Wk of Jun 11--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Dave - It's a no brainer! You are not a fraud if you are slower than others, you are still a participating athlete! I have to remind myself of this all of the time. You should enter! It sounds like a ton of fun.

So speaking of being slow and still being an athlete, here is my race report.

I just finished my first xterra race. It is basically an off road tri w/ swim/mt. bike and trail run. The mountian biking is all single track as is the trail run. The ride (one that i had the fortune to practice a few times) is NOT entry level mt. biking at all. It is very technical w/ lots of huge climbs and tons of rocks, roots and drops. At one point in the bike course, there was a mandatory dismount b/c they were concerned that that part of the course was too far away from medical help!

During the prerace meeting, the race director told us of the course hazards and what to expect during the swim. Basically, he said the lake was spring fed, so very clean and clear but that it had lots of vegitation! He was not kidding! The race started w/ a mass start (87 participants). We ran into the water. I think i was the last person into the water as i did not want to be beaten in the head and bod by all other swimmers, so i literally waited until everyone was swimming, and then i started (can we as non-aggressive!) The vegitation along the bottom of the lake was visable through the entire swim. I often had a piece on my face arm or shoulder. It was kindof' surreal! I hate being lonely during a race, so i found a swim buddy! There was a guy that was side stroking about the same speed as my freestyle, so I talked to him in the water (that really made me happy) It was also nice having him b/c I did not have to look up to keep my direction as much. I knew he could see, so I just kept him in my sight!

After coming out of the water i slow jogged to the t/a which was really far away. During the t/a i ate a gel and put on my socks and bike shoes. Phil was leaving out of ta and EC was just getting there. I took out on the bike for the huge long ride (13 miles which does not sound like a lot until you see these trails. They are not normal!) I passed a bunch of people on the 1st lap (5 miles). I planned to climb the next big hill and then eat another gel. Guess what I forgot to load!!!!! the gels! I had to ride to the next aid station. by then I got really low. I did gain on couple of people, but never passed too many more. I made a really big mistake forgetting my gels! Anyway, I caught up to a girl in my age gp (she ended up coming in 3rd overall) I was riding better than her and faster, until.... I crashed BIG! I ripped my shorts, bent my derailler hanger (which messed up my easy climbing gears) and my handle bars were crooked (the stem was moved) I caught up to the girl again and then lost her again at the aid station where i stopped to get food. Then I was feeling pretty low on food and spirits. I was bleeding, ripped and my bike was jacked up. i also lost my bike computer on the fall. Anyway, I started thinking aobut you guys and my feather (which i brought, but forgot to put on my bike.) I was literally smiling and thinking (in a very girly way) "my feather" when all of the sudden i was flying over my handle bars and onto the ground! I hit a mud slick and think i was riding w/ my handle bars straight in my hands, which means i hit the mud w/ a sideways front wheel! I got back on, passed that girl on the next climb and then basically tanked! I thought aobut quitting when i got back to the ta. I rode the whole deal faster than i had in training. I decided to go back out for the run. I remembered my food and h2o. Basically at that point I had NOTHING! I was so imbalanced electrolyte wise that i could only walk! I walked (slowly) most of the 5 mile run (in my defense, it took EC a really long time by her standards) I used Christa's prayer technique (although part of the time it was not too altrustic, as i was praying for myself  ) On the run, i was thinking about judy's healthy cat and about telling you guys about my feather crash! I was able to sprint out the finish. there weren't very many women there and until the very end of the bike, i think i was somewhere around 2-4th overall. by the end of the run, i'm pretty sure i finished last in my age gp. #3 in my age gp passed me about 1/2 way through the run. #4 passed me while i was sitting at an aid station trying to catch up by drinking gatoraid. I did some things really wrong like forgetting my gels (huge mistake) and not even thinking of taking elecrrolyte tabs for a hot summer race. I did one thing right in that i recognized what was happening on the run and I slowed my body down to prevent additional sweating and I drank only gatoraid. Mostly I kept going! I'd have liked to have done better on the finish, but I suppose I'm just happy to have finished it! I have major bruises from the 1st crash and I'm going to have to take my bike in today b/4 i can ride again. Someone found my bike computer and i ended up getting it back! Phil did great but his time was not excellent as he and 3 flats and only one tube and enough air for 1 and 1/2 inflations. I actually almost caught up to him b/c he had to walk. He was walking in to quit as he couldn't finish on a flat and friends saw him and gave him additional tubes and air.

