Wk of Mar 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Tracy & I (she's my bestest friend that's coming with me) have been neurotically checking airfare for the last several weeks. Hoping for a Southwest cheapy fare. By this Friday I was just going to go ahead & buy something. Well today is my lucky day~~~~$49 each way :cool1: That cuts my airfare budget in half & give me more for DTD :teeth: Its a great day everyone!

Good morning!! :sunny: Okay, so don't laugh at me, but last night for my cross training, I did Richard Simmons' "Sweatin' to the Oldies 2". I LOVE Richard Simmons!!  It was a really good, low impact work out and believe it or not I was tired when it was over. One thing that was cool about doing it was bringing back memories, my Mom and I used to do "Sweatin' to the Oldies" together when I was in high school and my college roommate and I did it together too. So I was getting a work out while walking down memory lane and of course rocking out to the oldies!! :rockband: Tonight is back to the Community Center for the stationary bike (or maybe elliptical) and weights. That is if the Community Center is still standing!!

Dave--I am ALWAYS ready to talk football. Is it August yet?? I'm not very happy about Randle El. I really, really like him. I think the Steelers are going to regret losing him next season. He is a MAJOR equation in their beloved trick plays and I think we're really going to miss his kick-off returns and the awesome field position he almost always gets us. I'm going to miss him off the field too, from what I can tell, he was a team leader and a lot of the younger guys looked up to him. I just heard that we lost Kimo von Olhaffon too. Sigh.

Sunny--So you're one of those people who load up the leg press with 1000 lbs and then leave it for us weaklings to unload!! :furious: :furious: :furious: ;) I do the big girl leg press in the weight room, so if I'm lifting 50-70 lbs (I usually do 10 lifts at 70 and 20 lifts at 50), then I'm really lifting 150-170lbs?? Cool! :thumbsup2 And since you are the weight lifting guru, I'll ask you a question. It takes 48 hours for muscles to rebuild themselves, right? I worked my legs pretty good on Tuesday withe leg press and a couple other weight machines (I don't know what any of them are called), in fact I'm still feeling effects today, so will I be okay to lift weights this afternoon, almost exactly 48 hours later? Should I do the same amount of reps and weight or should I do less?

Amy-- :wizard: for your bronchitis. Don't worry about running, just get yourself better!!

Melissa--I'm so glad that Hines will be fully trained by the time we bring a baby into the mix. We aren't even going to start trying until after the marathon, so the earliest we would even have a baby would be fall 2007. By that time Hines will be 2 1/2 and will have been in obedience training and personal protection training for 2 years, so he SHOULD be fully trained. Our fence was finished yesterday, so he is a VERY happy puppy. :dog2: At first he wasn't sure about staying outside when Mom went in, but by the end of the night, I had to bribe him with treats to get him in the house. The only bad part about the fence is at night, Hines is so black that you literally cannot see him at night. How's the boy? Do you have some adventures planned for next week? I think you are definitely the coolest mom. :teeth:

Mel--Another American Idol fan?? Who do you love? Chris is my man!! And why in the world was Kevin not in the bottom 3??!! GRRRR!!!!!!

I better start working. Today and tomorrow is our open house at work, I'm in charge of making caramel corn!! I know I'm going to make myself sick eating. Every type of food you can think of from a carnival or amusement park will be made today. Yum!! I'll let you know how much weight I've gained by tomorrow night!!

I did a 2 mile "brisk" or at least "brisk" walk for me did 1 mile in 14:34 mins and finished 2 miles in 29:08 mins. I had no idea how fast I walked so I decided to time it out and work on my distance as well as time. I also incorporated a jog at the end....just about killed me..but I did it :thumbsup2
Kim

Kim, that is awesome!! Good work. :cheer2: Next time the jog will be a little easier!

No, no, no!!!!!! I never leave weights on the leg press. I leave the pin in the nautilus leg press on the max weight! That only requires the next user to reach down lower to adjust the pin. Believe me, I find it very rude when people leave the machines loaded with plates.

