Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

Thanks for all the replies about the novice vs. intermediate training plan for the half. I was bored today and made up a schedule of each training plan. The intermediate plan looks scary!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: I tweaked the novice plan and stuck with the long run distances (there's no taper, isn't that weird? :confused3 ), but added speed work and more strength training. I have 3 weeks to make my decision, so I have time to think about it!

I do have some good news to share, I did my first post marathon workout today and it felt AWESOME!!!! I did 30 minutes on the elliptical (just over 3 miles :woohoo: ) and then did 3 sets on the leg extension weights. I was planning on doing the leg press too, but there was a line for that. I'll be happy when this New Year's Resolution thing dies down, there were people circling the ellipticals and treadmills like vultures!!

Welcome Maria!!

Great job getting back out there, Kristi! Awesome pace!!

Maybe I need to go bra shopping, I got a gift card from Target for Christmas I haven't used yet. Hmmm.

Jen and Heather--Fabulous job on the weight loss, you must be ecstatic!!!

I better go, Stephen is making dinner and I should help him.

Wow! what a great vibe for this active thread. 7 pages already!

I had a solid workout today, although I don't know that I'll ever love the treadmill. Right now I'm using Couch Pototo to 5K, then I'll assess how I'm feeling before I start training with MFM and the Goofy. I'm hoping to train for a Walk-Run or Run-Walk combination.

Good news in the support systems of my life: my DH, the marathoner in the family, surprised me with new shoes. They didn't fit, but I was touched at his thoughtfulness. He's been a little hard to read about this whole thing, as running has always been his "thing."

And we told my ILs about Goofy. I thought they'd hate the idea, because they really don't like his running (takes time away from family gatherings, his knees, etc.). But they actually thought the whole family could come watch--a surprise reaction. Of course, they also suggested DH and I get married at WDW during the trip. (DH and I aren't married, long story, but have been together so long that it's just more accurate to refer to him that way.) Apparently they don't think us running the Goofy together is enough of a commitment! :rotfl2:

Did 3 miles on my tm yesterday and was stuck in a training class for 9 hrs. today:scared: :headache: but on lunch I did manage to buy a cleaner for my tm. It cleans inbetween the belt and base...I'm so excited...maybe this will improve my time. lol. Still having problems with my left hip, leg, ankle and foot, so I don't know what that's about.

Have you guys thought of buying small workout towels with the WISH logo? I use small towels all the time when working out and thought it would be useful/cool to use during the marathon. What do you think?

Well, I went out and did some upper body work this evening. Haven't done any since the end of October. Only managed 50 pushups, 100 crunches and about 6 dips, and I can't do a pullup or chinup to save my backside. So, I did a few static holds. I definitely need to get back into the swing of things.

So after that heavy workout, I figured I'd do a few rounds on the heavy bag. Haven't done that since breaking my thumb in November. Four 3 minute rounds. A little tired, but man did it feel good to hit something. Its a great stress reliever. :woohoo:

Here's a picture of my patio gym.

Yep, that's where I got mine. I am very modestly (B) endowed, so it's not an issue for me. I don't think they would work for a larger cup. I think things might be flyin' all over. :rotfl:

lol - I am a C cup but you would never know it when I run. I flatten everything in tight super supportive sports bras (I like Moving Comfort). I don't need any sideways momentum when I am trying to go forward! And I am hoping that they won't end up around my knees one day.

The men I run with are usually pretty surprised the first time they see me in street clothes.

Oh yeah - Do any of you Goofy alums have a good training plan? Do they have a Goofy training plan? :lmao: :lmao: And am I the only one who thinks its funny that I just asked that question? I was thinking of modifying the marathon training plan I used this year but I am not sure how.

Wow - I just had to catch up on 4 pages from this morning!!! :hyper2:

Well, I am officially signed up for Donald! :woohoo: DH is still deciding between Mickey and Goofy... He did sign up for Minnie, though, so we'll definitely be there! :thumbsup2

My cross training for today was wandering around 6 different stores looking for a border for the nursery (and I still didn't find anything...), and washing baby clothes. :laundy: I have to think the walking and the basket lifting count for something. :rotfl:

I somehow missed Target in all my travels today, but will stop by tomorrow to check out these running bras. For those not sure if they will work, I have found that wearing two takes care of any *ahem* issues. ;)

For all those joining the Team - Welcome!!! :welcome:

Gotta run - I hear DS. (Something tells me he is not sleeping...)

