Wk of June 24--WISH Walking/Running Club

Thanks Krista. :goodvibes

I actually ran 5.25 miles last week (my actual longest run to date), but I ran 40, walked 1, then ran 20. That is probably when I hurt my foot! :rotfl2:

I think I do better mentally when I'm not watching my stopwatch waiting for the coveted 1 minute walk break. Sounds silly I know... :lmao:

I'll do the ice thing.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Yesterday I did my speedwork at the University of Rochester track over lunch. I did a mile warmup, and then alternated fast laps with recovery laps. I did the 440 laps for 2.5 miles, and overall my run was 4 miles. It was a tough run because it was getting hot, but I got it in and my shins felt OK.

Sunny- Just wanted to send a shout out to say I'm thinking of you. Hang in there.

Krista- Cedar Point sounds awesome. Wow, 17 coasters?!? It sounds like they built so many more since I used to go about 10 years ago. At that point the Magnum was the biggest coaster they had. Sounds like you guys have fun. Give my best to Steve.

Carrie- No worries about thinking things weren't OK here at home. I really appreciate your concern. No, the "family issues" I was talking about just meant getting back into the swing of the home routine after being away at Rio for a week. I really wanted to try to make up time and help out even more after being away.

Cam and Judy- Glad you guys had a great time at the concert and didn't get into too much trouble.

Karen- I hope your hip starts feeling better soon. Good job getting out there and still getting some steps in.

Stephanie- I'm right there with you on your training plan. I'm hoping to go sub-4 hours too, but I don't want to put too much strain on the family to do it. We'll see how the training goes.

Shan- Great job on your 5+ miler. WTG!!! Krista had good advice with the icing.

I went out for a short run last night and it felt good afterwards. No major pain in my calf this time.:yay: It felt a little tight but I think it is finally getting better. I did 3 miles with a 10:46 pace so the pace is getting back down as well.

The boys are doing well this summer and have more energy than Lynnda or I do. Timmy isn't satisfied with lounging now and want to sit up most of the time. He is getting better at doing it himself but it is funny to watch him try to get to that position.

I guess I can't complain about running on the TM anymore. Dean Karnazes, the ultramarathoner, ran 128.75 miles on one in 24 hours. :scared1: I guess I can handle 3-5 myself now. He did say he set a new PR from the run, this was the first time he lost all 10 toenails on one run.

Shan - Congrats on doing the 4 miles without stopping for walks. That is great. :thumbsup2 I'm glad your foot is getting better as well.

Karen - Glad you were able to get outside for your walk. Anything that beats the sweepers is great. Glad you hip is feeling better.

Cam - A 2:45 drive time. You should have just parked the car and had an impromptu LR session. ;) By the way, I don't think you can qualify for a slug just yet.

Carrie - Glad the nerve pain is going away. Congrats on doing the 7 miles on Saturday.

Krista - Glad you had a great time at Cedar Point. We will generally ride roller coasters but don't make it a point of looking for them so we probably won't be there for a while. Sorry to hear about your LR but at least you got through it.

Angie - I don't have any experience with the headaches. Actually if I have one before I start running, it usually clears up by the time I am done. I guess I may be backwards in that regards. Glad to hear that your blisters are feeling better.

Stephanie - Congrats on having the sub-9 feel easy now. That is a great accomplishment.

Meghan - Hope everyone is feeling better now. Congrats on getting your run in, that was a great time.

Judy - Hope things are calming down a little now. Glad you were able to get your run in. I think you also have a ways to go before you hit slug status as well.

Melissa - Glad you are having fun with the new job. How long before you design everyone the official WISH bike? ;)

Heather - Thanks for that site. It was more accurate than I thought it would be and a little scary looking at some of the times for the races.

Megan - Glad you are feeling better about running. It is always good to take a break every now and then just to feel refreshed.

WWDave - Hope your walk went nicely yesterday. I'm not too sure about that drink flavor though.

Kim - Sorry that you didn't get your walk in. Temps in the 30's, that would feel great right about now...although you probably are talking in Celsius and not Fahrenheit. ;)

Craig - Thanks for your insight about tempos. You need to offer an online course for all your running tips and knowledge.