As far as when to lift again, I usually do lower body weights 3 days apart. I also feel the effects long after. I think its safe to lift again 48 hours later, but if its more comfortable to wait another day, why not? GOod luck!

Cam! OMG! That internet story is terrifying. Mine wasn't quite so careless with the internet but I ended up putting Spectorsoft monitoring software on her pc. It recorded every chat session and url visited. I told her it was there. She still did some pretty stupid things. Its such a scarey world.

Jodi-- I don't think I ever responded to your reaching WW goal. :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Congrats! :thumbsup2 That is such a great accomplishment. You are making such great progress with your fitness goals. Way to go! :cool1:

Parents: If you are worried about your kids' internet usage, www.spectrosoft.com software works very well to monitor their usage. It has a "stealth" mode which is completely invisible to the user if that is necessary to you. I highly recommend it. It also has settings to block certain usage. It has a screen capture feature that allows you to watch their computer session like a movie. It takes a screen capture every 5 seconds or so. It seems like a huge violation of privacy until you find yourself scared for your childs safety.

Whew!!! I knew that didn't sound like you!! I would DEFINITELY leave my pin in the nautilus weights. Just to let everyone know what I hard mama I was!! ;) I'll let you know how tonight goes!!

Good morning all!!

Why, oh why do things get really really busy when I want to really start training again?!? :confused3 I am on the road to Arkansas next week, so at least the weather will be nice to run. I find myself tweaking my training schedule here and there due to work and class stuff... but thankfully my plate gets much less full in just 6 short weeks.

I managed really good crosstraining workouts Tuesday and Wednesday. I should be doing speedwork today and then actually getting outside on the road tomorrow morning for a 3 miler, followed by a 10K Saturday morning.

Real quick shout-outs to a few people:

:welcome: to all the new folks. Goodness, we sure are getting to be a large group.

Cam- :grouphug:

Kim- I would recommend not ignoring lower body weight workouts- maybe 1-2 times per week. I would not recommend doing them the day before any long runs, but I never really had an issue doing them on the same day or before midweek runs. Of course, your mileage will vary. One thing you may want to work on first, if you are new to running and/or lifting is trying to even the strength in your hamstrings and quads. Strong quads + weak hamstrings = hamstring problems.

Carol- I think your MD makes a great point. When I was training for the full last year, I dropped about 10 pounds just from the sheer exersice alone over 20 weeks. I think that "active" dieting should be avoided since you'll be at a loss for energy, but most people will see some weight come off.

OK, back to the daily grind.
Happy training all!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Sunny - 520?!! Man I need to see a picture of your legs. Right now I can only do130lbs for 3 sets of 10. I can't even begin to imagine 520.

Mel - I LOVE Discover Cove!! :thumbsup2 My DH and I have sworn that one our kids are old enough that we are definately taking them.

Kim - Congrats on the walk/jog, I really believe that you can do this too!!

