe and then took a home equity loan to buy them. THEN! Just when it was time to order the next pair to break in for the Minnie, they end up on the endangered species list and I immediately called roadrunnersports to order them, only to find my size is not available! Waaaaaahhhhhh!!

Okay, I'm done. Nothing to do but move on. I took the operator's recommendation and ordered what is supposed to be the replacement. Which I might note looks NOTHING LIKE MY SHOE!!!!! And it's ugly to boot! Black and grey and white with YELLOW trim! What's with that? It will clash with all my workout clothes. Bummer.

So, how are you all today? I haven't had time to read everything but am thrilled to gather that everyone that did events this weekend did well. :thumbsup2

Thanks to everyone who send Howard good WISHes. He was thrilled to finish under 2 hours -- chip time 1:59:33 (9:08 pace). It was raining torrentially at the start, though not as cold as it could have been. Rained off and on throughout. DS12 and I were able to see him start and finish and at 2 different points on the course, though driving around town to find ways to get close enough to the course to cheer for him sounded like one of Melissa's adventure races. He said the course had some really BFH's including most of the last mile. Now, he'll turn his attention to training for the Delaware Marathon in May.

I'd love to get a 5K in and there is one this weekend that I'd love to do, but something happened to my knee on my LW Saturday. Whatever that thing is that runs up the back of your knee on the outside that feels like a tendon or something ( :confused3 ) hurts like heck. Of course, wearing heels today probably didn't help. I don't have time to research what that body part is, how I might have hurt it, or how to cure it. But it is making me very reluctant to try to wog a 5K Saturday. Then again, my new shoes are coming along with some new, comfy undergarments and a potentially cute and comfy outfit, so that might actually motivate me! Pathetic, I know.

Okay, I am going to try to get some work done so that I can go to the gym and work on my breathing on the elliptical -- hopefully that won't further hurt my knee.

BTW -- if anyone is doing the Minnie but hasn't posted recently on the thread, come and check in, as we all get to know each other better. :cloud9:

Good evening all!

Congrats on everyone's races this weekend!! Sounds like everyone did quite well!

I, however, did nothing this weekend. :guilty: I will (I WILL) get back in the saddle this week. If I keep it going at this rate, I will be saying that in November.... and then I will really be in trouble.

I got out there this evening after work.... planned three miles. We are currently under high wind warnings, but I figured that it would be a tough three miles. I got about one mile in and all of a sudden WHOOSH! a gigantic just of wind knocked me off course, into the curb and then fell down into someone's yard. :rolleyes2 I then decided to come home.

So in my year of running I have:
-- Slipped and fallen in icy water, but managed to save my Garmin!
-- Fell into step with and ran several miles with an exotic dancer in Toronto who was training for her first marathon
-- And now literally knocked down by gale force winds.

(Sigh) At least I finished the marathon without incident..... :thumbsup2

Happy training all!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

I feel for you! I have been down this road.. Plus every shoe that has EVER worked for me has been UGLY (Actually I have Brooks right now that aren't bad, but the Nike before them was UGLY)

Ok, well today I went to the gym planning on just doing weights, then decided I felt pretty good so I would go ahead and do my 3 miles. Finished in 28m2s. Not too shabby. I did have a bit of cramping in my calves still, but no pain in my shins, which is good. I think I realized why I was hurting so bad on Saturdays run. I had been used to running 2 miles 3 times a week, total of 6 miles. Last week I actually ran 13, definately alot more than 10%!! So here is my plan for this week, today 3, wednesday 2, and Friday 4. That is much better!! I am also gonna have to make a point to stretch my calves whenever I think about it.

I actually got a wonderful comment from a lady at the gym today. As I was getting my kids out of the car she came up and asked me if I ran the River Run here in Jacksonville, which I didn't, and I told her so, but told her I was planning to run the Disney Marathon in January. She told me she was so jealous, that she has seen me run around the track at the gym and that I made it look so easy!! :cool1: I just wish it felt so easy!!

Congrats to Lynne, Sunny, Lisa, Christa, Colleen, Dena all of our racers this weekend! Do we have a fabulous team here or what? :cheer2:

Welcome Papa! Glad you made it over this way! Don't feel like you have to be able to run the half or even half a step now. It's okay to start out walking and building your endurance before you start running. Sometimes baby steps work best.