Cecilia - I used the furman first (sp?) 16 week program for goofy 2 years ago. It was my first marathon (out of 4 and an ultra not counting goofy) and i found it to be the easiest. I modified their program and changed my mid week tempo run to make it 1/2 the distance of my LR and i did it the day b/4 the LR. i ended up only doing 3 back to backs. I do a lot of endurance racing (adventure racing for up to 24 hours continuous), so I think that helped make goofy seem not so overwhelming. Also, i chose that program specifically b/c it only had 3 day/week running and I needed the others to work on paddling and mt. biking. I even substutited a few long runs for a 100 mile bike ride and 2 adventure races which were 9-12 hrs each. I ended up doing enough running during the race to count is as my run that week anyway. I don't know if that helps or not. The first year they did goofy, they interviewed hal higdon and he said his intermediate marathon program was a good fit for the event. That was way too long, but i hope it helps! Congrats on signing up and good luck w/ your training.

Sunny & Dave - I worked at BR too in high school! And now DH is an area mgr for BR/Dunkin Donuts - can't seem to get away from it...

Maria - Welcome!

Cam & Lily - I'm also a member of the loud TM club. I can't watch TV unless no one else is home. DH did mention maybe hooking up earphones, but hasn't done it yet, and I'm not tech savvy enough to do it! I keep thinking about buying a new one (this one was a hand-me-down from neighbors and is a piece of ----).

Will try again tomorrow morning - set the clock this AM to run on the TM, but the neighbor's dog kept us up half the night so when the clock went off I turned it off and went back to sleep. Am headed to bed now in hopes of better luck! BTW, DD has taped Sunny's Donald logo on the TM for motivation!

Think I better reiterate the daily instead of weekly thread idea, with multiple new posters every day things are gonna get crazeeeeeeeeee :cheer2: For me it would force me to fess up to the days I didn't do anything too...

Just had to share with those I know understand...roadrunnersports now mysteriously has my endangered shoes in stock! For some reason I checked their site again tonight (after searching all over the net for anyone had still had them). And low & behold, they were there! I couldn't check out fast enough. Well, that's a lie. I had to add some new w/o pants & GUs too, right?

The best news - since they are on their way out, they were over $20 cheaper. So my pants were kinda "free." :rotfl:

I didn't have anything to say, just wanted my 1000th post to be on the Wish boards!!! :woohoo:  :dance3: :woohoo:  :dance3::cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Ah...the old XX rule. I'm very familiar with it. This rule only applies if you have XX chromosomes.:rotfl:

Seriously, DW is always saying things like that. I've learned to just smile and not say a word. We're both more happy that way.:rolleyes1

Oh, and by the way Kristi, congratulations on finding your shoes.

Goofy training plans- I used the intermediate 1 level plan on hal higdon's website for the run portion mileage to get three runs per week and then for the last 7 weeks I was also doing the winter maintenance bike plan off beginnertriathlete.com. So one sample week, I rode M, W, Th, S, S and ran T, Th, 20" transition run on Sat and long Sun. The Sat rides where in the vicinity of 3-3.5 hours. My highest running mileage week only topped out at 35 miles. I didn't bother doing any back to back long runs at all.

So how did this work for me? Great. Ran easy but not super slow on Sat and felt great on Sun. Could have done another long run on Mon and never hurt at all. Caveat to my unusual Goofy approach- I train to run a marathon tired as a matter of principle since most of my marathons(including the next 2) come after a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike. I've now done 6 marathons and 3 have come at the tail end of an Ironman race and one was Goofy 2007 so...the biggest reason I posted this was to just give another perspective on how it can be done. MelR didn't mention it but I know she did alot of cross training especially on the bike too.

My coach says his goal is to get it so I actually like to run since doing the marathon during Goofy w/ Kevin and Howard was only the second time I ever actually described a running race as 'fun.' The other time was a half marathon I entered on a whim because a friend decided 5 days before the race she wanted to do her first half. So we ran 13.1 miles in the rain up some nasty hills(Big Lake 2006 for the NH peeps) at a pace for me that caused her to tell me to shut up about mile 11. I was allowed to talk again once we hit mile 12 so apparently I'm only happy running when I'm socializing. Luckily we've got a great WISH group that will be happy to help me out with that I'm sure;)

Welcome to all the new people. We've got a friendly and helpful group here with a wide range of experiences in all manner of things.

Maria--Welcome! This really is a great group. You'll love it here.