Well, I am having a really hard day ... actually started last night. I know exactly what you guys mean when you talk about protecting your kids.Right after my oldest son was born (he's almost 5 now) my DH and I took custody of my 10 year old cousin. His mother was a drunk and a drug addict, and abandoned him.He lived with us for 4 years, until my son told me that his "bubba" had molested him. We immediately moved him out of the home and contacted the police. Things had never been great while he lived with us, it truly was a constant struggle to deal with him, his constant defiance, and lying. He always had a temper, and one day while 8 months pregnant with my youngest I found him holding down our 1 yr old lab punhcing him, we tried to work through that, but when he crossed that line with my son he was gone. However, I dont think any of us wanted to believe that he was this horrible person, so I think at times we convinced ourselves that he could be helped. He moved in with my Mother, and we all stood up for him in court asking that the judge not send him to jail, we all believed that the kind of help he needed couldn't be found there. So the judge suspended his sentence and ordered him into counseling. The problem is he hasn't changed. He has become agressive towards my Mom, he never hit her or anything but they were arguing in the car and he started punching her dash board. He refuses to do anything she asks him to, and is constantly arguing and lying. He has been warned on several different occasions that he has to treat her with respect or else he can't live there, and that he should be thankful she was willing to take him because otherwise he would have been sent to jail. We have tried to explain how much she has given up just to help him, I mean she isn't even able to see her grandkids because she always has him with her. Well, last night was the final straw. She asked him to help her water the flowers and he refused, flat out told her he didn't have to do anything that she asked him to. After a while of fighting she told him that if he can't do what he is told then he can not live there anymore, and he told her that if anyone came to take him away from that house that he would take a knife and kill them. My DH has decided that he will be calling the judge today, and explaining the situation (which violates the term of his suspended sentence) and asking the judge to issue a warrant and have him picked up from school. DH is afraid that if they come to the house to pick him up that he might hurt my Mom. I am not one to give up on kids, but I think we have come to the realization that we have not been able to help this child, and our continued efforts are only setting us up to have someone we love hurt again. Well, that's my story, and thank you for listening. It honestly felt better to get it out.

Dana

:grouphug: Dana. I'm soo sorry to hear your story. It must be so painful for your family. But it has come to a point where it doesn't sound like there's anything you can do and your mom has to be protected.

Kevin: Way to go on those XTs :thumbsup2

Krista: I've been watching American Idol too!!! I'm right there with ya'....CHRIS ROCKS! Also...I love Randle l...he was on my Fantasy Football team this year. Can't believe he's being traded :(. I also had Bettis :).

I'm still sick....hoping that tomorrow brings a new day of NO COUGHING! Ugh! My little one is also still sick....sooooo off to see the doctor again. I have a bad feeling that she has bronchitis too :(. We're a mess here and DH is on yet another business trip  ! He sure knows when to get out of dodge!

On the other hand my running/exercise addiction has found an outlet while I'm recuperating. I bought the newest Runners World magazine, ordered warm weather running clothes from T9 (BTW how great is that catalog?!) and I searched out running trails in Sedona. We're going to Arizona on vacation in a few weeks and I wanted to see where I could run, turns out there is a 4 mile trail/loop thru red-rock country right outside our B&B :teeth: . In Phoenix the resort we are staying at has a 5 mile running trail. Sounds like Arizona is VERY runner friendly! BTW...has anyone visited AZ? It's our first trip there and I'm really really excited!!!

Good morning everyone. :sunny:

I should have known this was coming as I felt feverish yesterday morning but blamed that on my boss' being sick and coming into work. But I had a bit of a flare up yesterday. By dinnertime EVERYTHING hurt, but especially my knees and hands. We had to go out food shopping and even to walk around the store hurt. This morning I woke up and pondered getting on the TM...But then I thought "What would make me feel better? Working out or going back to bed for an hour?" I opted for working out. Amazingly enough. And actually right now I feel better. I don't feel feverish anymore but my knees now feel just tired. So, maybe, flare-up over.

So I did my 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1% with 4 min @ 3% & 4 min @ 4. I'm really glad I did. BTW I also started doing some lunges. OK only ten but hey, baby steps, baby steps.

Thinking of Cam and Howard this morning and hoping all is well. :flower3:

I have a question for everyone who has recently or will soon do your first event....

Did you do the distance before the event?

I ask because there is no way I'm going to be standing at the starting line at the 07 Half and wondering if I can do 13.1 miles. I want to KNOW I can do it. I was thinking probably when I get back from my Sept vacation I would do the entire 13.1 miles just to be sure I could. Any thoughts on that? Or is just a no brainer and of course I should do the full distance before my event? :confused3

I'm five pages in today but had to respond to Keener taking away Europe.

WAY TO GO!!! BE THE MOM!! YOU ARE AWESOME AND A VERY STRONG WOMAN.