Leana - Great job on getting your 9 miles in. Glad you like the Clif Blocks and that they worked for you. I can't stand chewing them on my runs so I opt for the Gu's instead.

Have a great day everyone.

Bill

Good morning team!!!!......2 more days of work till my super long weekend!!!!! Can't wait. I am sure I mentioned it a million times, Thursday is DS's high school graduation....I am so excited and proud of him...I can't wait to see him walk across the stage in his cap and gown:love:

Angie: Yaa no more blisters:woohoo: Congrats on our run, be proud of all you have accomplished.

WWDave Hope you enjoyed your walk yesterday

Megan Bull riding:scared1: Would love to see the photos

Mike Congrats on your fastest run ever. That is great. One thing I have learned from evryone here and what I have read is that do what works for you. Might take some trial and error but if it works for you then it is right.

Melissa 10 miles WTG on getting it done:thumbsup2

Judy Glad you enjoyed your weekend, I am sure all the dancing you did at the Kenny concert counts as XT

Meghan WTG on your LR:woohoo:

Stephanie Sub 9 miles.....wow you rock girl! That is awesome:cheer2:

Krista I love roller coasters, we keep saying we are going to go to Cedar Point we just have never fit it in. Will get there some day.

Carrie Glad to hear you are pain free and WTG on your LR

Cam Glad to hear you had a great time at your concert. I have a friend I met on a website we have been great friends for about 7 years we only can visit each other twice a year as her family lives about a 10 hour drive from us but funny where you meet people you just click with.

Howard Hope you enjoyed your birthday weekend.

Karen WTG on getting in your steps. Sorry to hear your hips started to bother you. Work has just been nuts, hardly any DIs time at work lately.

Shan Glad the foot it starting to get better

Bill Yup Celsuis, today it will be 40 with the humidex!!!!! I think I will be working out on the TM in the cool basement tonight...uuggghhh Timmy must be getting so big....they grow up so fast....

SOrry If I missed anyone, hope you all have a great day!!!!

Morning team. Can't decide what to do today--might be a rest day--or I might hit the gym tonight for some XT. We'll see. Yesterday was a good mail day for us--got our MNSSHP tickets and our ressies confirmation for January!:cool1:

Bill--can't believe that Timmy is sitting up already. They grow up so fast. Great for getting a pain free run!

Kim--Give my congrats to your DS! you must be such a proud momma!

DaveSW--great job on your speedwork!

WEll, time to feed the natives! Have a great Tuesday everyone!

ressies confirmation for January!:cool1:

Wow, I booked ages ago well seems like ages ago and haven't gotten any confirmation. Does anyone know if they released the January 08 rates yet?? Congrats to you.

Hey, I was just thinking how much we will all stand out in our WISH shirts during a night run Wahooo

Yikes...gotta get to work.

Kim

Kim--ours was a DVC ressie--so I don't know about the others:confused3

Kim the 2008 reservations and rates are available for the Swan and Dolphin now. Erica and I just reserved our room last week. We are staying there because it's about half the cost of the other Epcot area hotels. Since we are taking two Disney vacations a year now we have to trim the expense a bit.

Our other vactions are usually in the Cincinnati area for the Flying Pig Weekend and Gattlinburg Tenn, for the hills to train on and the fun of wondering this beautiful little town. They are very inexpensive compaired to the big D.

Anyway Good morning WISH Warriors.

The Pretty Princess has a headache so this might turn into a rest day, which is ok for taper week. We had a nice 6 mile walk yesterday.

http://www.oddjokes.com/images/Truthful Scale.jpg

Here is your "YARC" message for the day.

I work in a mall and a lot of times when no one is in the store I'll watch the people go by. One of the things I have noticed is that a lot of parents give their toddlers a big order of french fries to carry and munch on while in their strollers. A 2 or 3 year old with a biggy size order of fries is just not right. I never see a kid with a carrot or a celery stick to munch on.

Everyone with aches and pains "GET BETTER".

Erica my medical expert, was reading about the problems with orthotics and wanted everyone who wears them to know that if you wear orthotics and get motion control or stability shoes it throws the off the good the orthotic can do. The orthotic does much better in a netural cushion shoe.