Blueroses--yeah, I carry a lot of stuff when I run too, especially if it's going to be a LR. Try this one time--lay out everything you're going to bring on a run before you put it on (clothes, shoes, techie stuff, everything). You'll be surprised at how much stuff you put on your body. We're like lime green camels. :) Have fun in WDW!

Lisa--way to go on registering for Goofy!

Judy--we're not supposed to be carb loading anymore?? Why didn't anyone tell me?! :rotfl:

Vic--I'm jealous of the workout equipment. Krista and I have been toying with the idea of buying some free weights, bench, etc, but just haven't done it yet.

Anyway, I'm not sure how this thread works. Do you post your weekly totals? Post every day? Either one? So I'll start this way. Last week I only ran 12.9 miles. This morning I stopped at the Y after dropping the kiddos at school and did 3.1 on the treadmill.
Happy running/walking to all!

HMHunters--yeah, that's probably how we SHOULD be posting, but as you can see, it gets a little crazier than that around here. You should have seen this thread about a month ago during the marathon taper. :rolleyes1 Good luck with your decision about what to do for the races next year.

Ok, so I've decided that I enjoy cold-weather running more than any other type of running. Period. Not semi-cool, 50 degree shorts and a LS shirt weather. I'm talking 25 to 30 degree, gloves and a hat weather. I don't know why it took my over two years to figure this out.
Having said that, I did do two INDOOR workouts today (where it was almost 70 degrees  ). Stationary bike and weights this morning, then 4 miles tonight. I think that there are a couple of tri's that I want to do this spring, and I'd really love to do the Chicago Tri in August. I just feel so much better overall when I swim and bike along with running, so I figure as long as I'm training that way, I might as well sign up for a few races.

Ok, I just realized that it's only Monday and we're on page 8 already! :scared1: We are chatty, chatty, chatty. Hope everyone had a good Monday!

Steve

Cecilia--Oh, I knew there was something I forgot to post. Goofy training. I used Hal Higdon's Intermediate 1 plan and modified it slightly. I changed the shorter LR on Saturdays to be approx half of the LR on Sundays. Most of his Intermediate plan does this already, but as you get near the 20 milers, he tapers back a bit on the shorter LR. I also changed the final "big week" to end with 11 Saturday and 22 on Sunday. My longest weekly mileage was around 48 or so.
It seemed to work well for me, although I was pretty tired near the end of the marathon on Sunday (I'm thinking that had more to do with the heat, though). I think the most important thing was to get my body used to the short recovery time it had between the Saturday and Sunday LRs. I tried to stretch and take an ice bath after every Saturday run, which seemed to help with overall soreness on Sunday mornings. And near the peak weeks, I had pasta on Friday night, some protein and carbs on Saturday after the first shorter LR, and pasta yet again on Saturday night. After that spell in Nov and Dec, Krista said we are never going to frequent Italian restaurants again. :)
Hope this helps. Let me know if you want to see the plan I ended up with and I can email/PM it to you.

Steve

Ok, so I'm back again for a short post. I just wanted to proudly proclaim that this is my first soda-free day!!! I've decided that in order to get in better shape, I am laying off all carbonated beverages. Which is hard for me, because I'm pretty much addicted to all Sprite and Sierra Mist. But I've made it through today, and I'm just gonna take it day by day by day.......

Also, does anyone have any tips about getting rid of bile in your mouth?? I run on our treadmill and so I can't exactly spit.......I don't think Mom would appreciate it. I normally keep a bottle of water near by, but I use that for drinking so I can't rinse my mouth out with it. Or well, I technically could, but it'd gross me out. So any ideas?????

Get a spit rag...kind of gross--but accomplishes the job. You can also keep a wastebasket nearby--bigger if your aim will be off--and you can spit in that. I would probably just use a tall kitchen trash can. I spit a bunch as well when out on LRs.

Cecilia, I used my MfM training and did what Christa had posted up from the tricharlotte.com site her coach posted a while back. Follow whatever program you use to train during the week. Modify your LR weekends starting with mile 12 LRs by doing half of that the previous day. It worked fine for the last 2 Goofy events for me. (rest days day previous and day after)

I do have insight to add since I trained slightly different the 2 times I've done the event. First was more involved with cross training. This last time I had less time and left off a lot of XT. I feel XT is very important and I recommend that.

Carrie I mean Mel, I'm sorry...I do this ALL the time don't I? I think of one and type the other.

Ooooh WISH Team towels! Ooooboyohboyohboy more WISH gear...is there going to be anything I won't own that is WISH I'm wondering.