Thanks for riding and running w/ me again wish team!!!! Next time, i'd like to not take a dive right at the moment that i'm thinking affectionaly of you guys :teeth:

Sunny - how are you today? any better?

Hi Everyone!!

I've been MIA for quite a while because work's been crazy, but I wanted to stop by and say Hi, and see how everyone's training has been going! I ran a the Minnie, and a 1/2 since the Minnie, and then promptly sprained the muscle in the instep of my foot (I think that's what it is, at least :-)). Everytime I thought it was better and tried to run, I hurt it again!! But, I think it is finally better-- I've had a couple runs last week, and things are looking better! (especially since I was at DisneyWorld last week-- I think it was Disney that healed it-- it was just too great to be able to run around Seven Seas Lagoon to have an injured foot!!!!)

I just started my training for the Disneyland 1/2, and I'm on about week 4 (I missed the first couple weeks, but could fortunately jump right in where I should be...)

I hope everyone is doing great, and I amd going to go back in the thread and read the whole thing (hopefully by the end of the day!)

Dave-- your post was the only one I read (since it was right above mine :-)), and I think you should enter the 10K, and I DON'T think you would be a phony!!!

Hi WISH Team!

:grouphug: pixiedust: To EVERYONE! Iknow we are all in need in some way.
Ouch for all the injuries. Take it easy everyone! You can do this, but not if you push yourself beyond reason. (Craig, stick with me...I'll keep you slowed down, and anyone else who needs.) Did you know that there is fun at the back of the pack too? Nothing wrong with being there in imho! Which leads me to

Dave, go for it! What a great example you will set for your girls who will see you doing something as this. You will teach them it is ok to go for it; you don't have to be an elite athlete to participate; and that it is Fun! Enjoy it. Share your event with us.

Mel, Wow! I am glad you finished. I would be broke.

I am further behind at this time than last year. I am hoping that it will not take me out completely.

Keep on keepin' on everyone.

Thunder, thunder, thunderation!
We're the WISH Team delegation.
When we move with determination,
We create a GREAT! sensation.

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Dave -- I say go for it!
MelR-- I am so proud of you, sweetie! You could easily have quit and you didn't. I hope you carry that with you forever. You have to be so proud of yourself. :grouphug:

Hi, everyone! Not even sure right now when I last posted since I keep getting the dratted "server busy" message and it seems to lose whatever post I thought was posting when it went to that. YUCK and UGH!!!!

Just wanted to report that I did 50 measly minutes on the bike last night. It was an excuse to read a book and listen to music without having to do too much planning. Unfortunately, I definitely should have done some stretching and anti-inflammatories. Hip and hamstring are twinging today. Hoping to TM tonight after an appointment, so I will be sure to stretch beforehand and NOT re-injure right when I am trying to get into the training plan for Disneyland.

Hugs and pixiedust: everyone. Be well!

Thanks for the support everyone! Here's my BIL's opinion on the subject. It was an interesting perspective that gave me some pause.

"I did some research. It seems like there's a deliberate attempt, if you will, to attract phoneys! Now that they got rid of the qualifying standards.

It would cost you $65 to enter, plus another $20 or so in tickets for DW and the kids. So the Empire games would be up $85 for your moment of glory. Maybe that's their intent?