Have a geat day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning everyone!!! Can you believe it's almost July?? Where has the time gone? Last night I xt at the gym, I did the bike on the random hill program, ended up doing 11.37 miles and then I lifted--leg press 3 sets of 10 @ 80lb, leg extension 3 sets 10 @ 30 lbs, leg curl 3 sets of 10 @ 40 lbs, and row machine 5 sets of 10 @ 30 lbs. I was going to do the arm curl and arm extension, but people were on them and I didn't feel like waiting around. Tonight I have 3 miles, most likely on the TM at the gym, I need to meet Stephen around 6:30 so we can have some papers notarized. I figure if I have to wait around for an hour, I might as well get my run in!

Shan--How's your foot? Feeling any better?

WW Dave--I so agree with you, I can't believe the things kids are eating now days. I know I'm not a parent, so maybe I don't get a voice in the matter, but I know my parents didn't let us eat like that. And we didn't sit inside and play video games all the time either, if the sun was up we were outside playing. I worry about that generation and what will happen as they get older and health problems begin to develop. Sort of OT, but have you ever seen Super Size Me? I couldn't believe what happened to Morgan Spurlock's body after a month of eating Mc Donald's. Okay, off my soap box now. :) I hope Erica is feeling better!

Kim--Have fun at your son's graduation! You must be so proud!

Karen--Excellent job getting your 7 miles in even though you were in pain. I can tell you from experience, it's good practice to get some runs in where you are in pain, in case you are faced with that on marathon day. ;)

SW Dave--Nice speed work! I'm glad things are going better with your family. Has DW said anymore about marathon weekend?

Have a great day everyone! Happy training!!

Hi everyone! Long-time no speak. Well, 5 days is too long to be away from the boards without an excuse like vacation. LTO is all I can say.

DH, Calcio, leaves tomorrow to spend the rest of the summer in CO. As you know he is teaching an MBA course at CU starting next Monday. I'm getting a rather perverse pleasure in telling people we are separating for the summer! I watch their faces before I crack a smile. Just my sense of humor. He will be missed although I will be out there next week. He is picking me up on July 4th, taking me to lunch then back to his apartment. I feel like we are dating again! Hee, hee. Seriously, I'm totally jealous of him and hope it is everything he wants it to be.

And things are looking up for DD. She is going to work at JP Morgan on a contract basis but also has a couple leads on permanent job positions. Things weren't looking too good last week for her but she caught a break yesterday. The world was looking a little brighter yesterday.

Sunny: my heart goes out to you! I am so sorry to hear of all the bad things going on in your life right now. Please know we care very much about you and are sending you thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted. :grouphug:

Howard: hope your birthday weekend was everything you wanted and then some!

Dave: thanks for the tip on the orthodics.

Krista: DH LOVES roller coasters but gets seasick in a bath tub! Go figure. Sorry to hear the run was bad. But think of all the walking and outdoor time you got at Cedar Point. You should have had great cardio workouts each time you were on a roller coaster. You know, heart pounding, breathless, screaming. Oh wait--that's what happens to ME on one of those things. Hence I do NOT ride them.

Cam: knowing what you do all during the week between all the volunteer work, regular work, workouts, carpooling, etc., the LAST thing I'd call you is a slug! Very happy to hear the weekend was awesome. Loved the picture!

kareneast: can you tell me more about the OTC orthotics for regular shoes? I have orthotics custom made but they are for my running shoes and I think I'd like to try some OTC for regular shoes. Any info would be helpful.

Shan: sorry to hear about the foot issues and I hope your 10K distance goes well!

Bill: it always seems like kids have much more energy than adults. I do hope they are both happy and healthy. Think of the workout you are getting just chasing them around the house!!

Kim: congrats on DS graduation and have a great time! I hope the weather is good and everything works out well for it!

Stephanie: glad to hear your tickets and ressies came through!

July 7 is the Leadville Heavy Half Marathon. I hope I can do this. I'm just walking as I've said so I should be OK. But it's at altitude which will be a factor. Everyone have a great day no matter what you do!!!