Welcome Carol! We'll look forward to seeing you at Minnie...and the half :rolleyes1

Dena...we were in Gainesville this weekend and saw live coverage of the Gate River Run! Congrats on your 12 min mile!

Claire...I'll see what I can do with the list. I have to admit I haven't had as much time to keep it up this year as I did last, so I'll have to build it up a bit. The difficult part will be near the end of the year, when we have over 100 people on the list, but many that haven't posted in awhile. Never know if they're still with us and lurking or if they've given up.

Kevin...Auntie Em...Auntie Em! :lmao:

Cam...have you looked for your shoes on other websites? I buy a lot from RRS, but they don't always have all the colors or sizes available. Another website might still have a few pairs left in what you need.

MelR...I agree...inflatable boats are a waste. I have a patient who's boats I envy. She's in her 70's and has a couple 'space-age polymer' boats that weigh only 30 or 40 pounds.

Krista... :wizard: for your knee!

Tiff...when's your tri?

Nancy...is it time for noodle soup again? :teeth:

Paging Dr. Lynne...I have self-diagnosed my leg problem...looks like pretty classic plantar fasciitis. Guess who hasn't stretched after a run in...oh...maybe 6 months or so :rolleyes1 I've started calf stretches and icing...oh, and started training for Minnie today (I can rest it in May :rolleyes1 ) Seriously though, it seems mild at this point so I'm not going to push too hard, but I do want to train for R/W the Minnie instead of W/R. so...2.98 miles tonight at a 13:56 pace...nice and easy, no land speed records tonight :thumbsup2 Anyone with any plantar fasciitis recommendations?

Howard - You are FAST! :thumbsup2

Melissa - Loved the pix. Congrats!

Here are a few more pix.

Me running...about 200 yrds from the finish! I look like I am going to die!

My DH said something that made me think tonight and I wanted to ask all my fellow WISHers what they think...

I am currently "training to train" and trying to lose my extra weight before I really start training for the 1/2. I'm not really focusing on running too much yet, just a lot of cardio and some weights. Should I be JUST running or should I stay with my routine and only run a little now until I lose the weight and then start running hardcore? :confused3

I am definitely under the 15:00 pace but I want to run most of the 1/2. I work out pretty intensely so I reason that anything to get my cardivascular in better shape will help me run without having a heart attack! :lmao:

So what do you all think? Am I on the right track with running a little and focusing just on anything to lose the weight right now or should I just run run run run run?

Thanks in advance! :grouphug:

Nancy...is it time for noodle soup again? :teeth:

:cool1: :rotfl2: No noodles in the soup yet! Too cold in the pool for them! They are all in the heated indoor pool, which is why I don't swim there. Also, the indoor pool is not a lap pool and is way to small. I swam 3 days this week and each time I was the only one in for most of my swim.

Today I did 2/3 of a tri - I rode my bike the long way to the pool (just over 5 miles), then swam 1000 meters. I felt pretty good on the bike today and swam my best time since last fall by 2 minutes. My 1000 meters today was just under 28 min and on my first pool day Sat I was just over 30 min. I also practiced some flip turns between 500 meter sets which I should be doing all the time but I am too lazy to do now and can't do during the summer when the pool is literally full of senior noodle soup! For those of you who may not know senior noodle soup, it's a lot of sr. citizens lounging on pool noodles in water that is way too warm to swim in anyway, and are always drifting into my lap lane.

As I said eariler, tomorrow is round 2 of my knee injections. More huge needles, more pain, but I am seeing results. :yay:

Christa, Melissa, thanks for the pictures.

Cam, please tell Howard congrats on his race since it seems he doesn't get here very often himself. Sorry about your discontinued shoes.

Kevin, sounds like you had a run that literally blew you away! Did you try running with that wind at your back? Think of what a time you might have done with gale force winds pushing you along! No really, just joking! Glad you came in and did not get hurt in your fall.

Papa Deuce - Welcome! :wave2: I'm glad you are joining us. The support and encouragement around here is amazing! I certainly know you from other Boards. I enjoy your posts very much. So, if your just starting out, join the club! We have lots of beginners here. Don't worry about only being able to run 300 feet. Last August I had ACL replacement surgery and couldn't even WALK. Now I'm on my way to the 2007 Half. Walking it, that is. But if you knew how much of a "non-athlete" I have been all my life, well, you'd know how AMAZING this is!

Thanks Judy. I ws able to do manybe another 25 feet on my second attempt. I've been in and out of shape many times but this is the worst so far.

I blame my kids... :lmao:

Christa -- Great pix! You look like you are having fun!

Nancy -- Good luck with your injections. Congrats on doing 2/3 of a tri :teeth:

Judy -- YES! I could definitely see doing the Minnie again next May, assuming it is as enjoyable as I expect it will be.

CarolA -- :welcome:

Mel -- Thanks for the advice. I did go looking and found my shoes on runningshoes.com and ordered a pair. Now, I'll have two new pairs of shoes arriving in the next week. The good thing about the new ones from roadrunnersports, is that I can try them out and return them within 45 days if I don't like them -- and no cost to ship them back. It was worth joining their running club for that benefit and the free shipping and the 10% off. I was thrilled that they had my socks in stock, too, as I think those may be on the endangered list, too.

Well, I am up late. DD17 is driving us completely crazy in her quest for independence and freedom. I am hoping no one here has any idea what this is like. It is now 2:30 am and I can't sleep after her little adventure of sneaking out in her car at about 11:30 and being gone over an hour "just driving" because she couldn't sleep and didn't want to "just lay there." :confused3 OMG she is going to give me a nervous breakdown. (Notice I didn't even joke about her giving me a heart attack) I think I'd rather go back to stressing about shoes. Ugly shoes.

Oh, BTW, I did over 2.3 miles on level 4 on the elliptical tonight in 30 minutes. I remember when I could barely get through 5 minutes at around 3 mph speed. Oh the difference a year makes! Still haven't perfected the breathing thing, but I am working on it.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I had a great workout yesterday! I ran for 30 min on the treadmill yesterday, and did 2 miles at 12:30 mpm pace! Whoo hoo, I felt really good. I am definitely ahead of my "Learn to Run" program though. That schedule had me walking for 30 min which is where I started about 6 weeks ago. That's OK, I still am looking forward to having the group.

When I went for a hike with my DD8 princess: on Sunday we were talking about running, and she said she wanted to run races too and wanted to train with me. So when I got home from my workout yesterday she begged me to go running with her. After dinner, I then took my princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, out for a run around the block. It was a lot of fun, and really cute too. Get those kids WISH team shirts ready. BTW - where do I get a WISH shirt?

OK, I'm going to go back and reply to other people now.

Still waking up with my coffee... :surfweb: Judy, you're probably working out right now or maybe even done. How's Gregory Peck doing?

Christa - WTG on the triathalon! :thumbsup2 Thanks for posting the pictures. That is an awesome time, and it sounds like you had a great experience. In your pictures you look really happy! Good for you.

MelR - you are amazing. :worship: 2 races in one weekend? Whoa... yeah, those little rubber dingys you guys had looked like they would be incredibly hard to paddle. Gotta say, I like your matching team shirts too. Very stylish.

Sunny and Lynne - way to go on the Run to Remember! :thumbsup2 Sounds like you represented our WISH team very, very well. Uuummm, where do I get a team shirt? How's Lisa/MickeySP doing?

Jodi - good for you for doing the MS walk. I had mentioned before I have a loved one in my family with MS. :thanks: It's such a worthy cause. You must be excited for your first 5k. I think I'm going to have my 1st race in May too. I can't wait. It feels good to know that I will be trained and ready for that race.

Krista - I am so sorry to hear about your knee. Here's some PD :wizard: :wizard: to make sure you recover in time for the Flying Pig. Here's a Steeler remedy. Ice your knee and wrap it up with a "Terrible Towel" that's gotta have some sort of magic in it too.

Amy - that is so discouraging the reaction of your family. You are doing so awesome with your training too! You're already doing 10.5 mpm! That is amazing. Try not to worry about it, and get your support from your WISH team. Hopefully, when they see how committed you are to this they will come around.

CarolA and kareneast - Welcome! :welcome: You guys both rock! WTG in taking control of your lives. That's what I'm trying to do too.