Did you look at last year's records? In your age group, 50 minutes took home the silver. So 65 minutes for the 10K wouldn't be embarrassing. And I'm sure you could get down to 62 minutes or so by then.

So I wouldn't worry about it on that end. Do you think they'd be able to spot you in the ceremonies from the stands?"

If you have not gotten a confirmation back from me on a shirt order, please let me know.

We just hit the 100 mark, which gives us the best price on printing!!! Woo hoo!

Thansk for teh thank you's everyone. It's really not that big of a deal. Then again, with over 100 shirts, can I count tonights e-mails as cross-training? ;)

Speaking of traning, dh and I were total slackers last week. Just ran out of steam. I hope to get to Curves tonight and we plan to run Tue and thur. Here's to hoping our motivation comes back!

Greetings TEAM:

I wanted to ask you all for some advice. I'm considering entering an event, but am worried about being a real phoney. Here in New York they have the Empire State Games, a yearly multi-sport event for amateur athletes, patterned after the Olympic program. Athletes must be residents of the State of New York. Following competition (Regional Trials) in each of six regions of New York State, winners numbering some 6,000 will participate in finals competition. I just found out this weekend that the finals are here in Rochester this year at the end of July.

They have a master's division with a 10K road race. There is no qualifying standard for the 10K race, but many sports do have qualifying standards. I could enter the 10K race, I'd get a team sweatsuit for my region of western NY, and I could even march in the opening ceremonies. This is where I would feel like a fraud. It is very possible and likely that I would be among the last place finishers of the 10K, and with my shins, I'm not even running right now. However, I always thought it would be so cool to be in an "Olympic" like event. I love the idea of the family watching me in the opening ceremonies. And it's right here in my home town.

What do you all think? Should I enter?
Dave - JUST DO IT! You are totaly a runner and it will be a blast...who knows, you may even place....I bet you won't be last! :cheer2: That is too cool of an event to pass up!

Dave - You should definitely go for it. It will be so cool. I love the Olympic style events.

Mel - Congrats on finishing your race. Hope the bumps and bruises (yours and your bike's) turn out ok.

Well, I made my room ressies for the 2007 Goofy. Booked OKW 2 BR. Stayed at SSR in Jan. and will try BWV in Oct. So I'm making my way through the DVC resorts. I wanted to stay BWV or BCV so it would be easier for my friends to see me on the course. But BWV wasn't available and some of the recent BCV posts have scared me off (it will be my firends' first time staying DVC). Plus the OKW points were lower! :teeth:

I was looking at the MfM training plan (as well as a few others). How come so many of these plans have Sunday as an "off" day? I know for me, Sat. & Sun. are the best days to get in a long run/wog. Just curious.

Good morning all!!

Pat-- I know this is from last week's thread, but I think you can be just fine for the full provided you put the time in to training. For me personally, I like the idea of including jogging segments in with your walking from time to time to keep ahead of the sweepers, but that's just me. If you can walk a consistant 14 minute mile, you should be fine. You can definately do this!! :teeth:

Now, about those bathrooms.... :teeth: During the full, you will find "real" bathrooms in Epcot-- depending on your course, it could be in Future World or World Showcase (roughly miles 2-4); the Magic Kingdom-- Fantasyland and Fronterland for sure (miles 10-11); Animal Kingdom-- DinoRama section (mile 17??); the MGM Studios-- not sure exactly where, but there has to be one somewhere (mile 22-23) and Epcot again (miles 25 and 26). There's obviously not much outside of the parks. If you are worried about getting swept, use a portable before the start and hold it until at least the MK. During the full, there was a line at the Morocco women's room when I ran by prior to mile 3. Hope that helps!

Happy training!!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Thanks Kevin, the bathroom info does help. I am just really, really fond of flushing toilets. Glad to know that I will find some along the way. I can only dream of a 14 min pace, I will be happy with a 15:30!!

I just got an email that said more spots were open for the Disneyland half. There is a new thread with a link to sign up if you still want to.