Bill – I am so glad your calf is getting better. I cannot believe Timmy is already wanting to sit up. The time I spent with him in my arms at the Minnie weekend WISH meet was pure bliss. What darling boys you have! Then again, with you and Lynnda as parents, how could they be anything else? Please tell Lynnda we miss her around here.

Shan – I have heard that headaches during a run can be a sign of dehydration but I have also read of athletes passing out after developing a dehydration headache, so please tell DH to be very careful.

Kim – congrats to DS and to his proud Mom! Hard to believe it has been more than a year since my DD graduated. This next year will bring so many changes to your family and your relationship – it is so wonderful watching our kids grow independent and more adult. :goodvibes

Dave – Sending Erica pixiedust: to feel better today.

Martha and Craig – I know the time away from each other will be tough, but enjoy the reunions! And congratulations to Lesley for finding a position. I am sure the perfect permanent job will come along for that terrific young woman at the right time. :thumbsup2

I have to tell you guys something and sometime later this week I will post a picture of me and Judy at the concert, but you have to hear this. Now, some of you have met Judy’s DH, Charlie – he was the guy hovering over her after the half and positively glowing with pride for their awesome finish on the half together. Well, I always thought he was just the nicest guy, right up there with all the WISH team awesome men, but then he goes and does something way over the top! The darling man brought me a present this weekend in honor of the Kenny Chesney concert – a cowboy hat! It is awesome!!! The sides are rolled up and there is a really pretty brick red leather cord at the base of the crown that ties in the back. OMG! It is, as he and Judy said, “feminine with attitude” I was so psyched! I told him that no one who knows me on an everyday basis would have thought to buy it for me, but it is the most fun and delightful gift I could imagine! Now I need to find that broncin’ bull Megan was riding! :lmao:

Okay, just to avoid prolonged slug status, I went to the gym last night for an hour on the treadmill. Our gym is about to undergo a huge renovation and I am very concerned about the reduced number of treadmills available as well as how hot and close and congested it is going to be for the next 4-5 months. UGH.
Anyway – 60 minutes TM including 5 minutes warm-up – 4.31 miles (445 calories). At home I did my 100 crunches and 100 pushups (50 days in a row, totals 5025C, 5000PU) and another 10 minutes of other balance ball exercises.
I also started back to the basics on Weight Watchers yesterday in the hopes of getting these last 30 pounds off. I can’t believe I’ve kept off 75 even with all the “carb loading” I do :rotfl: but I really now believe the muscle we build helps our bodies to maintain in a weight range.

Okay, back to work for me. Just sitting here thinking of my awesome teammates does keep me smiling, though! :grouphug:

Well, I did not do anything last night. I guess I just opted to take it as a rest day. Tonight is a 5 mi run, and I may try and get some upper body weights in as well.

I'm volunteering at our 10K Canada Day run here in town on Sunday. As much as I'd love to run it, I have a 10 miler to do, and I don't want to tire myself out as I'm sure I'd really push those 6.2 miles in the race. (Especially considering the weekend after if my very first half....) Instead I'll run my 10 miler on Saturday, then help out at the water stop at the race on Sunday. Check out the shirts the volunteers are supposed to get:

https://secure.hbcrunforcanada.ca/docs/HbcRFC_VolunteerShirts.pdf

A tech shirt for volunteering? Not too bad eh? Kim, if you and your hubby aren't doing anything on Sunday I'm sure you could still volunteer at the Toronto HBC run if you guys are interested. BTW, congrats on you DS's graduation!!

Martha - Have a great time in CO, and that is great news about DD. What is the altitude for your half?

Bill - Glad to hear the calf is feeling better.

MSDave - Good job on the speedwork!

Shan - Hope that foot is doing OK! Vegas mid July....oh, I want to go visit Vegas again!

Karen - Girl, you are the marathon of posters! I'm so impressed! Congrats on getting your 5 mile is. Hope that hip is feeling OK, and good luck working the pace up.

Cam - It sounds like you guys had a great weekend! Way to go on your crunch and push up challenge!!!

Krista - Wow, awesome workout! It sounds like you are making good use of your Gold's membership.

WWDave - You are right - french fries aren't the sort of snack you should be giving to your kids. Sad to see...

Carrie - I'm so glad to hear that your nerve pain has improved.