Nancy - I hope your knee injections go well. It sounds like it's having some positive effects. :wizard: :wizard:

TiffJ - Here's some PD :wizard: :wizard: to help you get over your blahs.

Cam - whoo, Howard was smokin out there on his run. Great job. Sorry to hear about the shoes. Oh Cam, I hope DD17 made it back safely. Is this what I have to look forward too with my princesses princess: princess:?

Kevin - I loved your story about getting blown off your course. Wow, that must have been some strong winds. Good luck getting back on track with your running and training.

andromedaslove/Dana? - Wow, I am really impressed with your pace right now. You're already at sub-10 mpm! Whoo hoo... I'm hopin' to get down there soon.

Good morning everyone!! :sunny: I took a rest day yesterday, so nothing to report, just wanted to say hi. :wave2: I am SO mad at Stephen. He is in Orlando for work and he went ESPN Club for dinner last night and walked along the Board Walk and watched the end of Illuminations!!!  I have the meanest husband ever!!!!   But he did buy me a present and we are going to WDW in 2 months, so I guess I can't complain TOO much. :teeth:

Cam--You have pain on the outside of your knee? Does it start on the outside and then work it's way to the middle of the back of your knee? It sounds to me like you have IT Band Syndrome, which is what I have. Mine starts about 3 miles into my run and when I walk, it stops hurting, but when I run, there it is again. It's caused by over training, running or walking on crowned surfaces (like the road or a track) and wearing the wrong shoes. Check out www.runningtimes.com for signs of IT Band Syndrome and stretches to strengthen the knee. Once you get on the site, go to Health, and then scroll down. I was on there last night printing out exercises. Oh, and the ellipitical is supposedly the best machine to use when you have a knee injury because you are still getting a heck of a workout, but there's no impact on your knee. When Stephen had runners knee, he used the ellipitical every day and didn't lose one ounce of fitness.

Dave--HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!! That sounds like the perfect remedy!! And while I'm icing my leg, I can watch highlights of their Super Bowl victory! :cheer2:

Melissa--You did 2 races over the weekend?? Wow!! I guess your booty is feeling better!! :teeth:

Nancy-- pixiedust: for your knees!! I hope the needles aren't TOO big!

Mel--Rest your foot!! Have you seen those plantar fasciitis socks? There's always ads in the back of Runners World for them. I can look at Runners World when I get home tonight and get the site for the company who makes them.

Dana--You go girl!! :woohoo:

Christa--Great pictures!! What's your next conquest? Tell Bree we said hi and that we miss her!!

Amy--Sorry that you're family isn't being very supportive right now. I'm very lucky, my husband Stephen (who lurks and sometimes posts) runs too, he did the Disney Full and my Mom walked the half. Next year, Stephen is going Goofy, I'm doing the full, and my parents are both walking the half. Just remember that even though we aren't blood, WISH is your family too and we'll gladly be your support group. :grouphug:

Kevin--You better start putting weights in your pockets!! :lmao:

Karen, CarolA, and Papa Deuce-- :welcome:

I better get to work. I'm sure I'll be back tonight after my workout.

Krista - not only is my booty not feeling better, I crashed my bike on it hard!!! Now my left booty has some overuse injury and my right booty has a HUGE bruise!!! (no pics to post on that one!) It was a pretty impressive bike crash though, I ended up w/ the bike all the way on top of me. I bloodied up my r elbow, and r and l knees and bruised my booty and r shoulder. I usually have phil to race w/ me so after i crashed, i laid on the ground for a little while just to decide if i wanted to get back up and finish racing! I generally rely on his sympathy to make me feel a little better!

Dave - thanks for the compliment about the matching shirts. we actually talked a local outdoor store into giving us free stuff (including socks) and selling matching jerseys to us below cost! (we were a sponsored team, well sortof) I think my husband thought it was pretty funny that i went into the store and begged for free stuff (my standards were pretty low too!)

Cam- maybe you could encourage dd to start running w/ you to relieve stress :confused3

must take boy to school. I'm not sure what phil and i will be doing today

Hi there! Me again! I have not fallen off the face of the earth...althought there are days when I think I would like to. I have been a very BUSY gal!

My days have been filled with job hunting, getting ready to put the house on the market, finding a realtor, caring for a sick puppy, more job hunting and interviews and training. It is just crazy round here. I can't believe I have a race coming up on the first! I am getting pretty excited about that!!