I am desperately trying to find a link.

But one summer in the Olympics--with world elite athletes..one country sent a representative for the sport of swimming. This man learned how to swim just for the Olympics.

Now to say he came in last was an understatement. It took him a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY long time.

Why is this important? B/c it is such a memorable Olympic moment watching on television (not sure if it was live--may have been Sydney, but don't recall and google ain't helping much). The crowd was cheering this man. Ordinarily--the non-elite don't get much attention. This man had everyone's attention.

If he could confidently enter an Olympic event and represent his country proudly and not for one moment considered to be a fraud...you go and enter your event and participate proudly!

Well I'm back from our mini vacation and my step daughter's wedding. Boy do I feel fat! The entire week all we did was visit family, eat, set up for the wedding and eat some more.... :guilty: I left my diet when I left the state of Colorado. lol. Tomorrow I'm going to try to walk 6 miles, :thumbsup2 if my big spare tire can fit through the door. ha.ha.

Hi there, well I guess I'm back - not just posting (although I'll try and keep that up a bit more regularly now too) but as a runner. I started training for DL last week, managed all my runs including an hour on Saturday - but it was only 40 minutes into that one, when I did my first 'farmer's blow' when I felt like a runner again. And then last night when I was running uphill in a gale force headwind with branches flying all around me from the trees I decided I was 100% back in training, all I need to do now is lose a toenail.

So, I haven't read anyones posts for weeks as I've been so busy at work. I hope everyone is okay, nice to see Craig back. I am currently a World Cup Widow, the games are on at 1am, 4am and 7am here so Tim keeps disappearing to watch them - mind you, at least we have satellite TV in the house, my friends husband wandered off down the road at 12.50pm the other night to watch the England game at his friends house she was most confused when she woke up. We've also got our little England flag on the car (which gets some seriously wierd stares as I'm not sure most kiwis have registered it's on!). That's my lot today, just a quickie post. Helen

Morning Everyone,

Wow - a full three pages already. I haven't read any posts yet but I wanted to check in with all of you.

Last night I went to the fitness center and did 3 miles on the threadmill :thumbsup2 . I was exhausted but I went anyway :) work doesn't seem to be slowing down at all, if anything I am gettting more and more work - which is fine, the day goes by fast but it is part of the reason that I don't get to post as much :guilty: .

So has anyone been checking into flights for January, I was watching the prices for a little bit and they were going down for awhile there, then shortly before Memorial day they went the highest that I've seen. I would like to buy them soon --- so that I could give DH a full package when I give him the big surprise. Hehe, only 4 more months......now, it's getting harder to keep the secret but well worth it!

Okay, time to try and catch up with posts......Have a great day everyone!

GOOD MORNING ALL! I hope everyone is doing well!

Melissa - All I can say is DUDE! You are "Da WOMAN!" You did so wonderful at your event.......Bleeding and finishing...WOW! :thumbsup2

Well I did nothing yesterday and I am trying to figure out when I can do something today. I need to swim, but don't know if that will happen. I may just run and few miles on the DREADMIL!
I got on the scales this morning and was please to find I have met my goal weight for going to HH (We are going next week and I wanted to get down to this weight).
Judy, you will :rotfl2: at this.....My MIL told me last year at HH that with all the running I do, you would think I would be thin. :furious: So what is she trying to say???? Well she let me know real quick that my SIL (the evil one who causes all the probs in the fam...but MIL LOVES her) was so much thinner than me and she has had 3 children (and I only have 2). Any who....My SIL was not then and is not now thinner than me...but I still choose to be mad! :furious:

Morning all!!!

Dave-- So long as you will be healed and well enough to train for it-- I say go for it. Not to be Debbie Downer or anything, but I would hate to see you get more hurt than you already are and not be able to train properly for Disney. But if you can do it.... Do it!! :thumbsup2

Mel-- Wow, WTG on the race!! :thumbsup2 You are made of far tougher stuff than I.