Oh, and on a final note....I get itchy feet to travel all the time (apparently Disney in May, San Fran in October, back to Disney in October and January isn't enough for me...). I decided to jet off to Seattle for a weekend in September and I'm going to run the Ryka Iron Girl 10K. Looking forward to it!

Hi everyone! Thank you for the nice notes, birthday wishes and congrats.

Karen ~ As usual, Atlantic City kept most of what I took down with me. :headache:

I had a great "Birthday" weekend and enjoyed Judy and Charlie's visit. On Saturday when Judy and Cam were drooling at the Kenny Chesney concert, Charlie and I went to the shore to casino hop. We visited Tropicana, Caesars, Wild Wild West, and the Trump Taj Mahal. It was tough but we resisted the almost constant calls from the massage parlor workers along the boardwalk. Obviously our scuplted bodies and muscles called to them. :rotfl2: :scared:

We went to brunch on Sunday on the Moshulu (a beautiful tall ship) in Philadelphia at Penn's Landing. Charlie, my DS - Andrew, and I then toured the submarine "Bacuna" and the U.S.S. Olympia (instrumental in the battle of Manila in the Spanish American War) which are permanently docked next to the Moshulu and open for self-guided tours. It was a great day.

Here is an update on my training...

Yesterday after work: 5.32 Miles
This morning: 3 Miles

Still experiencing problems with shin splints. Times are suckie but I am working on that. :rolleyes1

Happy Training!

:grouphug:

Howard

Morning all! SOunds like everyone is moving right along!

Cam - I love that hat! What a sweet thing to do! Does that mean Scott is out of first place as WISH dh? ;) ;)

Krista - WTG! Random hills? Yikes!

SWDave - You know me, I'm a worrier. ;) Glad things are going so well!

Bill - I cannot believe Timmy is starting to sit up!! No way possible could that little noodle be big enough already! :scared1:

Howard - :wizard: for the shins!! Are we icing?

Calcia - Have agreat trip!

Martha - Try not to miss Craig too much!

Leana - Good for you f rvolunterrign instead of running. That sounds great and you know the runners aprpeciate thee volunteers. I need to stop racing and do that sometime myself.

Kim - COngratulations!!!

WWDave - DOn't worry. The aprents will sue the restaurant when teh kids ebcome obese. Soon, there won't be french fries around because some people just can't practice moderation. (Not that I should talk with my weight gain since January, but there's a dififference is a couple too many splurges adn gorging on grease daily.)

OK, it was over my 80 degree threshold last night, so I did a pool rung. Felt guilty, as the humidity was pretty low. I knew it was going to be worse today, though, so in teh pool I went. Poor dh ran. He's got cajun blood in him and he looked awful wehenhe got back. SO glad I wimped out! ;) My legs are pretty tired today, though, so I must have pushed hard enough.

Something to ponder: My pool was 86 degrees and that was just fine for my workout. 86 degree water in full contact with my body fo 3.5 to 4 feet. WHy can I not handle 80 degree air. Dh has some theories, but it still boggles my mind.:confused3

HEY!!!!! What about Stephen??? ;) :)

Notice I said WISHer dh. Stephen, or any others of our wonderful WISHers that post here, were not taken into consideration. They are consider the cream of teh crop! Besides, if I tell Scott hat he's been replaced in Cam's heart, she might benefit from his competitive spirit. :rotfl:

Greetings all -

I have no training to report. This may - despite what Bill so kindly said - quality me for Slug Status. I have no excuse except that we stayed up very late last night - now, don't be jealous - doing housework. I know, I know, you all are so envious. But it was time to flip the mattresses, vacuum under the bed, the whole nine yards. Yeah, I know, you WISH you had evenings like me.

Bill - That Dean is one crazy dude. Thanks for the vote of confidence about not being a slug, yet. But, well, ummm, I didn't train today either. Grrrrr.

Cam - Oh Cam! That was so sweet of you to say! When I tell you it took him forever to pick that hat out, I wasn't kidding. I was looking for a place in the store to sit down, he was taking so long. He is a doll, isn't he? I don't know how I got so lucky. :cloud9:

Leana - Wow, that's a pretty nice shirt! :thumbsup2 Best of luck on the Iron Girl. You go, travel, enjoy it! I should have done more of that when I was younger.... :rolleyes1

Howard - OMG! :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl: But I do agree, I'm sure you two stud muffins strolling the boardwalk just put them over the edge.