Can anybody help with my blister problem? I think I have tried EVERYTHING!! I have great shoes, Thorlo running socks, I use LOTS of body Glide on my feet and teos. I have taped, mole skinned and Blister Sheilded to no avail. I seem to get the nansty buggers on my little toe on my left foot ( my ankle is fused in 2 places ont his foot) and sometimes the toe next to it. But the little toe is by far the worst. Then of all places, I have a new blister on the back left side of my heel? :confused3 In a word, there is LOTS of pain with these things. ANy ideas on what I can further do to try to prevent them?

Shirts! I know you guys are all asking about them. I will work on that after my Columbus race, I promise! I want to make sure that The Penguin is OK with them and that we won't be geting in any trouble with them. But as soon as I get back from Columbus, I will work on that project! I promise!

Sounds like everybody is moving along with their training. I am glad today is a rest day for me. I put in 4 miles Saturday, 10 Sunday and 3 yesterday! Kevin, I hear your pain! I have no idea why I got up early and did my walk, but I did. It was 60, sunny and not too windy when I left at 7:30 am. By 9, the wind was blowing trees over, shingles off of some roofs. I was so glad to have my walk done before all this started. Then to boot, it got REALLY cold. Glad you weren't hurt and are able to laugh about it now!

Cam, sorry about your shoes! That really stinks. I am glad that you were able to find a pair....any luck on finding maybe one or two more? Now that they are discontinued, maybe they will be on sale? Wouldn't that be nice?

Dave, sounds like oyu have some little runners in the making! What fun! I am glad that just about everybody in your family is sharingin your enthusiasim. Any chance you can get your wife on board too? I finally talked Greg into doing the Chicago Distance Classic with me......he said yes and to even go ahead and register him :teeth: I think I will wait to make sure he gets on a few training walks before I really register him. And I think we are going on a fild trip to the shoe store so he can get some shoes too! I am pretty excited about all of this!

Nancy, Noodle Soup! :lmao: Too funny! Good job on your 2/3 tri! What ambition. I was thinking the other day that I wished I had a bike. Maybe when we move and have more room, I will have to get a bike! I have a whole list of torture devices I would like to get....a dreadmill, a recumbant bike....ya know, more stuff to clutter up the basement for the NEXT time we move :rotfl:

Christa, WTG!! Great job! And thanks for sharing your pictures. You do not look like you are going to die. I can't believe that every picture of you I have seen, you always have that HUGE smile on your face! You rock! Keep up the good work!

Mel, 2 races in one weekend! Are you crazy? Congrats on all your accomplishments! That is so cool! BTW, thanks for the heads up on the spsort beans! I  them!! They are so much better than Gu!

Mel, Sunny, Lynne and Lisa, sounds like you gals all had some great races! Job well done!! Keep up the good work!

I know that I have missed a bunch of you...but alas, my puter time is up. Know that I am thinking about all of you though! Sending lots of :cool1: :cheer2: and :wizard: to everybody here!!

Happy training!!

Liz

Christa,

Great job on your tri! I am surprised, but not surprised at your comment that this was the hardest thing you have ever done. (Since you did goofy last year). I am still thinking about doing the tri thing next month. And yes, it is much harder than the marathon. I think I am finding it so hard because I am NOT a swimmer. I am going for my third lesson today and see what he can do. When I swim the freestyle I get into such oxygen deprivation I just die after 50 yards. I have much more endurance doing the back stroke where I don't have to worry about my breathing. I mother from school said I needed to swim freestyle and to just keep working on it. (She was insinuating backstroke is for grannies.)

A few questions:

1. Did you wear your running shoes on the bike?

2. Did you swim from lane to lane or up and back the same lane? The tri I am thinking about doing is 10 lengths of the pool swimming in the adjacent lane each length. So when I switch lanes, do I need to touch then end of the pool in the new lane?

3. How were the transition areas? Are there spectators in those areas? What did you do right/wrong with the transitions?

4. As for a bike, how important is a road bike? I have been riding my old mountian bike and boy is it a lot of work. It is heavy with huge thick bumpy tires, I hate it. I keep thinking how much easier it would be with a real road performance bike. There is a place that will rent performance bikes for the race, I might look into that.