No - i don't have children, but I have in-laws that are out of control and don't pay attention to their 16yr old daughter. There are a lot of other issues mixed into it with them..... but she gets away with murder and they think just taking away the phone or not seeing her friends is punishment. It isn't - she laughs and then sneaks out.

I'm so proud of you for taking charge and being the mom! It took lots of strength and energy, but it is the right thing to do - she will pout and whine and be a brat! But it is the right thing!

Way to go for being a strong good mom!

ok - caught up.....

Dana - I'm so sorry to hear your story. I hope your son is OK and has worked everything out through counseling. That's probably the most difficult part of all of this - is balancing the need to not want to give up and the protection you have to provide for your family..... I'm sorry....

And for all you sick people - I swear by the flu shot... yes I know all the debates about immunizations - but that flu mist has been my best friend this year. I have never done it before and always got something every year - upper respiratory, broncitis, flu..... nothing this year! yes - I'm knocking on wood as I type!

last night was my first night without hubby doing the Zen Sleek (I got this instead of a Nano) thing and listening to Harry Potter books.... It was great - I got into such a zone and didn't notice how fast I was walking... I busted out 3.5 miles with a 17 mph pace!!! That's great for me.

everyone be good! love and Disney kisses....
Dawn

Dana -- :grouphug: I am so sorry your family is going through this. How generous of you and your DH and your mother for giving that boy an opportunity to turn his life around. I hope the day comes when he is a responsible adult and can appreciate all you tried to do for him. I am so sad for the trauma your DS has suffered (and your dog). How horrible. Please know you are doing the right thing, turning this boy over to a system that might be able to make an impression on him.

. . . .

Thank you so much, cingoutloud and everyone else who has been supportive. But I have to confess -- if Howard had not put his foot down on this, I think we would still not have cancelled and would have hoped she'd earn it back. He is much stronger than I am, but we always stand together, and I had to admit he is right. Now, I feel peaceful about it. I tell DD all the time that the biggest gift God ever gave me were her and DS12 and that with that gift came the responsibility of keeping them safe until they can take care of themselves. And that I am only accountable to God for the way I am raising her. Someday she will get it. I am actually so proud of her for the maturity with which she is handling this. The initial upset is over and we seem to have moved on. [I hope I am not delusional] I am just grateful she is still talking to us.

Mel -- congrats to DD!!!! :cheer2:

Judy -- glad your workout made you feel better! :goodvibes

Kim -- awesome pace!

Krista -- I have always wanted to try "sweatin to the oldies" -- so glad to hear it is fun and that you had a nice time strolling down memory lane during your workout! :teeth:

Kevin -- So jealous that you are heading somewhere warm where you can get in some training. Good for you, being that disciplined! Now, you just have to remember to pack your running gear (that is first on my packing list for my solo WDW trip in 2 weeks!)

AmyBeth -- sending :goodvibes and pixiedust: that you and your little one will feel better very soon.

Sunny -- thanks for the heads up on that software. I may be willing to give DD more freedom on the internet if I put that in place and more freedom with her car (when she finally gets it back) if I put one of those tracking devices on it. I still have to do some research on that. I am worried she may go out driving late at night and get lost or end up in a bad area and we wouldn't even know where she was.

Well, I didn't get to work out last night because of a meeting and tonight is the dinner I am hosting for my former partner, so I am going to have to self-motivate to get to the gym tomorrow night and do something that won't impact negatively on my ability to do the 5K Saturday.

KEVIN- WHEN ARE YOU COMING???? and where are you going in AR???? You may be near here!!!! Let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dana-- I am so sorry you are going through this. You have not given up on a child. You have given this child all that you can. This boy needs help beyond what you or your mother can give him. I hope your DH impresses on the judge just how serious this situation is. Hopefully they can put him in a facility for mental health care rather than jail. But either way, your family's safety is the top priority now. Sending :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: your way.

As for the pic of my legs-- don't hold your breath! My legs are tree trunks. But they would be tree trunks even without the mega leg presses. Its just my lot in life. My only hope is to lose about 30 more pounds if I want to have shapely legs... sigh.

Cam-- let me know what you find out about the car tracking device. DD will be getting her license next month and she has no sense of direction! That might be a good safety device.

Amy-- I'm sooooooo jealous. Sedona, AZ is where I really, really want to vacation. I haven't been able to sell the family on it. Probably because my plans are to hike and run the whole time! My parents were there last fall and said it is absolutely spectacular. Have a blast!

I might be going to Oklahoma next week. Anyone from OK?

Sunny - Where are you going in OK? I don't live that far from Tulsa. I would love to get together. I actually live in the far NW corner of AR, very close to both Missouri and Oklahoma. When are you going to be there. You know, Hogeye Marathon is next weekend. You can come run it w/ me if you are in the area. I'm going to take it really easy and slow!!!!

So.... I'm proud to report that i remaind upright during my workout today!! I rode my road bike for a hilly 20 miles. I have not been on the road bike since the century ride in September. I had a pretty tough time of it today b/c of the wind, but my speed was ok and most importantly, I DIDN'T CRASH!

Sunny: Apparently Sedona has an amazing new Half Marathon :thumbsup2 . If I remember correctly it was in February. A little too close to Disney maybe? But still something to consider :teeth: . I plan to take loads of photos and will of course share some with you guys here!

Cingoutloud: ITA with you about the flu shot. The years I get the shot I ALWAYS avoid bronchitis. Go figure. Last year...no shot....bronchitis and pneumonia. This year...no shot (my own stupidity b/c it was available) and guess what....BRONCHITIS. Ugh. I think your theory is correct...I've always suspected! My kids do get the shot and are usually very healthy. For some reason my little munchkin just can't shake this sinus thing she's got. Fortunately her lungs are clear :goodvibes . So another course of antibiotics and hopefully she'll be good as new!

Waaaahhhh :guilty: ....I want to go out and run. It's nice out today. So experts....how long do you think I should wait until I get back out there? I ran Sunday....kickboxing Monday....rested Tuesday/Wednesday. I plan to do yoga today and pilates on Saturday. When do you think I'll be able to run? I'm so impatient!

Cam: I love what you tell your kids about them being a gift from God and that you have to protect them  . I think I will borrow your words of wisdom.

Judy: Sure hope you aren't having a flare-up. Sounds like the exercise was a good choice. Take care of yourself!!! And sending LOADS of pixie dust! :grouphug:

Okay, I'm intrigued! There's a catalog I've never heard of? HTH did that happen? Spill the beans. Name? Website? HELP! Share nice, AmyBeth! ;)

By the way, here is the outfit I ordered (I ordered the skirt in black and the top in red, now I wish I'd gotten the shirt in black -- it might hide those bulges that make me look like I am wearing sausage casing):

Cam: :teeth: Love your outfit! I think it's going to be perfect! I am a fan of red anyway!!! As for my new favorite catalog...it's T9 or Title 9. Really great athletic wear for women! All kinds of cool running clothes!!

http://www.title9sports.com

Happy shopping...... ;)

I've never heard of that one either! Must check it out!

Cam-- the skirt is a great idea! I've been thinking of doing super light shorts over the sausage thing, but a skirt would be even better.

MelR-- I don't know if I'm going. I won't go if I have nothing to show. That would be bad, but it looks like that may be the case. That would be a hoot to just up and run Hogeye in Fatville :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I honestly don't think I could finish though. I'm amazed at how much endurance I've lost. I've also been on a couple of new meds and I think that may be effecting me. ggrrr.

Amy-- I never take the whole rest thing seriously. I also on rare occasion experience the odd sensation of not being able to get out of bed-- literally. I sometimes push to the point of total exhaustion but I've never suffered a real injury or had a lasting bad effect from it. I know that is not good advice, but its honest. If you feel up to a gentle run, then go for it. When you start doing major distance LRs you'll have to discipline yourself to take rest days more seriously. That's my 2cents anyway.

Back to not making my project work.....