The closer my foot surgery gets the more I think I really don't want to do this. I'm so afraid I'm going to lose the little bit of fitness I have gotten over the last 18 months. :scared: Please somebody remind me that I will come out of this stronger and able to train with more intensity! I really really really really don't want to do this. :guilty: I think I'm going to take all my running shoes and put them on the floor around the reclining chair and hang my WISH shirts in the windows and have my pile of John Bingham books right by me. :sad2:

Notice I said WISHer dh. Stephen, or any others of our wonderful WISHers that post here, were not taken into consideration. They are consider the cream of teh crop! Besides, if I tell Scott hat he's been replaced in Cam's heart, she might benefit from his competitive spirit. :rotfl:

Ohhh, I see!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I'm glad your water run (wun??? :confused3 or maybe pool running is punning?? :confused3 ) went well yesterday. I don't handle running in the heat very well at all either.

Bill - Seriously... he lost all 10 in one run?! And to think I am terrified of losing one in my months of training.

Kim - I bet you are so excited. I can't imagine... my oldest is only 6 now!! I will be a wreck, of happiness of course, but a wreck none the less.

Krista - You are just kicking butt at the gym, aren't you!!

Martha - Best of luck for Leadville.

Howard - Make sure to ice your shins down at least 3 times a day, and especially ASAP after a run. It has always worked wonders for me.

Well.... this mornings run was 4 miles in 34:01 (8:30 mpm). Not exactly a PR or anything, but in my defense I was pushing the double stroller with both boys in it. Between the kids and the stroller itself it has to weigh at least 100 lbs?! After my 4 miles Michael got out and ran his r4/w1 for 25 minutes. He did great!! Ran 1.79 miles, 13:58 mpm! In a few weeks he'll be running three miles like it's nothing!! I figure each week will just add one more run. Last week it was 4. which totalled 20 minutes. This week it is 5 which total 25 minutes, and we'll just keep adding one more run each week until he gets there. I am so proud of him. One of the bicyclists on the trail this morning tried to give Michael a high five as he passed, but Michael got confused and didn't know what he wanted. It really surprises him that so many people are proud of him for getting out there and excersizing like he does. "O" well... I better stop rambling and go mow my yard. Is it Tuesday again already?!

Dana

I haven't been offically added to the team. Can someone please add me? My real name is Tricia. I am planning on doing the TOT 13K but may have to settle for the 6K instead - I still have hope for the longer distance.

My LR to my sisters house on Saturday worked out - its 3.5 miles from my house and I sprinted the distance down her street so by time I got there I was about dead. Thankfully she has a pool so I was able to cool down!! I am somewhat following the Jeff Gallaway method of run/walk so that is what I did. It took me approx. 46 mins to do the 3.5 miles so I don't think its too bad - still longer than my time last year but then again I burnt out last year and quit training so I am trying to not push myself this time. Then after that I helped her paint the inside of her house (they just bought it and doing remodeling before moving in) So that was good upper body workout.

Sunday and Monday I didn't do anything but stretching (not as much as I need to but it was something) Still getting the tightness in the calves and numbness in the feet but its not as bad as it was before with my old shoes. This morning I was able to get out and do a little less than 2 miles. Plan on doing some stregthening and stretching tonight and 2.5 miles tomorrow and Thursday since I have a 5k on Saturday and I don't want to push myself too much before that.

Dave & Erica - cute kitties - love the names - sounds like they found the right family!! I love my shelter cat - every time I hear a story about someone getting their pet at a shelter I want to hug my shelter cat and wish I could adopt them all!!

Cam & Judy - Glad to hear the concert was good - how lucky you got to see Brooks & Dunn as well - Pat Green was with him when he was down here - and of course we ended up missing him. But I love Sugarland and that was the 2nd time we saw them (or has it been 3 times now they have been with him - can't remember!!) Glad to hear you guys didn't need bail money!! LOL Sorry to hear about the trip home though - I can't stand the after concert traffic!!