Jodi-- I'm actually booked for airfare already. I found a price I was willing to pay for (at the time) non-stop flights from my home airport, so I bit the bullet.

Yesterday I had a fairly good gym workout with weights and cardio. This morning I really suprised myself with my run-- I did my scheduled 2 miles in 17:47, or 8:54/mile pace! :woohoo: I split the first mile at 9:07 and then did the second in 8:40. I guess the rest day worked! I'm scheduled for another 5K training run tomorrow morning, so we'll see how that goes. I feel like I am finally back in the groove again.

Have a great day all!

:rotfl: Glad to hear that I am not the only one who has a SIL from hell!

Have a great time at HH, Christa. :sunny:

Terri, congrats on booking your room for the marathon. It is a good feeling to get those things in place.

Kevin, great splits. Way to go getting back into the groove.

Lisa, :wave2: good to see you around again. We missed you!

MelR, great job on your race! :cheer2: I had to doubts you could do it. Congrats to EC too!

Mel, hope your visit with the podiatrist is productive. Congrats on the new shoes. :thumbsup2 Did you say you were trying a new training plan? Which one, I am in search of a new one too. I am in limbo now waiting for my orthotics, but once I get them I need to start my plan for Chicago.

I had to do my run on the treadmill last night after dinner now that the kids are home for summer vacation. It was alright, because I could people watch the evening people at the gym. Interesting group! My 3 miles flew by.

Colleen

Good Morning,

Thanks all for the contnued encouragement. I wouldn't still be here if it wasn't for the TEAM!

Dave - Thanks for the kind words, I really needed to read those. Go for it and sign up for the event. You belong there!

Maggie - Oh you poor thing! I hope this gets resolved. I feel badly for you. You guys in your 30's are killing me! Just you wait until you hit 45! Trust me!

Judy - What I meant to say was I am ONLY 33. I realize I am very young still, although dealing with dd15 I sometimes feel as if I am aging much faster! :rotfl2:

We just hit the 100 mark, which gives us the best price on printing!!! Woo hoo

Wow! There are alot of us!

Maggie - I battled this problem last year and it is still on going. I had been first diagnosed with a sacrum issue but after xrays and finally a specialist that did an MRI they found that I have a bulging disk in my lower back which causes the back/hip/sciatic pain. I sure hope they find a solution for you soon!!!!

They are now telling me it is a sacrum, mixed in with thoracic back issue. Pain down my leg and in my gluteal is radiating pain. I hope they are right. with strenghthening exercises, PT and MD are telling me it will be 6-8 weeks of therapy/recovery to feel a difference.

Minnie and others still battling ailments -- I admire you even more for still fighting through and being here. How many people would use the aches and pains as justification to cop out. Instead, you all look at it as something to work through. It makes us stronger, doesn't it? You aren't just people trying to do athletic stuff. Instead you are athletes who are dealing with health issues to get back to training. Kudos, guys!

Cam, comment like this is what keeps me here and in the game! Thanks.

Time to go see if I can get my kids to clean up their legos - wish me luck! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Maggie :surfweb:

That is the BEST. Before the boy was born, phil and i were members of the municipal gym in little rock, ar. it was so interesting and entertaining! People would do the funniest things. I considered it what i believe seinfeld would term a "target rich environment!" My favorite was the guy who would wear a button up oxford shirt, scarf and some kind of orb. He would come to the weight room w/ his get up to do some weird stretches and then he would leave!!!!????

Christa - :o I say we put your MIL and my MIL in a troom and just let them kill each other, ;)

OK, I took a step to gettign on track last night. (DH and I have named this official start training agian week). I did Curves last night. Tonight, we're scheduled for 3 hours. SO hard to get back on track again. NOw, to wokr on my eating, so I can be skinny like Christa's MIL thinks a good little runner should be. :rotfl:
